Rawson's writing is barely coherent, and the poor Kindle copy makes things even worse. Forget it.

Connecting the Drops: A Citizens' Guide to Protecting Water Resources, by Karen Schneller-McDonald

The need for improved water resource protection, beginning with grassroots action, is urgent. The water we use depends on networks of wetlands, streams, and watersheds. Land-use activities, however, are changing these natural systems. Often these changes result in ecological damage, flooding, water pollution, and reduced water supply. We need a healthy environment that sustains our personal and community health; we also need vibrant and sustainable economic development that does not destroy the benefits we derive from nature. Our ability to accomplish both depends on how well we can "connect the drops."

In this book, Karen Schneller-McDonald presents the basics of water resource protection: ecology and watershed science; techniques for evaluating environmental impacts; obstacles to protection and how to overcome them; and tips for protection strategies that maximize chances for success. Schneller-McDonald makes clear the important connections among natural cycles, watersheds, and ecosystems; the benefits they provide; and how specific development activities affect water quality and supply.

The methods described in Connecting the Drops have broad application in diverse geographic locations. The environmental details may differ, but the methods are the same. For water resource managers and concerned citizens alike, Connecting the Drops helps readers interpret scientific information and contextualize news media reports and industry ads―ultimately offering "how to" guidance for developing resource protection strategies. Review

"Schneller-McDonald (president, Hickory Creek environmental consulting firm, Red Hook, NY) offers an authoritative review of methods for water conservation and use, which is especially important as many regions of the world currently face shortages. . . . She touches on many water-use flashpoint areas, including the Colorado River basin, Chesapeake Bay, the Florida Everglades, the Great Lakes, and the harmful effects of dams, acid rain, coal mining, sewage disposal, pesticides, and mercury. There are extensive chapter notes and a solid bibliography, including websites. A detailed appendix contains checklists for evaluating streams and wetlands: features, conditions, pertinent questions to raise, etc. VERDICT Highly recommended for environmentalists, resource managers, those concerned with pollution, and naturalists.―Henry T. Armistead, Library Journal (Sept. 1, 2015)

"Clean water is a basic need. Understanding the influence of land use activities on our water resources is critical to supporting the practices and policies that protect them. Connecting the Drops offers down-to-earth guidance that will help individuals and communities recognize stewardship opportunities and act."―Mark Ruffalo, founder, Water Defense

"Connecting the Drops offers both knowledge and hope; it is an essential guide to action and overcoming the global water crisis."―Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods

Connecting the drops
By Clare O'Beara
I find this book an excellent guide to the identification and protection of water resources and natural environments. While the location is America the lessons can be adapted for anywhere and we can find websites equivalent to FEMA and USGS once we know what to look for, in other lands.

I really like that the author early tells us that this book will help the reader to protect water resources. In other words, the reader is not being lectured to but aided and enlisted in this vital task.

If you don't know the jargon, don't worry, there are explanations and diagrams to help you understand a watershed, a local basin, ground water etc. Once you know what it is you are trying to protect you can check out the plans for the area or the effect of tree removal, road salting, mining, draining etc. on the people and wildlife. Hydraulic fracking and open-cast mining are featured with a lot of information and actual cases such as Parachute Creek.

When building occurs wetlands are often drained, but these low-lying areas absorb extra rainfall and river spill, so new houses are likely to flood. Dumping or dog walking in watersheds leads to contaminated drinking water. Introduced non-native plants can outcompete the local ones, including in lakes, and fertiliser runoff or bank erosion can smother a river and its fish. In one cited example, restoring large wetlands led to a drop in mosquito numbers as the creatures which fed on insects returned. The more species, including threatened species, the healthier the area.

The book would serve excellently as a handbook for a person with a suitable qualification who wishes to provide expert witness advice and surveys. Information is given on carrying out a campaign about clean water, and the drawn-out process which is best tackled by keeping files and dated records. Local authorities, journalists and environmental supporters of all ages will benefit by reading Connecting The Drops. This is not intended for young people but anyone with an interest can read it and learn a lot.

Roadside Geology of Oregon, by Marli B. Miller

When the first edition of Roadside Geology of Oregon was published in 1978, it was revolutionary—the first book in a series designed to educate, inspire, and wow nongeologists. Back then, the implications of plate tectonic theory were only beginning to shape geologic research and discussion. Geologists hadn’t yet learned that Oregon’s Klamath and Blue Mountains were pieces of far-traveled island arcs and ocean basins that had been piled against the growing North American continent. Steaming volcanoes, ghost forests, recent landslides, and towns heated with geothermal energy attest to Oregon’s still-prominent position at the edge of an active tectonic plate.

Author, photographer, and geologist Marli Miller has written a completely new second edition based on the most up-to-date understanding of Oregon’s geology. Spectacular photographs showcase the state’s splendor while also helping readers understand geologic processes at work. Maps generated with the latest technology show you just how far the science of geology—and Mountain Press—has come since 1978, a time when today’s takenfor-granted computers were as new as plate tectonic theory. Roadside Geology of Oregon, Second Edition, is a must-have for every Oregon resident, student, and rockhound.

