Review

Finally, someone has brought some science―and some sense―to the mommy wars. Should be required reading for all new (and old) parents.

(Emily Oster, Brown University, author of Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong―And What You Really Need to Know)

Alice Callahan has written a breakthrough book, combining the compassion, warmth, and angst of a mother with the measured reasoning of a scientist. She helps parents not only understand how science works, but how they can access that science to answer their questions. She's found a way to access the scientist in all of us.

(Paul A. Offit, MD, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia)

Yes! An easy-to-read, fascinating, nuanced review of the science behind new parents' biggest health questions. Many of these issues―infant sleep, breastfeeding, vaccines―have or will hit your 'Should I panic?' button. With gentle guidance, Alice Callahan puts your fears to rest.

(Tracy Cutchlow, author of Zero to Five: 70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science (and What I've Learned So Far))

Too many of today's parents treat science as a weapon, using it to justify some choices and condemn others. Yet, most don't fully understand what science can and cannot tell us. By giving parents a comprehensive understanding of how science relates to parenting, Alice Callahan has helped us turn this weapon into a tool for peace. Callahan untangles basic scientific concepts, reveals the realities and limitations of research, and advocates for a measured approach to parenting science that eschews absolutes and acknowledges nuance. The Science of Mom is a rare gem in the parenting canon―smart, sensitive, and a lifesaver for a generation of parents caught in the nebulous spider's web of Internet 'wisdom.'

(Suzanne Barston, author of Bottled Up: How the Way We Feed Babies Has Come to Define Motherhood, and Why It Shouldn't)

Families routinely search for health information. The Science of Mom makes it easy collecting evidence for health decisions and putting it into perspective with a mom-to-mom connection. Callahan's advice is thoughtful, backed by science and feels fueled of love. She is willing to provide powerful advice when detailing the science and safety of vaccines. Keep this book in arm's reach as you support your infant for calm and direction.

(Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP, Seattle Children's Hospital, author of Mama Doc Medicine: Finding Calm and Confidence in Parenting, Child Health, and Work-Life Balance)

Fascinating! Think of all the controversial, hot-button topics that parents obsess about in a child’s first year―from vaccines and feeding, bed-sharing to sleep training. Weighing the scientific evidence, Callahan offers balanced insights and in-depth answers―a far cry from the oversimplified advice prescribed by many 'parenting experts.' The result: a must-have guide that’s substantive and extremely engaging.

(Jena Pincott, author of Do Chocolate Lovers Have Sweeter Babies? The Surprising Science of Pregnancy)

Dr. Callahan isn’t bossy, and isn’t out to tell you what she thinks. Her book tells you what the science says, and explains how we know what we know, and what things we still need to learn more about. There’s humility and warmth, here, which I think parents of newborns will find reassuring.

(The Pediatric Insider)

[Callahan] takes a compassionate, non-preachy approach with a goal of not telling the reader what to do but rather how to seek wise advice and make smart decisions…and to enjoy having a baby, which is what it is all about...

(Live Science)

This is science-based medicine writing at its best. Callahan doesn’t cherry-pick. She knows how to evaluate the entire body of research and put it into perspective along with practical parenting considerations. She enhances her message with a personal touch, including anecdotes about her own experiences as a new mother and about the experiences of her friends and family. If I had three thumbs, I would give this book a 3-thumbs-up recommendation.

(Harriet Hall, MD Science-Based Medicine)

... in Science of Mom, Alice Callahan, PhD combines the critical eye of a scientist with the heart of a mother to create a helpful resource for all people interested in evidence based infant care and parenting.

(Science & Sensibility (Lamaze International))

... a timely and necessary book for parents... It will help both moms and dads work together to choose the right parenting methods for them and give them a research-based approach to raising a child.

(Patheos)

... a fresh and enlightening approach... I’d highly recommend this book to any mom expecting her first child … or her fourth.

(Uncommon Motherhood)

... a solid resource for any new parent or parent to be. Callahan does the work of sorting through the science of baby’s first year, so you don’t have to.

(Raise Healthy Eaters)

[Callahan's] compassion and empathy for the difficulties of parenting shine through in every chapter, from breastfeeding to vaccines to feeding to sleeping.

(Forbes)

[ The Science of Mom] should be required reading for all new parents... She calms fears and provides parents with real facts. She doesn’t make the decisions for you, but she makes it a lot easier to make sound decisions.

(MomSense)

A book long-overdue in the parenting literature.

(Momma Data)

Name a complex or controversial topic and Callahan provides the science on both sides of the arguments to help parents make wise choices.

(Psychology Today)

The Science of Mom stands out from the crowd...an easy to read, certifiable resource.

