In the tradition of Wharton and Austen...

This is a little gem of a book that details Monica's search for a husband near the end of the Victorian era in England. Monica is not a man-chasing, mercenary type, but her mother has brought her up to recognize that a woman's social success depends entirely on her ability to catch a husband, particularly at a time when eligible men seem to be in short supply.
This is not a novel of action, but rather of subtle interplay between Monica, her domineering yet loving mother, and various friends of the family. It is poignant and fascinating, and has a setting filled with lavish detail. If you enjoy Edith Wharton in particular, you will likely enjoy this book as well.

Heartbroken to have to say it stinks to high heaven. Also, SPOILERS!

Unredeemably, unremittingly dreadful. I can't believe the genius that produced the Provincial Lady books could have written this. There is no wit, no humor, no meeting of the mind of the author, no character development, no life, no likability. The characters are ALL unpleasant people. The Provincial Lady runs into numerous unpleasant folk, but she herself is so self-deprecatingly adorable -- and the unpleasant encounters are balanced with lovely friendships. Even the protagonist of THANK HEAVEN FASTING (Monica) is awful.

Monica is a brainless airhead, but also somewhat manipulative. Her parents love her, but are incredibly and unkindly controlling and her father likes all their conversations to be very much "on the surface" (which suits Monica just fine). She is a naive debutante in the beginning of the book. She is seduced by a charming captain and allows him to kiss her passionately. The story gets out and Monica is virtually ruined. Because he kissed her. She thinks he's in love with her, but he fails to propose and sails for India. I was hoping this was the moment when Monica would emerge from her trauma with a mind of her own. Nope. Monica admits to herself that her mother was right about everything. Men never propose to "cheap" girls who admit liberties like the kissing. And being proposed to is all that Monica now cares about. Love is meaningless. That's the message of the book. This is the Anti Pride & Prejudice. Monica is a Charlotte Lucas, only stupid.

After her first season, Monica becomes a wallflower during balls at which she was once the belle. Her beauty fades. Her sparkle is gone. She and her mother are worn out by worry and despair over Monica's failure to find a man. Her father is killed by a taxi. Monica wastes time becoming the confidante of a guy who is in love with a married woman, thinking that he might end up proposing to her. The guy is a creep. She knows it, but she wants him to propose anyway.

The last section of the book is entitled The Happy Ending. I was hoping this was the moment when Delafield would relent and cut her heroine some slack. Nope. Just more of the same. When Monica finally receives her long-awaited proposal, it's from an old guy with prawnlike eyes. She is SO grateful. She marries him. The book ends with her prayer that she will be a good wife, and if she has a child, it will be a son.

It's weird that the satire is so flat, so humorless. You never see Delafield peering out from the pages with a wink or a nod, as you do in the Provincial Ladies book. It's as though she's not there at all. It's so dry, it's dried up. So detached, you will be, too.

Does the chauvinism of Victorian England really deserve this prolonged, plodding, humorless satire? There were happy marriages then -- look at Victoria and Albert! This book has got me defending Victorian mores!

THANK HEAVEN FASTING bears no resemblance to the Provincial Lady (much less a Jane Austen masterpiece). I am truly sorry to have to write this review, but people who go looking for more from the author of the Provincial Lady should be warned.

Fascinating

What a difference between a century ago and today. Now it's about attending the right school and getting a career of prestige. Parents and society have pretty much given up on marriage as ones ultimate goal in life. Thank goodness, love can be so unpredictable, but education rarely is. This book was cleverly written to expose the worst fallacies of the pursuit of anything but happiness, even though that's what it's ending was titled.

