Ambient Commons: Attention in the Age of Embodied Information (MIT Press), by Malcolm McCullough

The world is filling with ever more kinds of media, in ever more contexts and formats. Glowing rectangles have become part of the scene; screens, large and small, appear everywhere. Physical locations are increasingly tagged and digitally augmented. Amid this flood, your attention practices matter more than ever. You might not be able to tune this world out. So it is worth remembering that underneath all these augmentations and data flows, fixed forms persist, and that to notice them can improve other sensibilities. In Ambient Commons, Malcolm McCullough explores the workings of attention through a rediscovery of surroundings.

McCullough describes what he calls the Ambient: an increasing tendency to perceive information superabundance whole, where individual signals matter less and at least some mediation assumes inhabitable form. He explores how the fixed forms of architecture and the city play a cognitive role in the flow of ambient information. As a persistently inhabited world, can the Ambient be understood as a shared cultural resource, to be socially curated, voluntarily limited, and self-governed as if a commons? Ambient Commons invites you to look past current obsessions with smart phones to rethink attention itself, to care for more situated, often inescapable forms of information.

Review

Malcolm McCullough conducts a deep and broad exploration into a territory that was once imaginary, but is now part of everyday life. The latest news and disinfotainment is available on high-definition, stadium-sized screens on public buildings and on handheld gizmos that know where you are and who you are and that broadcast as well as receive. Ambient Commons is a call to become more mindful about the way our attention encounters the environment and about the way environments influence attention -- and a sourcebook for those who want to take more control of the process.

(Howard Rheingold, author of Net Smart, Tools for Thought, The Virtual Community, and Smart Mobs)

Malcolm McCullough's book is to information what Central Park is to Manhattan -- a place of reflection and circumspection that reveals helpfully the contours of the world we have constructed and hopefully an outline of the world we should build, the ambient commons.

(Albert Borgmann, author of Real American Ethics and Holding On to Reality)

Ambient Commons is a timely wake-up call and a hugely valuable guidebook to the new post-'digital' landscape of contemporary urban culture. McCullough demonstrates how important it is that we understand technology as culture, and that it is worthy of philosophical inquiry. He conveys these complex ideas so that they feel accessible, yet are rigorously researched and instantly appealing. It is also, unlike most texts that pivot around technology, beautifully written.

(Dan Hill, Fabrica)

Ambient Commons is quiet, patient and profound; through 12 pithy chapters, it asks us to ponder information contexts.

(Times Higher Education)

Ambient Commons sizzles with provocative ideas: attention theft, right to undisrupted attention, peak distraction. It's a call for responsible urbanism.... Given the recent hype about the rise of the 'smart city' -- courtesy of large technology companies pitching solutions to innovaton-hungry mayors -- McCullough's advocacy of technologically mediated but humane urbanism is timely.

(Evgeny Morozov The New Yorker)

The book is both a delight to read and a call to action in two ways. Civilized human beings need to disengage from their glowing rectangles and appreciate the world around us, and design professionals need to pay attention to the information content of our environment.

(User Experience Magazine)

Requires careful reading, but includes many easily understood gems
By Dr. J of The Social Network Show
As information becomes plentiful, attention becomes scarce. That truism from Herbert Simon, a pioneer of cognitive science, has many implications for us as humans in “the information age.” Advertisers also vie for our attention—and the competition is fierce. Those who want your attention are progressively filling up every nook and cranny with information. Ads, links, and notices are placed in any spec of unclaimed real estate. Remember when you first heard someone speaking to you from a little gadget attached to the gas pump? Or first saw a video explaining the advantages of a product hung on the end aisle at the supermarket? The same is true of virtual real estate, as when ads are crowded onto websites. As computing goes mobile, our outdoor attention is not only grabbed by billboards and other signage everywhere, but our mobile devices simultaneously demand our attention be directed toward tiny screens and whatever is going on in the online world.

