An Amazon Best Book of August 2015: Susan Casey’s Voices in the Ocean opens with a near perfect set piece about a swim she once took in Maui. Her father had died two years prior, and she was still struggling with her feelings over the loss. Casey wades out at dusk for a solo ocean swim. The weather is bad and sharks have recently been seen in the area—but, Casey writes, “a strange thing happens when your worst nightmare is realized: nothing much is left to scare you.” Rather than something bad happening to her, she suddenly finds herself, mid-swim, surrounded by spinner dolphins. It is one of those rare moments of real awe, and the experience launches her book and, more importantly, her fascination with dolphins, which leads Casey on a globe-trotting trek around the world to study dolphins, porpoises, and whales. She begins by contacting a woman named Ocean, a New Age believer in the power of the dolphin; in Casey’s words, Ocean entertains “Star Trekian views about dolphins acting as teachers and visionaries and emissaries from other dimensions.” From there Casey expands her research to cover pioneering dolphin studies, human-dolphin encounters, dolphin and whale hunting (which still happens), and the cultural significance of dolphins going back centuries. Eye Opening and Disturbing

The title of this book is a little misleading. The author does indeed go swimming with wild dolphins in the book, but the book is more about the atrocities people commit against them. There are sections of the book dealing with the intelligence, social aspects, and communication of dolphins. For most of the book though the author is tracing various abuses, from early research to Japans' dolphin slaughter, to the Solomon Islands dolphin slaughter, to dolphin captures, and captive animals. I admire the authors' willingness to travel to these places and report on these things first hand, she is providing a valuable service in doing so.

I had a hard time reading this book, growing up I enjoyed watching Flipper, and visiting Seaworld as a child. Realizing I was aiding in the abuses discussed in the book really struck home. I would strongly recommend reading this book if you are an animal lover, or would like to learn more about the human impact on dolphins.

A writer shares her sense of personal connection to dolphins

I am a bit of an amateur naturalist, as well as a life long student of the biological sciences, and I requested this book thinking it was a scientific discussion of dolphins and their relationship to humankind. While there is a fair bit of science presented, most of it is not particularly new; the focus here is not so much on the science of dolphins, or their relationship to humans, but rather the author's personal journey, discovering how dolphins are treated and mistreated, her personal reactions to these stories, and her experiences swimming with dolphins. When Casey does touch on the science she tends to get it wrong; she makes much of the fact that humans and dolphins share in common a type of neuron calls a spindle neuron, though she refers to them by a much less common name, von Economo neurons. She cites this commonality as evidence of the intelligence of dolphins, probably as she is unaware that they're also found in many whales and in elephants. Spindle neurons are not, by themselves, a sign of high intelligence, but rather an evolutionary adaptation to large brains.

If you enjoy books detailing personal stories of growth and spiritual connections with animals and nature, this may be a good book for you. The reader looking for science and new discoveries about our cetacean relatives would be well advised to look elsewhere.

Worthwhile, but if you only read one book about the ocean, whales and dolphins, there are other books that are better written.

I really enjoyed Casey's previous two books "The Devils Teeth" and "The Wave" and would offer a 4-star or 5-star review of these two books. For me, this book felt like several independent stories that never flowed into a book and overall, the writing felt disjointed - the author wrote about what she found to be most interesting or experienced herself. The stories in this book about dolphin killing and captivity really need to be told and sections were interesting. However, the author's presence over-dominated sections of the book and took away from the characters and animals she encountered. If you have the time and energy to read only one book about whales and the ocean, this is not the book I would recommend.

For those who found this book interesting, I suggest reading "War of the Whales" where the personalities of the scientists and lawyers trying to save the whales really shone through in their amazing efforts and sacrifices to defend our oceans against the US navies careless use of sonar. I also learned more about whales/dolphins in "War of the Whales" compared to the Casey book. Other books that are really excellent about the ocean and high profile ocean animals are Carl Safina's "Song for the Blue Ocean" (first choice recommendation), "Eye of the Albatross" and "Voyage of the Turtle" (to read if you enjoyed Song of the Blue Ocean).

Any book that gets people to care more our oceans and the animals that live in them is very worthwhile.

