Darwin's Women of Mother Earth: 'Know the Truth!', by Lucy Farmer

For thousands of years, humans have sought to connect with powerful universal energies and solve life's problems by tapping into the spiritual realm. Given the recent popularity of meditation, positive thinking, law-of-attraction, and all sorts of therapy techniques, this urge remains as strong as ever. But what if you've tried every book on the self-help shelf and have yet to see a positive change? As an experienced scientist who has also endured a number of personal struggles as a woman, author Lucy Farmer spent years searching for the answers that would allow her to find healing, love happiness, and peace. But in the course of sorting through life's lessons, she came across something even more amazing--a solution that would draw upon her scientific background and apply it in a spiritual way. Lucy Farmer, Scientist, reveals our genetic link to Divine Source and the solutions for peaceful evolution! Darwin's Women of Mother Earth is an autobiographical account of Farmer's experiences, as well as a guidebook for this life-changing journey. Using a combination of neuroscience, genetics, and spiritual principles, this inspirational read will help women (and men) of all ages achieve a higher state of consciousness with the help of the feminine gifts of compassion and heart energies--as well as a direct connection to Mother Earth. Lucy Farmer suggests - "The dark (the ego) does not lead any of us to communicating with the One great Divine Source that we all call G.D!  It never can and never will - It cannot! - the One great Universal Source is full of ONLY unconditional love, compassion, loving-kindness, light, positivity, purity and peace! - it does not have any other elements within!" Lucy, personally likes to call G.D the Universal Source as this has non-connotational tendencies and removes the ego traits from negative religious competition and power struggles - the ego traits that stop positive, peaceful evolution! In other words, to connect to the Universal Source we must first return to purity of the mind - the rest, as you will discover are the tools of modern mind-science!

“The only thing that this so-called women’s shelter does is to foster disharmony in otherwise harmonious households here in Cabot Cove. For the Cabot Cove town government to be providing financial support to it is a travesty, a prime example of the misuse of taxpayer funds.”

The speaker was Richard Mauser, owner of a metal-fabricating factory in an industrial park alongside the Cabot Cove River, and an elected member of the town council. Mauser, age sixty, was a bombastic naysayer whose fiery speeches during council meetings were often the butt of jokes for those in attendance, but this didn’t deter him from offering his opinion on anything and everything. He was a large man with a shock of copper-colored hair fringed with gray, and whose suits—he always wore a suit and tie to meetings—tended to be a size too small for his bulky frame. His white dress shirts pressed into the folds of his neck, and his face reddened whenever he took the floor and railed against whatever was being considered, shouting down those who disagreed with his positions and disparaging anyone who dared challenge him.

This night was no different.

I’d had a previous engagement and hadn’t planned on attending the meeting, but when I heard that renewing funding for the women’s shelter would be on the agenda, I canceled my plans. Now I sat in the front row along with Edwina Wilkerson, a former social worker at the hospital and a friend of many years, who’d spearheaded the establishment of the shelter two years earlier. Edwina was one of those women who seemed to be in perpetual motion, and her wiry frame attested to her active life. She was coiled like a snake as Mauser spoke; I was ready to grab her should she leap up and attack the man.

“We’ve been sold a bill of goods,” Mauser shouted, “told by the usual do-gooders in town that we even need a shelter for”—he paused and smirked—“for the fair sex. Well, let me tell you the facts. Let me differentiate between reality and fancy. The only thing the women’s shelter accomplishes is to give women an excuse for leaving their hardworking husbands and adding to the divorce statistics. You want to talk about family values? I’ll tell you about family values, and this shelter isn’t it. Now, frankly, I don’t give a damn whether these do-gooders want to run a shelter and pay for it out of their own pockets or collect donations from anyone they can hoodwink, but Cabot Cove has no business allocating funds to help sustain this travesty of morality.” He glared at our mayor, Jim Shevlin, who sat with a small smile on his lips. Jim had had to put up with Mauser’s mad rants for the years that he’d been mayor, and I admired him for his calm patience.

Mauser ran out of steam and sat heavily in his chair.

