Some superhuman AI agents might be created to benefit humankind; some might go rogue. (Is Siri the template, or HAL?) The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. Shanahan makes it clear that we need to imagine both possibilities if we want to bring about the better outcome.

An exellent, brief introduction to the issues of the singularity and AI more generally

This is an excellent, brief book. Unlike many books in this field, it gets right to the point as well as filling the newbie in on vital aspects of applicable technologies. The book is somewhat philosophical but looks at the whole space of AI up to and including the singularity. It does not take a strong stance on what is possible technologically but explores what the implications are if it turns out to be the case that AI is possible.

Just got the trout of North America as gift, beautiful pictures, but for the life of me I can't understand why you didn't include the steelhead trout instead of to pictures of salmon. Coho and kokanee instead of king salmon. Apparently skipped north coast rivers from ca.or. and Washington. Would have loved to see drawings of a fresh steelhead after all it is a Trout...

This workbook uses a different approach. Each view of the solid represents a letter of the alphabet. The letters are by definition 2D representations and when they are combined to create a 3D object, visualizing it becomes quite a challenge.

About the Author
Dan D. Dimitriu, PhD, P.E., is a tenured professor in SAC’s Physics, Engineering, and Architecture Department and has been the Engineering Program Coordinator at San Antonio College since 2001. He has 21 years of teaching experience in post-secondary education, five years in academic research, and 23 years in private practice as a professional engineer. He has worked on research projects at North Dakota State University and holds also an MBA in International Economic Relations. He has managed several NSF and Department of Education MSEIP grants for SAC, and has been a co-PI for a NASA CIPAIR grant with the University of Texas at San Antonio and for an NSF CCLI grant with Wright University. He was elected Vice Chair of the Two Year College Division of ASEE in 2005 and was the recipient of 2006 NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also named “San Antonio’s Top Professor” by Scene in SA Monthly in 2006. In 2005 he was the only community college committee member and presenter for the “Enhancing Community College Pathways into Engineering Careers,” a collaborative effort by the National Academy of Engineering’s Committee on Engineering Education and the National Research Council Board on Higher Education and Workforce . Their final report described the evolving roles of community colleges in engineering education, identified exemplary programs at community colleges and model partnerships between two- and four-year engineering schools, and made recommendations for future research in this area. He has also made numerous presentations at the American Society for Engineering Educators Annual Conferences. Dr. Dimitriu is also coordinator for the Alamo Community College District’s participation in NASA’s Aerospace Scholars program and concurrently serves as the director for SAC’s MESA Center. This workbook is a resultant of his leadership and expertise in developing curricula, coordinating engineering educational programs, years of teaching, and years of professional practice.

Great for beginners moving into intermediate visualization

For moving from basics to intermediate visualization, this is it! So many other books have great drawings but no solutions. This not only has solutions, it has several so you can start over or work your way up to more advanced visuals. Also, the letters are an optical obstacle, so there's always a challenge. Perfect for beginners, like me, looking to get adept in engineering drawings so I can carry that into CAD.

About the Author

James Frederick Ivey, MD, grew up in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by ice cream and comic books in a drug store run by his parents. He graduated with a degree in biology, went on to medical school, and currently holds a courtesy professorship at the University of Florida where he regularly mentors medical students. He has one son, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He lost his first wife in 2004 but remarried and has lived in Gainesville, Florida, for the past twelve years.

Ivey's earlier work, Book 1 of the Inevitable Truth, received an endorsement from Professor Charles Taliaferro, chairman of the Department of Philosophy at St. Olaf College.

A Substantial and Helpful Contribution to the Important Discussion

with the author's:
- memory(!) of ancient philosophy, theology and other readings
you have done;
- the way he weaves his thoughts together in such a coherent and
compelling way;
- the gracious spirit with which he writes, not wanting to impose his
views, but invite;
- the generous orthodoxy which he exhibits (Gandhi will be in heaven);
- his grasp of science and theology and philosophy, with some great quotes;
- the practicality of his presentation of the Good News to ordinary people;
- the beauty of his depiction of our Savior and Lord!!

I liked this book !

