A good supplement, a not so good textbook

While this book does not go into software and applications thereof, it is nonetheless an excellent introduction for a beginner. I had previously purchased (and worked through most of) The Complete Idiot's Guide to Statistics, but this book really takes more time in the hand-holding stage, simply explaining the concepts, reducing them (which could be a drawback for some people) to their basic fundamentals. So I don't see this a textbook, necessarily, but a supplement to one. The first four or five chapters to this make an excellent primer for whether statistics will be relevant to the reader, and it never really gets too aggressive in its presentation of the math beyond that. And, as has been already pointed out, there is no discussion of applied software.

I would give this three stars for its simple approach, but it is named "U Can", and it is not meant to be a stand alone source of information. I think for it purpose it does very well.

But be clear: This will not be sufficient if you are taking a statistics class, but it might help to clarify basic concepts that get rushed past with more detailed information sources. Bear in mind I am an enthusiast, I do not study math for school - so my opinion should be gauged accordingly. Even so, this is a good book to pair with a more 'conventional' textbook. Recommended in that context, or to see if you have an active enough interest in statistics to explore the subject further.

Nice coverage if it was written in the 1960s

I teach university level statistics and I find this book to be lacking because it covers no modern statistical methods and it has no coverage of analysis software. If you are taking a high school level statistics class where you are not allowed to use a computer and if your teacher is still using methods from the 1960s this is not bad at all. In general the writing and the graphics are nice and clear if you want to do things like calculate a median (or draw a box plot) by hand. Nobody in their right mind works like this any more. Perhaps worse is the fact that fundamental statistical topics are missing. Bayesian statistics, which are the backbone for a huge number of modern methods are not even mentioned in the index.

If you need something to supplement your work in high school class that stresses hand calculations consider this. If you are not stuck working like the early 1960s consider OpenIntro Statistics: Third Edition instead. It is clear and has great coverage of both SAS and R on the books website.

BRAVO FOR STATS FOR DUMMIES!!!!

PHEW! Finally something that makes Stats more fun and interesting for teens. I happened to like stats in school and was disappointed when the concept and importance wasn't discovered by my students. Stats for Dummies is done exactly as the other "Dummies" collections are. Everything is explained in full detail. You receive the simplest of instructions that are easy to understand and help grades go up instead of down. This is a must need for every student who is struggling in their Stats class.

August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse

Pretty decent coverage and info of the upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. I haven't read other reviews of this book but maybe others have noticed and mentioned the same "glaring" typos I found after just a brief glance through the book. On Page 57, in the bottom paragraph the author states" the eclipse ends in the PACIFIC ocean about midway between South America and Africa." Hmm. Then on page 128 while discussing the Saros cycles, the author states "The total solar eclipse of August 29, 2017 is a member of Saros..." We have another total eclipse 8 days after the one occurring that is the subject of the book?? (It occurs on August 21, 2017). Typos occur, I get that

Totally Awesome!

I have never experienced a total solar eclipse, and frankly the experience was not very high on my bucket list until I read this book. Now, I can only say: thank you Marc Nussbaum for alerting me in time to this magical and wondrous event, and for providing me with everything I need to know to be able to enjoy it to the fullest. This book is packed with information about how total solar eclipses occur, why they are so awe-inspiring compared to the mundane partial solar eclipse and lunar eclipses, and all the details regarding equipment for safety and comfort and photography. The writing is clear and accessible even when dealing with complex scientific concepts. But most importantly, the author’s genuine excitement about how transcendent an experience a total solar eclipse can be is truly infectious – I really cannot wait to be there and be a witness to this unique celestial happening. I will also be sending copies of this book to friends and family members so none of them misses out!

Viewing it right

It was March 07, 1970 and I was in New York City completing my medical training. Around 12:30 PM, several of my fellow medical residents pulled me out into Central Park and handed me several sheets of x-ray film to 'protect' my eyes while viewing a total eclipse of the sun. It turns out we were not completely in the path of totality and the x-ray film was not the safest choice of eye protection! I was thrilled to discover recently that I will have another chance to view this spectacular event on August 21, 2017, and was happy to find this book, which devotes an entire chapter to the safety rules I should have followed back in 1970. This time I will do it right! The book is also filled with many other practical hints, especially as regards photographing an eclipse. I learned a lot!

Climate Gamble Climate Gamble takes on the challenge of tackling some of the most controversial issues of the energy policy debate. The outset of the book is quite clear – according to virtually every international study we will have no chance in reaching our climate commitments without the aid of nuclear power. Like it or not, this is a fact according to the studies cited in the book. The authors then go on to painstaking depths in busting various myths for example regarding the dangers of nuclear power.

The book is very easy to read and works as an excellent introductory material to anyone who wants to read balanced views about this source of energy. One doesn’t have to like nuclear power but one can’t either ignore its various benefits over most of the other conventional energy sources.
This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to have an informed view of the debate regarding climate change mitigation and energy.