Review
Oregon has some spectacular geology and for all the rockhounds out there, UO geologist Marli B. Miller's newly updated Roadside Geology of Oregon provides everything you need to know about pulling over on road trips to gawk at feldspar and fossils. The first version of this guide came out in 1978, and a whole lot of awesome geology has taken place since then.
The book is easy to follow, including a plethora of maps and details descriptions of how Oregon's iconic landscapes came into being. For example: Oregon's oldest exposed rocks are 400 million years old, found in central Oregon. And how cool is it that Mount Pisgah is made of "altered 30-million-year-old basaltic lavas"? If you agree, then bring this book along on your next road trip so you can enthrall (or annoy, if they're spoilsports) your family with the age in millions of years of each passing rock formation. --Amy Schneider, Eugene Weekly

"The geology information is breathtaking, but the easy format appeals to the humble traveler looking for a new destination as well. The photography is stunning and provides a current view of the state...Discover Oregon on a whole new level."--Wendy Stevens --Portland Book Review

I just finished reading Miller's 2nd edition yesterday and am very pleased with it. I live in Oregon, am not a geologist or scientist, and have taken the 1st edition on many trips, and I expect to take the new edition on many more. It is superior in many ways to the 1978 1st edition (with no disrespect intended to Alt's and Hydmann's first venture into the roadside geology business). I also think it is one of the best written of the 15 or so Roadside Geology books I own.

She has used more modern names for the state regions and has slightly rearranged the order of presentation for the better. She has paid close attention to details, thousands of them. (I wonder what her notebooks look like.) Evidently, she has personally driven most if not all of the roads described in the book, and she seems to have taken most of the photographs herself. (She likes polarizers and deep blue skies!)

What does Miller do that makes her book so good? She seems to have tried to reach a broad range of readers, both those who already are familiar with geological concepts, explanations, and vocabulary, and those who are approaching a geology book for the first time. For example, geologists think of rock formations and accreted terranes the way that novelists and biographers think of people as characters: you've got to give them names and ages and a certain "personality". Then the writer has to refer to dozens of them, but not lose the reader, who may be picking up the book months after reading it the last time. In the 1st edition Alt & Hyndman solved the problem by avoiding formation names and just using descriptions of the rock types in them. Miller bravely uses the actual names of formations and adds succinct reminders most of the time of what the formation contains. It worked for me, and now terms like Siletzia, Columbia River Basalt Group, Tyee, and Clarno all make music for me. Her other science writing skills are very good.

She succeeds in making it much easier to actually locate a site while being a passenger and reading aloud the relevant passage to the driver. She often gives the mileage marker, a great benefit from the Oregon Dept. of Transportation. She often thinks to tell you where the point happens where you pass from one terrane and/or formation to another. She posts actual color photos of interesting sites and points out what to look for in the picture. The books are printed on heavy-weight glossy paper that reproduces color photos very richly and with a lot of detail.

The famous strip maps of the Roadside Geology series are enhanced in her hands. The glossy paper, use of color, and modern printing techniques permit her and the publisher to put much detail into the maps. They are very rich. The material is referenced both by the labels and pointers as well as text descriptions of what is on the roads. As other authors have done, she sometimes refers to a small town that is not on the map, but not too often.

She has included coverage of some minor roads that were not described in the first edition. Two examples are Oregon Rte. 205 branching from US 26 near Portland to Tillamook and OR 205 in the southeast Oregon basin and range region near Steens Mountain.

She includes the big geological stories of Oregon: examples are subduction earthquakes, the clockwise rotation of the coast mountains around a center in southern Washington, the effect of the Missoula ice-age floods on the Columbia River region, and the Basin and Range faulting. Little tidbits are included, too: the folding of the Oregon coast with low center (near Newport, if I recall correctly) and the making of the weird Oxbow on the Snake River and many more.

I think even readers from other states and countries may find this book well worth reading because Oregon has such complexity and Miller has described it so well.

The Roadside Geology Series just keeps getting better and better!
By Theresa Holmes
I have been reading the Roadside Geology books (and Geology Underfoot) for at least 20 years, and have copies of all that have been published. I’ve studied the original version of RG Oregon numerous times, and have been waiting for at least the last decade for an updated edition. This has especially been the case since I read Roadside Geology of Idaho, by David Alt, which included his theory that the Columbia Plateau flood basalts and the succession of calderas forming the Snake River plain (of which the Yellowstone volcano is the latest) were both the result of an asteroid strike in southeastern Oregon about 17 million years ago. No mention of that was made in the original version of RG Oregon.

Unfortunately, no mention of that idea was made in this version either, at least not directly. That’s okay, because in all other ways, the 2nd Edition is well worth the money, as well as the time it takes to read it carefully.