(American Reference Books Annual)

Highly recommended by this pediatrician
By Roy Benaroch MD
A wonderful, smart, and compassionate book that offers great insight into how science can help parents make the best decisions for their children. This isn't just another book of opinions -- the author backs up what she's saying with solid, well-researched and well-documented studies. And when the answers aren't completely clear, that's truthfully explained. No dogma, no yelling, no insisting that one person is right. It's a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of parenting resources.

Enjoyable, Accessible, and Smart
By Meghan Anderson
As a faithful reader of the author's blog, I've been waiting for this book for quite a while. Now it's finally here and even better than I expected! Whether it's new information about infant sleep or well organized statistics on vaccine efficacy, it seems there's something interesting on every page. Alice Green Callahan has done an amazing job researching the science behind many topics that new parents care about. She presents her findings in a way that manages to be reasonably thorough and rigorous but still extremely accessible. While some of the material here been discussed on her blog, this book is far from simply a collection of blog posts; the format allows her to dig deeper and present more coherent surveys of the state of current knowledge in each case. This book is a must read for anyone interested in evidence based parenting practices.

Highly recommend
By H.A.
I found the author's blog about six months into starting the parenting gig, and I was ecstatic to find someone that was finally going to do all the research for me on the topics I was interested in. There is a lot of information out there for new parents to sort through, and it's so reassuring to know the research and analysis provided is supported by REAL science. Not anecdotes, not old wives' tales, but peer-reviewed published literature. The author always takes time to share any weak spots in the research. It's wonderful reading from the perspective of another mom that cares both about science and real life day to day reality.

I expected a lot from this book, and I was not disappointed. If you are already a fan of the blog, you'll enjoy new topics and research. If you are discovering the author for the first time, you'll be very pleased with her writing and research.

In response to the one star review... I think the reader misunderstood the purpose of this book. This isn't about preaching any particular parenting choices but about providing the science behind the many, many topics that come up during a child's first year of life.

The Hunting Hypothesis: A Personal Conclusion Concerning the Evolutionary Nature of Man: Robert Ardrey's Nature of Man Series, Volume 4B

"For millions of years, we have survived as hunters. In the few short millennia since our divorce from that necessity, there has been no time for significant biological change - anatomical, physiological, or behavioral. Today, we have small hope of comprehending ourselves and our world unless we understand that man still, in his inmost being, remains a hunter."

From this premise, supported by the accumulated research and observations of two decades of anthropological investigation, Robert Ardrey guides the listener on a remarkable journey of discovery through 20 million years of man's prehistory: from the days when his ancestors first emerged from the forests of Africa during the benevolent warmth and rains of the Miocene, through the unremitting drought of the Pliocene and the dramatic climactic shifts of the Pleistocene, down to those few thousand years past when man emerged at last onto the stage of recorded history as a fully evolved hunting animal.

In this, Ardrey's fourth book on the subject of man's origins and nature, the author addresses himself with bold logic and insights to that basic question that haunts the cellars of our conscious mind: Why is man man?

Praise for the 1976 edition:

"This is easily the best of Robert Ardrey's books. It is brilliant in its summary of recent findings, it is wonderfully persuasive in its argument about our essential human nature, and it makes a satisfying unity out of Ardrey's thinking in all his books." - Max Lerner

"I believe that Robert Ardrey's books are the most important to be written since WWII...a unique and beautiful account of the making of man." - Antony Jay

Very well written discussion of our hunting ancestsors.
By Henry B. Coons
This book (along with Ardrey's other three in what I think of as a sequence) is one of the most important books I have ever read. It (they) are mostly built around the discoveries made in Africa in the early and mid twentieth century of the remains of those of our ancestors who spent millions of years becoming us. Or, from our point of view, how we came to be the way we are.

Unfortunately I only discovered them within the last six or seven years. At various times, when they were published, two or three of them were best sellers... but I guess I was busy with something a lot less important.

His writing is the very best I have run into in this field and has made reading, and rereading, them a literary pleasure in addition to explaining a lot about why I do what I do, and why history is the way it is.

Read this book. If you do I hope you are as pleased as I have been.

For your consideration
By Richard Aubrey
Robert Ardrey was, first, a writer.
While this makes his books excellent reading, and, as one reviewer put it, an actual pleasure, it does bring the possibility that he could over-write an issue, making it more plausible than it ought to be.
He has fully educated himself in the subject matter, so he is a well-informed science writer and not a generalist taking a shot at an interesting area of thought.
The hunting hypothesis begins with the assertion that we as a race have spent 95% or our time on this earth as hunters and that this must have had an effect. Depending on how you classify pre-homo sap humans, the number could be north of 99%.
This line of thinking can be called "evolutionary psychology" or or "ev-psych", which is despised by, among others, many feminists. Liberals who would never consider themselves creationists insist that a million years of environmental pressure can have no impact at all on behavioral propensities. If it did, there could be no reason to blame the patriarchy, western civ, capitalism, or any other of their usual scapegoats. And no prospect of learning our way out of one or another set of problems. We're stuck.
"African Genesis", whose primary assertion, that we are born to the weapon and to conflict, depends in part on a sequence of pre-human types. Some of the sequences have been reorganized by subsequent discoveries and so the logic of the theory called into question. Still, "African Genesis" has a great deal to recommend it. This is not to say the new sequence of one hominid supplanting or following another ruins Ardrey's theory, but that his theory must be applied with the new sequence (new for now) to see if it still works. Which, I expect, nobody is interesting in doing.
If you are interested in reading a well-written, clear, well-supported idea for the basis of some of our human institutions and behaviors, this book is worth reading. You may not agree, but it will be a useful exercise to dispute it.