“That man is a heart attack waiting to happen,” Dr. Seth Hazlitt, who sat on the other side of me, muttered.

“The man is despicable” was Edwina’s whispered editorial comment in my ear.

“We’ve heard from Mr. Mauser,” Mayor Shevlin said. “Let’s open the discussion and hear other viewpoints.”

Edwina quickly got to her feet. “First of all,” she said, “I deeply resent the way Dick Mauser has characterized me and others associated with the shelter as do-gooders who are out to hoodwink donors. The fact is that the shelter provides a much-needed haven for women and their children who have been subjected to domestic abuse. Whatever funds the town contributes to the shelter each year help save lives, something that can’t be said for Mr. Mauser’s plant, which pollutes our river and threatens lives.”

Mauser stood and shook a finger at Edwina as he boomed, “I won’t allow this meeting to turn into a forum for the dissemination of lies and character slurs.”

“Sit down, Dick,” Mayor Shevlin said. “You’ve had your say. Now it’s Ms. Wilkerson’s turn to have hers. Ms. Wilkerson, please confine your comments to the subject at hand.”

Edwina gave an impassioned defense of the shelter and the need for it. When she was finished, the mayor asked whether anyone else wished to address the subject. I was about to stand, but Seth Hazlitt was on his feet and facing the forty or so people who’d attended the hearing. The room was silent as one of our town’s leading citizens took the floor.

“First of all,” he said, “I’ve been one of those people who, some say, have been ‘hoodwinked’ into donating money to the shelter—and I’ve done so with pride, and intend to donate more. Now, I know where people who oppose the shelter are coming from. There are folks, and well-meanin’ ones, I might add, who view having a women’s shelter as sayin’ something negative about the town they’ve grown up in. But let’s face the facts. Cabot Cove is no longer a sleepy little town bypassed by the problems larger cities have. Sure, we’re still blessed compared to lots of other places. Our problems are relatively minimal. But that doesn’t mean we can sweep ’em under the rug. And unfortunately domestic abuse is one of these problems. I’m not sayin’ it’s an epidemic, but it exists, and anyone who denies it has blinders on. Mayor Shevlin and the council are doin’ the right thing by supporting the shelter despite Mr. Mauser’s protests.”

There was a smattering of applause as Seth sat. I patted his arm. Although doctor-patient confidentiality prohibited Seth from naming names, he had confided in me that a few of his patients were women who’d been abused, and said that he’d even treated a man whose wife had the habit of striking out at him physically, causing bruises as well as humiliation. Seth said the man was grappling with intense shame at having been hit by a woman, even though he hadn’t provoked her attacks, nor had he responded in kind.

The mayor called for a vote on whether to provide funding for the shelter for the upcoming year. The measure passed with Richard Mauser the lone “nay” on the council. He grabbed the briefcase that sat next to him and stormed from the room, muttering under his breath.

“That man!” Edwina exclaimed.

“Just your typical, run-of-the-mill blowhard” was Seth’s evaluation. “Coffee, anyone?”

The three of us went to Mara’s, on the dock, where Edwina and I asked for decaf lattes, a new offering by the town’s favorite eating establishment. Seth specified a cup of regular coffee—“I never did understand this latte business,” he said—and added a slice of lemon meringue pie to his order.

“Well,” I said to Edwina, raising my cup to her, “we have something to celebrate: another year of funding for the shelter.”

“No thanks to our favorite council member,” she said.

“Forget him,” said Seth. “Likes to hear himself talk.”

“He’s so self-righteous.”

“The pie is delicious,” Seth said. “Anyone like a taste?”

We declined.

I deliberately shifted the topic of conversation from the shelter to less contentious subjects, and Edwina calmed down. As we stepped out into the cold, humid March night air, she thanked Seth and me for our support. “I’ll see you tomorrow night?” she asked me.

“I’ll be there,” I said. As a member of the shelter’s board, I’d volunteered to be on hand one evening a week in case anyone walked in seeking services.