At this point we must ask how our situational awareness (SA) is faring. Do we know what is going on around our body in the physical world? Do we notice our surroundings? Obviously, SA is essential if we are to avoid accidents such as walking in front of a vehicle or falling into a ditch. How many times have you seen a pedestrian walking, even in a busy parking lot, with eyes glued to his or her mobile phone? How many bags or cases have been snatched while the carrier’s mind was distracted with a phone call or text? Yes, SA is important for our safety, but something else is at risk as well. It is our ability to be fascinated with aspects of our surroundings.

Professor McCullough observes that, for the most part, we enjoy the superabundance of information in modern life. But perhaps we can use technological advances to better filter it. There is evidence that giving conscious attention to our situational awareness can help us. Attention is not limited to a spotlighted area, nor does it need to be effortful. Recent concepts such as “nature-deficit disorder” and ecopsychology reflect growing awareness that human mental health, indeed, human sanity, depends upon attending to our environment. Professor McCullough would argue that the built, as well as natural, environment can provide valuable structure and be restorative to our frazzled selves.

Those steeped in the academic discourse of architecture and design will find it more easily understood than the rest of us (hence the missing fifth star), but if you are looking for an intriguing challenge, you will be rewarded for your effort. When I needed a quicker intro to the whole topic, Professor McCullough recommended starting with the journal article “On Attention to Surroundings” in the November/December, 2012, issue of Interactions (published by ACM, Association for Computing Machinery), pp. 41-49. The concepts are more fully explored in Ambient Commons. The references at the end of the article and the endnotes of the book are wonderful. Prof. McCullough shows great courtesy in crediting original sources to the degree possible, even when ideas have become "common knowledge." It is also a beautifully designed book; even if I couldn’t read English, I would love this book for its visual and tactile delight, inside and out.

Disclosure: Much of this review also appears in connection with Professor McCullough's interview on The Social Network Show in August 2014: http://thesocialnetworkstation.com/the-battle-for-your-attention/ The website for the book is http://ambientcommons.org

Enlightening. As a graduate in ICT and looking to enter interaction design, McCullough's work opened my eyes to questions that anyone who is studying place-centric design & place specific computing should consider.

A short sighted understanding of the role technology plays in our lives. The author seems out-of-touch and curmudgeonly as he attempts to embody how "kids these days" don't look at the stars like they used to. However, the framework of ambient commons seems helpful if you can get beyond the author's own self-righteousness.

TITUS COAN~ the man who changed HAWAI'I
By PHILLIP LEMKIN
We first read Titus Coan's autobiography when we house sat for friends in HILO in September , 2012.

Every BELIEVER in Jesus Christ should read this man's faith and perseverance under trial, at a time when it was not easy to travel from Connecticut, USA to the Sandwich Islands, that were firstly discovered by Captain James Cook, the greatest navigator ever to sail the seas. When Titus arrived with his bride in 1835, there were no roads, bridges or horses, and it had only been 15 years since the first missionaries, the LYMANNS came in 1820, also from Connecticut.

Together with one of the strongest converts from paganism, Queen Kapiolani, Titus managed to bring true conversion and water baptized believers to 96% of the whole Hawaiian Islands, by the time he died in 1882. He founded the largest church building in the world with over 10,000 believers in HILO, and their fifth building from 1858 is still functioning, and is called the HAILI CHURCH.

They lived through several volcanic lava flows from Mauna Loa, 50 miles away, that even threatened their entire existence in 1880, until they fasted and prayed together and the flow stopped just 1/2 mile from Hilo.

First hand reports from the actual challenges make fascinating reading and give encouragement to all who trust in the Almighty God of creation

Memories of his New England boyhood...
By Tami Brandt
That you will be completely charmed by Elliot Paul's recollections of his boyhood is a matter beyond speculation. The turn-of-the-century scenes are not only dear to his heart but clear to his mind -- albeit sometimes suspiciously so. But who will quarrel with so elegant a storyteller as Mr. Paul? Out of the sows ear of common occurrence he makes a silken purse to hold the coins of our enchantment. Rare is the reader who will not delight in these fortified memories.
Those who recall LAST TIME I SAW PARIS know that Elliot Paul is incapable of being banal or tiresome. Thus there is nothing of the diary-like march of events in this record of his early years in the Boston suburb where he was born. Instead you will find a series of neatly dovetailed stories, anecdotes. character sketches, comedies, tragedies and singularly embellished observations all set out for your allurement like gems in a jewelers window.
Some of Mr. Paul's tales of the people who lived out their lives in Linden will make you laugh, some may even tempt a tear. There are a few -- such as the story of Alice Townsend, the schoolteacher who found that her name had been written in the snow with a stylus of strange origin -- that may inspire the merest suggestion of a blush.