One of the best books I've ever read
By Henry B. Coons
"The Hunting Hypothesis" is an extremely readable and interesting book concerning the discoveries made in Africa about ancestors of ours who lived primarily by hunting. These ancestors were around for quite a long time and evolved AS HUNTERS. Both physically and neurologically and/or mentally/instictively we are now, largely, what they became as those of the hunters who tended to survive in each generation.

I wasn't kidding when I said it is one of the best books I have ever read. Those who have read Ardrey's "African Genesis, Territorial Imperative and Social Contract" will probably already know what a great writer he was.

Q & A, by Vikas Swarup

[Read by Christopher Simpson]

Former tiffin boy Ram Mohammad Thomas has correctly answered twelve questions on a television quiz show to win a cool one billion rupees. But he is brutally slung in prison on suspicion of cheating-- for how else could a poor, uneducated orphan know so much: the name of the smallest planet, global capitals, and diplomatic policy? In the order of the questions on the show, Ram tells us which amazing adventures in his street-kid life gave him the answers. From orphanages to brothels, gangsters to beggar-masters, Ram's story is brimming with the chaotic comedy, heart-stopping tragedy, and tear-inducing joyousness of modern India.

From Publishers Weekly
When Ram Mohammad Thomas, an orphaned, uneducated waiter from Mumbai, wins a billion rupees on a quiz show, he finds himself thrown in jail. (Unable to pay out the prize, the program's producers bribed local authorities to declare Ram a cheater.) Enter attractive lawyer Smita Shah, to get Ram out of prison and listen to him explain, via flashbacks, how he knew the answers to all the show's questions. Indian diplomat Swarup's fanciful debut is based on a sound premise: you learn a lot about the world by living in it (Ram has survived abandonment, child abuse, murder). And just as the quiz show format is meant to distill his life story (each question prompts a separate flashback), Ram's life seems intended to distill the predicament of India's underclass in general. Rushdie's Midnight's Children may have been a model: Ram's brash yet innocent voice recalls that of Saleem Sinai, Rushdie's narrator, and the sheer number of Ram's near-death adventures represents the life of the underprivileged in India, just as Saleem wore a map of India, quite literally, on his face. But Swarup's prose is sometimes flat and the story's picaresque form turns predictable. Ram is a likable fellow, but this q&a with him, though clever, grows wearying.

From Booklist
Swarup's inventive debut traces the fortunes of Ram Mohammad Thomas from "Asia's biggest slum" to his sudden acquisition of enormous wealth as the biggest winner on the popular quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? A poor, uneducated waiter, Ram is arrested after the final episode in the belief that he must have cheated. In jail he shares his hardscrabble life with his lawyer: his abandonment at birth in a used clothing bin, the church orphanage where he was dubbed an "idiot orphan boy," the foster home where children were purposely crippled and forced to beg, the estate of an Australian diplomat who was really a spy, the home of an aging Bollywood actress, and his meager waiter job. Each chapter in Ram's life provided him with a correct answer on the show, as a la Forrest Gump, he has been in the right place at the right time. Ram's funny and poignant odyssey explores the causes of good and evil and illustrates how, with a little luck, the best man sometimes wins. Deborah Donovan

Outstanding Picaresque Debut
By A. Ross
Despite heartrending descriptions of sexual abuse, racism, poverty, homeless and much, much, more in modern India, this is an utterly enjoyable picaresque adventure that is one of the best reads of the year. In the hands of another author, the brief life story Ram Mohammad Thomas would probably be told as a simple tearjerker tragedy and the reader would be left to shake their head sorrowfully at the plight of another poor third-world soul. However, Swarup has a gimmick framework up his sleeve, and it works like a charm. Granted, one has to be willing to go along with the premise that this entire structure is based on coincidence of colossal proportions -- readers who aren't willing to suspend disbelief will probably not last more than a few chapters.

We first meet the 18-year-old protagonist in jail, where he sits accused of defrauding the popular TV game show "Who Wants to Be A Billionaire?" (in rupees). Despite being abandoned at birth, uneducated, and left to fend for himself for most of his life, it seems Ram somehow managed to answer the show's twelve questions correctly. To all outside observers, his social standing and lack of education appear to preclude this happening legitimately. However, just as the police are about to unleash some heavy manners on him, a mysterious lawyer intervenes and takes him away. The story then unfolds question by question, as Ram tells her via flashbacks to his life just how he managed to know each answer.