Later that night, as the final scenes of the original black-and-white version of Brief Encounter—the Technicolor remake for television starring Sophia Loren and Richard Burton was, in my humble opinion, dreadful—faded out and THE END came up on the screen, I reflected on the events of that evening and my involvement in them.

The Cabot Cove women’s shelter had been founded two years earlier. While Edwina was the public face of the committee formed to establish the refuge for abused women, it had been Seth Hazlitt’s brainchild. The genesis of the idea had surfaced at a dinner party at my house attended by Seth; Edwina; our sheriff, Mort Metzger; his wife, Maureen; and a few other friends. Seth had cited statistics he’d recently read—twenty-five million American women are the victims of domestic violence each year, resulting in more than two thousand homicides. Mort reminded us of a murder that had taken place only one year earlier in the next town down the coast: A drunken husband had killed his wife in the midst of a violent argument.

“I heard that their cops knew something was going on,” Mort said.

“Well, couldn’t they do anything?” his wife asked.

“They answered a couple of calls, but the wife, she always refused to press charges. Their hands were tied.”

“How awful,” Maureen said.

“The point is,” said Seth, “Cabot Cove isn’t immune from domestic violence. Seems to me that it might be time for setting up a place here where women can come if they need to escape trouble at home.”

“Unfortunately, I know someone who would benefit from such a place,” Edwina said. “Her husband treats her like chattel. He’s always putting her down in front of others, and I’m certain that he’s hurt her more than once when she stood up for herself. I won’t mention any names, but some of you certainly know her. Of course, she’s too proud or ashamed or scared to allow the truth to come out, stays at home so her friends won’t see the marks he left on her.”

The topic had been bounced around for another hour, until it was time for my guests to leave. As Edwina was on her way out, she’d turned to me and asked, “Would you be interested in joining a committee I’m going to form to get us a women’s shelter right here in Cabot Cove?”

“Count me in,” I’d said.

And so I became part of Edwina’s tenacious drive to raise private funding and to persuade the town council to back the plan financially. She was successful. The Cabot Cove women’s shelter became reality. Edwina immersed herself in domestic violence counseling courses, and an anonymous donor put up enough money to purchase a small house in an area zoned for commercial use—even I didn’t know where it was. The location was kept secret, or as secret as possible, to avoid having an irate husband arrive on its doorstep in search of a wife who’d run from his abuse. I did know that three women and their children were currently residing there until they could move on to something more permanent. Two were from Cabot Cove, but the third had come from a village down the coast, having been reluctant to involve her friends in her troubles, and fearing that her husband would be able to track her down too easily if she remained in her hometown. An office was leased in town as the public face of the shelter, where women could drop in for an initial consultation, solace, and advice. The office was staffed by a cadre of volunteers, yours truly included. Private donations coupled with a yearly sum from the town’s operating budget kept things afloat, along with funds allocated by the state legislature, a federal stipend dispensed under the Congressional Victims of Crime Act, and, later, increased funding when the federal Violence Against Women Act was passed in Congress.

Cabot Cove was late in joining the statewide network of shelter programs for those who are abused, primarily because people were hesitant to acknowledge that such things existed in our tranquil small town. But Maine had recognized it as a serious problem as far back as 1973, and the movement to address domestic violence really picked up momentum in 2000 when then governor Angus King declared violence against women and children “Maine’s Public Enemy Number One” in his State of the State Address. He dramatized his remarks by pointing to seats in the hall that had deliberately been left empty to represent those who’d been killed by domestic abusers.

I turned off the TV and climbed into bed. A feeling of well-being swept over me. As I often do, I thought about how fortunate I was to live in a place like Cabot Cove and to have so many wonderful friends. The town’s strong sense of community has always been alive and well, and the establishment of the shelter is but one example of that spirit of reaching out to the less fortunate and more vulnerable.

My final thought as I closed my eyes and allowed sleep to wash over me was that life was good in Cabot Cove. I had no reason to think otherwise.

Book is confused whether it is a novel or public service announcement
By snowy
It could have been possible to use the detective novel as a vehicle to promote awareness of domestic abuse and the help available, but the writer did not do a good job meshing the two themes together.

