About the Author
Dr. Charles L. Hogue (1935 1992) was the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County s curator of entomology for thirty years. He was an author or coauthor of more than one hundred scientific and popular articles, as well as four books. Hogue took great satisfaction in sharing information about insects, and this book vividly reflects his talents as a naturalist and a teacher.

Dr. James N. Hogue is a research associate at the NHM with a PhD in aquatic ecology from Utah State. He is manager of the biological collections in the department of biology at California State University, Northridge, and is also a part-time lecturer there.

Dr. Brian V. Brown is the present curator of entomology at the NHM. He earned his doctorate at the University of Alberta. Through his work he has discovered and described about five hundred new species of phorids.

Excellent book to have around when that 6-legged (or 8-legged) ...

I've had the 2nd edition for years and was waiting for a new edition. The new color coding of chapters really helps when a fast lookup is needed. Excellent book to have around when that 6-legged (or 8-legged) "friend" appears that you've never seen before.

Beautiful book and a real tribute to Charlie Hogue

Beautiful book and a real tribute to Charlie Hogue. I would suggest a better review of the "urban" insect pests such as cockroaches in future editions. There are many new and well-established pest cockroaches in the Los Angeles basin including the Turkestan and smokybrown.

About the Author
Dr. Joaquin M. Fuster was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1930. Studied medicine at the University of Barcelona. In Barcelona and Innsbruck (Austria), he specialized in psychiatry. In 1957 Fuster emigrated to the United States for a career in neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1962-64, he worked as a visiting scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. He received his PhD. in neuroscience at the University of Granada, Spain. Dr. Fuster is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and a member of the Brain Research Institute and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the UCLA's School of Medicine.

Dr. Fuster's major honors and awards include: the title of Member of Honor of the Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine (1997); Signoret Prize (Université de La Sorbonne, Paris) (2000); Fyssen International Science Prize (2000); Doctor Honoris Causa, Universidad Miguel Hernández, Alicante, Spain (2003); Goldman-Rakic Prize for Cognitive Neuroscience (NARSAD) (2006); George Miller Prize of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (2006); Doctor Honoris Causa, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2008); Geschwind Lecturer, Harvard University (2009); Woolsey Lecturer, University of Wisconsin (2010); Elected Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2010); Segerfalk Lecturer, University of Lund, Sweden (2010); Doctor Honoris Causa, Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Guatemala (2014). Grace is tired of her life. Her boyfriend, Harry, hasn't had a job in years, and she's sick of supporting him when he refuses to help himself. Her job as a pharmaceutical sales rep is unrewarding and does not provide her any inspiration. The only thing in her life she enjoys is yoga: Swami D's yoga center provides Grace the chance to unwind and reflect on her miserable life.

One night, a doctor Grace is marketing to confesses his dissatisfaction with his own life. He tells her he is considering going to Vietnam for a few months and training in Eastern medicine. Grace's shock at this announcement, combined with her realization that she is not the only one feeling this sense of disappointment in life, leads her to a drastic decision: she signs up for a retreat at a yoga center in California, determined to pursue the only thing that makes her happy. She is going to become a yoga teacher.

Alexandra Gray's The Yoga Teacher is about leaving your comfort zone - leaving everything comfortable and warm and forging forward into the unknown. Grace finds many rewards but also many hardships along the way. In the end, it is about pursuing those things in life that keep you fulfilled and ending those that disappoint you.

Gray has a real talent for writing characters. From Grace to her yoga students, each person in the book is crafted with loving care. Though the reader only gets glimpses into the lives of some of the characters, they nonetheless are full-blooded, three-dimensional characters that the reader is simply dropping in on for a visit. I could completely see them living their separate lives as Grace goes on with hers.

The one thing about The Yoga Teacher that may give readers some pause is its pace. Though the book is short, the first quarter of the book moves very slowly. It makes sense because it parallels the movement in Grace's life: at the beginning, Grace's life is slow and boring - there is nothing in it to excite her. Then, as she begins to make decisions to change her life, the pace of the narrative picks up, as does her story. Though it is an effective method (the reader really feels the despondency in Grace's life), it may turn some readers off.

The novel also provides some interesting information about yoga, which readers unfamiliar with the practice may find valuable. It will undoubtedly inspire some to think about joining local yoga classes.

While The Yoga Teacher could be read as a mid-life crisis type book due to Grace's age (she is 40), it is more broadly book about an unhappy woman who decides that, against all odds, she will somehow find a way to be happy. It is thoroughly enjoyable, with a quirky cast of characters that any reader will love. I recommend it to any women who find the premise interesting, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about yoga.