About the Author

Amanda L. Golbeck is professor of biostatistics and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She served in a variety of leadership roles from department chair to vice president and academic dean at four academic institutions. She currently teaches courses in public health administration and management and public health leadership, and she is a member of the American Statistical Association president’s workgroup on developing training in statistical leadership. Dr. Golbeck is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a past president of the Caucus for Women in Statistics, and a country representative to the International Statistical Institute Committee on Women. She earned a BA from Grinnell College, followed by MA degrees in anthropology and statistics, and a Ph.D in biostatistics from the University of California at Berkeley. She also earned certificates in educational management at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, leadership at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Millennium Leadership Initiative, negotiation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and women in leadership at the American Academy of Neurology. Grinnell College, the Kansas Board of Regents, and the American Statistical Association have presented awards to her in recognition of her leadership.

Ingram Olkin is professor emeritus in statistics and education at Stanford University. He received a doctorate from the University of North Carolina, and before moving to Stanford, was on the faculties of Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota. He has written a number of books, and has served on editorial boards for statistical, educational, and mathematical journals. He has served as chair of the Committee of Applied and Theoretical Statistics, chair of the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Sciences (COPSS), and as president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Augsburg, a Lady Davis Fellow at Hebrew University, an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College, and received an honorary D.Sci from DeMontfort University. He received a Lifetime Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, and a Wilks Medal and a Founders Award from the American Statistical Association. For many years, he has been involved in the furtherance of women in statistics, for which he received the COPSS Elizabeth L. Scott Award.

Yulia R. Gel is professor in the Department of Mathematical Science at the University of Texas at Dallas. From 2004 to 2013 she was assistant/associate professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where she started upon completion of her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington. She earned her Ph.D in mathematics from Saint-Petersburg State University, Russia. She held visiting positions at Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, and University of California, Berkeley, USA. She was vice president for membership and outreach of the International Society on Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS) and is currently the treasurer of the International Environmetrics Society (TIES). She is also a member of the Committee on Women in Statistics of the International Statistical Institute, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and a recipient of the Abdel El-Shaarawi Young Researcher’s Award in environmental statistics.

About the Author

James M. Van Verth is a software engineer at Google, where he works on GPU support for the Skia 2D Graphics Library. He has worked for Insomniac Games, NVIDIA, and Red Storm Entertainment and, for the past 17 years, he has been a regular speaker at GDC, teaching the tutorials "Math for Game Programmers" and "Physics for Game Programmers." He received a BA in math/computer science from Dartmouth College, an MS in computer science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an MS in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lars M. Bishop is an engineer in the Handheld Developer Technologies group at NVIDIA. Prior to joining NVIDIA, he was the chief technology officer at Numerical Design Limited, leading the development of the Gamebryo3D cross-platform game engine. He received a BS in math/computer science from Brown University and an MS in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I really wish it to be mandatory to read that when they were students...

Amazing book but not perfect, one thing missing

This book is truly amazing, it covers everything in such detail that you can write your own graphics api by the end of it , seriously one of the best programming books ever written!!!!! Such precision such formality such details , there is only one thing that is missing and that is exercises to test your knowledge at the end of each chapter

An Amazon Best Book of August 2015: Susan Casey’s Voices in the Ocean opens with a near perfect set piece about a swim she once took in Maui. Her father had died two years prior, and she was still struggling with her feelings over the loss. Casey wades out at dusk for a solo ocean swim. The weather is bad and sharks have recently been seen in the area—but, Casey writes, “a strange thing happens when your worst nightmare is realized: nothing much is left to scare you.” Rather than something bad happening to her, she suddenly finds herself, mid-swim, surrounded by spinner dolphins. It is one of those rare moments of real awe, and the experience launches her book and, more importantly, her fascination with dolphins, which leads Casey on a globe-trotting trek around the world to study dolphins, porpoises, and whales. She begins by contacting a woman named Ocean, a New Age believer in the power of the dolphin; in Casey’s words, Ocean entertains “Star Trekian views about dolphins acting as teachers and visionaries and emissaries from other dimensions.” From there Casey expands her research to cover pioneering dolphin studies, human-dolphin encounters, dolphin and whale hunting (which still happens), and the cultural significance of dolphins going back centuries. Eye Opening and Disturbing

The title of this book is a little misleading. The author does indeed go swimming with wild dolphins in the book, but the book is more about the atrocities people commit against them. There are sections of the book dealing with the intelligence, social aspects, and communication of dolphins. For most of the book though the author is tracing various abuses, from early research to Japans' dolphin slaughter, to the Solomon Islands dolphin slaughter, to dolphin captures, and captive animals. I admire the authors' willingness to travel to these places and report on these things first hand, she is providing a valuable service in doing so.