I was rather irked that the normally competent sheriff did not think of conducting gunshot residue tests on the "persons of interest" - that oversight is fatal for the novel to make it as a good detective story. Either the writer forgot or had to omit it as he could not think of how that would prevent the case from being solved too quickly.

As a vehicle for promoting awareness of domestic abuse, the book confined itself largely to repeating usual materials from publicity brochures or websites. What is starkly missing is the personalisation of the abuse itself - which is hard to do when the victim and the victim's families were severely limited in telling their stories.

Classic Jessica!
By Leo
I was at first reticent to buy this, even though I have read and own all the previous books in the series. I read many reviews saying that the issue of domestic violence was dominating the story. I have just finished the book and I can say that personally I think this is one of the best mystery in the series! The characters, story, plot, narrative, etc were all very well executed. I did not feel lectured on the issue of domestic violence at all and did not find it overbearing.

If you liked the previous books in the series, you will certainly like this one! Do not miss out.

Not the usual Murder She Wrote
By Cat288
I normally pick up a new book in the Murder She Wrote Series and keep reading until I reach the end. I kept putting this one down and had little interest in picking it up. I am not certain I can say why this book didn't work at all for me. It felt disjointed. I won't try to give any details about the plot because it didn't hold my interest enough. I am certain someone else will outline the story in their review. Maybe the topic, maybe the approach to the story. Something just didn't work. I was disappointed.

Great Addition to Any at Home Telescope!
By Meagan Adams
We purchased this book to use with and to help us gain more benefits from our telescope. Before purchasing this book we had only used the software that came with the telescope, which was great but this book helped open more doors. Although this book is not packed full it pictures it is definitely not lacking in the information department. I loved how this book highlights the history and the story behind each of the 50 celestial bodies. It also gives you the visibility of each based on a 5 point scale and will tell you the season for which it is best to see each particular celestial body. This book is different from others due to it being based more on the origin and history. Most telescope books tell you where in the sky you can find certain bodies but me being the history buff I am I love knowing more behind the bodies other than where they are located. Finding out how, when, where, and why they came to be is more than half the fun and this book does a great job at outlining and painting that picture for you. If you have an at home telescope this is definitely one book you will be happy you added to your collection! *I received this product free/discounted in exchange for my review. My reviews are completely honest and 100% my own.*

Good book aimed at beginners of astronomy, but needs a bit more info and guides.
By Chan
This is a nice book that is helpful for those just getting into astronomy with a a telescope. The book is a list of 50 top celestial bodies and objects to view with a telescope and the information in this book does a good job of introducing those objects. With details of visibility, descriptions, directions to find them, significance, origin, and some pop trivia, it's a concise and not too wordy summary to get one interested without being overwhelmed. If your interested is piqued for more in-depth information and knowledge, you can always do additional research on your own at your local library or online.

While being aimed at those new to the world of astronomy and telescope viewing, this book falls short in the area of directions and guiding readers in finding the celestial objects. The book uses constellations as the point of reference in it's directions. A chapter introducing all the constellations referenced in the directions with additional pictures and diagrams of the constellations would be extremely beneficial to the reader. Coordinates and more detailed directions would be helpful as well in assisting or training the new astronomer.

The book includes some stunning color pictures and I feel it would definitely benefit from more pictures of the celestial bodies being included in correspondence with the related chapter. Don't get me wrong, this is a good introductory book and it gets a solid 4 stars from me, but with additional diagrams, pictures, and with more fleshed out instructions I would give this book 5 stars(Sol, Betelgeuse, Rigel, Sirius, Arcturus).

I received a copy of this Astronomy with a Home Telescope book for an honest and unbiased review.

astronomy
By Tessa H
I'm not super impressed with this book. I think it means well but it lacks so much. It does cover lots of different things you find it the night sky and covers some neat back ground stories. I just dont see how it is actually helping you identify half of these "50 celestial bodies" you would def have to have prior knowledge of constellations and the placement of other stars and planets in the sky before this book could actually help you find the 50 celestial bodies. I mean it's a good read but it seriously lacks actual useful information on how to. A neat to know book but so not a how to book.
I recieved this book at a discount to read and review.