LINDEN ON THE SAUGUS BRANCH, a volume complete in itself, is another segment in what will ultimately be Elliot Paul's life story: ITEMS ON THE GRAND ACCOUNT. Both THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS and THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A SPANISH TOWN are other books in this group.

I loved it!
By Pollyanna
I grew up in Linden in the 50's & early 60's and even though this is written in early 1900's this author captured all of my emotional attachments to so many characters, places & events that I experienced. I will even reread again at a later time! A true gem if you knew Linden "in the day"

Great book! Must read!
By Katy Krassner
If you're looking for an end of summer read, this is the book for you. Each short story is a journey in to the minds and hearts of flawed characters who will not only touch you but may make you think of your own foibles. Hughes knows how flesh out a character that leaves you wanting to learn more. Highly recommend

Hughes the voice of the aging original MTV generation
By Richard W Kozak
Brian Hughes' anthology Where is the One? Is a hauntingly eclectic mix of character, ethos and pathos. For a generation sandwiched between "The Greatest Generation" and Gen X followed by the ever needy millennials, Hughes voice is both a tour guide of the soul and long sought window to conscience. This collection's 12 stories' characters run the gamut of near piousness to debauchery and if ever incarnated would make for one hell of an office Christmas party.
Hughes's uncanny ability to meld time, space, location and popular culture add to an amalgam of the senses. A fantastic read to take one to the end of summer with characters and stories that will touch and inspire you.

This certainly looks like the work of an emerging master
By Will Gabin
Where is the One" is the work of a young visionary wired into contemporary America from the ground up. Hughes is spookily attuned to the bizarre behavior of popular culture and the buzz of everyday, ordinary speech. 12 short stories stinging with verisimilitude and bittersweet-truths, once you’re in you can’t get out – nor do you want to. I can’t wait to read them again! This certainly looks like the work of an emerging master.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Psilocybin mushrooms have been part of human culture since earliest recorded history. Wall paintings dating from the Neolithic period found at the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau in Algeria depict the use of mushrooms in shamanistic rituals. Mayan and Aztec civilizations used psilocybin mushrooms for purposes of religion, divination, and healing in pre-Columbian times, and their descendants continue to do so today. In his book Food of the Gods, Terence McKenna proposed that psychedelic mushrooms may have even played a role in human evolution by stimulating brain activity and acting as a catalyst for the development of language, arts, and religious impulses. It seems that psilocybin mushrooms have influenced and shaped our perceptions from the earliest stages of human history.

In modern times, psilocybin mushrooms continue to be a potent tool for understanding ourselves and the world around us. At this time in history, technological innovation is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Advances in computing, information technology, medical science and nanotechnology over the coming decades will drastically change the way we live. It has been theorized that a point of "technological singularity" is approaching, when artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence. Faced with such momentous, paradigm-shifting events, mankind will be forced to consider its place and purpose in the universe more deeply than ever before. Psychedelics and the unique awareness they engender are indispensable as far as how they are able to aid in this analysis. Psilocybin mushrooms are one of our most ancient tools in this regard, and they have the potential to aid us further in realizing our fullest cognitive, spiritual, and physical potentials.

In this context--and for the purpose of disseminating essential information--this book presents a methodology for inexpensive, effective, bulk cultivation of the psilocybin mushroom Psilocybe cubensis. Probably the most well-known psychedelic mushroom in the world, P. cubensis can be found growing in natural settings in North and South America, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australia and has been cultivated in home settings since the publication of growing techniques in the 1970s. The book Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide by O.T. Oss and O.N. Oeric was one of the first books to describe accessible and affordable cultivation methods for P. cubensis. More recent publications like The Mushroom Cultivator and Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by mycologist Paul Stamets have become essential references for hobbyists and professional mycologists alike.

Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide Simple Steps to Bulk Cultivation outlines every step in the simplest bulk-cultivation process. Information is presented in a logical progression with step-by-step guides, along with accompanying essential theory. Hundreds of images and diagrams throughout the book clarify instructions and show the stunning results that are possible. In addition to providing basic information for the beginner, the book also covers advanced cultivation methods and construction of advanced equipment, thus allowing rapid progression beyond the basic method of growing from a spore print.

A Mushroom Homegrower's Gem
By Lar
An excellent book full of useful information! It is focused on the home grower and specifically outlines a step by step, 'do it yourself' approach.I am personally impressed on how the author thoroughly and systematically shows the process of making your own equipment.

Using this as a reference, anyone should be able to grow mushrooms in their own home. The cleverly made Sourcing Guide at the end of the book has useful advice in finding various equipments and items needed.

In terms of ease of use, this is an excellent book on mushroom growing.

I enjoyed the book, which I read far more quickly that I expected. I felt that I did know a little more at the end of the read, though of course it remains still a mystery in terms of what actually happened. I feel this volume was a useful contribution to the discussion.

Surviving AI: The promise and peril of artificial intelligence, by Calum Chace

Artificial intelligence is our most powerful technology, and in the coming decades it will change everything in our lives. If we get it right it will make humans almost godlike. If we get it wrong... well, extinction is not the worst possible outcome.

“Surviving AI” is a concise, easy-to-read guide to what's coming, taking you through technological unemployment (the economic singularity) and the possible creation of a superintelligence (the technological singularity).

Here's what some of the leading thinkers in the field have to say about it:

A sober and easy-to-read review of the risks and opportunities that humanity will face from AI.

Jaan Tallinn – co-founder of Skype

Understanding AI – its promise and its dangers – is emerging as one of the great challenges of coming decades and this is an invaluable guide to anyone who’s interested, confused, excited or scared.

David Shukman – BBC Science Editor

We have recently seen a surge in the volume of scholarly analysis of this topic; Chace impressively augments that with this high-quality, more general-audience discussion.

Aubrey de Grey – CSO of SENS Research Foundation; former AI researcher

It's rare to see a book about the potential End of the World that is fun to read without descending into sensationalism or crass oversimplification.

Ben Goertzel – chairman of Novamente LLC

Calum Chace is a prescient messenger of the risks and rewards of artificial intelligence. In “Surviving AI” he has identified the most essential issues and developed them with insight and wit – so that the very framing of the questions aids our search for answers. Chace’s sensible balance between AI’s promise and peril makes “Surviving AI” an excellent primer for anyone interested in what’s happening, how we got here, and where we are headed.

Kenneth Cukier – co-author of “Big Data”

If you’re not thinking about AI, you’re not thinking.  “Surviving AI” combines an essential grounding in the state of the art with a survey of scenarios that will be discussed with equal vigor at cocktail parties and academic colloquia.

Chris Meyer – author of “Blur”, “It’s Alive”, and “Standing on the Sun”

The appearance of Calum Chace's book is of some considerable personal satisfaction to me, because it signifies the fact that the level of social awareness of the rise of massively intelligent machines has finally reached the mainstream. If you want to survive the next few decades, you cannot afford NOT to read Chace's book.

Prof. Dr. Hugo de Garis – former director of the Artificial Brain Lab, Xiamen University, China

“Surviving AI” is an exceptionally clear, well-researched and balanced introduction to a complex and controversial topic, and is a compelling read to boot.

Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh – executive director of Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk

In “Surviving AI”, Calum Chace provides a marvellously accessible guide to the swirls of controversy that surround discussion of what is likely to be the single most important event in human history - the emergence of artificial superintelligence. Throughout, “Surviving AI” remains clear and jargon-free.

David Wood – chair of London Futurists

Artificial intelligence is the most important technology of our era.  Technological unemployment could force us to adopt an entirely new economic structure, and the creation of superintelligence would be the biggest event in human history.  "Surviving AI" is a first-class introduction to all of this.