I had a hard time reading this book, growing up I enjoyed watching Flipper, and visiting Seaworld as a child. Realizing I was aiding in the abuses discussed in the book really struck home. I would strongly recommend reading this book if you are an animal lover, or would like to learn more about the human impact on dolphins.

A writer shares her sense of personal connection to dolphins

I am a bit of an amateur naturalist, as well as a life long student of the biological sciences, and I requested this book thinking it was a scientific discussion of dolphins and their relationship to humankind. While there is a fair bit of science presented, most of it is not particularly new; the focus here is not so much on the science of dolphins, or their relationship to humans, but rather the author's personal journey, discovering how dolphins are treated and mistreated, her personal reactions to these stories, and her experiences swimming with dolphins. When Casey does touch on the science she tends to get it wrong; she makes much of the fact that humans and dolphins share in common a type of neuron calls a spindle neuron, though she refers to them by a much less common name, von Economo neurons. She cites this commonality as evidence of the intelligence of dolphins, probably as she is unaware that they're also found in many whales and in elephants. Spindle neurons are not, by themselves, a sign of high intelligence, but rather an evolutionary adaptation to large brains.

If you enjoy books detailing personal stories of growth and spiritual connections with animals and nature, this may be a good book for you. The reader looking for science and new discoveries about our cetacean relatives would be well advised to look elsewhere.

Worthwhile, but if you only read one book about the ocean, whales and dolphins, there are other books that are better written.

I really enjoyed Casey's previous two books "The Devils Teeth" and "The Wave" and would offer a 4-star or 5-star review of these two books. For me, this book felt like several independent stories that never flowed into a book and overall, the writing felt disjointed - the author wrote about what she found to be most interesting or experienced herself. The stories in this book about dolphin killing and captivity really need to be told and sections were interesting. However, the author's presence over-dominated sections of the book and took away from the characters and animals she encountered. If you have the time and energy to read only one book about whales and the ocean, this is not the book I would recommend.

For those who found this book interesting, I suggest reading "War of the Whales" where the personalities of the scientists and lawyers trying to save the whales really shone through in their amazing efforts and sacrifices to defend our oceans against the US navies careless use of sonar. I also learned more about whales/dolphins in "War of the Whales" compared to the Casey book. Other books that are really excellent about the ocean and high profile ocean animals are Carl Safina's "Song for the Blue Ocean" (first choice recommendation), "Eye of the Albatross" and "Voyage of the Turtle" (to read if you enjoyed Song of the Blue Ocean).

Any book that gets people to care more our oceans and the animals that live in them is very worthwhile.

