Mike Veseth is an economist specializing in global wine markets. He is editor of the award-winning blog The Wine Economist and author of a dozen books, including Wine Wars (2011), which examined three powerful forces shaping the world wine map (the curse of the Blue Nun, the miracle of Two Buck Chuck, and the revenge of the terroirists), and Extreme Wine (2013), which circles the globe in search of the best, worst, cheapest, most insanely expensive, and generally most outrageous wines.

Mike is professor emeritus of international political economy at the University of Puget Sound. Some interesting material, but too many narrow rants that never quite get to any point

There are two things you might expect from a popular wine book written by an economist. It could be an Armchair Economist style presentation of unexpected and entertaining insights from economics about wine; or is could be a description of the economics of the wine business to help drinkers get more value for their money. This book does a little bit of each, but not very well. Mostly it's a series of essays about various aspects of the wine business, combined with some personal advice about drinking wine and other non-distilled alcoholic beverages.

The main problem I had with this book is the author's wordy style, the written equivalent of a guy in love with the sound of his own voice. For example, he tells us the relation of money, taste and wine is complicated. Then he tells us again. He must have 87 ways to say it, each wordier than the last. He even feels compelled to explain what "it's complicated" means: "'It's complicated' is the short description of a type of relationship that seems to defy short descriptions. You can't reduce it to one quick word or phrase." (Minor gripe that bothers only a few logicians like me, but he contradicts himself twice in that definition). In fact, wine is no more complicated than any other international business selling an experience good, and probably less complicated than music, art or fashion. Anyway, rather than saying over and over that it's complicated, the pages could be put to better use teasing out some threads to begin to understand the complexity, or some simple approximate models to appreciate some aspects of it.

My next problem is more of a disagreement than a criticism. From the outset, the author frames the problem of the relation of quality to price, although he frequently (far too frequently) points out that quality is not well-defined, and depends on personality, context and other subjective considerations. I don't think this is the issue facing most wine drinkers. You can select wines based on recommendations of wine store clerks, sommeliers, friends, ratings and popular articles; and do pretty well with little effort. Or you can devote energy to learning about wine, educating your palate, seeking out fellow enthusiasts and locating good supplies. Is the time, money and energy spent on the latter activities worth it in terms of enjoyment? Or should you instead devote the attention to music, art, football, economics, sex or anything else? The issue is not how a complete wine novice can get $50 a bottle quality for $10, but what are the costs and rewards of various levels of dedication to wine?

An annoying minor issue is the author is careless with numbers, an unexpected fault in an economist. For example, "Each barrel costs $1,000 or more and holds just 30 gallons (25 cases or 300 bottles) of wine, so the cost for the oak alone adds about $3.33." The author is confusing the actual capacity of wine oak barrels, typically 225 to 300 liters, with the English wine measure called a barrel, which is 119 liters. The latter is about 30 gallons (31.44 US gallons) but it's only 119 liter wine bottles or 159 750 ml bottles. Moreover, the $1,000 is a retail price for the most expensive barrels, a vineyard would get them much more cheaply and, more important, could sell them afterwards or reuse them. My guess is that it's hard to find a bottle of wine for which the oak represents more than $1 of the production cost.

If you have decided to get more serious about wine, the author has some interesting and unconventional advice for you, supported both by his knowledge of economics and his research into the wine business. This is clearly the most valuable part of the book, and for some readers it will make it worth wading through the verbiage and skewed framing. There are some common suggestions, like photographing labels of wine you taste and researching it on the Internet, keeping track of tastings and reactions, and so on. But he also has entertaining original sections on how to take advantage of dumping, why a big box store might be a better place to search for bargains than vineyards, and advocating branching out to beer and cider (personally, I would throw in sakes, non-grape wines and liqueurs as well).