This is a bright shining book that weaves Science, Philosophy and Theology into an interesting read for Christians and for people of other
faiths. While reading the book my head would be filled with the many ideas presented. When I wasn't reading the book I would be thinking about what I had just read.
I have not read Dr.Ivey's first book THE PHYSICS and PHILOSOPHY of the BIBLE, so the glossary of words were very helpful to me. He gives credit to Steven Goldman, by way of Science Wars, for the word glossary. The glossary of proper names helped me to become aquainted with the people in the book that I didn't know. I liked the book and I know it expanded my knowledge.

It is terrible. I have basically learned nothing from it

Im in calc 3 and have been using this book since calc 1, they just came out with a new one for calc 3 that we are using. It is terrible. I have basically learned nothing from it. I am an A student and I have had to learn everything from the internet as my school insists on using this book because it is free electronically. Im glad they are looking out for us financially but this book is worthless. You can tell they are trying to make you think conceptually but they just aren't good at it. When given problems the instructions just aren't clear enough. They fail giving the student a step by step approach to problems. Oh and no solutions so you cant check your work. Fail, it pisses me off every time we use it, I want to print it off just so I can burn it.

As a student at Grand Valley St Univ. in the calculus classes this was the book to get. There is an electronic version that if for free download and it is the same exact thing except the electronic version has colors in it. Having this book for calculus 1 and 2 i recognized many things that not only I didn't like but also my classmates and professors. First off, this book definitely doesn't have enough examples. This book will run through a problem with new skills and steps that you just need to pick up on. The description in some of the chapters are vague and definitely leave you to google it or just figure it out by yourself. On top of all of that, many of the instructions for what to do with certain problems or graphs are also vary vague and not at all descriptive enough.

If you are in calculus at this school you must get this book in one way or another but I would recommend just doing the electronic version. If you wanted this for future reference or anything like that it isn't worth it at all.

A highly recommended novel, examining a world ruled by women, for women. Men are only required for breeding and manual labour.

Sisterland is all about women. Men are only needed for breeding and heavy labour. Women no longer need them and every female has a role within the land. There are limited thoughts allowed, memories are censored via 'memory-keepers' and emotions are strictly controlled. The governing body of Sisterland are a group of nine women, who make all decisions for the good of their country. Mothers are not allowed bond with their babies, male children are not celebrated and the concept of love is unknown. Living quarters are allocated, not chosen, life partners are assigned and every day is extremely regimental. Women can not leave their homes without wearing masks to protect them from the atmosphere and 'nature' is piped in through speakers and air vents in the form of bird song and various scents.
Constance is struggling with controlling her emotions and when she is chosen to 'baby-fuse' and become pregnant, for the good of Sisterland, she feels 'mos' that she had never know existed. Her regimented surroundings start to seem smothering and she has more questions than answers. If only she had someone to talk to. Can she risk asking about her feelings? Is there anyone in Sisterland she can completely trust? Is this place really for the benefit of womankind or is there more than meets the eye?

Martina Devlin has delved into her imagination and thrust the reader into a world of 'what if'...
What if you were not allowed think what you wanted to? What if emotions were a commodity? What if you were only giving birth to increase the population? All combined, these concepts are fantastical, but when individually examined, many have occurred in many regimes, worldwide, already. How insane was the Nazi regime during WWII? How many baby girls have been dumped in China? How many young women were used for breeding an Aryan Race? Why do whole countries let a small number of people make such important decisions without questioning their motives? Simplistic, I know, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and this book brings the idea to a new level. Set in the near future, science is not the cause of this extreme idea of a female-led society. Unusually, there is no manipulation of embryos, artificial insemination or test tube trials. The good old fashioned baby-making ways are used, but under controlled guidance from specialised staff. Pregancy terms are shortened, to facilitate more births at a faster rate, and 'Sourcing places' take the place of hospitals. The Nine (the governing body of Sisterland) are a sinister crew, who have more than a few shady moments, making the book even more interesting. How far-fetched is this novel? Not very, it seems. Restricting the flow of information and editing history can lead to a very different future. Clever manipulation, piped smells and music, thought-forming chants and complete segregation. Is it completely improbable? This amazingly clever novel makes it seem eerily possible. Using an inquisitive young woman as its protagonist, the author is able to address the whole background to Sisterland, and how it came to be. The additional characters are fantastically drawn and link many issues seamlessly. It may take the reader a little while to settle into the language and identify with individual characters, but once in, you won't want to leave this bizarre world. Your dreams may move to another level, your thoughts on history may jar and your awareness of your own emotions may increase. Welcome to Sisterland. A world not that far removed from the one we live in...