Although the theory of an asteroid strike isn’t even mentioned, there is a set of drawings on page 215 that shows the distribution of the major units of the flood basalts, beginning with the Steens Mountain series in southeastern Oregon between 16.8 and 16.6 million years ago. This matches up beautifully with the location of the initial impact crater, especially since it is circular, more or less. It is followed by the Imnaha series, which began in the same area and flowed northeast into Idaho and around the Wallowa mountains to flow west. Above that lie the massive Grand Ronde series, which overlie the Imnaha series and cover the southeastern third of Washington. Not only that, they flowed west all the way to the Pacific and caused some interesting land forms and features there. Not once, but many times. At the same time, the less extensive Prineville and Picture Gorge series added to the volume of flood basalt in north central Oregon. As if that weren’t bad enough, the Wanapum series (also referred to as the Yakima basalts in the original versions of RG Oregon and Washington) flowed over much of the Grand Ronde basalts in Washington and northern Oregon, again all the way to the Pacific. Finally, as a kind of sputtering last gasp, the Saddle Mountains series covered areas of the Wanapum series in southeastern Washington and northern Oregon as well.

In all, we’re talking a total volume of around 52,800 cubic miles, covering an area of more than 77,220 square miles. Some single flows had volumes greater than 480 cubic miles. Clearly the Columbia Plateau Basalts are the North American equivalent of the Siberian Traps that may have contributed to the Permian-Triassic extinction (also known as The Great Dying), and the Deccan Traps in India that may have contributed to the Cretaceous Extinction (along with whatever hit Chixulub).

The other interesting fact mentioned in this edition that didn’t get mentioned in the first is the existence of McDermitt Caldera (pg. 234 map) as the oldest of the Yellowstone Hot Spot calderas. It is within the Steens Mountain area. For more on the theory, read Roadside Geology of Idaho.

Why am I so interested in the Columbia Plateau basalts? I grew up in Richland, Washington, and traveled around that part of Washington and Oregon. In some sense, my fascination with geology rises out of my childhood curiosity about what might cause flood basalts.

But there is much more to like about the 2nd Edition of RG Oregon, including all the color photos, the carefully drawn geological maps, the updated application of plate tectonics theory to how Oregon grew through the addition of terranes accreted from elsewhere as the North American Continent has expanded westward since the North Atlantic began to open back during the Triassic Period, and the fact that Oregon appears to have been rotated clockwise about 70 degrees since the first terranes were accreted probably beginning around 100 million years ago or more. Also of value is the discussion of the Missoula Floods during the last Ice Age. These caused the Channeled Scablands in Eastern Washington, left huge sandbars in places you’d never expect them up and down the Columbia River, and large rocks in the Willamette Valley that could only have come from Montana or Alberta Canada. You can read all about them in “Glacial Lake Missoula and Its Humongous Floods,” also by David Alt.

For anyone with an interest in the geology underlying the scenery you see out your car windows when you drive around this great nation of ours, I highly recommend the Roadside Geology series, as well as the Geology Underfoot series by Mountain Press. And I encourage the editors at Mountain Press to update more of their books, especially Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas (and any of the others that haven’t been upgraded to full color).

I can hardly wait till there’s a Roadside Geology book for every state in the union because reading them is almost as good as visiting those states for those as can’t, and greatly increases the enjoyment of visiting by providing an understanding of how the land forms beyond your car windows came to be the way they are.

Worthy and much needed successor
By abcd
For years I have been hoping for an updated Roadside Geology guide to Oregon. This book lives up to my expectations and is worth purchasing even if you already have the old version. That first edition, by Alt & Hyndman, is nearly 40 years old now. It was the very first Roadside book, I think, and they deserve plenty of credit for kicking off the genre. Since then, however, the science has advanced a lot, as has book printing technology, and so has the Roadside series. Alt and Hyndman went pretty easy and light on details, but experience has shown the publishers that people actually do want more. The recent guide to Massachusetts, for example, is much longer than the Oregon book, despite MA being a tiny state and less rich in geological wonders.

The new guide by Miller lives up to the current standard for the series. It probably has twice the word count of the A&H book (more pages, and less white space), covers several roads they left out (e.g., OR218 through the interesting Clarno/John Day region) lots of detailed, color geological maps using standard formation names, as well as helpful color photos, including a bunch of aerial shots that give context to what you'll see from the road. Reflects the state of the science today. In some areas that just means details have been fleshed out. The big story, though, is the understanding we now have of terrane accretion -- how much of Oregon was assembled over the last 200M years from chunks of land that plate tectonics brought in from faraway places.

A very minor gripe is that I wish Miller had given a nod to Alt and Hyndman somewhere, such as the acknowledgements section. True, her book not an 'update', she clearly wrote from a clean slate, but it still would have been gracious to do so.

Spider, by Patrick Mcgrath

Spider is gaunt, threadbare, unnerved by everything from his landlady to the smell of gas. He tells us his story in a storm of beautiful language that slowly reveals itself as a fiendishly layered construction of truth and illusion. With echoes of Beckett, Poe, and Paul Bowles, Spider is a tale of horror and madness, storytelling and skepticism, a novel whose dizzying style lays bare the deepest layers of subconscious terror.

Amazon.com Review
I cut into my potato, and dead in the middle of the halved potato there was a . . . thick, slow discharge I recognized as blood.

A wry, mesmerizing tale of madness in a London suffused with the smells of jellied eels, leaking gas, outdoor lavatories and furry feet. Spider obsesses about wetness and fire and sexuality, about "this business of the thought patterns" and "the dead eyes" of his father and a woman named Hilda. Somewhere inside Spider's internal web of illusions lurks the truth about his mother's death.