Unfortunately, this portion of the book is narrow. It seems to assume an upper middle class suburban American, shopping for wine in supermarkets and chain stores, whose interest is in snagging unusual and high-quality wines at low prices for sport. I have nothing against such people, and this may be the only book that addresses their hobby. But I suspect there are more people like me, whose wine experiences are shaped by foreign travel, knowledgeable advisers in urban wine stores, restaurants, trips to vineyards and visits to the homes of friends who know about wines and other drinks from different regions of the world. Wine is only a small (but important) part of these experiences. I have no doubt I could find theoretically better value for the money than the favorite wines I have chosen over the years, but stripped of any history, I wouldn't enjoy them anywhere near so much. And when I try a new wine, I want it to have more context than elbowing two other Costco shoppers out of the way to grab the last bottle in the bin (satisfying as that would no doubt be, especially if they both looked like effete wine snobs).

The author knows a lot about wine and economics, and is an original thinker in both fields. There is some solid material in this book but except for a narrow group of enthusiasts it doesn't coalesce into enough interesting or useful knowledge to repay the reader for the prolix style.

Mike Veseth combines enology and economics in the same space. He points out the conundrums we all face walking down the wine aisle or reading down a restaurant wine list. It is complicated but this book does help you learn a bit more about yourself and why you like what you like. It also could save you buckets of money on your next trip to the wine shop.
What makes a " Goats do Rome" different from a "Cote du Rhone", Mike will walk you through it. His approachable style is much less textbook and more relaxed. A perfect read going into the Christmas wine gifting season.

What we have taken from nature

If you are interested in who we are and what we have been doing for millennia, read this book. The subtitle, "what we have taken from nature" sets a tone of these remarkable 300 pages. Smil has his doubts about us. Who wouldn't?
In some pages I find the tone of Scientism, the substitution of scientific jargons for what could be said more simply. Why be restricted to his prefixes when quantities could be spelled out even stated several ways for instance T remains mysterious to me until I look up that it stands for 1012, a million million or terra. Has Smil done this on purpose to jar us into a fresh look? Like a hard hat on a construction site is his language stilted for good reason?
What keeps me reading Smil after finishing most of his 30 books is the freshness of his observations, how surprising he is. An author with an identifiable agenda becomes tiresome, not Smil. Every topic, as "did early man kill off big game", draws an original stream of references, quantities and questions. How can he refer to so many books and journals without ever seeming bookish? Facts and statistics reported by this omniscient guide blend into an unfinished song or poem not a library shelf.
The wonder is in Smil's original look at things. Can't he ever learn "to play ball" he must infuriate colleagues. Imagine him comparing how the satellites see his home town, Winnipeg to what he knows better. And can he really suggest that now and then man gives to Nature? Wasn't his theme just the opposite?
This extensive study of man becoming the dominate, horrifying force throughout the planet, plowing up North America, Brazil, China and everywhere else, straining the vast oceans through our fishing nets, is alarming. We can stop and consider, before we sink into despair, that along with many degradations we have also produced a Smil.

a. about 40% of all of terrestrial phytomass - trees, brush, grass - has been removed. To me, this paints of picture of a world heading toward unprecedented desertification. Even at this figure, the world is rapidly clearing and burning the tropical rainforests;

b. the ocean's zoomass or animal matter is perhaps that most vulnerable area in next few decades, according to the author. This is well described in the final chapter;

c. biomass harvests for biofuel, using so-called crop waste, imperils the health and water-absorbing capability of soils. Biomass fuel is not a good answer at large scales.

d. land and ocean mammals are at 10% of historic levels, for many species. More ocean and land disruptions will imperil the final 10% of remarkable fellow mammals.

Harvesting the biosphere, crowding out the diversity of life, and the road to global desertification. Can it be turned around? Prof. Smil offers impartial and practical advice in the last chapter. This book complements the author's other excellent books. Hopefully the summary and concluding chapter of this book will be shared among many educated people in the world.

The Gates Foundation is listening to Prof. Smil. Also, Bill Gates is personally a fan of Smil's books. How many other major foundations and think tanks are paying attention?