Ram's life story unfolds as a series of episodes ranging from the horrific to the merely tragicomic, and in a sense, one can view him as emblematic of India's lost children, and the book as caustic social commentary on contemporary India. Aside from being abandoned at birth, he must contend with a pedophile priest, a closeted homosexual movie star, a violent, drunken neighbor bent on incest, international espionage, child slavery, numerous thieves, a suicidal employer, and the deaths of several close friends. And yet, despite this bleak subject matter, the intrepid Ram keeps doggedly moving forward and surviving. This isn't done in a sentimental, "triumph of the human sprit", after-school special way, but in a straightforward manner that shows a confused young boy doing whatever it takes to live. And of course, the ultimate moral of the story is that those who keep their eyes and ears open in life can learn a lot about it without any books. An excellent story, well-told, and doubtless to be made into a film.

A clever plot that keeps your attention throughout
By Julia Flyte
Ram Mohammad Thomas is a boy from the Indian slums who has entered a "Who wants to be a millionaire" style television quiz show. Despite his lack of formal education, his life experiences have perfectly equipped him to answer each question that comes up. Because the show's organizers are sure that he must have cheated, they ask him to explain how he was able to answer such difficult and obscure questions. Each chapter deals with another question and answer, and as the book progresses his very colorful life story is also gradually revealed.

This is not the most well written book I've read, but the way that the plot unfolds is very clever and keeps the reader's attention throughout. As each question is revealed, you can't help thinking "okay, now how is he going to integrate THIS into Ram's story?" and it's fun to see the way that he does, while also advancing the central plot. Slumdog Millionaire tears along at a quick pace: some parts are very amusing while others are very sad, but Swarup doesn't dwell on either. The way it all comes together at the end is highly contrived, but does make for a satisfactory conclusion.

If you enjoy books about India, there are other books that are more realistic or better written (I especially recommend the wonderful and highly moving novel "A Fine Balance"), but this is an easy and entertaining story that captures much of the essence of this fascinating country.

UPDATED 12/27: I have now seen the film Slumdog Millionaire. While the film has the taken the central theme and structure of the book, it also has many differences - for starters, the hero's name. Many plot elements of Ram/Dev's life story are entirely different in the film vs the book. Essentially the film is a very simplified version and hinges on the romance with Latika, which is not the case in the book. For me, the film works brilliantly, but it is not a slavish adaptation. This book is more "the book that inspired the film" rather than "the book of the film".

wonderful plot, extremely well told.
By madhu m
an 18 year old uneducated waiter from bombay wins the largest ever prize-money awarded in a "who wants to be a billionaire?" quiz show. naturally, the organisers suspect foul play. did he have insider information about the questions? or did someone in the audience tip him off using signs? how could a person of such low socail standing know the answers to these difficult questions? vikas swarup's protagonist, tells his life story through each question. it just so happens that through a series of enormous coincidences, incidents in his life have provided him the answers to justthese 12 questions. as he narrates his life story question by question and answer by answer, we discover a plucky hero who has fought ahead in life through sheer courage and mental strength.

although, the stories start off bleak dealing with such weighty topics as pedophilia, homosexuality, incest, child abuse, the underworld .. the overall effect of the novel is sprightly and enjoyable. while this might not be for the squeamish, it is bound to provide good payoffs for those who stick by it.

i was lucky to be able to lay my hands on an advance copy of this book. i am normally very skeptical of indian writers in english, but vikas swarup offers us a polished debut that showcases good storytelling skills.

i would recommend this novel for people interested in a ripping yarn, and not for those interested in reading about the underbelly of indian metropolis life. this is a story with liberal license used by the author, thatstretches ones believability at points, but when the plotting is as interesting as this, one can indulge the author in his fancies.

A great read. As good as "Reminiscences."
By timcrack@alum.mit.edu
A neat collection of short stories that appeared in McClure's Magazine around 1900. Some characters reappear in different stories, but the stories are each self-contained. This is the earliest work in which I have found the short-selling quote: "He who sells what isn't his'n, Must buy it back or go to pris'n (page 173)." If you want to feel the brass Ticky-ticky-ticky-tick of the ticker then read this book. The first story "The Lady and Her Bonds" appears to have been the inspiration for Lefevre's novel "Sampson Rosk of Wall Street." If you liked "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator," you will love this book. Don't be dissuaded by the "out of print" label probably attached to this work - it cn still be found and is worth the search.

Suprisingly Accurate, sometimes Ridiculously Accurate...
By Redburn
Written in the early 1900s but definitely (notwithstanding the simplicity of the short story format),and aptly captures the street and its psychology in both character traits, basic technical workings of certain market dynamics in nicely terse yet woefully realistic stories.