From Publishers Weekly
McGrath here pares away the campy, macabre elements of his previous works ( Blood and Water and Other Tales ; The Grotesque ) in favor of a closely observed study of madness, memory and storytelling . Dennis Clegg, affectionately nicknamed Spider by his mother, returns to his London neighborhood after 20 years in a mental hospital and begins a journal to "create some order in the jumble of memories"--that is, to unravel the murky circumstances surrounding his mother's murder. This crime, he contends, was committed by his father, but has been pinned on Spider. Through lucid, poetically charged reconstructions, we are introduced to an unhappy family triad: alcoholic father, passive mother and an only child who becomes increasingly delusional. In Spider's telling, the truth of things is elusive, but the stormy wonder of the prose--Spider describes himself as a "baggy, threadbare sort of a customer, really--my clothes have always seemed to flap about me like sailcloth, like sheets and shrouds . . . and they always look vacant, untenanted . . . as though I were nothing and the clothes were clinging merely to an idea of a man"--perfectly conveys the roiling vertigo of mental illness along with the clarity it often incites. Spider's unreliability as narrator deepens McGrath's portrait of an unfathomable reality and preserves the refinements of his philosophical skepticism. An admixture of Poe and the comic vulnerabilities of Beckett, this tale lingers long and disturbingly in the mind. (Oct.).

From Library Journal
Spider Cleg moves into a London boarding house near the squalid East End neighborhood where he lived 20 years earlier. Here memories of his mother's murder and other childhood traumas arouse his latent schizophrenia. Spider tells his own story in the form of a secret journal, and hallucination sometimes displaces reliable narrative. Since events of the past and present unfold simultaneously, the book skillfully maintains two levels of suspense. We wonder what happened to Spider as a child and what this past suffering will lead him to do. As in many stories by Poe, McGrath's portrayal of a diseased mind evokes disquiet but also voyeuristic fascination.

NEVER MIND HIS PARLOUR....
By Larry L. Looney
...take a step into Spider's mind -- and after you do that, you'd better pray that the door didn't slam shut behind you. You're definitely going to want a way out -- this is a pret-ty scary place.
Of the three novels and one book of short stories I've read by Patrick McGrath, this, I believe, is his masterpiece. As Spider narrates his story -- in an almost-torrential syntax that in itself reveals a lot about him -- the reader is inexorably drawn further and further into the mind of a man who is slipping away before our eyes. Spider is hanging on to the ledge of reality by his fingernails, while events conspire to take their turn trodding on his fingers. His thoughts and fears are as real to us as if they were our own. His world -- more-or-less present-day London -- seems as alien to us as a Martian landscape. Everyday people, events, objects and places leap out of the mist at him with frightening intensity -- we feel our breath and our pulse quicken repeatedly as he/we attempt to deal with the ever-more threatening reality of daily life in a halfway house, as images and ghosts from the past intermingle with pieces of the present, and it gets harder and harder to tell one from the other.
McGrath is, at the core, a master story-teller. His interest in the psychological most likely stems from his father's work at Broadmoor Hospital in England, where he grew up. All of his works share an eye for detail, and the care he takes in doing his homework is very apparent. This book is one of the most compelling, captivating and frightening portraits of madness I have ever read -- and it's thoroughly entertaining as well. It's staggering how much power McGrath has been able to cram into this slim volume -- without crowding out a fine story, told with a uniquely fractured clarity and in an unforgettable tone.
The reader is also encouraged to check out a couple of his other fine novels: ASYLUM and THE GROTESQUE. The former is one of the most unusual love stories I've ever run across, and the latter will surprise and reward you with its combination of suspense and wickedly funny humor.
I'll take Patrick McGrath, a true modern master of the Gothic style, over any of the mass-producing 'scary novel' writing machines (who are so in vogue) any day. The quality of his work will surely stand the test of time. I would suggest not reading any of these with the light off, but that would be difficult, would it not...

Trapped in a Spider web
By Alysson Oliveira
This is my third Patrick McGrath's novel and my favourite so far. I've read `Asylum' and `Dr. Haggard's Disease' . The first is a haunting and dark love story --quite different, and very touching--, the second is interesting, however I don't know what happened, but I couldn't click with the book. But `Spider' became my favourite, and it is unforgettable to me.
It is a story of man, named Dennis `Spider' Cleg, a man who lives in a kind of halfway house for the mentally ill in London. As he is both protagonist and narrator, we are never sure of what he is talking about. Maybe things happened the way he says, maybe he is alucinating. Who knows? He is a man with mental problems that is followed by the image of his father killing his mother and bringing a whore to substitute for her. And we learn all that happened from Spider's sick mind. Until the surprising end.
I highly recommend this novel to readers who like dark thrillers, with psycological undertones. The characters are very well developed. Spider is a human being as any other, we can easily understand what happened to this man that led him to be the way he is.