On a final note, this book makes it clear that human civilization's strategy of natural resource exploitation combined with indefinite population growth is a culture that is thousands of years old and unfortunately one that is archaic, worn-out, and now obsolete. Periodic surges and collapses of society's have occurred, and now Jared Diamond observes that a near global collapse may be a few decades away. The world needs a new vision of humanity living in symbiosis with the natural world, improving some areas and utilizing specific designated areas, instead of the other way around where protected areas are the exception rather than the rule. Understanding the need for a civilization-biosphere symbiosis is just the beginning of an effort by scientists to formulate and promote such a new civilizational strategy.

Fascinating content, but poorly written

The subject of what danger the human race has created for itself, simply by feeding itself, could not be more timely or important. Instead of preaching to us, this fantastic book gives us the bare facts and lets us make our own conclusions. And for those with the patience to dig out the big picture from the tedious writing style, the payoff couldn't be bigger. If only this guy had a good editor or a writing partner to make it readable to the casual reader. Anyway, if you are at all interested in the topic of what has happened to the plant life on earth since recorded history and what is left to sustain us today, dig in. Here are a few "gotcha" facts from the book.
1. It takes five times as much land to grow the veggies we feed to the cattle and pigs we eat, as the land used to grow veggies for humans to eat. By weight, the veggies fed to slaughtered animal weighs three times the veggies fed to humans. Let that sink in a minute. We would have 5 times as much farmland available to feed a larger population if we were vegetarian.
2. Speaking of population, by 2050, there will be 2 billion more people, almost all of them in Africa. Food wars, anyone? Don't forget about China's per person income which has recently quadrupled, creating massive demand for more meat. See #1. Also, the Chinese taste for exotic foods and "medicine" made from endangered animals are the two most likely causes of mass extinctions. ]
3. We have about 40% fewer plants than at biblical times. We have 20% fewer forests.
4. The collective weight of all domestic animals destined to be our meat is 25 times the weight of all wild animal on earth.

The book is really not about meat, that was just the most jarring conclusion for me personally. The information on farming, forestry, land use is the main focus and what an eye-opener it is. Just be prepared to skip over the ever-repeating disclaimers about inaccuracy in measurements and the constant conversions of units of measurement.

Thinking about beekeeping

This is a very good read for those that are looking at starting beekeeping or are very new to beekeeping. If you are on the fence, this book will definitely help you make the decision if you should or should not become a beekeeper. Having been a long term beekeeper I can add one thing the author forgets to tell you: You will get stung by a bee here and there!

Each section contains a narrative essay and historical time line of key events. The individual snapshot entries both show and describe the characteristics of individual organisms (such as Dunkleosteus, a four-ton, vampire-fanged fish) and how they are ancestors of or relatives to modern species. Each entry is a two-page spread, filled with color illustrations and photographs--more than 1,000 illustrations in all. There is also coverage of noted scientists as well as important places worldwide. In addition, numerous sidebars further elucidate topics of particular interest. The coverage here is exhaustive, but the writing is easy to follow, and the short-entry format makes for a very readable book. This is an important work and is

Steve Parker gained a BSc Honors First Class in Zoology and is a Senior Scientific Fellow of the Zoological Society of London. Foreword

In 1860, a debate took place in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The hall where this debate took place still exists, although it's now divided by a mezzanine floor into an upper "Huxley Room," and a lower "Wilberforce Room." The names of the rooms enshrine the main protagonists of that debate.

The debate followed a lecture by an American academic on the subject of evolution, and soon burgeoned into a full-blown confrontation between science and religion. The Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, laid into the new theory of evolution through natural selection, expressing his doubts that species could change over time. Among the scientists in the room was Thomas Henry Huxley, who would become known as "Darwin's Bulldog." Wilberforce went on to challenge Huxley: on which side of his family did he claim descent from a monkey -- on his grandmother's side or his grandfather's?

There are different accounts of precisely how Huxley responded to Wilberforce's sarcastic enquiry. Here's Huxley's own recollection of his reply:

"If then, said I, the question is put to me would I rather have a miserable ape for a grandfather or a man highly endowed by nature and possessed of great means of influence and yet who employs these faculties and that influence for the mere purpose of introducing ridicule into a grave scientific discussion, I unhesitatingly affirm my preference for the ape."

