Uneducated Author

I read this book using kindle unlimited.

This is all basic common sense info. No book needed.

Now to why I say uneducated author.... because the author writes to use cloth diapers instead of disposable. But you should buy and stock up on disposable feminine products and toilet paper. Good grief we couldn't live without those two items. But in fact Preppers should invest in cloth reusable pads and family cloth, cloth toilet paper. Think of the cloth disappearing moms that use cloth wipes on their child and washes them with the diapers. The same applies to cloth menstrual pads. In fact coming from a woman that has sewn cloth pads that are professional quality, they are more comfortable. Just soak like you do diapers, (I do add oxiclean and tide) and they wash out perfectly without staining. To make family cloth, cut up some flannel, cause it's soft and absorbent, serge, zig zag or use pinking shears to cut them out to keep the raw edges from fraying. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on TP, buy lots of flannel off the bolt and make your own TP. Then put aside what you would have spent on something else. If you don't want to buy cloth pads, just use folded up flannel. Or better yet cut some rectangles about the size needed out of flannel and polar fleece. Use several layers of flannel and back it with the polar fleece. The fleece is water resistant so it helps prevents leaks. Hand sew them together. Since they won't be machine washes this will be very effective, reusable and washable.

My other issue is using homemade sun screen. Yes I make my own soap, lotions and other bath and body products. But homemade sun screen is not something I would use or recommend. First off there is no way to guarantee the zinc protection from the sun. My other issue is putting it in an oil. Yes coconut oil is wonderful stuff but it's still an oil. And what happens when we apply oil to the skin. It attracts the sun's rays and burns the skin just like meat in a frying pan with oil. A better option would be tightly woven fabric to cover the skin. When my mom was little, her mother applied baby oil to her skin thinking it would protect her from the sun as she worked in the garden, did outside chores or helped on the farm. Least to say both my grandparents had skin cancer. So applying oil to the skin is never recommend with added ingredients to provide SPF protection or not. You can't guarantee it's protection so why take that risk. I would rather use old sunblock (quality name brand) and cover up than use homemade in this case. I say name brand sun block because cheaper store brands has shown in tests to be much lower quality than on the label. Find a coupon and buy a good quality name brand instead. Your skin and health is worth it.

Common items for barter

I read this book expecting to find a list of obscure items the author thought would be good for barter in a shtf scenario. What I found was more a list of common items ie. Food, matches, etc. that can be used as barter. This book is an easy read. It takes no more than a few minutes to finish it. The book describes 24 items that the author feels can be used for barter in a shtf scenario. There is a brief description of why you will need each item. Every item on the list has a photo, which isn’t that common in an e-book. This book is an easy read. It takes no more than a few minutes to finish it. The list is pretty basic, anyone that has been prepping for a while has probably already stockpiled these items. This is a good book for someone new to prepping. I would recommend the book to everyone as it is a quick read, and could very well prompt you to think of other items.

Very well written, though short. Some things are well known to hold onto/barter with, but definitely some useful suggestions within. Read very quickly, as I read fast anyhow.

Notestein's Attempt to Foreshadow English Colonists

Mr Notestein provides a social and political history of England during the later stages of the Tudor dynasty and the early portion of the Stuart reign. He takes a holistic approach to society in an attempt to draw as many analogies and associations with early American colonial life as possible. The majority of this piece emphasizes the individual classes of people found in England. A fairly thorough description of each group is provided along with personal insights into daily life. Quite frequently Notestein creates his own scenarios of daily life from various diaries and other various research materials, that are well footnoted. He also develops a firm understanding of the role of the church and of the state in the pysche of the 17th century Englishman. Throughout the piece he provides small analogies to the social life of the colonists as seen through the eyes of the 17th century Englishman.
Notestein does an adequate job of previewing life as a colonist by analyzing life as a 17th century Englishmen. I would suggest it to any serious colonial historian.

I had noted this book cited in a 'footnote' of one of the British histories I was reading, then obtained the book on loan from my public library.
Was so impressed with the helpful info it contained in assisting me to understand the time period, that I wanted my own copy for continued reference as I write my PhD dissertation..

I found this book to be the best coverage of *contemporary* physics topics and written in a ...