Yes - The anti-nuclear groups are endangering our future.

This short, 100-page, book packs a punch. The answer to the question in the subtitle is "Yes"; wittingly or unwittingly, environmentalists, mostly as the result of fear built on lack of information, are hindering their own goals with regard to global climate change by opposing nuclear. The coming fourth generation of nuclear will provide clean, safe, abundant and affordable energy to the world, but only if environmentalists get behind it instead of opposing it. Even today, existing nuclear in the US provides some 60+ percent of clean, CO2-free energy. We need more, not less.

Vamos à outra: INDICT vogal I no sistema A E I O U + 2 CONSOANTES ( N, T ) som i médio ( moleza ) agora o outro I que deveria ter o som i também, por essa palavra ser exceção, chamo-la de ai de pai e o C é silente, exceção da letra C.
O arquivo mental para as regras comporta suas exceções, que passam a ser extensões das regras, por isso não as esqueço.
Stress ( sílaba tônica ) das outras palavras
ANABASIS ( e-né-be-ziz ), a terminação VOG 1 + CONS 1 indica proparoxítonos como pyramid, analysis e animal.

TRACHEAE ( trei-ki-i ) no sistema A E I O U + CONS 1 + VOG 2,3 a vogal A soa ei, como em facial, radium e herbaceous. CH com som de K conta 1 consoante.

CONTIGUITY ( kan-ti-guíu-i-ti ) stress em U do grupo final UITY, de continuity e exiguity.

This was a wonderful read. It's an interesting look at the process of online dating, where choices seem limitless, first impressions are crucial and making a lasting connection seems almost impossible. Ellinger does a beautiful job of conveying the anticipation, excitement, hope, anxiety, self doubt and disappointment that make up both dates with individuals and the experience of trying to find a permanent mate using the internet as a medium. I liked reading about the neuroticism that accompanies each email, each text, each date. I had a hard time putting the book down. For anyone who has ever online dated, or for those fortunate enough to have avoided the online world but want a glimpse into the heartbreak behind it, this is a great read.

Honest, tragic, inspiring vignettes about the human experience inside the online dating culture.

This novel takes the reader into the mind and heart of Robert Bethel, searching for "the one" as he navigates the modern online dating labyrinth. It's a highly evocative commentary on the absurdity of the whole scene, contrasted with an unyielding hope that love truly is out there to be found.

There is a healthy respect for our collective cosmic ignorance about what the hell everyone is doing in this online dating mess. While Robert is palpably crushed with each successive breakup, he never takes it out on the other person. It's a Sisyphean journey on which the reader joins Robert and doesn't want to stop, despite the heartache.

There's a humanity and candor in Ellinger's depictions of events, without the reader feeling voyeuristic. And don't mistake "The Online Dater" to be modern incarnation of "The Game" by Neil Strauss where an average guy learns how to pick up Britney Spears on an airplane. Robert's romances are never reduced to notches on his belt.

If you've ever used an online dating service -- either with great success or utter failure -- you'll relate to these vignettes. Highly recommended.

Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, this fantastic novel is occasionally uncomfortable but very rewarding. Reminds me of early Roth. Interesting to see people coming to terms with what it means to be a man in the age of online (but disconnected?) dating.

Enjoyed previous years calendars more.

Previous year calendars were fantastic. Didn't love this one as much. Not as much variety of color. Lots of pink which I am not a fan of. My husband and I had a joke- 'guess what tomorrow's color is... pink!" The purpose of this calendar is visual so that is what I am reviewing. Yes I am picky!

Quality daily desk calendar!

What immediately struck me was how large and beautiful the photos are. Secondly the quality. The pages are loose leaf. No ripping and tearing like most calendars. You put the used page in the back behind the others then in 6 months you turn them all around for the last half of the years' photos. The photos are a variety of close up, vase, landscape, etc which I appreciate. They are all so pretty. I have a little something to look forward to each day. Each page has the name and description of the flower. The pages are housed in sturdy plastic that makes it easy to pull up the page and slip it in the back, as you start a new day.

I attached a photo of last year's France calendar, by a competitor. You will see how much smaller the photo is! Page-A-Day is 7" high and the popular competitor is not even 5.5" high. Also, the date and description on the Flowers calendar is above the photo leaving the pretty flower photo unblemished. It really makes a difference.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this calendar. Last year I got a Somee page-a-day calendar. I did find it to be hilarious, however sometimes I had to skip days because the message was too vulgar to leave up on my desk. This calendar is beautiful and much larger than I was anticipating - as I did not pay attention to the dimensions. I also like that you don't have to tear off each page. They are loose in a clear case and you just move a page to the back each day. (The other side is the last 6 months of the year.) It's a really cheery addition to my desk. Very pleased.

I know brave Mary Kuykendall and she wrote GE's story as honestly as anyone could possibly write it. It's appeal is limited in that not everyone would be curious about what happened at Schenectady's GE plant, but for a treatise on how NOT to run a business, it's well worth your time.