Mothere's Perspective
By Jan Smith
As seen from a mother's point of view, I was made to understand the hardships and persecution against her family & their followers from a different angle and agree they suffered unfairly & unjustly..
Joseph Smith Senior & Junior should have been arrested on their own actions, thrown in jail and left there. . Needless other people would not have had to suffer from this apparently smart but physcotic family unit. It reminds me so of the Daivd Karash fiasco in Texas.

About the Author
Our location in the Wisconsin northwoods helps keep Willow Creek Press off the publishing world's radar. Around here, we're more accustomed to landing walleyes and muskies than big books and authors - events hardly worthy of note in Publisher's Weekly. But, a few years ago we did get noticed with the release of Just Labs, a unique and colorful tribute to Labrador retrievers. The book quickly became a bestseller (now with 300,000 copies in print) and frankly startled us with its success. We were not surprised for long, however, and now an entire line of popular Willow Creek Press titles evokes the myriad joys of dog and cat ownership. Today we are known for these high-quality, light-hearted books and feature over 40 such titles in a continually-expanding line.

A Skye Full of Stars: Book 2 of the Gannon Family Series, by J.C. Wing

Life is good in the small, coastal town of Kelby, Alabama. The days are busy and satisfying, if not a touch predictable, but change is in the air. Spring is coming, and it’s bringing with it more than tourist season.

When Cheney receives word that a package with her name on it has been found by a family friend near Glasgow, she decides to take Meara back to Scotland with her to retrieve it. Together, the sisters discover surprising evidence of an unknown life led by their father long before either one of them was born.

Noah’s happy life is shaken when her father falls ill, and the mother who abandoned her ten years before reappears with news that makes Noah question everything she thought she knew. Things are further set off kilter when Noah’s childhood crush, Keene, drives into town with all of his belongings packed into his truck…everything, that is, except his wife.

A Skye Full of Stars takes readers from war torn Scotland, where the Gannon family tree first took root, to the modern day southern shores of Alabama’s gulf coast. It’s a story about how blood isn’t always what it takes to build a family.

Wing has a way of making you feel as if you know these characters and must continue to read to find out what will unfold next for them. She has a flair for exploring different relationships and threading them together into a cohesive story line. Her descriptions make characters and settings seem real. I can taste the food, smell Noah's hair products and see Jolly's silly t-shirts. I want to go to Scotland for a stained glass creation from Heather and Moss. This is a great sequel to Alabama Skye. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!LCT - Evergreen, Colorado

From the Inside Flap
From war torn Scotland, where the Gannon family tree first took root, to the modern day southern shores of Alabama's Gulf Coast, a Skye Full of Stars is a story about the importance of family, and about how blood isn't always what it takes to make the strongest bonds.

About the Author
J.C. is a Colorado native but has been fortunate enough to have lived in both North Carolina as well as southwest Germany. An avid reader, J.C. enjoys all different genres including YA, mystery/thriller, fiction and some horror. Her favorite, however, is southern literature. Her most beloved book of all time is Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and while she is a loyal follower of many different authors, James Lee Burke sits at the top of her list. J.C. fills most of her time homeschooling her two children (who are also avid readers) and jotting down the countless ideas for story lines that fill her head. Her first novel, The Color of Thunder, was published in December of 2012. Her second novel, and the first in The Gannon Family series, Alabama Skye was published in June, 2014. The second book, A Skye Full of Stars will be released in August of 2015. The third and final book of the series, Under a Southern Skye will follow soon after. Among the many projects that keep J.C. busy is another trilogy called The Goddess of Tornado Alley. This is a humorous story which features the Greek goddess Aphrodite and one of her unlucky in love mortal descendants. J.C. is also tackling a historical fiction novel, this one of a more serious nature, titled Red Beard and the Ravens. This tale will be based on the lives of the German emperor Frederick Barbarossa and his family.