Will find a place in the canon. Hugely effective dystopian urban fantasy.

About Sisterland

Urban fantasy (fantasy/sci-fi set in a world that is very definitely and recognisably Earth) is not a genre I read often, for no reason other than there being only so many hours in a year. How glad I am that I picked up Martina Devlin’s urban fantasy ‘About Sisterland’, which I chose based on her previous excellent novels, rather than on genre per se.

Sisterland is a utopian society set in the 22nd Century, occupying the area we know as North and South America. After Man-kind virtually destroyed the Earth during World War III, the women of Sisterland had no choice other than to seize the reins of power. Eschewing the violence, emotion, instability and danger inherent in the failed Patriarchy (which had had ten thousand years to prove itself, to be fair) the benign dictatorship of Beloved and “the Nine” set out to create a utopia of calm, rational, non-violent, equitable living. What could possibly go wrong?

It is impossible to read this chilling novel without reference to some of the absolute literary classics which have informed its creation. Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Margaret Atwood and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil were all close to mind as I read Sisterland. The world has developed its own range of Double-speak and the neologisms are interesting and easy to place (although a helpful glossary is included). The “Soma” of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (a gram is better than a damn) would not be tolerated in Sisterland, which has a fairly draconian attitude to healthy living and mind-altering substances, although wine is allowed. But the function of Soma (to placate and ameliorate the masses) is given over in Sisterland to workers called Flickers who dispense careful rations of positive emotions to sisters who need them (and who can afford them). As our protagonist, Constance, is about to discover; all sisters are equal, but some sisters are more equal than others.

Unlike in Huxley, there is no official hierarchy of inhabitants, no woman is an Epsilon semi-moron, sweeping the streets, because Sisterland is a meritocracy and all work is for the good of the community and no work is demeaning…well, apart from that carried out by men. I found it fascinating that after a lifetime of talking and reading about farmhands and hired hands, I never fully appreciated the demeaning and insulting nature of the phrase until a café owner in Sisterland speaks of having “two pairs of hands” working in the kitchen. The hands are attached to arms and the arms are attached to men, but that’s not really in her thoughts; when these two pairs of hands wear out, they will be ‘discontinued’ and replaced with new young slaves. Problem solved.

Devlin has taken a fascinating sideways glance at extremism and segregation. Whether you choose to see this as a parable of Northern Ireland’s two communities pulling apart instead of working together, the scandal of misogyny and female subjugation, or the widening chasm between Western values and those of the developing world, Devlin gives us a not very exaggerated view of what happens when we decide to waste the talents and abilities of an entire sub-section of our human family. Fascinating and worthy book. Highly recommended.

Now when a society tries to oppress emotions and memories like Sisterland does

Both females and males have the same innate and finite number of emotions as a whole, but when it comes to each individual person either female or male that is where it changes. Emotions are not relegated via genderism but rather by individualism. Everybody is different at the individual level and we each share different emotions in different ways. One individual may have a tighter control over a certain emotion while another individual has a weaker control over that very same emotion. Emotions are a psychological study not a sociological study, therefore emotions or certain emotions do not belong to one gender or one race or one society. Now when a society tries to oppress emotions and memories like Sisterland does; then it is a society trying to suppress and control the human will of the individual which makes that society very non-tactile and sterile. This is never a good thing nor will it work one hundred percent effectively. There is one book I would advise a reader to read before or after they read Martina Devlin’s ABOUT SISTERLAND and this book is Aldous Huxley’s BRAVE NEW WORLD REVISITED. It is a great non-fiction work explaining how people who hunger for power will use propaganda to brainwash and control the individual.

The major thing I got out of Devlin’s ABOUT SISTERLAND was yes, of course, in speaking of physical biology, females and males are quite obviously different, but emotionally females and males are quite the same. In the “Interview with the author” section Devlin is asked this question: “Can you reduce ABOUT SISTERLAND to one sentence?” Devlin responds with “I can reduce it to one word: extremism.” As in most dystopian novels, the theme is how totalitarian societies operate in wanting total complete control of their citizens or subjects, but I think the deeper meaning of ABOUT SISTERLAND is emotions and how they play out in the life of individuals.