The thing about this book, is that, it appears to be just an old cheap book, with somewhat outdated 'dialogue', and lack of embellishment in the style of writing, yet it's so damn accurate and spot on with its plots and outcomes and presentation of prevailing human characteristics and the markets while really just talking about a handful of protagonists.

These stories are about the things that will not change, regardless of what has occured in this most recent market apocalypse.

I've read a good deal of these newer contemporary 'market books', ie) Lehman, bear sterns, the book about paulson's hedge fund, and they all fall way short of these simple stories 110 years later.

Can't really sum it up well in this review. Like I said, it appears on the surface to be chicken-scratch on toilet paper(I actually got it on the Kindle) but damn, if you ever traded or worked in banking or brokerage, you'd definitely appreciate this book.

Unreadable and useless
By anonymous investor and reader
This is an automated transcript of the original text. The result is filled with spelling, grammar, and structural mistakes. Words and sentences are cut out, or missing. The reader will spend more time trying to make sense of the text than enjoying a literary read. I stopped reading after only a few pages. This is an insult to the writer and to literature, and a definite waste of money. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS. PLEASE DO NOT ENCOURAGE THIS DESTRUCTION OF LITERATURE. If you really want to read this book as I do, then I suggest you pay the price for the original version. It's a shame to call this a book. It's also a shame for Amazon to encourage the distribution of such junk.

For now, he's squatting in a collapsing house, working as a stone mason, driving a jacked up pickup truck that he crashes into everything. As a close friend Ods in his sleep, Lee falls into a three-way relationship with two college girls, June Doom and K Neon. F250 is a novel equal parts about growing up, and being torn apart.

Review
"Refreshing. Bud is a good one." Otherppl

From the Author
This is my second novel. It was written mostly in the back of a pickup truck on coffee breaks and lunch breaks at the Byway oil refinery in Linden, Nj during the summer of 2013. I typed it out on my cellphone and edited it at night when I came home from work. I was working as a boilermaker when I wrote this, welding and repairing equipment that processed crude oil into gasoline. That's fitting, because when I did have an F250 pickup truck in between 2003-2006, it drank all the gasoline I could afford to dump into its dual tanks. That was back when I was working as a stone mason, myself, much like the narrator of the book. I built water falls into swimming pools then, too, just like there narrator of the book. I did play in a band. I did know girls like K Neon and June Doom. This is a novel. This is a work of fiction.

From the Inside Flap
"Bud Smith is a great writer. F250 is full of blood, Yager shots, BMW hatred, and people with their faces ripped off." Scott McClanahan, Hill William and Crappalacia
"How does this work? Bud Smith is a wild and wily bard, and his song about a songster is what the Beats might have written - if they'd had half the self-awareness and subtle hu- mility Smith writes with." Amber Sparks, author of May We Shed These Human Bodies

Oddly beautiful
By Benoit Lelievre
This novel sneaked up on me. There aren't any standout moments of gut-wrenching emotions, but the raw journal-like approach, the rock n' roll romanticism and the effervescent visual poetry of Bud Smith make him unique in his melancholy. F250 is an unreal journey of a man who's life is coming unhinged. It's a tragedy you're not allowed to cry about, something you read with an inexplicable solemnity.

It wouldn't be an understatement to say I enjoyed the s*** out of F250, but I'm not entirely sure I could explain you why or sell it to you in a way that would make it justice. It's just something I thoroughly liked because I knew exactly what Bud Smith was trying to say. The novel worked my sense of empathy to death, like I think any great novel should do. If you're ever had your life not together, you're going see a part of yourself in F250, a part that you sometimes curiously miss.

F 250 by Bud Smith
By Ray N.
I was privileged to receive an advanced review copy of Bud Smith's new novel, F 250. Here are some thoughts.
The protagonist of F 250 is Lee Casey. He works in construction and plays guitar in two bands. One band, called Ottermeat, plays adventurous music that Lee respects. The other band, Bedspin, plays bland songs penned by the rich kid in the band who pays for everything. Compared to his friends, band mates, and string of girl friends, Lee is relatively worldly. He's been on his own for a while. His mother, while living, is nowhere to be found, her presence in his life limited to a note in his pocket. Sure, like the others, Lee has dreams. One goes along the lines of, Go West, Young Man, and cut thee a record. But he's already taken an exploratory trip out west. He knows "that there weren't any answers in California that you couldn't find in New Jersey." He likes working with his hands, making things. So he pays the bills by working in construction. He took a pass on college. Not so much because the cost of college was out of reach, but that it simply didn't suit him. He loves the shore. The mountains? Not so much.