Brad Feld – co-founder of Techstars

Excellent explanation & exploration of the issues
By James S. MacLachlan
I started off by listening to this pair do [book:Pandora's Brain|25265038] which didn't impress me at all. It wasn't what I expected being YA SF, but I don't think that was the main issue. I was given both books for an honest review & am really glad I listened to this one.

The intro starts out with a mind wrenching reference to smart phones being AI. Well, they are, but not what I normally think of in that regard. Don't let it put you off, though. Chace clears up his definitions fairly quickly in the first chapter & then concentrates on what I expected: Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) & Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). [author:Joe Hempel|14429280]'s reading is perfect for the subject matter.

About halfway through, he's given a very good overview of what AI means & to whom - a very important point. Most think of AI as AGI - Colossus running the world or SkyNet destroying the humans - but AI can mean enhancing our own intelligence through information access (smart phones & the Internet) or be very focused like the predictive powers of a search engine. This last is ANI & is pervasive today, amazingly so, & Chace gives a lot of good examples without ever being boring or repetitive. Fantastic!

He then gets in to who is studying what aspects & finally into the various scenarios that could play out when we reach 'singularity' or an actual AGI. His examples for both tend to be on the binary side. While he made a few obvious nods to SF, he missed some of the most interesting. He dismisses any meaningful blend of man & machine mind, thus the possibilities of VR beyond the very obvious. While he mentions augmentation, it is only the most primitive. I don't believe that's a valid area to skip. We're hooking more hardware up to people every day. Is the thought of adding RAM to the wetware further away than AI singularity? I don't think so.

Yeah, Johnny Mnemonic & Plughead are just around the corner. So what happens when they plug into the Internet?

He calls for us all to work together to make sure it is a blessing & not a curse. I have several problems with this.

1) He only addresses the purposeful creation of AI. My gut feeling is that it won't happen that way. It will be a series of accidents of shared processing & algorithms that spawn consciousness of a sort. Maybe that's why he skipped it. We might have no control since there's no way we can pull the plug on the Internet.

2) The dichotomy is not a given, IMO. We're messy & so are many of our creations. While Chace mentions that our thought is an electro-chemical reaction, he never mentions how much that affects our thought processes nor does he divorce it from how an AI might think.

3) He seems to think we ALL need to work together. He has more faith & belief in the democratic process than I do. I'm not saying I want to cut anyone out, just that I don't think everyone's input will be of any use. A broader range of human experience should be brought to bear on the problem & I was disappointed that he didn't bring more SF authors & their works in as examples.

SF authors are pretty bright people, many with science, engineering, & other degrees not to mention huge influence on large numbers of people. They've also spent a LOT of time thinking about the problem. They've written entire universes & gamed all sorts of scenarios. True, a lot of them are out dated or unbelievable, but that doesn't invalidate them any more than the myths he mentioned. For example, he mentions Asimov's 3 laws (too briefly) but fails to mention Williamson's Humanoids, although it was right on one of his points (putting humans in a coma to protect them) & would have made it far better. Anyway, I'd rather see SF authors discussing this with the big brains than politicians, although they'll have to rule on it eventually.

All bitching aside, he did a good job. It's a huge, scary topic & he managed it all in just over 4 hours. Well worth listening to & highly recommended for everyone. Just realize that there is a lot more to it & it will likely be messier than we think.

Excellent Introductory Book on AI
By Book Shark
Surviving AI: The Promise and Peril of Artificial Intelligence by Calum Chace

“Surviving AI" is a very interesting book that looks at the formidable challenges and potential enormous benefits of artificial intelligence. Best-selling author of fiction and non-fiction books, Calum Chace provides readers with keen insights into AI and espouses the need to adopt policies which will encourage the best possible outcomes. This concise 208-page book includes nine chapters broken out by the following four parts: 1. ANI Artificial Narrow Intelligence, 2. AGI Artificial General Intelligence, 3. ASI Artificial Superintelligence, and 4. FAI Friendly Artificial Intelligence.