A sympathetic but depressing portrayal of schizophrenia
By C. ANZIULEWICZ
Back in college I decided to take a class in abnormal psychology as an elective. Patrick McGrath's novel "Spider" would've made good supplemental reading for that class. What we have here is the journal of one Dennis Clegg, a man in his early 30s who is living in a kind of halfway house for the mentally ill in London. Dennis, whom we learn is nicknamed "Spider," has returned to London after being institutionalized with acute schizophrenia for some 20 years. He has never truly recovered, however, and as this narrative progresses we vicariously experience his increasingly fragile grip on reality. What precipitated his illness seems to have been the death of his mother when he was 13 or so; yet the exact circumstances or her death are cloaked in Spider's own paranoid delusions and hallucinations.
In "Spider," Patrick McGrath has crafted an affecting yet tragic and depressing portrayal of madness. This is powerful, though not necessarily enjoyable, reading. Rumor has it that director David Cronenberg's next film is to be an adaptation of this novel; if he is successful in translating McGrath's novel to the screen, is should be quite a film.

Excellent resource for homeowners and other DIYers
By Jeff B
If you’re like me, you are thinking hard about trying to use sustainable energy sources, and solar energy is one of the best sustainable energy types around. Figuring out how to get your house on solar power is bewildering, though, and plenty of manufacturers and vendors out there would love to take advantage of all the confusion and complexity of buying and installing a solar energy system.

“The Truth About Solar Panels” helps shed some light on this confusing subject, and tells you what you need to look for and avoid when you are shopping and planning for your switch (or partial switch) to solar energy. Written by actual engineers, the book is a complete resource for learning about solar energy and how to cost-effectively add this power source to your home.

This book has a lot of useful information and is worth the four bucks. It is very poorly written, however. The writers seem to have English as a second language. They would benefit by spending $500 - $1000 to have a writer/editor step in and clean it up.

Thanks, GREAT PRODUCT
By radost32
The book is great since I got in a concise form the essential info about cheap and second-hand solar panels. Both internet and the real world swarm with books and guides about how to assemble a DIY solar electric system but it’s hard for me to find the pros and cons of such a decision packed together and supported by some smart calculations.
If you’re an avid DIY-er, this book will not provide you with info you don’t know. Instead it draws your mind and attention on issues you should constantly beware of. The book is an excellent guide not only for PV beginners simply because, judging from my own experience, it’s rather easy to forget some plain truths while hanging in PV forums on the web.

Benchere in Wonderland: A Novel, by Steven Gillis

What is the role of art in the world? And what is the responsibility of the artist? After the death of his wife, Michael Benchere, a well-respected sculptor and once-famous architect, looks for ways to redefine the meaning of his life through the purpose of his art. Determined to create a sculpture that celebrates nothing more than the pure beauty of art, Benchere heads into the Kalahari desert where he is followed quite unexpectedly by a ragtag mix of people. Over the course of his months in the desert, Benchere must address not only the relationship of his art to the world at large, but his own relationship to the world and how our responsibilities, our loves and dreams don’t ever fade in time but, in effect, become evermore defined.

Review
Praise for Benchere in Wonderland

THE RUMPUS BOOK CLUB PICK

Plaudits are due for Gillis's brilliant fifth novel, an ambitious treatise on the role of art and the artist in modern day society. The author has an uncanny knack for depicting the best and worst of humankind... Gillis's novel carefully examines the fallibility and resolve of the artist, the myriad repercussions that art can have, and the different ramifications of political art and art created merely for the sake of art—if there can be such a thing.
Publishers Weekly

Art and the role of the artist in society meet with African politics and exploitation in this meditation on action and consequences. With Benchere’s emotional sphere in a state of flux, it becomes clear that his artistic and political views give him stability; his hardheadedness on these issues help him hold on to his sanity… Gillis also sets up a conversation about art and the artist’s role (or lack thereof) in political conversations. Should art’s influence be removed from politics—can it be? Equal parts adventure, sociopolitical critique, love story, and emotional exploration, Benchere in Wonderland is a meditation on the fact that ‘all actions have consequences,’ whether immediately predictable or not.
GENEVIEVE SHIFKE ALI, Foreword, 5 Stars

Steven Gillis has created an indelible character in Benchere and let him loose in a slyly subversive wonderland of art, violence, love, grief, greed, and grand ideals. At once magnificently strange and achingly intimate, Gillis’ novel lingers and burns long after the covers are shut.
DAWN RAFFEL, Author of The Secret Life of Objects

Steven Gillis’s latest novel once again reminds us that he is not only a master storyteller able to conjure up narrative magic, but it’s his lyrical voice throughout the narrative that’s capable of finding the poetry in the most unlikely places that makes him the 21st century heir to Saul Bellow, John Cheever, and Stanley Elkin. When you mix Gillis’s sad, beaten lyricism with his continual explosions of narrative surprise, the result is a glorious, tense luminosity that makes Benchere in Wonderland his best book yet, a satisfying and deeply moving read.
RICHARD GRAYSON, Author of Winter in Brooklyn

Steven Gillis’s new novel Benchere in Wonderland is not quite like anything else I’ve ever read. Surprising, arresting, and electric, it kept me up a couple of nights in a row. This author has a voice all his own, and it’s one I won’t forget. Benchere in Wonderland is that rare thing—an original novel.
STEVE YARBROUGH, Author of The Realm of Last Chances