I taught from this book to junior and senior undergraduates over one semester. Of the four books I considered, I found this book to be the best coverage of *contemporary* physics topics and written in a style that physics majors would appreciate. There is a huge amount of information, so it is important to select the subtopics appropriately for the level of the class, but I found that I could design the type of course I really wanted to teach from this book without the need to supplement it with much other material. Example of some special topics in that section of my class: molecular electronics (AFM-controlled break junctions); magnetism (spintronics); photonics (electromagnetic cloaks); nanomechanics (coupled NEMS device and superconducting qubit) - plus tons of stuff in nanofluidics and biology that I didn't even get to. Where else could you get that breadth of information in a single source?

Excellent intro to nano!

This is an outstanding intro to nanotechnology. It's aimed at something like a first-year graduate student in physics, so some background is assumed, but there are brief refreshers on useful solid-state concepts. The writing style is clear and concise, helping the reader to develop intuition with respect to what happens as surface effects start to compete with the behavior of a bulk material. The depth of coverage is appropriate for a survey course on nano, and there are plenty of pointers to further reading for anyone who is interested in diving into a particular subject. All in all, this is a well-written book, and I'm sure I will find myself referring to it when I need a reminder about how something works.

Misprint in months!

We gave to my daughter for Christmas but unfortunately the calendar's months were incorrect. There was no January and no October. Instead, April was in January's place and July was in October's place. Therefore, there are two Aprils and two Octobers in this calendar! My daughter is only 2 so she can't read. We just got this to hang in her room since she is fascinated with the moon, but I would expect the months to be correct!

I love astronomy and got this calendar for 2015. I'm getting it for 2016 too because it is so beautiful! I use gel pens and metallic markers to write important dates because the background is black. IT LOOKS GREAT! Just a little disclaimer though, when I first bought it, I thought the huge moon pictures on the top of the calendar were glow in the dark, It's actually just the smaller moons on the calendar days that show the moon phases for the month that glows, Still! Great calendar and great information about the moon phase for each month.

Somewhat misleading

This book is arranged as a dictionary, although somewhat slender. It does not provide the reader with general names, but with actual names of persons, places, and things of the past (i.e. Alexander the Great, William the Conqueror, Edward the Lawgiver, Normandy, etc.). Basically, this book, for most of its entries, does not list the meanings and origins of the names that it contains. It is merely a quick reference book for someone who has trouble remembering people, places, and things in history. Its definitions and descriptions are also quite short. Don't purchase this book if you are looking for an actual dictionary that lists, describes, and defines first and/or last names.

An Excellent Addition to Stan's Other Books

This book is a great addition to Stan's other offerings. In this book, Stan presents a few more recent Bigfoot sightings and experiences, but mainly he presents a lot of cryptid/alien being sightings and experiences. As he does in his other books, Stan merely presents the eyewitness accounts for readers to consider and draw their own conclusions. If you liked Stan's other books or if you like reading about cryptid encounters, then this is a book that you should read.

Excellent outline and useful review

This is a small pamphlet of only about 35 pages, but it is very well-organized and written to enlighten. Prof. Harari's book "Sapiens" is already a summary history of the human race. Even so, the intellectual framework of his book is worth exposing, which this very short pamphlet does do to a large extent. The "Key Takeaways" are listed, and this provides the framework. Following the list, there are brief, and cogent expansions on these points, that are very worthwhile to read, and take little time and effort. In addition, the author of the pamphlet provides a review which is somewhat more perceptive than the typical review (but a few of the "professional" reviews are certainly very comparable, and possibly preferable, to the review provided in the pamphlet in terms of insight). I read the book, and considered the framework important enough to have in the form of some short summary, which I, personally, do not wish to take the time to write. This pamphlet is, therefore, fairly handy for me. Because the framework is largely exposed in this pamphlet, I think this can be very highly recommended to people who do not have the time to read Prof. Harari's important book. His book is worth reading, and for those of us, like myself, who read his book, this short pamphlet is still to be recommended for capturing a lot of the intellectual framework of the book. Overall, the outline provided is excellent, and the review is one of the more revealing reviews, i.e. more insightful, than most.

A Perfect Companion Guide

As a Psychology major and history buff, I enjoy books that focus on human evolution, and "Sapiens" is the perfect thing for that. I had to read it a while ago for one of my college courses, but I didn't have the time to go and re-read it like I wanted to. This summary, in my opinion, is perfect. It highlights all the key details of the full book, and helped to refresh my mind on some of the things I had forgotten. I feel like this would also be a useful tool if you had to write a paper about it. Even if you don't have to read this for a class, I would highly recommend checking it out anyway. It's pretty eye-opening in some respects.

Human evolution from the Neanderthals to other Homo species and then to Homo-sapiens. What is the prediction of what might happen in the future?