Yoga as a novel - I liked it!

This was an interesting idea to have a novel that revolves around yoga. I'm a yoga instructor myself -- and a very picky reader -- but I ended up really enjoying this book.

The plot itself wasn't very original; a woman who is not satisfied with her life, ends up changing everything, and ends up happy in the end. We have seen that plot many times, but what was great about this book was all the yoga weaved into it, and how Grace really uses yoga to change her life. If you are familiar with yoga, you know that can actually happen. If you are not familiar with yoga, I'm not sure how much you would care about this book, because you may not be sure what the author is talking about half the time.

The first 50 pages, or so, kind of dragged on, and I almost stopped reading the book, but I am glad I kept reading because it picked up very well after that. Grace goes on to do her yoga training and then we hear about all of the students she encounters after that. So, the book was actually very good and I enjoyed it very much once I got into it. Read the book, you'll like it, and if you have ever wanted to try yoga, maybe this book will help inspire you!

When I first heard about Alexandra Gray's "The Yoga Teacher", I was excited. As a yoga enthusiast, I thought it would be fun to read about the main character Grace and her personal journey from a 40 year old woman dissatisfied with her job and personal life embarking on a new life as a yoga teacher. The book explores a common theme in today's western yoga community, tales of business professionals leaving everything behind for a more spiritual life roam everywhere.

For the most part, I enjoyed the book, even though I was never quite convinced with the intentions of the main character...for someone wanting to be a yoga teacher, she seemed to be a bit petty and shallow. But then, maybe that was the point.

Alexandra Gray is a good writer and the book is definitley a page turner. If you're looking for a above average bit of chick lit with a holistic twist, this will do nicely.

This first novel opens well. O'Dell does an impeccable job of making Harley both brutal and forgivable. Here, for instance, he retreats to his basement room: "I lay there until dawn, thinking about Dad, and feeling the same useless frustration I had felt the first time I had seen him piss on a sparkling white drift of pure new snow."

But that delicacy is soon lost, and Back Roads risks becoming an overabundant affair, pitched high, with a roller-coaster trajectory. Harley's anger metamorphoses into an almost bloodthirsty lust for his sexy, middle-aged neighbor, which stirs up myriad forbidden family secrets. Misty, it turns out, has been hiding something. Amber revolts. And even Jody's scribbles turn malevolent. While the writing is good throughout, the tension and plotting assume an unpleasant adolescent posture--bodice-ripping passion and mordant gloom combined. Nonetheless, O'Dell's assured and touching portrait of her protagonist emerges unscathed. You will likely remember luckless, fated Harley Altmyer long after his tsunamic tale has receded. In a small Pennsylvania town depressed by coal mine closings, a young man of 19 finds himself thrust into the role of parent. Harley has become the guardian of his three younger sisters as the result of their mother going to jail for the shooting death of their father. Each sibling finds his or her own way of coping with this family tragedy. During his regular visits with a psychotherapist Harley finds some comfort while at the same time feeling disdain for this woman. He is able to satisfy his youthful urges by beginning a series of sexual encounters with an older woman whose daughter is a playmate of his youngest sister. The characterizations are vivid, and each family member generates sympathy. Reader Dylan Baker does a satisfactory job of interpreting Harley's sense of frustration and cynicism. Everytime you THINK you've got it... YOU AIN'T GOT IT!

I finished BACK ROADS two weeks ago and I am still haunted by the images and the language of the text. It is a very intense piece of Art. Although, I must warn you that Oprah was telling you the truth, it's a hard novel on the emotions . O'Dell, the author, does not let up! If you are a 'lists' person, here it is in order of intensity: Intrigue, Sex, Abuse, Sex, Secrecy and Genuine Unpredictability. The protagonist, 19-year-old Harley Altmyer is the sole guardian of his three younger sisters Amber (16), Misty (12) and the baby of the family Jody (6) (Jody's spelling is both sad and painfully funny). Rather than become a ward of the state or be put on welfare, a very responsible Harley decides to be "the man" of the house after their mother is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of their very abusive father. I am very tempted to tell you the incredible twists and turns O'Dell takes you with that fact. But you must read it all for yourself. You will NEVER in a million years or pages should I say, see what the end will be. To continue, in conjunction with his two years experience of parenting, Harley also has to deal with his bursting need for sexual comfort. Some of the sexual images in his mind are extremely disturbing and violent. Yet, this author is on her job, she makes you see why the images surface in that manner in the first place which allow us very sensitive readers to carry on with the story. He has to deal with three emotionally raw females, for which he has neither data nor point of reference. Also, there is the mortgage, the two full-time jobs, and a loneliness that is so vast it creates a fifth mouth to feed. If you are one of those, " I can't read another disturbing word of this book, I MUST put it down"...you simply can't. Back Roads calls you back until your eyes have reached the last alphabet of the novel.