Positives:
1. A well-written and succinct book.
2. The fascinating topic of artificial intelligence and its potential implications.
3. Chace has great command of the topic and is able to convey at an accessible level.
4. Easy format to follow. Chase breaks the book up in logical pieces and ends each chapter with a conclusion that summarizes well his main points. “The bottom line is that we don’t know for certain whether we can build a brain, or a conscious machine. But the existence of our own brains, producing rich conscious lives (or so we believe) in seven billion humans around the world, is proof that consciousness can be generated by a material entity – unless you believe in a dualist soul, or something similar. Evolution, although powerful, is slow and inefficient, and science is relatively fast and efficient, so in principle we should be able to build a brain.”
5. Does a good job of defining key terms. “Intelligence measures an agent’s general ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.” “The easiest way to do this is to say that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is an AI which can carry out any cognitive function that a human can.”
6. Provides a brief history of AI research.
7. Provides many examples of AI today. “For many people, the embodiment of AI today is Siri, Apple’s digital personal assistant that first appeared pre-loaded in the iPhone 4S in October 2011. The name is short for Sigrid, a Scandinavian name meaning both ‘victory’ and ‘beauty’.”
8. The basic principle of startups and future AI. “Take X and add AI.”
9. A look at important practical topics that affect us now and into the future, digital disruption and economic singularity. “So there may well come a time when a majority of jobs can be performed more effectively, efficiently or economically by an AI than they can be done by a human. This could be called the economic singularity.”
10. One of the strengths of this book is the philosophizing of AI that is, asking the right questions. “The three biggest questions about artificial general intelligence (AGI) are: Can we build one? If so, when? Will it be safe?”
11. The grand theory of evolution makes its presence known. “Evolution: the slow, inefficient way to develop a brain.” “Evolution does not have a purpose or a goal. It is merely a by-product of the struggle for survival by billions and billions of living creatures.”
12. Discusses three reasons why we should be doubtful on developing an artificial mind. “These are: The Chinese Room thought experiment The claim that consciousness involves quantum phenomena that cannot be replicated The claim that we have souls”
13. Discusses three ways we may be able to build a mind. “We can break the problem down into three components: scanning, computational capacity, and modelling.”
14. A look at how soon Artificial General Intelligence may be created. “Expert opinion is divided about when the first AGI might be created. Some think it could be less than a decade, others are convinced it is centuries away.
15. A look at superintelligence. What is the significance? Find out.
16. A very good discussion on the optimistic arguments for superintelligence and the pessimistic ones.
17. One of the most important questions addressed in the book. “Can we ensure that superintelligence is safe?” “Anything smart enough to deserve the label superintelligent would surely be smart enough to lay low and not disclose its existence until it had taken the necessary steps to ensure its own survival. In other words, any machine smart enough to pass the Turing test would be smart enough not to.”
18. The need to have a very important discussion on superintelligence for the sake of our existence. “What we need now is a serious, reasoned debate about superintelligence – a debate which avoids the twin perils of complacency and despair.”

Negatives:
1. A wonderful book for introductory purposes but lacks technical depth.
2. Due to the complex nature of this topic and the fact that neuroscience is in its infancy a lot of what’s in this book albeit fascinating and worth reading is speculative.
3. I think one of the most underrated ways that advanced AI can be discovered is by accident.
4. Lack of supplementary material.
5. Missed opportunities to add material of interest. As an example, the evolution of the robot.
6. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful brief book on AI that is accessible to the masses. Chace does a great job of philosophizing about AI and presenting the arguments for and against superintelligence. If you are looking for an accessible and succinct book that asks the right questions about AI this is a great start. I recommend it!

Further recommendations: “Rise of the Robots” by Martin Ford, “What to Think About Machines That Think” edited by John Brockman, “Our Final Invention” by James Barrat, “When Computers Can Think” by Anthony Berglas, “The Artificial Intelligence Revolution” by Louis Del Monte, “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies” by Nick Bostrom, and “Artificial Superintelligence” by Roman V. Yampolskiy,

AI - fascinating piece of reading
By Luis Alexander Chace Loyola
Chace does it again. The author opens our eyes towards the now near AI future. He puts complex subjects in an easy to understand way. AI is so near, yet the lay person is not even aware of what AI means. He explores the many possible ways in which AI will interact with human beings and gives many examples of them cleverly put in novel form. After reading Chace's book, you will feel like the machines could and will read your mind. The reader will have a much clearer understanding of what AI is after reading Chace's books. Besides the technical AI stuff, the novel has a fast pace that makes it a fascinating piece of reading. For the good or for the bad.... the reader definetely will have a better stand to understand humanity's future.