About the Author
José Ingenieros (1877, Palermo (Italia)-1925, Buenos Aires) Su nombre original era Giuseppe Ingegneri. Fue médico, psiquiatra, psicólogo, farmacéutico, escritor, docente, filósofo y sociólogo. En 1892, tras terminar sus estudios secundarios, fundó el periódico La Reforma. Hacia 1893, estudió en la Facultad de Medicina de Buenos Aires, de la que se graduó en 1897 de farmacéutico y en 1900 de médico. Ingenieros fue un miembro relevante de la Cátedra de Neurología y del Servicio de Observación de Alienados de la Policía de la Capital, el cual llegó a dirigir. Entre 1902-1913 dirigió los archivos de Psiquiatría y Criminología y se hizo cargo del Instituto de Criminología de la Penitenciaría Nacional de Buenos Aires, alternando su trabajo con conferencias en universidades europeas. En 1908 ocupó la Cátedra de Psicología Experimental en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Ese año fundó la Sociedad de Psicología. Ingenieros terminó sus estudios en las universidades de París, Ginebra, Lausana y Heidelberg. Sus ensayos sociológicos El hombre mediocre y ensayos críticos y políticos, Hacia una moral sin dogmas, Las fuerzas morales tuvieron un gran influencia en el ámbito universitario de Argentina. En 1914 José Ingenieros se casó con Eva Rutenberg en Lausana, Suiza. Tuvieron cuatro hijos, Delia, Amalia, Julio y Cecilia. Hacia 1919 renunció a todos los cargos docentes y comenzó hacia 1920 su etapa política, participando de manera activa en favor del grupo Claridad, de tendencia comunista. Unos años después propuso la formación de la Unión Latinoamericana, una organización que difundió sus ideas antiimperialistas. A must for every adolescent and adult to read!

I have read El Hombre Mediocre by Jose Ingenieros when I was 13 years old and it has changed by life to a most excellent life. Of all the books I have read, I believe that El Hombre Mediocre, The Road Less Traveled, and The Art of Loving, and others like it should be read by every adolescent and young adult before they embarke on their journey through life. They are great guidelines and helpful in excellent decision making throughout life. Has there been a translation of El Hombre Mediocre to English and of The Road Less Traveled and the Art of Loving to Spanish and other languages? I would like to recommend the book to persons speaking other languages also.

Fantastic!

Excellent book! Jose Ingenieros teaches us about life, people and society. He vews our world through a different and interesting way. The qualities of man are enphasised when he talks about mediocare man. A great lesson for those who have the opportunity to read this book.

Not an easy read..a lot of advanced spanish words...

I am panamanian , and Spanish is my native language, nevertheless the reading of this book has not been easy for me ..As Jose Ingenieros uses lots of semantic variations of Spanish and some archaic language , I had to read it with a dictionary on my left hand to finish it. Jose describes his ideas about what is virtue , and why humankind has been driven towards mediocre behaviors and attitudes. He examines from the perspective of the beginning of the 20th century at Argentina, the last part of the books describes many Argentines geniuses ..Ameghino description of his lifework was my favorite.

People who live with a definite chief aim and try their best to attain it are not mediocre , while people who only wonder around life are mediocre what a simple definition....

Excellent study companion with step-by-step lessons and practices

I like the For Dummies book series in general since they are written in a non-intimidating way to provide instructional guidance for readers new to the subjects covered. The publisher is apparently now expanding into the textbook arena with the new "U Can" series. With this in mind, I ordered this book for my son who is taking Physics I at school this year, hoping that it would provide instructional guidance for him in a more friendly approach.

My son actually found this book to be extremely useful. It helps him review and reinforce the understanding of key concepts in step-by-step lessons augmented by clear examples and drill practices. The book is organized into bite-sized, key concepts that are easy to digest and absorb. Each concept is explained and illustrated in details, with tips and important notes to remember. This is immediately followed by example questions & answers to clarify the concept, and then by practice questions & answers to drill on.

Overall, this is a great resource for students who may need assistance with their Physics I. The course topics are broken into individual lessons with clear content review, along with step-by-step examples and practice problems to help the students understand and retain each concept. It is a textbook written in non-textbook style that is non-intimidating and easy to study with.

WOW! If only everything were taught like this

I loved Physics in High School. If you don’t use it, you lose it. The book is a reminder of how much I’ve forgotten the details or formulas even though I’ve used virtually all the various concepts of Physics as an adult.

The book defines the terms as you begin each chapter. It talks you through the concept and then explains how the formula is derived at. Practical tests to see if you understand what you’ve just read are followed by how the correct answer was arrived at. I wonder why this approach isn’t used in more public schools.