Curious as to what the original book is all about? Don't have time to read the original book? Need to have some idea of what this book is about when talking to others? Need a refresher after reading the original? Then this detailed summary by Eureka is for you!

What caused the reduction in the quality of life according to Yuval Noah Harari, the author of the original book? Domestication of wheat. There do appear to be some sweeping statements in the original book and Eureka describes the original as having been "written in the tone and structure of a long lecture" with the author being described as somewhat cynical, even condescending, when discussing various topics.

About the Author
Mark R. Tercek is president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy, which he joined in 2008. Tercek was previously a managing director and Partner at Goldman Sachs, where he ultimately led the firm's environmental strategy. He lives in Washington, DC.

Jonathan S. Adams is a science writer and conservation biologist. The author of The Myth of Wild Africa, The Future of the Wild, and coeditor of Precious Heritage, he lives in Rockville, Maryland.

Surpsisingly readable. Great anecdotes.

What is an investment banker doing as head of an organization devoted to preserving nature? That was the exact question posed to Mark Tercek by Russell Train, the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency. And it is the starting anecdote in the book. Tercek made his mark as a senior executive at Goldman Sachs - an organization known more for its bottom-line orientation than its desire to do good for the world. But it was at Goldman that he became aware that protecting nature is a good investment. There were many occasions when improving its environmental record helped a company bolster its financial results. As Tercek freely admits, "Our primary motivation was not philanthropy or corporate social responsibility, important as they are, but purely business."

But persons evolve. And as he became more comfortable at The Nature Conservancy, Tercek saw more clearly than ever that "..nature means all species of animals and plants, their habitats and the ecological processes that support them."

What I like about Tercek's approach is that he tries to incorporate business as a partner in conservation. He is an advocate for strong and effective government policy but he is a champion of trying to persuade businesses to voluntarily embark on environmental initiatives. He admits that he is not sure if working with businesses will produce environmental benefits but believes that one has no choice but to try. Given the dominant global role of business it id difficult to argue with that position.

The book is easy to read and has separate chapters on different environmental issues. Take de-forestation. Soy beans from the Amazon rainforest traveled to Liverpool, became chicken feed and then nuggets sold by McDonald's. The activist Greenpeace sent its boat to block the shipping terminal, protestors in chicken suits tied themselves to chair in McDonald's outlets and posters went up showing Ronald McDonald carrying a chainsaw. McDonald's capitulated, joined forces with Greenpeace and pressured the giant agribusiness Cargill to step up its conservation efforts.

Is this a tale of victory of the righteous? Or is it a tale of a malefactor getting away with a token surrender to public outrage? Probably both. But undoubtedly the change did at least lessen the pace of destruction of the rainforest.

Tercek is a believer in market principles such as implementation of a carbon tax to reduce emissions. But he also needs to cover the possibility of "perverse incentives" actually undermining the stated objectives. Thus, for example, an attempt to buy Freon from old refrigerators etc. to take it out of circulation resulted in pirate operations that manufactured it so that they could be sold to the government at a profit.

Over all this is a book that will give you a better grasp of the environmental challenges we face and what major players are doing about this.

Certainly worth reading.

Old ideas, no future here.

While this book is well-authored, the choice of examples and metaphors as well as a slight shift in presentation that re-makes ecology into economics requires a pre-purchase, skeptical, and well-read buyer to browse before buying.

For example, in describing the coffee growers it characterizes the coffee as "shade grown, organic, and free market". This slip of the tongue, changing "fair market" to "free market" sets the tone for further marketization that is often inappropriate and can be distorting. Another example is in water management systems where that of Oman is presented as a wholly money-based way of utilizing water in a desert climate. In fact, the system is largely a local cultural creation, operating for nearly a thousand years, and characterized by intricate communications and property rights buy-ins that also, quite importantly, require no monetary participation from either religious or public institutions such as clinics and baths. In fact, these "free riders" are voluntarily supported by the "owners" as something beneficial to the society they live in.

There are numerous ways this book can be improved by taking a more wide-ranging and less ideological framework to cast its vision of the biological and cultural diversity humans are embedded in and wholly reliant on for their existence. Biocultural norms and management systems vary distinctly in their application from place to place, sometimes changing within a matter of miles from one another.

A more knowledgable, enlightened and rigorous vision can be and must be offered using the explosion of information that has resulted from genetics, larger capacity of trained, globally available, biodiversity professionals, ubiquitous computational devices, and a new wariness regarding international financial markets inability to retain a stable state.