Devlin also has shown through ABOUT SISTERLAND that there is a very fine line between groupism and individualism. A society cannot force all of its citizenry to conform 100% to the will of the leader or leaders of that society. For the most part, they can get the majority to conform to most of their ideas and plans. The majority in this instance are usually considered asleep and led blindly by the leadership of their society. H. L. Mencken coined the term “boobigeois” to this definition. Now, how a revolution happens is when the majority no longer can support the leadership of their society and they revolt against the leadership of that society. In other words, the haves {the leadership} are defeated by the current have nots {the minority who now have become the majority} now after the revolution is over the old have not minority become the new majority while the old have majority becomes the new have not minority. This can be summed up by the theory promoted by Hegel know as historical dialectics. Historical dialectics also can be summed up in a simple mathematical formula which is as follow: thesis + antithesis = synthesis.

In writing dystopian literature, an author seems confined to finite topics and within those narrow confines different authors seem to come up with new and refreshing storylines of their own that richly enhance the genre of dystopian literature. Devlin has most brilliantly excelled at doing this with ABOUT SISTERLAND. Devlin has found another genre of literature that she belongs in the upper echelons of that genre and that genre would be dystopian literature. ABOUT SISTERLAND rates right up there, no it surpasses, Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM and 1984 as well as Huxley’s BRAVE NEW WORLD also Bradbury’s FAHRENHEIT 451.

Devlin, as in her past novels, has done it again with ABOUT SISTERLAND. She has so richly given us both in depth sociological and psychological dimensions to the development of each one of her characters found in ABOUT SISTERLAND even right down to the most minor one, as well as, giving us most vivid and lucid details of each one of her settings in ABOUT SISTERLAND that it makes you feel that you are apart of the story as a character instead of just a mere reader of the novel. This is a true mark of an excellent author and writer of fiction of any genre and that is why Devlin should be considered to be in the upper echelons of the elite class of fiction writers of all time.

ABOUT SISTERLAND should be a college textbook in an upper level college course of literature, history, sociology, psychology, political science or philosophy. If I was a professor at university teaching a course in dystopian literature, I would make Devlin’s ABOUT SISTERLAND required reading and it would be read completely every time I taught the class. I would require each student of the class to write a minor opinion paper on it, as well as, have an exam on it. Both would count as 25% of their total grade.

Now, to the book.

Devlin delves into emotions and memories in a most highly complexed way, but how she effectively does this is to make them very understandable through her characters feelings and how they react to them.

In ABOUT SISTERLAND, Devlin also effectively gives us an understanding of how a relationship between a man and a woman develops in various ways: sexually, emotionally, etc. through her two main characters Constance and Harper. Devlin also discusses how important family life between a man and a woman is as well as how it is important when a baby comes along. It is not fair for a baby not to have the love and support or a nurturing family unit.

Devlin always gives us O’Henry twists in her novels. The reader will not be disappointed because she gives a couple of them in ABOUT SISTERLAND!

There is a wonderful section of topic questions at the back of the book that would be a wonderful aid to any book club choosing to read Devlin’s latest work entitled ABOUT SISTERLAND.

Josiah Gregg, as a young man, spent almost a decade in the Santa F' trade and made eight trips across the plains with his goods. This story in its scrupulous detail appears in Commerce of the Prairies, but of his subsequent life very little has been known. In this book, and in a companion volume to fellow, compiled from the hitherto unknown diary, and from letters, many of them little known, which Maurice Garland Fulton most fortunately procured from Gregg's own descendants, is published for the first time an account of Gregg's career until his death in 1850.this first book chronicles the period from Gregg's retirement from the Santa F' trade in 1840 through his experiences in the East, on the plains, in Texas, and with the army in the Mexican War to the very eve of the Battle of Buena Vista, in 1847.

Maurice Garland Fulton's enthusiastic and enlightened editing of the diary and letters, and the cogent biographical essay provided as a historical introduction to the books by Paul Horgan, bring into print what may well prove to be one of the paramount discoveries in Western Americana in this decade. This book, and its second part to follow, appear as volumes in The American Exploration and Travel Series, a series devoted to accounts of explorers, traders, and travelers, who have provided some of the most romantic and fascinating chapters in the history of the American domain.