Steven Gillis’s latest novel, Benchere in Wonderland, takes readers into the Kalahari Desert and embroils them in the stormy clash of art and commerce, politics and aesthetics, ideas, ideals, and the chaos of the human heart. Anyone who has ever worried over the troubled relationship between art and the world will want to read this compelling novel.
ED FALCO, Author of The Family Corleone

Gillis keeps it tight, focusing on Benchere who is engagingly free of self-importance and hard not to love…Gillis also writes with economy and verve, a bit the way Benchere makes his art. This is a book with a message – and in a world where a Picasso can sell for 179 million dollars it’s a message worth thinking about – but one delivered with lightness and impeccable flair.
CATH MURPHY, LitReactor

Every now and then I get ahold of a book that makes the reading experience just a little bit more special…I loved the book. The core of Benchere in Wonderland is ideas and ideals, art and the man, and the human nature brew of shit happening, whether instigated or not, but sometimes it’s our actions that start the landslide.
LAURA J.W. RYAN Upstate Girl

This writer clearly knows how to tell a complex story, in a way no one can learn in a writing workshop….Benchere in Wonderland is a large book, a meaningful book, its story told by a masterful storyteller.
CONRAD GELLER, Lost Coast Review

Praise for The Law of Strings
This story collection hooked me from story one and continued to captivate to the end. Expert dialog and movement and resolution in each piece...This is a book you could read in a sitting or two. The pace is that swift; the stories are that good.
Stephen Dixon, two-time National Book Award finalist

Very few writers would dare explore, in a collection of stories, the intersections between quantum physics and everyday ethics, between cosmic law and domestic habit; fewer still could make those intersections so compelling and surreal and surprising, and could make the pages sing by so quickly; only Steven Gillis can provide just this bracing combination of thoughtfulness and spiked wit and deadpan finesse. The Law of Strings is a revelation—strange, barbed, and original.
Michael Griffith, author of the novels Trophy, Bibliophilia and Spikes

Praise for Walter Falls
An exceptionally well-written novel…Walter Falls is highly recommended as a powerful and moving saga of the human condition.
Midwest Book Review

Reads like a suspense thriller, causing one to talk out loud to the main character…
Altar Magazine

Praise for Temporary People
As thoroughly dark and thoroughly humane as Vonnegut's apocalyptic novels like Cat's Cradle and Galapagos, Temporary People is a suspenseful tale about history, hope, oppression, and modes of resistance. Gillis's world is richly imagined, his voice is clear, and his plot is intricate, as is his moral. In fact, this novel seems much more interested in probing and dramatizing the deep philosophical paradoxes of revolutionary thought than in providing any pat answer. Here's a fable for our time, and for just about any other time you can imagine.
Chris Bachelder, author of U.S.!

Minimalist-cum-fabulist Steven Gillis synthesizes nearly every Twentieth Century calamity from World War II to the Balkans to Desert Storm into this fable of the oppressed country Bamerita, which drifts about the seas unhinged from any continent. His idealistic and erudite hero finds his peaceful revolution thwarted and contemplates the holes in Gandhi s many aphorisms while his people are mutilated in grand spectacle on film. Temporary People is a vicious and compelling storyboard for our time.
Jeff Parker, author of Ovenman

Praise for The Consequence of Skating
Meticulous and provocative, Gillis’ tale is a sure-footed display of the heart’s ability to reclaim itself, one step at a time.
Jonathan Fullmer, Booklist

Steven Gillis possesses that rarest of gifts, the voice that seems to flow effortlessly. This guy makes it look easy. Read the first three pages of The Consequence of Skating, and if you're not hooked, go see a doctor.
Jonathan Evison, author of All About Lulu and West of Here

Praise for Giraffes
Gillis' stories are illuminatingly strange, filled with power, electric, and will stay with you long after you think you've gone to sleep.
Stephen Elliott, author of Happy Baby

Gillis' work is unflinchingly human, full of surprisingly familiar details. The uniqueness of his narrative lens is as undeniable as the quality of his writing.
Diane Goettel, Editor, Adirondack Review

In this uncommon collection of short stories, one of Steven Gillis' characters says: "Just not into normal, is that it?" Yeah, that's it exactly. Steven Gillis' strength and virtue as a writer is that he's just not into normal. Ellen Parker, Editor, FrGG

A Work of Art
By Kathleen Maher
Steven Gillis’ “Benchere in Wonderland” delighted me from beginning to end. I loved the exuberant, independent artist, Michael Benchere, and the half dozen characters (and a dog) that make up his family and friends. Also, I admired and enjoyed Gillis’ finesse in writing about art—and the meaning of art. He has a marvelously light touch. But perhaps ever rarer and more wonderful, I loved the way the characters’ different sensibilities toward art, philosophy, and politics were intrinsic to their personalities. Gillis shows that their awareness depends upon the individual’s sensitivity more than his or her education or culture. Conveying these traits in a way that’s playful yet sincere is an art in itself.

Through an almost seamless presentation of events and reflections going back and forth in time, the reader understands that Benchere’s need to install a massive sculpture in the Kalahari desert relates to mourning his recently deceased wife, Marti. Grieving for her, Benchere engages his faith in art (and Marti’s engineering) to proceed. He sustains his crew in Kalahari, which includes a pilot; volunteer workers; forklift operators; welders; diggers, and a young filmmaker, who’s documenting the project.