Hidden from the world on the Back Roads

I finished this novel in two days.I simply could not put it down.I needed to know what was going to happen to Harley next. Harley's like other teens,except he has too much responibility too soon. With his father dead, his mother in prison, and three sisters to take care of,one may wonder where he finds the time and energy for everything else that happens. I didn't care, all I wanted was what would happen with the next page. He may be a low class Holden Caufield, but this novel reminds me more of the Bean family in Carolyn Chute's wonderful The Beans Of Egypt Maine. If you don't know that novel, read them both. Sometimes life isn't a bowl of cherries, but the pits...

Tawni O'Dell has written a tale of The Great American Nightmare. Undoubtedly, the story is a tragedy and, just as an occasional person might not appreciate Shakespeare's tragedies, this work may lose a sensitive reader. But the realism of the work with descriptions that are PERTINENT, makes the reader feel, smell, hear, and taste becoming one with the book. Harley is a victim of circumstance. His family has splintered from the whole of society with the death of his father and he becomes burdened as an individual to bear premature responsibilities. The story becomes a tale of children with misdirected passions brought into a harsh, cruel world too soon. And sadly enough, the work stings of believability. After reading this novel, one begins to ponder the workings of our society upon those who merely seek to just survive. Ms. O'Dell has done an outstanding job on her first book. And until Tawni O'Dell has her next novel in print, I will simply keep rereading this one.

This will be my go-to book for Algebra tutoring

It seems that the Dummies series, published by Wiley, is not expanding into the textbook arena with a "U Can" series. I can't speak for any other current or future publications in this series, but this Algebra I textbook is terrific in its format and strategy. The Section headings (except perhaps Chapter I) give a clue as to the approach:

Getting Started with Algebra I
Changing the format of expressions
Sleuthing for solutions of equations
Solving story problems and sketching graphs
The part of tens (Ten common errors and ten quick tips).

There are 27 chapters in all, and especially helpful is the clear way the author is able to translate, define, and explain what an algebraic question is asking. I find that's a key drawback among students that have trouble with the subject. For the first section, the author does an excellent job of explaing exponents, radical, fractions, decimals, and signs, and is just as perspicacious in explaining how to solve with graphing, plotting, including some mid-level algebra problems like lelarning how to create polynomial graphs. The writing is clear, and the tone is neither overly officious textbook-speak, nor does it use dummies dumb-joke asides that are more annoying than anything else. Instead, the book actually has a 'philosophy' of sorts: the author compares solving algebraic problems to a form of puzzle solving, and appropriately focuses on "doing" with lots of practice questions that begin easy and get increasingly more difficult. Each chapter is structured with easy to follow sequences of basic overview, sample answered problems, practice questions, followed by their answers (The latter will be helpful to the serious student, since there's no need to search for the answer sections, but may prove too tempting to students that just want easy solutions--maybe the one drawback of the book.)

Excellent study companion with step-by-step lessons

I like the For Dummies book series in general since they are written in a non-intimidating way to provide instructional guidance for readers new to the subjects covered. Apparently, the publisher is now expanding into the textbook arena with the new "U Can" series. With this in mind, I ordered this book for my daughter who is taking Algebra I at school this year, hoping that it would provide some instructional guidance for her in a less intimidating way than a traditional textbook.

To my delight, my daughter finds this book to be extremely useful. It helps her review and reinforce the understanding of key concepts in step-by-step lessons augmented by clear examples and drill practices. The book is well organized into bite-sized, key concepts that are easy to digest and absorb. Each concept is introduced and explained in details, along with tips and important notes to remember. It is immediately followed by example questions & answers to illustrate the concept, and then by practice questions & answers to drill on. This pattern repeats with each concept that follows and they are then built upon by more complex ones later in the book.

Overall, this is a great resource for students who may need assistance with their Algebra I. The course material is broken into individual lessons with clear content review, along with step-by-step examples and practice problems to help the students understand and retain each concept. It is a textbook written in non-textbook style that is non-intimidating and easy to study with.

Excellent practice

I tutor adults for various tests; ASVAB, GED, GRE, SAT, ACT. Most of my students are math challenged. I ordered this book because it offered lots of practice. It does. It's not a substitute for instruction, but it does reinforce it.

The flaw I've found in most math texts is that they're written by mathemeticians, and are difficult for most of us to understand. The approach Ive found to be most effective is the "recipe": If you see a problem that looks like this, do this. Ms. Sterling's book makes this easy.