One commentator remembered perhaps what Huxley wished he'd said -- muttering first "The Lord hath delivered him into my hands," before delivering this decisive blow: "I would rather be the offspring of two apes than be a man and afraid to face the truth."

Whatever was actually said, Huxley's contribution to the debate has become legendary. I think that this is partly down to one of the enduring anxieties that evolution seems to provoke. We humans have always been keen to place ourselves on a pedestal, to emphasize the gulf between us and the rest of life on the planet. The concept of humans as a special creation, made by an intelligent designer, stands in direct opposition to the idea that we are a product of unthinking natural selection: that we have evolved, like every other species on the planet. The acceptance of the fact of evolution involves the acknowledgement that humans are animals. Huxley's open recognition of his humble pedigree showed that he was willing to accept this scientific truth -- even if it meant that he had to knock himself, and the rest of humanity, off a pedestal.

While humans are undoubtedly unusual animals, and unusual apes, it really is impossible to adhere to the idea of special creation if you look at the evidence around you. Our bodies and our genes are uncannily like those of other mammals, especially primates. And we now have a great fossil record of the ancestors of humans.

Five weeks before the famous debate in Oxford, Wilberforce had written a fairly damning review of Darwin's On the Origin of Species. He wrote about the lack of any fossil evidence to show one species gradually changing into another. To some extent, he was right. The fossil record in the mid-nineteenth century was patchy at best. Of course, there are still gaps -- it is, after all, very rare for a dead organism to become fossilized. But a huge wealth of fossil evidence has come to light since Darwin's time. For example, we now have good evidence of the transition from aquatic to terrestrial existence in early amphibians; of the ancestral whales who would eventually lose their hind legs entirely; of feathered dinosaurs who were ancestral to birds; and of hominins -- a whole family of apes who walked upright on two legs, including Homo sapiens.

These hominin fossils also show that human-ness didn't just suddenly appear. Features that we consider to be definitively, even uniquely, human, arrived in a piecemeal fashion, over vast expanses of time. And actually, it's only with hindsight that we can say that these features accumulated to a point where we can say "this is a human."

In fact, you can take any species you want and trace its evolutionary history in a similar way. And you find the same thing: a piecemeal accumulation of features until we end up with a species we're familiar with today. Tracing evolutionary histories like this also takes us back to common ancestors with other species, and indeed with whole groups of species, until we can reconstruct the huge, branching tree of life on the planet. Evolution, then, explains not just the appearance of individual species, including our own, but the entire diversity of life on Earth.

Evolution proceeds gradually, both in terms of genetic changes, and in the outward appearance of animals. But -- admittedly only with the benefit of hindsight -- it is possible to identify key points in evolutionary history which had huge implications for the way organisms continued to evolve. Such key moments include the appearance of the first eukaryotic cells, paving the way for the evolution of complex organisms; the evolution of animals which can survive out of water; and the appearance of flowering plants, together with the insects which evolved to pollinate them. In these pages, you can focus in on the characteristics of individual plants and animals -- but you can also pull back, to look at the wider picture, to place those species in context. There's a useful timeline guide to key events popping up just when you need it.

A superbly written, beautifully illustrated overview of the history of life on Earth

As someone who did his graduate work in molecular biology and genetics, it still amazes me that more than a century and a half after Charles Darwin published his epochal Origin of Species, the foundation stone of scientific biology known as Evolution remains controversial in some quarters. Misinformation and sheer nonsense about what Darwin actually wrote in his great study of natural history is still routinely repeated so books like Evolution: The Whole Story have never been more timely or necessary. Evolution is a scientific fact as much as gravitation and electromagnetism are. Unfortunately, Evolution has profound religious implications, as Darwin well knew (he hesitated publishing his theory for many years, anticipating the resulting firestorm of controversy).

What distinguishes this absolutely superb overview of Evolution, the nature of the fossil record and the adaptive radiation of species through deep time, is the encyclopedic discussion in the text, which is carefully and skillfully coupled with beautiful and instructive illustrations. The text is extremely well-written and a model of clarity. The authors select each representative species for discussion based on evidence in the fossil record. Fossils, which are either free-standing or on site, are illustrated with photographs or drawings. The illustrations are beautifully executed and serve to create visual evidence for Evolution which helps to clarify and validate the text.