The title suggests the poster-paint colors with which Dunne portrays America in the last quarter-century. Let red stand for Leah Kaye, radical feminist lawyer; white, for Benedictine Father "Bro" Broderick, trendy celebrity priest; and blue, for long-suffering ex-husband and brother, Jack Broderick, "a successful failure" as a writer. The pilgrimages of the former two take them from the execution of a black radical through elections in a Latin American country to their murder by "a human time bomb" Vietnam veteran. Only then does Jack briefly awaken from his "passion for the vicarious." The novel aspires to the acerbic nihilism of Ambrose Bierce, from whom its epigraph, but contents itself with knocking down straw men, the opportunistic leading the naive on behalf of the unworthy in an essentially static portrait in black. Dunne to Perfection

I'm always suspect of reviews like Anna's. In 2007 when she posted THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE was already 20 years old, and Dunne dead for 3. Even wife Joan Didion's respected tribute YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING was old news in '07. So when there is no good reason to struggle through 475 pages that are not being enjoyed the barbed review she gets to write at the end seems to be the purpose. I suspect an axe being ground.

I have no qualms about a chapter apologizing for digression. That's called irony, and THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE is, in my opinion, a fabulous sarcastic take on American politics during Dunne's thinking life. Yes, time does skip about - this is no easily digested summer reading. Not Faulkner-esque, but it does require some willingness to keep track of characters and what we already know about them. The style is much more like Twain, poking intellectual laugh-out-loud fun at the mighty. There is lots of graphic language, but then the mighty do lots of graphic things, and Dunne's language is not gratuitous but a fair representation of the characters he has drawn. Including a priest who does not indulge himself but knows that most people do and has no compunction about spending time in their company, and describing them aptly.

I read for pleasure only, from Faulkner to Oprah Book Club (not many of the latter, admittedly). When I don't like a book I stop reading it, and I complete about 15 a year. THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE, my second Dunne, is one of my favorites in a while. I liked NOTHING LOST as well. I will be reading a lot more by this author.

Lifeless book from a lively writer

I think John Gregory Dunne is a seriously underrated writer, especially in his memoirs like Harp and Vegas. His novels aren't as good as his non-fiction, although Playland is lively reading. He clearly put a lot of work into The Red White and Blue-- maybe too much. Its attempt to evoke the 1960s "radical chic" atmosphere is labored and unreal-- Dunne mistakes lists for descriptions-- and its characters are shallow and programmatic. Too bad.

The Red White and Blue

ISBN 0312909659 - There's a Kennedy-esque-ness to this book in some ways, but it's much more a Kennedy-wanna-be. Dunne can't seem to fit all the Kennedy into one family, so spreads it out over two connected clans.

Jack Broderick, the narrator, is the son of Hugh, a self-made billionaire who only becomes free to pursue his goals when his wife dies. He has high hopes for his three children - and even before the book begins, the sons have pretty much failed him. Only the daughter comes close, by marrying the president's brother. President Fritz Finn and his family are more the Kennedy-type than the Brodericks, but the two families are close and remain that way even after the death of Jack's sister. With Hollywood connections, lots of money, the fringe "revolutionary" elements of the 1960s and politics playing an obviously large role, the Kennedy-like images are all there.

Bro, Jack's brother, is an unusual priest with a high profile and connections around the world. Jack meets and marries Leah, an outspoken radical Jewish lawyer. She remains his one real love, even after their divorce. After the end of their marriage, Jack finds himself in Vietnam, where he interviews servicemen. Those interviews are later turned into a bestselling book which plays a surprising role in the rest their lives. When Bro and Leah are murdered, the killer and his connection to Jack ties the entire story neatly together.

The story skips around so much that it's sometimes hard to tell where you are in the timeline, who is married to who, and who is alive or dead at that point - and it's really hard to care. That a chapter begins with the phrase "Let me digress" is sort of silly; half of the book or more is the narrator digressing. The language in the book is a little rough, if you're the type who cares, with racial slurs and "bad words" for parts of the anatomy abounding. Almost everyone seems to have slept with almost everyone else in the book, but it's the 1960s and probably not surprising. Still, rampant sex and swearing will be outweighed by good writing and a good story - sadly, The Red White and Blue has neither.

I finally found what I have been looking for !

I went through a rough transition when I found out that God may be an ET ! I stood by my policy of keeping an open mind no matter how extreme it may appear to be. I have been doing a lot of reading on the different ET's who have been working with us. Just finished reading another book on the Arcturians. When I started to read this one to see how their stories compared, it took me completely by surprise. The other book pales in comparison with this one. It concurs with the material in that book, but has a lot more detail, and appears to be a lot more accurate. This book had such a strong impact on me that I could only handle small amounts at a time. There is a lot packed between the lines. The energies that pour out of it are very evident. This book will hold your attention all the way. You will realize that you are one of the most fortunate beings in this World to have the good fortune of reading this book. It will change your life. I especially enjoyed the detailed tour of their Spacecraft, and how they transmute the different energies. The Arcturians are one of the most advanced and benevolent group of beings watching and gently guiding us into the 5th dimension. It also provides you with some very powerful techniques for clearing your mind and developing your psychic abilities. You will appreciate the power, the protection and the gifts presented to you by the Arcturians. I would love to share this new discovery with others who may be interested in the Arcturians. A CONFIRMATION for me. Compassionate ET's helping humanity.