That is, in Smith's able hands, Lee is a well-drawn, wholly realistic character, even from the get go. As the story unfolds, Lee's character is developed yet more. Story-wise, F 250 is episodic in structure, yet realistic. What is life, after all but a set of episodes? Some are what might be called "little scenes"—quiet, poignant ones that you're pretty sure you've never seen, no matter how many "indie" books and films you have under your belt. In one such scene, Lee is eating dinner. It's the first time in his life, as far as he can recall, that he's ever sat down at a table and had a meal with a family. And it isn't even his family. It's the lady he got in a traffic accident with. (His fault.) When he comes to her house to pay for the damage, she invites him inside.

In another such scene, Lee recalls the time long ago when his friend, Trish, then nine, gave him a wooly caterpillar. The last three lines of the scene are:
"Thank you," I said.
"It's just a bug," she said, "world's full of 'em."
"Still, I appreciate it."

In the course of this novel, Lee and the other characters endure a string of setbacks. Broken romances. A band member quits. The house everyone lives in is torn down. An overdose death. A near-drowning. And three times, the F250 rear-ends another car, Lee never quite wrapping his head around the perhaps too-boring concept of keeping a safe distance. But that's just as well. Who wants perfect characters? Nobody! What we do want though, are well-rounded, believable characters who react to what life throws at them, and take control, to the extent that they can. We also like—I like, anyway—stories that end not tied up in a bow, but with subtle hints of better things to come. And on this, and all aspects of F 250, Bud Smith delivers.

F 250 is scheduled to be released in April. Grab a copy, be it virtual or physical, and enjoy.

An Accomplished and Honest Novel about a Man Living the Only Life He Knows
By B. Sides
Some lives are tougher to live than other ones. In F 250, Bud Smith sets out to show how hard work and perseverance have benefits even if they can’t necessarily save us from our fate.

Smith structures his novel around the life of Lee Casey. Lee is a relatable, authentic young man who thrives inside his masculinity. Lee plays in two bands. He builds things with his hands. He works in construction. Lee is a man’s man.

Lee’s life is trying because, at the core of his being, he is a dreamer living on the outskirts of his fantasies. He admits, “If I’d been given an opportunity, just one opportunity, you better believe I would have jumped on it.” Although he struggles in pinpointing exactly what will give him his peace—money, women, music, he still craves that hope for something new, something wonderful.

He is a restless guy, and his dreams appear to be the only thing that can soothe him.

F 250 is a quiet, episodic novel, but you might be surprised to find that out.

Smith puts us into a world that is raw, gritty, and dark. There are scenes oozing with jealousy, romance, and death. There are multiple traffic accidents. People overdose. Someone nearly drowns.

It sounds like an action extravaganza, but it’s not. And that’s Smith’s greatest accomplishment. Instead of getting lost in all of the happenings of F 250, Smith focuses in on his protagonist. This isn’t the story of a place or of a group. It’s the story of a man.

The way Smith builds Lee is quite remarkable. Lee is humble. Speaking of his possessions, Lee admits, “But what did I have anyway? No money in the bank, of course. Material possessions adding up to just a guitar, an amp, effect pedal stomp boxes, a drawer full of t-shirts, a wheelbarrow, some shovels, a couple boxes of random cassette tapes, stacks of paperback books. Nothing anyone would want.” He’s also kind. He cares about people and wants to do what is right.

While Lee is incredibly likeable, he’s also not perfect. At times, he can be a little daft. But, really, can’t we all be that way?

Bud Smith’s F 250 is an accomplished and honest novel about a man living the only life that he knows.

Inside the Machine: Art and Invention in the Electronic Age, by Megan Prelinger

A visual history of the electronic age captures the collision of technology and art―and our collective visions of the future.

A hidden history of the twentieth century’s brilliant innovations―as seen through art and images of electronics that fed the dreams of millions.

A rich historical account of electronic technology in the twentieth century, Inside the Machine journeys from the very origins of electronics, vacuum tubes, through the invention of cathode-ray tubes and transistors to the bold frontier of digital computing in the 1960s.

But, as cultural historian Megan Prelinger explores here, the history of electronics in the twentieth century is not only a history of scientific discoveries carried out in laboratories across America. It is also a story shaped by a generation of artists, designers, and creative thinkers who gave imaginative form to the most elusive matter of all: electrons and their revolutionary powers.

As inventors learned to channel the flow of electrons, starting revolutions in automation, bionics, and cybernetics, generations of commercial artists moved through the traditions of Futurism, Bauhaus, modernism, and conceptual art, finding ways to link art and technology as never before.

A visual tour of this dynamic era, Inside the Machine traces advances and practical revolutions in automation, bionics, computer language, and even cybernetics. Nestled alongside are surprising glimpses into the inner workings of corporations that shaped the modern world: AT&T, General Electric, Lockheed Martin.

While electronics may have indelibly changed our age, Inside the Machine reveals a little-known explosion of creativity in the history of electronics and the minds behind it.