He professes that true art inspires a unique response in each individual. Art is separate from politics. But once the sculpture exists, not in the abstract but in Africa, it unavoidably becomes imbued with political significance. The artist is neither daunted nor surprised. He knew before experiencing this that art, once observed, has consequences.

When an emissary from South Sudan asks Benchere to make a sculpture for the people there, he deliberates and agrees. His presence in war-ravaged South Sudan sets off dire repercussions, from which he emerges with a greater capacity for love. “Benchere in Wonderland” is a wonderful, unique story, written in a vigorous, unique style.

Move Over, Alice
By Bernie Hafeli
If Benchere himself was asked to comment on Steven Gillis’s Benchere in Wonderland, I’m pretty sure he’d decline, preferring the novel to stand on its own and readers to draw their own conclusions. “Art for art’s sake” is Benchere’s position, at least early on in this compelling narrative, before he goes to the Kalahari Desert where his immense though highly personal sculpture takes on a life of its own.

What follows is a lively interplay involving art, politics, altruism, the social order, greed, grief, life, death, and ultimately love—in short everything it means to be human. One might be tempted to call this a novel of ideas if wasn’t so consistently entertaining.

Like Saul Bellow’s Henderson, Benchere becomes an iconic figure to native Africans. The unpredictable happens and keeps happening. And all the while Benchere’s every movement is monitored by an absurdist 21st century manifestation of Rose(ncrantz) and (Guilden)Stern, who blithely jabber away trying to ascertain his designs and motives.

And what are those designs and motives? Where does our protagonist ultimately come out after everything that happens?

Ahh, Benchere.

That would be telling. And Benchere would want readers to figure that out themselves.

Thought provoking and extremely entertaining read.
By Daniel E. Wickett
This is the fifth novel of Steve's that I've read and the seventh book overall. It's the best of his that I've read, which is saying quite a bit, especially after the last trio of Temporary People, The Consequence of Skating, and The Law of Strings.

Benchere in Wonderland seems to "simply" ask What is Art? and What is Art's role in the world? I think it goes beyond that though and pushes the reader to think about what it means to be human--what it means to think, to act, to love, to grieve, to admire.

The Benchere in question is Michael Benchere--world renowned architect, and sculpture. I don't want to spoil anything for any readers of this wonderful novel and will simply say that Benchere ends up deciding to build a huge sculpture in the Kalahari Desert in Africa and while he simply wants/hopes to do it for the sake of the sculpture, it turns into much more--a media event, a place for people to converge, to make their own comments about art and about politics and love and ...

And Gillis has infused this novel with plenty of humor and entertainment. It's a novel that will entertain you greatly while causing you to think.

Summer is a novel by Edith Wharton published in 1917 by Charles Scribner's Sons. The story is one of only two novels to be set in New England by Wharton, who was best known for her portrayals of upper-class New York society. The novel details the sexual awakening of its protagonist, Charity Royall, and her cruel treatment by the father of her child, and shares many plot similarities with Wharton's better-known novel, Ethan Frome. Only moderately well received when originally published, Summer has had a resurgence in critical popularity since the 1960s.
Eighteen-year–old Charity Royall is bored with life in the small town of North Dormer. She is a librarian and ward of North Dormer’s premier citizen, Lawyer Royall. While working at the library, Charity meets visiting architect Lucius Harney.

When Harney’s cousin, Miss Hatchard, with whom he is boarding, leaves the village, Harney becomes Mr. Royall’s boarder, and Charity his companion while he explores buildings for a book on colonial houses he is preparing. Mr. Royall, who once tried to force his way into Charity's bedroom after his wife's death, and later asked her to marry him, notices their growing closeness. He tries to put a stop to it by telling Harney he can no longer accommodate him in his house. Harney makes it appear as though he has left town, but only moves to a nearby village and continues to communicate with Charity.

On a trip to Nettleton, Harney kisses Charity for the first time and buys her a present of a brooch. Afterwards they run into a drunken Mr. Royall, who is accompanied by prostitutes. Mr. Royall verbally abuses Charity, causing her to become overwhelmed with shame. After the trip, Charity and Harney begin a sexual relationship.

At a ceremony during North Dormer’s Old Home Week, Charity sees Harney with Annabel Balch, a society girl whom she envies. Afterwards, Charity goes to the abandoned house where she and Harney usually meet. Mr. Royall unexpectedly shows up and, when Harney arrives, Mr. Royall asks him sarcastically if that is where he intends to live after he marries Charity. After an angry Mr. Royall leaves, Harney promises Charity that he is going to marry her, but that he has to go away for a while first. After Harney has left the town, Charity’s friend Ally lets slip that she saw him leave with Annabel Balch, to whom he is engaged to be married. Charity writes a letter to Harney telling him to do the right thing and marry Annabel.

Charity has been feeling unwell, so she goes to Dr. Merkle ("a plump woman with small bright eyes, an immense mass of black hair coming down low on her forehead, and unnaturally white and even teeth"), who confirms her suspicion that she is pregnant. After the examination Dr. Merkle charges five dollars, and Charity, not having enough money to cover it, has to leave the brooch Harney gave her. When she gets home she reads a letter from Harney that makes her realize that, despite his promises, he is unlikely to break his engagement to Miss Balch.