Another Great Read!
By Elizabeth Woodrum
I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in The Gannon Family Series. Having read the first, it was nice to step back into the same literary world for a while.

Wing's style is very descriptive and really grabbed my attention from the beginning. There were hints of conflict to come from the very opening lines. I am glad the author did a nice job of setting up this second story for the reader, but not with so much exposition that it became monotonous. One thing that can drive me crazy as a reader is when I feel like I'm being retold things I already know from previous books. It's nice to have a well-constructed refresher that doesn't retell the entire previous story.

While my preferred genre tends to be fantasy, I do step out of my comfort zone occasionally and read something that is more realistic. So, I made another exception for Wing as I enjoyed the first story so much. I was rewarded with wonderfully real, fully developed characters. It's always great when you can forget that the people are fictional and just go along for the ride with them. The dialogue is realistic as are the characters' reactions to the events as they unfold. But, I think the greatest strength of the author, or perhaps just the thing I mostly noticed, is the descriptive detail of the settings. I was always able to vividly imagine where the characters were. I especially enjoyed when Cheney and Meara went to Scotland. I've never been, but would love to go someday. However, I do feel that it was a realistic representation. It's obvious the author put in some effort during her research and didn't rely on a Wikipedia article or two.

I enjoyed the story, even needing a few tissues on occasion. There were some surprises, which is saying a lot coming from me. Part of the reason I usually read fantasy novels is because I am too good at figuring out the twists in realistic fiction. It makes it much less fun. But, Wing caught me by surprise, which was...a nice surprise.

A pleasant read
By Tracey Madeley
A sprawling family saga of woman, business and relationships. Two parallel stories held together by a family connection. Cheney, Meera and Jack go to Scotland to learn about their father and Noah, Nate and Keene deal with her dad’s illness and the fall-out from this.

Switching between these two storylines can be a little jarring in places – Noah and Keene’s picnic appears to come to a sudden end at the close of the chapter and then the storey moves somewhere else.

There is some superfluous detail, especially in the beginning. The reader does not need to know where Noah sourced her furniture for the salon, only that she is successful. Equally Cheney’s little anecdotes about the Scottish bridge add nothing to the storyline. In contrast, the Clydebank Blitz is woven into the narrative and is important as it relates directly to one of the characters.

As a character Cheney is distinguished by her strange way of talking. Travelling back to Scotland to retrieve her father’s possessions makes her backward looking and reflective. In contrast Noah has her salon, the potential of a new relationship and her father’s future well-being to consider. I like the fact that Stella as a character is so dysfunctional and breaks up the image of the happy blended family.

The novel is held together by the tension of the unknown rather than a source of conflict. We want to learn what Cheney’s dad left her and if Noah’s father will be all right.

Both father and daughter relationships are resolved at the end, leaving the door open for Noah to pursue a romantic relationship in the future.

An Atmospheric Southern Classic
By turnerpage
A Skye Full of Stars is, on the one hand a story about the strength of family ties, but at the same time it explores the very notion of family. What I took from it was that a sense of belonging is perhaps more important in defining who we are, than who we happen to be related to.

The opening lines grab the reader's attention immediately and hook us right in, in this sequel to Alabama Skye. It's the story of the extended Gannon family. Where that book concentrated on the story of Cheney and Meara, here we see Noah's character developed and through her, delve deep into the complex world of mother-daughter relationships. This book is darker than the first, and it is this, that makes it an even stronger book.

The Scottish section with the historical references to the Glasgow/Clydebank regions, particularly how they suffered during the bombing of the second world war were thoroughly researched, with just the right balance of fact and story. For me, my favourite setting in the book is the Alabama sections, as the writing is so assured, that I assumed that JC was writing about an area she had grown up in, and had to come from the South.