About the Author
José Ingenieros (1877, Palermo (Italia)-1925, Buenos Aires) Su nombre original era Giuseppe Ingegneri. Fue médico, psiquiatra, psicólogo, farmacéutico, escritor, docente, filósofo y sociólogo. En 1892, tras terminar sus estudios secundarios, fundó el periódico La Reforma. Hacia 1893, estudió en la Facultad de Medicina de Buenos Aires, de la que se graduó en 1897 de farmacéutico y en 1900 de médico. Ingenieros fue un miembro relevante de la Cátedra de Neurología y del Servicio de Observación de Alienados de la Policía de la Capital, el cual llegó a dirigir. Entre 1902-1913 dirigió los archivos de Psiquiatría y Criminología y se hizo cargo del Instituto de Criminología de la Penitenciaría Nacional de Buenos Aires, alternando su trabajo con conferencias en universidades europeas. En 1908 ocupó la Cátedra de Psicología Experimental en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Ese año fundó la Sociedad de Psicología. Ingenieros terminó sus estudios en las universidades de París, Ginebra, Lausana y Heidelberg. Sus ensayos sociológicos El hombre mediocre y ensayos críticos y políticos, Hacia una moral sin dogmas, Las fuerzas morales tuvieron un gran influencia en el ámbito universitario de Argentina. En 1914 José Ingenieros se casó con Eva Rutenberg en Lausana, Suiza. Tuvieron cuatro hijos, Delia, Amalia, Julio y Cecilia. Hacia 1919 renunció a todos los cargos docentes y comenzó hacia 1920 su etapa política, participando de manera activa en favor del grupo Claridad, de tendencia comunista. Unos años después propuso la formación de la Unión Latinoamericana, una organización que difundió sus ideas antiimperialistas. En 1925, poco antes de morir fundó la revista Renovación, en la que escribió con los pseudónimos de Julio Barreda Lynch y de Raúl H. Cisneros. Ingenieros se distanció del socialismo de Estado y empezó a colaborar con periódicos anarquistas, varias de sus obras literarias reflejan este acercamiento. Murió el 31 de octubre de 1925, a los cuarenta y ocho años.

A must for every adolescent and adult to read!

I have read El Hombre Mediocre by Jose Ingenieros when I was 13 years old and it has changed by life to a most excellent life. Of all the books I have read, I believe that El Hombre Mediocre, The Road Less Traveled, and The Art of Loving, and others like it should be read by every adolescent and young adult before they embarke on their journey through life. They are great guidelines and helpful in excellent decision making throughout life. Has there been a translation of El Hombre Mediocre to English and of The Road Less Traveled and the Art of Loving to Spanish and other languages? I would like to recommend the book to persons speaking other languages also.

Fantastic!

Excellent book! Jose Ingenieros teaches us about life, people and society. He vews our world through a different and interesting way. The qualities of man are enphasised when he talks about mediocare man. A great lesson for those who have the opportunity to read this book.

Not an easy read..a lot of advanced spanish words...

I am panamanian , and Spanish is my native language, nevertheless the reading of this book has not been easy for me ..As Jose Ingenieros uses lots of semantic variations of Spanish and some archaic language , I had to read it with a dictionary on my left hand to finish it. Jose describes his ideas about what is virtue , and why humankind has been driven towards mediocre behaviors and attitudes. He examines from the perspective of the beginning of the 20th century at Argentina, the last part of the books describes many Argentines geniuses ..Ameghino description of his lifework was my favorite.

People who live with a definite chief aim and try their best to attain it are not mediocre , while people who only wonder around life are mediocre what a simple definition....

Excellent study companion with step-by-step lessons and practices

I like the For Dummies book series in general since they are written in a non-intimidating way to provide instructional guidance for readers new to the subjects covered. The publisher is apparently now expanding into the textbook arena with the new "U Can" series. With this in mind, I ordered this book for my son who is taking Physics I at school this year, hoping that it would provide instructional guidance for him in a more friendly approach.

My son actually found this book to be extremely useful. It helps him review and reinforce the understanding of key concepts in step-by-step lessons augmented by clear examples and drill practices. The book is organized into bite-sized, key concepts that are easy to digest and absorb. Each concept is explained and illustrated in details, with tips and important notes to remember. This is immediately followed by example questions & answers to clarify the concept, and then by practice questions & answers to drill on.

Overall, this is a great resource for students who may need assistance with their Physics I. The course topics are broken into individual lessons with clear content review, along with step-by-step examples and practice problems to help the students understand and retain each concept. It is a textbook written in non-textbook style that is non-intimidating and easy to study with.

WOW! If only everything were taught like this

I loved Physics in High School. If you don’t use it, you lose it. The book is a reminder of how much I’ve forgotten the details or formulas even though I’ve used virtually all the various concepts of Physics as an adult.

The book defines the terms as you begin each chapter. It talks you through the concept and then explains how the formula is derived at. Practical tests to see if you understand what you’ve just read are followed by how the correct answer was arrived at. I wonder why this approach isn’t used in more public schools.