Every significant species that is important in an evolutionary sense is given a two page spread. The progression of species are organized chronologically by group, starting from the very earliest and barest hints of life, to plants, invertebrates, fish and amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Cladograms are especially important for illustrating relationships between each of the animal groups and their members and several are included in this book. Their function is to help crystallize the data contained in the fossil record and confirm its evolutionary significance. Geological charts and photographs serve to combine biology with geology in illustrating the powerful effect that the tectonic motion of the continents has had on the evolution of species over geological time periods. There are multiple timelines that plot evolutionary events as well as the most important relevant scientific discoveries.

There are more than 1000 images in all and they make this book a feast for the eyes. One criticism that others have mentioned is the relatively small sized type font used. I did not find the book difficult to read (and my vision is quite bad) but the type could have been larger. Of course, larger type would come at the significant expense of sacrificing reader comfort and ease of manipulation, The book is already textbook sized and slightly on the heavy side. I think that given the book's large amount of text, the editors did not want to extend its already hefty 600 pages, a decision I agree with. This is one of the finest discussions of Evolution for a lay audience I've ever come across. I wish I had such a superb discussion of the history of life on Earth available when I was studying biology years ago. If you're interested in this fascinating subject, Evolution: The Whole Story will serve to enlighten you as well as whet your appetite to learn even more. Most highly recommended.

Every home should have this beautifully illustrated and enlightening book of essential knowledge

Now that I'm retired, I've returned to my first love which is studying science. This book is an immense asset in that endeavor. Remembering the names of geological time periods, and the flora and fauna that lived during them has been challenging. Now I have visual images to help me order the information I am taking in through other sources. Not to mention the fact that this book in itself presents enough information to satisfy me for many months of study. And to remain a valued reference for years to come.

The quality in EVERY respect is absolutely the best. The photographs and drawings are excellent, the layout is logical and easy to follow, the text is always relevant and illuminating. There is sufficient information about the scientists who made the discoveries, the controversies that existed during their time, and the resolution of theoretical conflicts to give the student a feel for the progress of knowledge without overburdening the narrative. There are recurring themes that help hold together the stories. There is so much factual information about the stunning numbers of life forms and so many awe-inspiring photographs and drawings of the life forms themselves that my understanding of evolution is greatly enhanced.

I think this would be a great book to get for any student of evolution. In fact, it would make an excellent reference book for a family to keep beside the dictionary. As to the size of the text, it presented no problem for me. I am 67 years old, with all the vision impairments that come with age. I found that the relatively small type font did not require any increase in my reading glass prescription. For my own purposes, the slightly more compact book that resulted is much preferable to a "coffee table book" which would have been unnecessarily large. This way, I am able to use "Evolution: The Whole Story" as a supplemental text and visual aid as I read from other, denser, text-heavy works.

I highly recommend this excellent volume to all individuals and families. It should become a much loved reference book in many homes!

THIS is value-for-money!

Whether you define value as a huge tome for your buck (It's close to 600 pages; weighs in at about 3 pounds; has over 1,000 full-color, breathtaking, illustrations; and Cladograms (you don't know from "Cladograms?" Don't worry, trust me, it's got 'em);

OR

If you're one of those nerds (like me) who defines value as giving you more information; more entertainment; more (and clearer) sheer knowledge about a subject than you thought possible to cram into one book;

This book gives VALUE

A fellow reviewer complained (and, admittedly, not without some merit) about the size of the type in the main narrative.

All I can say is, if the type were any larger, you couldn't carry the book; besides, if you only read the captions for the illustrations, you'll know more about evolution that 90% of the population.

Read the book; don't wait for the movie... even if they do it as an Amazon mini-series.