JC Wing's strengths are her characterisations, her adept storytelling skills and her ability to create a fully-realised story world. The weaving together of the Noah and Cheney stories has been astutely crafted, with the two storylines brought together for the nail-biting dramatic finish. Without giving too much away, the ending evoked Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief, for this reader.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The $1,000 Genome: The Revolution in DNA Sequencing and the New Era of Personalized Medicine, by Kevin Davies

Since the conclusion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, scientists have been racing towards a grand goal: offering individuals a decoding of their complete genetic makeup for just $1,000. As Kevin Davies reveals in this exquisitely reported account, the $1,000 genome will be a reality by 2011 and it will usher in a whole new era of personalized, genomic medicine. Capable of presenting much more advanced information than the current crop of cheek-swab services, the $1,000 complete genome raises some extraordinary possibilities. We will be able to learn if we have genes that predispose us to a host of diseases, and to take a wide range of preventative measures. Drug companies may be able to create versions of drugs tailored specifically to our individual DNA. But we may also face the psychological burden of learning that we have the gene for an incurable disease, such as Parkinson’s.

Acclaimed author Kevin Davies introduces the pioneers of this medical revolution and probes deeply into both the medical benefits and ethical issues of personal genetic testing, also exploring the psychological complexities of learning one’s DNA results, based on both his own experience of being tested and that of a number of others. The $1,000 Genome is an indispensable guide to the new era of personalized medicine.

Review
Once only a subject for science fiction movies, whole genome sequencing is rapidly becoming a reality for the masses. So, what does this mean for you?... Davies does a commendable job of answering that question.
--The Spittoon (spittoon.23andme.com)

Kevin Davies' The $1,000 Genome deserves to be widely read... It presents a careful and I think entertaining view of the past and possible future of personal genomics. --Keith Robison -- "Omics! Omics" (omicsomics.blogspot.com)

In this informative and accessible work of scientific journalism, Englishman Kevin Davies predicts that personalized genome sequencing will soon become so affordable that it will revolutionize medicine. --Winnipeg Free Press

``The great impact of a new technology – from cotton underwear to the jet to the computer – comes not when it is invented, but when it becomes cheap enough to be within the reach of everybody. Gene sequencing has now reached that point. With unrivalled knowledge of the people who made this possible, Kevin Davies eloquently explains how it came about, and hints at what will come next.’’ (Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist)

From the Author
Although I've been writing about "the $1,000 genome" since 2002, it was two key events in 2007 that really sparked the concept for this book. The first was the presentation to Jim Watson in May of his digital genome sequence on a portable hard drive -- the first "personal genome" decoded using a new kind of DNA sequencing technology. Although the cost of Watson's genome was about $1 million, that was still a fraction of the $2.3 billion spent on the Human Genome Project.

The second was my first conversation with the co-founder of 23andMe, a pioneering consumer genomics company offering tantalizing personal genomic information at an affordable price (less than $1,000) to the public at large. Since then, tens of thousands of people have sent saliva samples to various consumer genomics firms. In a handful of cases, some recounted in the book, the results are nothing short of life-changing, and possibly life-saving.

Since 2007, the cost of genome sequencing has plummeted at an astonishing rate. Today, anyone can get their genome sequenced for less than $20,000, and that price will inevitably drop to $1,000 in the coming years as new technologies arrive. Imagine getting a full genome scan as easily and routinely as an MRI -- and without the claustrophobia! Even better, imagine a Star Trek Tricorder device reading your complete genetic code in a matter of minutes! That's a very real possibility in the next few years.

The bigger question, however, is whether that is going to make a difference to the health of yourself and your family? Having access to your full genome isn't magically going to reveal whether you're going to develop diabetes, cancer or heart disease, but it is going to become a fundamental part of your medical record. Among the challenges ahead of us discussed in the book: Will our genome data be kept private? Will we be subject to insurance or employment discrimination if we have our DNA sequenced? What can my genome really tell me about my disease risk? Who is going to explain that analysis to me -- not to mention my family doctor?