Historical Masterpiece of the Southwest

In 1831, on a suggestion from his doctor to travel west to improve his health, Josiah Gregg joined a wagon train of Sante Fe traders. The result is a highly acclaimed first hand narrative of the Sante Fe trade and life on the prairies during the 1830's. Gregg's vivid writing style illustrates the many hardships and adventures of life along the Sante Fe Trail and into Mexico. We read about traveling through barren deserts, inconsistencies of the weather, the always present danger of marauding Indians and Mexicans, the questionable Mexican governmental policies, etc. Being an amateur naturalist (he had several species of plants named after him), Gregg describes geographical landforms, geology, and plant and animal life extremely well. He also gives clear, precise and realistic descriptions of the cultures and customs of both the Indians and native Mexicans from how they dressed, to how they constructed their homes; religious, spiritual and matrimonial beliefs; how food was secured and prepared; theories on future agricultural practices and uses, etc. Gregg was a keen and acute observer of his immediate surroundings which is evident in both his writing style and presentation of the subject. Professor Moorhead's editing is second to none.

Fascinating Primary Source to Santa Fe Trail - Great History

The full title of this book suggests that it is much more than a dry account of business practices: The Commerce of the Prairies, or the Journal of a Santa Fe Trader, During Eight Expedition Across The Great Western Prairies, and A Residence of Nearly Nine Years in Northern Mexico. Illustrated with maps and engravings. By Josiah Gregg.
The period was 1831 - 1840. On paper Northern Mexico was an immense holding that loosely included what is today Texas and New Mexico and stretched southward more than 500 miles through the Chihuahuan Desert to the Mexican trading centers of Durango and Chihuahua. Fierce, nomadic Indians prevented the Spanish and Mexicans from settling this vast domain. A large, loosely defined central section of the continent was known simply as Indian territory. American trading caravans departing from Franklin, Missouri did not encounter any settlements, not even ranches, until within 100 miles of Santa Fe. The long route southward from Santa Fe to Durango and Chihuahua was nearly as hazardous.
Josiah Gregg's narratives make marvelous reading. His style is engaging and his descriptions are accurate. We readers share his love and fascination of this marvelously wild and dangerous territory. I have read very few modern travel narratives as intriguing and well-written as Gregg's writings.
Despite their constant threat, Gregg is sympathetic to the plains Indians and documents how the behavior of unscrupulous and foolish traders have exacerbated relations with the Indians. He cites unnecessary killings of buffalo by travelers who are overwhelmed by the shear size of the herds; he even admits to doing so himself on occasion.
He is a man of commerce and tells us much about trade with Mexico. Rampant corruption among the tax collectors, custom officials, and governmental officials is an unavoidable business cost. For remote Santa Fe, Durango, and Chihuahua, American trade is much desired, but Mexicans view the American traders with suspicion. The first American traders (the Pike expedition) were immediately imprisoned for nine years.
I highly recommend this remarkable, fascinating account of travel along the Santa Fe Trail in the 1830s. I cannot imagine a more intriguing, more engaging narrative than that created by Josiah Gregg.
This edition of The Commerce of the Prairies was first published in 1926. The editing by Milo Milton Quaife is excellent. The footnotes are interesting and add considerable value. Josiah Gregg's original publication was in two volumes and included extensive, detailed, and accurate observations on flora, fauna, and the native Indians and is often cited by historians. This shortened version by Lakeside Press (now published by University of Nebraska Press) is an ideal introduction to the Santa Fe Trail.

Primary Source, in depth, discussion of the southern plains

Shortly after Mexican Independence interest in establishing trade with Sante Fe, Mexico's most northerly province, became ever more popular. Josiah Gregg was preceded by Mountain Men who explored the area, but he was the first with sufficient education to describe the people, land features and Indians with whom traders would have to deal. His work constitues a PREFACE to other books dealing with the Santa Fe Trail and its growing interest to the United States. Independence, MO, and Fort Smith and Van Buren, AR. - were the northern and southern starting points for Santa Fe respectively. The book is as much a tale of encounters as it is a repository of valuable information. A 'FIRST READ' for persons interested in Santa Fe and the Westward Movement. Another of a variety of fascinating histories of the Southwest.