Review
“Fascinating…. [A] fantastically geeky visual tour of tech industry history as seen through the lens of the commercial art that helped popularize it.” (Meg Miller - Fast Company)

“Attentive readers of Prelinger’s lively chronology will come away with an appreciation of how the visual representations of technology are integral to our understanding of it.” (Chris Rasmussen - Bookforum)

“Unusual and insightful…. Filled with retro tech-industry ads, magazine covers and other commercial artworks, this erudite book takes readers on a cultural history tour that sharply reveals ‘art’s ability to touch the intangible and render it visible.’” (John Wilwol - San Francisco Chronicle)

“[An] unusual and compelling study.” (Nature)

“An essential and eye-popping visual history of electronics, a glimpse of the electronic infrastructure captured in the brief moment before it miniaturized down to a scale too small for the eye to see, disappearing from our ordinary view forever, even as it burrowed into our buildings, streets, vehicles and even our bodies.” (Cory Doctorow coeditor of Boing Boing and author of In Real Life and Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free)

“A highly original cultural history of 20th-century technology examined through the lens of commercial art…. Sophisticated in its grasp of science and technological history but also accessible to general readers.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A tour de force of the computer and electronic age that takes readers on a fascinating voyage that spans everything from graphic renderings of theoretical space gondolas to depictions of transistors as the route to utopia. Like Trevor Paglen’s exploration of the visual aspects of secrecy, Megan Prelinger’s Inside the Machine provides readers with a unique window into the history of electronics and computer science during the Cold War, and beyond. Merging science with art, Prelinger challenges our linear notions of scientific progress, helping us see a new dimension to our modern technological world.” (Sharon Weinberger, author of Imaginary Weapons: A Journey Through the Pentagon’s Scientific Underworld)

“Because electrons are mostly invisible, our visualizations of them tell us more about our dreams than about electrons. This cool and unusual book gathers our earliest collective dreams about circuits and electronics and makes them visible. It got me thinking about our assumptions for tomorrow. I love it when a book like this makes me see the world differently.” (Kevin Kelly, senior maverick for Wired magazine and author of What Technology Wants)

An Idiosyncratic Yet Worthwhile Effort
By chemical007
As an engineer, I am always receptive to efforts to bridge the gap between art, culture, history, and technology.
And I am always nearly disappointed. Particularly egregious examples are the sad efforts to interpret particle physics with art, as in the case of "resident artists at CERN" or galleries of symbolic paintings of gluons at Stanford. The burden of failure to accomplishment this fusion must surely lie primarily with the artist, who rarely is tutored sufficiently in the demanding details of the science he/she is supposed to describe graphically or via the written word. It gets clumsy, awkward and inevitably acquires that comical aspect ascribed to "interpretive dance" by cynics.
Prelinger's work narrowly misses these shortcomings, and yet, in certain dimensions, rises to the level of admirable academic cultural analysis. The selection of art and photography that depicts the subject matter through time is extremely pithy and selective and would qualify as a fine art book in and of itself. They are artistically absorbing and evocative of the period they represent, qualifying in and of themselves as an education in the subject matter at hand.
Significant problems arise when Prelinger undertakes further deconstruction with a painfully contrived prose style very much in the "psychobabble mode", using arcane and arch language shabbily gilded with a faux academic patina reminiscent of of a pretentious first-year art student attempting to impress anyone who might overhear them at a coffeehouse. Yes, something did happen and it bears examining, but that can accomplished with a straightforward elucidation that bypasses the tedious pedantry imposed here.
The author also displays a considerable uncertainty about technology, waffling unsteadily at points and at other times simply being wholly incorrect - vacuum tubes are labelled as semiconductor technology, for instance. It is obvious she shrinks from a deeper technical comprehension in favor of an artistic interpretation. This is a pity, because the reader can sense Prelinger has the necessary intellectual chops to fully explore what must historically be the most influential shaping of the human consciousness by technology and its attendant media ever.

Having been exposed to such grave shortcomings, I nevertheless felt attracted to this book and certainly felt it can hold the informed reader's attention. If you can filter out the pseudo-chic posings of the literary style, there is some serious grist to be milled and, when the author finds surer footing, a very solid exposition unfolds that can lead the technical mind into areas of artistic inquiry that would normally be inaccessible. The treatment of punch cards, paper tape, magnetic tape, for example, and their representation in industrial art and advertising was eye-opening, and at times riveting. Intervals of sound and compelling critical interpretation appear at sufficient frequency throughout the book to command the reader's respect and hold their attention. The fundamental construction of the narrative often survives the inadvertently camp treatment and presents as a nice balance of rigor and deft artistic insight - the book unfolds with a smoothness similar to a nicely-engineered car travelling down a well-maintained highway with pleasant views to the left and right.

In summation, I can easily see technically-savvy denizens of the electronics culture, particularly those old enough to have personally experienced the earlier histories explored here, grousing unhappily at the numerous historical and scientific errors, frumping at the literary affectations and yet still persevering and ultimately concluding it was an informative and worthwhile read.