At the start of his research in Harar, Baynes-Rock contended with difficult conditions, stone-throwing children, intransigent bureaucracy, and wary hyena subjects intent on avoiding people. After months of frustration, three young hyenas drew him into the hidden world of the Sofi clan. He discovered the elements of a hyena’s life, from the delectability of dead livestock and the nuisance of dogs to the unbounded thrill of hyena chase-play under the light of a full moon. Baynes-Rock’s personal relations with the hyenas from the Sofi clan expand the conceptual boundaries of human-animal relations. A Remarkable Ethnography

Like most people, I have never cultivated either an interest or fondness for hyenas. Marcus Baynes-Rock’s book, Among the Bone Eaters: Encounters with Hyenas in Harar (Penn State UP, 2015) persuaded me otherwise. Baynes-Rock is an anthropologist, writing an enthnography of both hyenas and their Ethiopian humans. It’s fascinating. Bayne’s-Rock is a generous narrator who offers multiple insights on what it means to be human and what it means to be animal and vice versa. At the end, he reflects upon how being with the hyenas has re-shaped his own sense of self. It’s a remarkable account by a gifted anthropologist, and sets an admirable bar for the next generation of animal studies scholars and writers.

This is a wonderful book--for the right reader, that is. I recommend it highly, but be aware that it is the personal side of Baynes-Rock's time doing research for his PhD on hyenas and people, so expect a current of comment about other researchers and their findings as well as the author's own.

Ethiopia is a large place--100 million people, with a very complex ethnic mix as well as Christian/Muslim populations about balanced. Baynes-Rock did his research in Harar, an old and largely Muslim city. He's Australian, but his family is multicultural--he married an Oromo woman he met in Harar (she is from Shewa, another province of the country). The book is a wonderful account of his coming to understand and be understood by both Hararis and hyenas, so it's also an account of self-discovery as well as a young anthropologist's growing understandings of his research topic and of the people and places he researches.

His character sketches are simply outstanding, both of the people of Harar and the hyenas of Harar. Note that this relationship is highly unusual, that hyenas have become part of folk culture and folk stories in a fairly positive way, untypical of the rest of the country, where apparently hyenas are seen as very dangerous and unpredictable. Hyenas are formidable animals and do kill people. Some people in Harar have cashed in from tourists coming to see the hyenas being fed, so there's some vested interest in preserving the animals. Most of the book is set in the old city of Harar (that is, the late medieval walled city, not the entire city), and the agriculture around it. That agriculture consists partly of growing khat, a habit forming drug widely used. Baynes-Rock reports a number of conversations and social occasions where he joined people using the substance. Harar was once the seat of the Muslim jihadi leader Ahmad Gran (there are several spellings) whose many attacks nearly destroyed the Christian Ethiopian state (in the 1500s; he was defeated with some Portuguese help).

The author's accounts of his dealings with people are often entertaining, but underlying them is a respect and affection for Harar and its people. The accounts of his dealings with the hyenas in general and specific individuals are also entertaining and in the end, with a young hyena called Willi, touching. Some of his ideas about the relationship between people and animals are intriguing, and he speculates that the efficiency of hyenas in consuming bones accounts for the rarity of fossils of human ancestors. A couple of times he brings in some philosophers' work that is relevant but far less interesting than the rest of the book. Hyenas in the "wild" are on their way out, he says, but they could survive in a mixed landscape such as in Harar.

Intriguing study of interactions between human and animal "cultures" which reminds me somewhat of "Touching The Wild" , Both describe a very different type of interface between human and other species. Good story teller quality in his writing. Worth the read to open your eyes to possibilities.

Fountains Abbey

`Fountains Abbey: The Story Of A Mediaeval Monastery` (1904) is an illustrated history and description of day to day life at Fountains Abbey in York England. It is the largest and best preserved Cistercian monastery in England, although in ruins since the "Dissolution of Monasteries" in the 1530's. Its history mirrors closely that of English monasticism, and medieval history in general. Although I've read a lot about monasticism in high-level history surveys, the story of a single place is enlightening. There are a number of books about Fountains monastery, this one by an American theologian in 1904 has a romantic flair that sparks the imagination. There is an evocative full color pull out map in the back which is helpful to follow along as the book acts a tour guide through the stone vaulted galleys and passages, underground prisons, rivers that run through tunnels under buildings, twisty foot-worn stone passages, huge chambers. Fountains Abbey is a ruin today, but protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so despite old Henry's dissolution, it should last a long time, no doubt to the delight of the faithful souls who once inhabited its walls.