My intention in The $1,000 Genome isn't necessarily to answer all those questions, but to raise awareness of the rapidly approaching era of genome sequencing and increasingly personalized medicine. The technology will be with us very soon: the medical, legal and health care professions need to start preparing now. As should you!

reporting the real genome revolution
By Michael Gross
Back in 2000, when the draft sequence of "the" human genome was announced, hopes were high that a genetic understanding of common diseases would soon follow. This anticipated revolution in genomic medicine hasn't happened yet. However, a very different kind of revolution has happened, namely the development of fundamentally new and much more efficient methods to sequence huge amounts of DNA. As a consequence, the cost of sequencing a human genome has fallen faster than that of computer hardware. In order-of-magnitude terms, the first human genome (2000) cost around $ 1 billion, James Watson's (2007) $ 1 million, and this year many individual human genomes will be sequenced for not much more than $1000 per head.

This very real genome revolution has been underreported in the general media. Worse, it hasn't yet influenced the thinking of many medical professionals, even though it is bound to change the ways in which they will be able to prevent and treat disease. Kevin Davies, who has followed these developments closely as the editor of the magazine BioIT World and has interviewed many of the main protagonists over the years, now aims to popularise the new genome revolution in this very readable book.

Along with the progress in sequencing technology and personal genomes, Davies also covers the work of direct-to-consumer companies such as 23 and me, and also reports his own experience gained with these services. It emerges, however, that these companies are already at risk of becoming obsolete if they keep looking for simple answers from single base mutations (single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs) although the large-scale view of the complexity of entire genomes is becoming more and more important.

This is a well-informed and very accessible account of the fast-moving developments that will change medical and pharmaceutical world very soon. Naturally, it will become dated very soon, so read it now.

Disappointing -
By Loyd Eskildson
I'm a biology illiterate excited by the prospects of genetic research and future genetic engineering. I was hoping that Davies' book would educate me in the basics, especially since his day job involves editing a periodical on the topic and he has a PhD in the subject. Unfortunately, Davies' book didn't do it. "The $1,000 Genome" focuses more on the key companies and leaders in the field, than explaining what's happening to neophytes. (Articles such as "The $100 Genome" in the 4/17/2008 "Technology Review" are more helpful.) As a result, the material jumps from one approach to another, and lacks a simple, structured approach. I also didn't appreciate Davies' wild numbers in some instances - eg. the U.S. spending $5 trillion on 4 million with Alzheimers.

Davies should also have devoted much more space to BGI (formerly Beijing Genomics Institute), which with its 126 new top-of-the-range sequencing machines added to an existing 31 will have supposedly more DNA-sequencing capacity than the entire U.S. Also important is what it is likely to accomplish, at least in the area of human intelligence, an area that it is focusing on. (2,000 Chinese children will have their genes sampled, and the results correlated with their test scores at school - the largest examination to date of the idea that differences between individuals' IQ scores are partly due to DNA differences.)

Nonetheless, it is impossible not to be impressed by the speed of improvement in the field - from taking 13 years and $2.7 billion to decade the first human genome , to 14 days and $1,500 by 2009. That's improvement by a factor of 10/year, far faster than even Moore's Law (doubling the number of transistors on a chip every 12-18 months). (The problem is, however, that given how Davies switches from sampling to partial DNA to entire DNA analysis, the reader is never certain whether these comparisons involve apples to apples.)

I also didn't appreciate the time Davies devoted to ethics and privacy concerns, vs. outcomes and methods.

Profiles of Some People in the Sequencing Business
By Amazon Customer
The title of this review would be an alternative suggestion for the book title.

Don't read this looking to find more about sequencing technology or uses. The book has about the technical content of a USA today article.
Here's the full description of the rise of Curagen: "He invented a patented method for studying gene expression by looking up activity patterns in a database, which he dubbed "GeneCalling". Two sentences later the company "had raised some $600 million" and it's "estimated that his major investors each made $100 million". They made money by raising money? Or does the paragraph intend to say that Curagen was *sold* for $600M? Somebody paid $600M for a method of looking up patterns in a database? Really?

This is the book for you if you want descriptions of colorful characters and what they say about each other, reporting on parties and publicity events, anecdotes about genetic defects in the relatives of people involved in the companies, ethical issues in consumer sequencing, and other such human interest flotsam.

Not for you if you'd like to learn what the technology is and what can be done with it.