A personal contact/encounter experience with 2 beings calling themselves "Masters of Light" led me to seek out who they were, and they are the Arcturians, Masters of Light, Energy and Aura. I had NO idea this book was published so long ago, and many, many things written about them, coming from them, I can assure you, are true. I found myself, still, totally amazed to meet them, and am awed by the gentle, loving God-like presence and energy they emminate. The drawing in the book which shows their face, is a close resemblence, but misses the importance of the nose structure that radiates and glows while they are communicate. That is their facial focal point. I 100% believe in the descriptives of the rooms on their spacecraft. I am also very greatful for discovering this book, so I could learn more about who they are, and what their purpose is in aiding the planet, along with co-operation from the Galactic Federation, and the Brotherhood who is doing the work of Jesus in guiding the planet towards her ascension. You get a real feel for their loving energy and consistant message of helping humanity. I have found no other books that bring forth this feeling, than this wonderful book.

Packed with information

Well written, thought-provoking channeled information from extra-terrestrials commonly mentioned by other authors. I know I'm going to have to hold onto this book and refer to it often on my spiritual journey, as a lot of it was difficult to grasp in the first read (and I'm a big reader). As they say, the more I learn, the less I know...and I love it that way. What this book did was to point my way on the journey, and validate the steps I have taken so far.

Not recommended for general reading. This book will only make sense to you if you are already on the path.

Russell Walker, Ph.D. is Clinical Associate Professor at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Russell Walker has developed and taught leading executive programs on Big Data and Analytics, Strategic Data-Driven Marketing, Risk Management, and Global Leadership. He founded and teaches the popular Analytical Consulting Lab, which brings Kellogg MBAs together with real-world projects in Analytics and the use of Big Data. Power of Big Data that you cant find by "google search" or HBR

This book explains the definition and power of Big Data by providing numerous examples that, as a consumer, we an relate to - Netflix to LinkedIn to Nest. I am responsible for an IoT platform in a B2B environment and this book provided many great monetization strategies. What amazed me the most is how thoughtful the author was to make these solid concepts actionable (SIGMA framework) for people like me.

I highly recommend this book esp. some on in product management role!

Like the Internet before it

This book is one of the few to provide business leadership with the tools they need to understand how the presence of big data will impact existing business models. There are two areas that are of particular value to the audience, namely data fusion (Chapter 6) and business model disruption (Chapter 11).

Data fusion is an underappreciated aspect to big data and is extremely hard to do right especially when the myriad of GIS data products are incorporated into customer and asset data. Data fusion is a key to monetizing data. Chapter 6 is a solid summary of what several companies accomplished by taking the time to do data fusion right from the beginning. There is always an egregious investment in time and resources to determine the data to fuse, how to prepare each data source to be fused and then designing and testing the fusion process. This is implicit in what Zillow and Mint did and the book provides well-defined lessons learned that can be incorporated into other similar efforts.

Chapter 11 addresses the key theme of business model disruption. The presence of data that fits the definition of “big data” does not mean that a company can go out, sell data, and start printing money to support its business operations, both internal and external. More likely the presence of a business big data means that its current business model is going to undergo major perturbations and the author provides an example of this with location services. All aspects of the business model (customer facing, value proposition, core processes, partner process, cost structure and revenue models) will be impacted. Like the Internet before it, big data provides businesses with the ability to positively impact all areas of its operations and help manage the risks associated with structural changes.

The author also demonstrates how value creation partners can not only be incorporated into the data monetization process but also the challenges of doing so and the potential outcomes that exist from such an investment.

Dr. Walker has provided a book for leadership to determine the breadth and depth of changes that will occur to a business model based on the presence of big data. Very few do that, certainly none in big data that I can remember.

Big Data and Data Science has become a buzz-word in the analytics space. Dan Ariely famously quoted, "everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it..." For anyone who has worked in the space, it definitely true - everyone wants to do it but few know how.

Russ' hands on experience with analytics and big data shines as he is able to provide his perspective on opportunities. His use of real-life examples bring tangibility and depth to this revolutionary technology.

I would recommend this book for both aspiring and accomplished Data Scientists alike. I believe that the concepts and examples provide to apply Big Data to your organization to drive new profits for your business.