About the Author

Hiroko Fujita is a traditional ohanashi obaasan (storytelling grandma). She spent her childhood in the rural mountain town of Miharu in Fukushima Prefecture, where she heard hundreds of ancient folktales from village elders. A graduate of Japan Women's University who was an early childhood education for five decades, she now travels Japan, teaching young mothers the old tales. The author of thirty-one books in Japanese, she lives in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Fran Stallings, a professional storyteller based in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, interpreted for Mrs. Fujita's twelve storytelling tours of twenty-two American states, Japan and Singapore. Stallings edited and adapted English translations of Mrs. Fujita's storytelling handbook Stories to Play With (August House, 1999) and a collection of forty-seven tales known throughout Japan, Folktales from the Japanese Countryside (Libraries Unlimited, 2008). Stallings' other publications include articles, stories, songs, and four CDs. Her academic training in biology informs her environmental work as “EarthTeller.”

In 2003, Fujita and Stallings received the National (U.S.) Storytelling Network's International StoryBridge ORACLE Award for their work on both sides of the Pacific. They hope that these books will make Mrs. Fujita's stories available to English-speaking story lovers everywhere.

Translator Makiko Ishibashi attended the University of Tokyo. She lived in St. Louis while her husband did postdoctoral work and their two sons attended American schools. Now their sons are grown, and she lives in Saitama, Japan, with her husband. Her current interest is in the ukiyoe (woodblock prints) of Hiroshige, and Edo (the old name for Tokyo). She blogs bilingually at “A Hundred Views Of Edo”

Asian Folktales You Won't Find Elsewhere

if you are looking for rare folktales, here is a book of tales collected by Ms. Fujita in the Japanese countryside. This PG-rated collection includes tales of marriage and family life, rural scenes and activities, and much more. Great for libraries, too, these stories were collected and edited by storytellers.

Hidden gem

A collection of previously unpublished traditional Japanese stories, shared with Fran Stallings by her old friend and storyteller Fujita Hiroko. The two friends have told many stories together, live, during their working collaboration, and this collection brings out their shared enjoyment and love of stories. One for your collection if you enjoy traditional tales, or would like to explore them. The gentle humour and soft words carry concepts worth their weight in gold.

dazzle with enchantment, full of insight

Out of the ordinary and the commonplace these stories dazzle with magic and transport us to exotic lands and ancient times. Insight into Japanese culture and sagacity is rare and wonderful to read. Savor each story one at a time like a sweet treat. Or read the book cover to cover in one sitting like some great feast for the heart and mind. We hear the characters in ‘The Contest of Silence’ eating the manju cake - amu, amu, amu and like them we want more of these cakes - stories. The horse went pakkora, pakkora as it clopped along in Horse Dengaku and we can hear the hoofs clicking on the roadside and are immediately caught up in their path. We learn of the Kitsune or Fox trickster who may fool people but it may be for their own good. The title story alone with its age-old wisdom is worth the price of the book!

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, a scientist, a decorated professor, and an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. A SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, she lives in Fabius, NY.

I can't recommend this book more highly

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

the BEST gift to give yourself!!

This new book by Robin Kimmerer describes our relationships to the nural world and our responsibilities to the other members of Creation. should be required reading for every secondary school student. this beautiful book illustrates a good way to walk in partnership with the plants, animals, and elements.

a breath of sweet grass

Beautifully written, as evocative as a deep drought from a forest stream. Kimmer braids together the wisdom learned directly from trees with that learned from the books printed on them. Reading this book is like coming home to where we've always been--nestled in the heart of the Earth that cherishes us, even when we forget that.

I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Principles of Virology is an extremely valuable and highly informative textbook that describes virology at the interface of modern cell biology. Instead of teaching virus groups individually, the authors elegantly compile the molecular and cell biological aspects that orchestrate virus replication in general and how infections with these pathogens cause cell damage and diseases. About the Author
Jane Flint is a Professor of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. Dr. Flint's research focuses on investigation of the molecular mechanisms by which gene products of adenoviruses modulate host cell pathways and anti-viral defenses to allow efficient reproduction in normal human cells.

Vincent Racaniello is Higgins Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Racaniello has been studying viruses for over 35 years, including poliovirus, rhinovirus, enteroviruses, and hepatitis C virus. Dr. Racaniello blogs about viruses at virology.ws and is host of the popular science program This Week in Virology.