Technology through the lens of art: the graphical presentation of tubes, transistors, computers, & more
By John E. Branch Jr.
In this book, cultural historian Megan Prelinger surveys the visual presentation of advances in electronics. To study how increasingly abstract developments were given tangible form in order to convey them to businesses, workers in the field, and the general public is an ingenious and provocative idea. But reading the book provides a mixed experience.

Anyone who grew up learning about the scientific and technical developments she chronicles in her text is likely to trip repeatedly over her descriptions, and a reader who doesn’t already know may come away misinformed or confused. For instance, Prelinger speaks of vacuum tubes “sorting” electrons, when a better term would be controlling or modulating their flow, and she seems unclear on a few aspects of computers and programming. And yet the book’s bountiful illustrations are wondrous, almost flashback-inducing for anyone whose experience goes back very far. In her commentary, Prelinger now and then serves up bits of jargon, but she’s almost uniformly clear and insightful, helping the reader more fully to see and understand what one is looking at in the artwork.

The visual system makes up a substantial part of the human brain, and as ancient cave paintings suggest, our grasp of the world has always relied on our ability to represent it graphically. Yet the 20th century may be the first we could call the age of the image, as it was also the beginning of the electronic age. Despite its missteps, Prelinger’s act of visual archaeology in this book does a service to both.

Review
"It was a runaway success when published in 1811 by soldier Francis Grose, but now The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is getting tongues wagging again after being published online." —Telegraph

From the Publisher
You don’t need to be a philologist or an etymologist to become engrossed in this book on the "vulgar tongue," popular language and not crude or coarse talk. This is the classic of all classics. First published in 1785, this is a reprint of the third edition that appeared in 1931. It contains the fashionable words and favorite expressions of those olden days, many of which have endured to this day and others that have long since been abandoned. Who would ever think that a "damper" was a snack before dinner? On the other hand, some might agree that "poisoned" is an apt expression for "big with child." It is guaranteed that you will find much to chuckle over in this book when you come across such expressions as "belly cheat," which is defined as an apron. There are also terms that might very well match current practices, such as "whitewashed," which refers to "one who has taken the benefit of an act of insolvency to defraud his creditors." You won’t want to put this book down.

About the Author
Francis Grose (b. before 11 June 1731 – 12 June 1791) was an English antiquary, draughtsman, and lexicographer.

Dictionary of Slang
By John Pool
This work is one that I have found to be entertaining from several reads. This is definately not a sit down and plow through it book, but rather one can pick up and put down as needed. As a whole, I found in interesting from a perspective of much of what we consider normal everyday language these days was only a couple of hundred years ago considered the "ebonics" of the time. It does very much carry the tone and verbage of the day, which may disinterest some, but fans of Victorian, Edwardian, or Elizabethan period speech should adore this, as well those whom are interested in such through some of the more fanciful spin offs such as Steampunk fans.

I would say that this if you are looking for new (old) ways to spew forth vulgar phrases you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for phrases and even the occasional insult of Shakespearan wit, you can find more than a few gems within this book.

A classic now available in electronic format
By R. Shelby
Most students of the English language are familiar with the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue". Others will not be. It is not quite an obscure work but it does occupy a rather small niche. Although attributed to Francis Grose, the 1811 Dictionary is actually an updating of Grose' "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785). Grose died in 1791; the 1811 update was provided by a group of men who acknowledged Grose as the primary author.

Grose collected words and phrases used by the common people, i.e. the everyday speech of everyday folks. Thus "vulgar" in the title means "common" and not "dirty", "rude" or "nasty". The 1811 Dictionary includes language which was ignored by lexicographers. Most scholars of the time felt that such language was not worth recording or reporting. Grose and those who updated the dictionary in 1811 probably were motivated by amusement as much as by lexicography. That is, they found the speech of the "common folk" entertaining. There is no doubt that slang can be amusing but it is also often enlightening, e.g. by providing cultural or sociological insights. Regardless of the motivation of the compilers, the 1811 Dictionary is a useful work for students of English language and culture.

Those interested in the topic of American slang will find the work of Wentworth & Flexner interesting. Two particularly good volumes are Dictionary of American Slang Based on Historical Principles and Speaking Freely: A Guided Tour of American English from Plymouth Rock to Silicon Valley.

Great Entertainment
By Skyler B. Bailey
This is a dictionary, written by a british soldier just after the American Revolution, of slang terms. The word "vulgar" means slang, though some of them are vulgar. This book was banned in military camps at the time. This is a second edition which came out in 1811.

This book is hysterical, both educational and entertaining. It shows how normal people spoke over 200 years ago, and provides endless possibilities for insulting your friends. My friends and I are having a great time with it.

On a more serious note, it was recommended to me by the folks with whom I am a Revolutionary War reenactor, on the premise that I should learn to use some of these words.