Voices of the Wild: Animal Songs, Human Din, and the Call to Save Natural Soundscapes (The Future Series), by Bernie Krause

A pioneer in the field of soundscape ecology explores the ways in which the voice of the natural world informs many subjects

Since 1968, Bernie Krause has traveled the world recording the sounds of remote landscapes, endangered habitats, and rare animal species.  Through his organization, Wild Sanctuary, he has collected the soundscapes of more than 2,000 different habitat types, marine and terrestrial. With powerful illustrations and compelling stories, Krause provides a manifesto for the appreciation and protection of natural soundscapes. In his previous book, The Great Animal Orchestra, Krause drew readers’ attention to what Jane Goodall described as “the harmonies of nature . . . [that are being] one by one by one, snuffed out by human actions.” He now explains that the secrets hidden in the natural world’s shrinking sonic environment must be preserved, not only for our scientific understanding, but for our cultural heritage and humanity’s physical and spiritual welfare.

Krause’s narrative—supplemented by exclusive access to field recordings from the wild—draws on a compelling range of personal anecdotes, histories, and examples to document his early exploration of this field and to lay the groundwork for future generations.

Review
“Bernie Krause hears things the rest of us don’t even realize we’re missing. But if we listen carefully, starting with him, we just might resurrect some sweet sounds we’ve lost.”—Alan Weisman, author of Countdown and The World Without Us (Alan Weisman)

“Bernie Krause is a hero to many of us. In a deafened world, he hears, records and explains the parallel universes around us. In Voices of the Wild, he delves deeper into soundscape ecology, into philosophy and spirit, and the use of technology as way to open passageways into those universes. Voices of the Wild is fascinating, urgent, filled with sound and fury and beauty.”—Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods (Richard Louv)

“Bernie Krause shares his delight in the sounds of the natural world and makes an impassioned case for the importance of such acoustics.”—Shelf Awareness (Shelf Awareness)

Human Noise Pollution is Decimating the Song of Wildlife--a Call to Arms!
By Kathleen O'Connor
Fascinating and alarming study of the effect of human noise on animal song. It is depressing to be reminded so brilliantly by this eco-musicologist that humans are spoiling the world in this insidious and all but ignored way--not only do humans take up every square inch of space but every decibel of sound wherever they are. Both in the air and under the water we spread our noise without any awareness of the negative impact that noise has on the animals we share these spaces with--esp boat/ship motor and other underwater auditory interference which has a dire effect on underwater fish and mammals since those sounds carry louder and farther than air-born noise. I've found as I've gotten older that my tolerance for unnecessary human noise--which really does constitute noise pollution in my opinion (loud people ceaselessly talking on their cell phones as if public is private space, loud people & uncontrolled mannerless children in social and other public situations, cars/buses/shipping/transport trucks, trains & planes, rap/rock music blasting from cars, the barrage of tv/radio in every public space, etc) has declined to the point where I feel virtually assaulted by it wherever I go. As the book points out in no uncertain terms with graphic sound charts, the birds and other creatures who share the planet with us can scarcely be heard anymore or more importantly hear each other. The latter truth is that their lack of song interferes with the animals ability to socialize, mate, and reproduce thus contributing even further to the monstrous toll of our physical pollution, destruction of habitat, and burgeoning human population displacing and threatening their continued existence. If we go on as we are, we will be alone on planet earth without other animal company. The poverty of that possibility is too terrible to contemplate. We don't have to be as noisy as we are--just a thought....

... NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-July during a dull spot in stats class
By Kristine Fisher
Voices of the Wild by Bernie Krause is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-July during a dull spot in stats class. Hopefully, this book will be able to transport me to a idyllic forest concert of fauna.

It should be noted that this book is of the length and tone of a dry, academic thesis. The 'Voices of the Wild' title is inappropriately mystifying when the author wants to review information about new and vintage audio equipment, Latin genus names, and national parks.