Charity decides she cannot stay at home and so makes her way to the mountain, intending to look for her mother. On the way she sees the minister, Mr. Miles, and her friend Liff Hyatt. They are on their way to the mountain because Charity’s mother is dying. When they arrive, Charity’s mother is already dead, and the three of them bury her.

Charity stays on the mountain overnight, where she sees the abject poverty and resolves not to raise her child there. She decides that she is going to be a prostitute, and with the money she earns she will hire someone to take care of her child. On the way home she meets Mr. Royall, who has come to pick her up. He offers to marry her.

Review
As a summer full of romance draws to a close, a young woman discovers the heartbreak that autumn ushers in. Lorna Raver s narration masterfully tells the story of the rebellious but genuine Charity Royall. Raver s reading is thoughtful, capturing the warm emotions of the heroine while keeping with the slower pace of Wharton s depiction of the setting. In SUMMER, Wharton diverges from her usual focus on the New York elite, instead setting the story in rural New England. Raver makes the inhabitants of the small town come alive by using the rural dialects in her vocal characterizations. Her attention to dialect and tone absorbs the elements of Wharton s novel that make it authentically American. --AudioFile

A book for all seasons
By A.J.
Edith Wharton did the impossible with "Summer" and wrote a love story I actually cared about. Not because her protagonists are likeable, but because their character flaws render them believable and intriguing and fill the reader with sensational expectations; they are not just mannequins waiting to be posed within the frame of a formulaic plot. A novel published in 1917 that depicts an abortionist withholding a piece of jewelry from a woman until she pays her fee is obviously not something that was shaped by the cookie cutter.

Wharton sets the story in an isolated village called North Dormer, evidently in the Berkshires of western Massachussetts. The heroine, a young woman named Charity Royall, is bored with her life there as the sole librarian of the village's shoddy, neglected library when one day she meets Lucius Harney, an urbane young architect who has come to North Dormer to visit a relative and to sketch colonial houses. Their initial friendship blossoms into a romance which is threatened by two factors: Charity's guardian, the local lawyer Mr. Royall, a stingy, miserable man who drinks too much, desires to marry her; and Charity, an orphan raised by Mr. Royall and his deceased wife, is embarrassed by her heritage as a child born among the shunned, destitute farmers who live up on the "Mountain," as it is called.

Wharton, the model of what good American prose looked like in the early twentieth century, is more importantly a thematic innovator who seeks to reflect female identity, in this case personified by a rustic girl who attempts to break the constraints of her native element by pursuing an improbable romance with a man whose sophistication allows him to take advantage of her simplicity, only to turn to another man whose position allows him to take advantage of the situation in which the first man placed her. One detects an echo of Wharton's own unhappy marriage in the story, and indeed the decision Charity makes at the end seems to spring from desperate resignation, the defeated sense of being trapped, rather than from true love. For Wharton, the way out was through the power and elegance of the written word, but Charity, oblivious to the wonder of the books she has so long tended but ignored, has no such option.

What a surprise! What an ending!
By LovesToReadBooks
[Note: do not read the spoiler review by "George & Georgia Eliot" on this site before you read the book (I'm glad I didn't) since the reviewer reveals the plot line even in the title of the review. Hey, thanks a lot. Don't you know you're supposed to put "spoiler alert" on things like that?] As for SUMMER itself, it was a delightful surprise from Wharton. One of the few books in which she actually admits that her characters have sex (oh, my) and actually does it tastefully and in strict accordance with the characters' natures and the plot itself. The ending was a stunning surprise, and this from a huge Wharton fan, who found this book accidentally for the Kindle. Thank you, those who made this book available for free, but I would've paid to read this one. SUMMER is one of the best books Wharton ever wrote. Thumbs up on character development, irony, plot, dialogue, etc. Great read. 5*

Brilliant Tale of First Love Won and Lost
By E. Rothstein
Written when Wharton's own marriage was failing, this tale of first love won and lost is a bittersweet, moving novel which melds Wharton's two worlds beautifully - high society, and rural New England. Her personal favorite of all the novels she wrote, Edith Wharton captures the very essence of love and longing in this beautiful, sensual story of Charity Royall and Lucius Harney. Born to a poor mother, Mr. Royall rescues Charity and raises her as his own daughter, but when his wife dies of consumption, and Charity begins to ripen into a lovely woman, Mr. Royal realizes that his feelings for her are deeper than he imagined. Repulsed by his offer of marriage, Charity instead turns her attentions to the handsome young architect from Boston, Mr. Lucius Harney, who is visiting North Dormer for the summer. As summer unfurls in North Dormer like the Red Rambler rose in Charity's garden, Charity and Lucius' love blossoms, burns hot, and spills over into sexual union. Wharton's language of love is extraordinary - beautiful, sensual, and filled with all the fire of first love. I won't ruin the ending for you by revealing it, but it is poignant, achingly human, and ultimately fitting that Charity ends up where she does. Bittersweet and gorgeously written, this is a magical book not to be missed.
