An Idiosyncratic Yet Worthwhile Effort

As an engineer, I am always receptive to efforts to bridge the gap between art, culture, history, and technology.
And I am always nearly disappointed. Particularly egregious examples are the sad efforts to interpret particle physics with art, as in the case of "resident artists at CERN" or galleries of symbolic paintings of gluons at Stanford. The burden of failure to accomplishment this fusion must surely lie primarily with the artist, who rarely is tutored sufficiently in the demanding details of the science he/she is supposed to describe graphically or via the written word. It gets clumsy, awkward and inevitably acquires that comical aspect ascribed to "interpretive dance" by cynics.
Prelinger's work narrowly misses these shortcomings, and yet, in certain dimensions, rises to the level of admirable academic cultural analysis. The selection of art and photography that depicts the subject matter through time is extremely pithy and selective and would qualify as a fine art book in and of itself. They are artistically absorbing and evocative of the period they represent, qualifying in and of themselves as an education in the subject matter at hand.
Significant problems arise when Prelinger undertakes further deconstruction with a painfully contrived prose style very much in the "psychobabble mode", using arcane and arch language shabbily gilded with a faux academic patina reminiscent of of a pretentious first-year art student attempting to impress anyone who might overhear them at a coffeehouse. Yes, something did happen and it bears examining, but that can accomplished with a straightforward elucidation that bypasses the tedious pedantry imposed here.
The author also displays a considerable uncertainty about technology, waffling unsteadily at points and at other times simply being wholly incorrect - vacuum tubes are labelled as semiconductor technology, for instance. It is obvious she shrinks from a deeper technical comprehension in favor of an artistic interpretation. This is a pity, because the reader can sense Prelinger has the necessary intellectual chops to fully explore what must historically be the most influential shaping of the human consciousness by technology and its attendant media ever.

Having been exposed to such grave shortcomings, I nevertheless felt attracted to this book and certainly felt it can hold the informed reader's attention. If you can filter out the pseudo-chic posings of the literary style, there is some serious grist to be milled and, when the author finds surer footing, a very solid exposition unfolds that can lead the technical mind into areas of artistic inquiry that would normally be inaccessible. The treatment of punch cards, paper tape, magnetic tape, for example, and their representation in industrial art and advertising was eye-opening, and at times riveting. Intervals of sound and compelling critical interpretation appear at sufficient frequency throughout the book to command the reader's respect and hold their attention. The fundamental construction of the narrative often survives the inadvertently camp treatment and presents as a nice balance of rigor and deft artistic insight - the book unfolds with a smoothness similar to a nicely-engineered car travelling down a well-maintained highway with pleasant views to the left and right.

In summation, I can easily see technically-savvy denizens of the electronics culture, particularly those old enough to have personally experienced the earlier histories explored here, grousing unhappily at the numerous historical and scientific errors, frumping at the literary affectations and yet still persevering and ultimately concluding it was an informative and worthwhile read.

Technology through the lens of art: the graphical presentation of tubes, transistors, computers, & more

In this book, cultural historian Megan Prelinger surveys the visual presentation of advances in electronics. To study how increasingly abstract developments were given tangible form in order to convey them to businesses, workers in the field, and the general public is an ingenious and provocative idea. But reading the book provides a mixed experience.

Anyone who grew up learning about the scientific and technical developments she chronicles in her text is likely to trip repeatedly over her descriptions, and a reader who doesn’t already know may come away misinformed or confused. For instance, Prelinger speaks of vacuum tubes “sorting” electrons, when a better term would be controlling or modulating their flow, and she seems unclear on a few aspects of computers and programming. And yet the book’s bountiful illustrations are wondrous, almost flashback-inducing for anyone whose experience goes back very far. In her commentary, Prelinger now and then serves up bits of jargon, but she’s almost uniformly clear and insightful, helping the reader more fully to see and understand what one is looking at in the artwork.

The visual system makes up a substantial part of the human brain, and as ancient cave paintings suggest, our grasp of the world has always relied on our ability to represent it graphically. Yet the 20th century may be the first we could call the age of the image, as it was also the beginning of the electronic age. Despite its missteps, Prelinger’s act of visual archaeology in this book does a service to both.

You don’t need to be a philologist or an etymologist to become engrossed in this book on the "vulgar tongue," popular language and not crude or coarse talk. This is the classic of all classics. First published in 1785, this is a reprint of the third edition that appeared in 1931. It contains the fashionable words and favorite expressions of those olden days, many of which have endured to this day and others that have long since been abandoned. Who would ever think that a "damper" was a snack before dinner? On the other hand, some might agree that "poisoned" is an apt expression for "big with child." It is guaranteed that you will find much to chuckle over in this book when you come across such expressions as "belly cheat," which is defined as an apron. There are also terms that might very well match current practices, such as "whitewashed," which refers to "one who has taken the benefit of an act of insolvency to defraud his creditors." You won’t want to put this book down.

Dictionary of Slang

This work is one that I have found to be entertaining from several reads. This is definately not a sit down and plow through it book, but rather one can pick up and put down as needed. As a whole, I found in interesting from a perspective of much of what we consider normal everyday language these days was only a couple of hundred years ago considered the "ebonics" of the time. It does very much carry the tone and verbage of the day, which may disinterest some, but fans of Victorian, Edwardian, or Elizabethan period speech should adore this, as well those whom are interested in such through some of the more fanciful spin offs such as Steampunk fans.

I would say that this if you are looking for new (old) ways to spew forth vulgar phrases you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for phrases and even the occasional insult of Shakespearan wit, you can find more than a few gems within this book.

A classic now available in electronic format

Most students of the English language are familiar with the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue". Others will not be. It is not quite an obscure work but it does occupy a rather small niche. Although attributed to Francis Grose, the 1811 Dictionary is actually an updating of Grose' "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785). Grose died in 1791; the 1811 update was provided by a group of men who acknowledged Grose as the primary author.

Grose collected words and phrases used by the common people, i.e. the everyday speech of everyday folks. Thus "vulgar" in the title means "common" and not "dirty", "rude" or "nasty". The 1811 Dictionary includes language which was ignored by lexicographers. Most scholars of the time felt that such language was not worth recording or reporting. Grose and those who updated the dictionary in 1811 probably were motivated by amusement as much as by lexicography. That is, they found the speech of the "common folk" entertaining. There is no doubt that slang can be amusing but it is also often enlightening, e.g. by providing cultural or sociological insights. Regardless of the motivation of the compilers, the 1811 Dictionary is a useful work for students of English language and culture.

Those interested in the topic of American slang will find the work of Wentworth & Flexner interesting. Two particularly good volumes are Dictionary of American Slang Based on Historical Principles and Speaking Freely: A Guided Tour of American English from Plymouth Rock to Silicon Valley.

Great Entertainment

This is a dictionary, written by a british soldier just after the American Revolution, of slang terms. The word "vulgar" means slang, though some of them are vulgar. This book was banned in military camps at the time. This is a second edition which came out in 1811.

This book is hysterical, both educational and entertaining. It shows how normal people spoke over 200 years ago, and provides endless possibilities for insulting your friends. My friends and I are having a great time with it.

On a more serious note, it was recommended to me by the folks with whom I am a Revolutionary War reenactor, on the premise that I should learn to use some of these words.

Beautiful and allows for many details daily.

I am a substitute teacher and a bartender along with heavily volunteering locally, so needless to say, I need to write many details down daily in a planner. All of the other planners that offer what this one does were double the price and not nearly as pretty. The photos inside are beautiful and really will make me miss summer all Fall, Spring and Winter. The outside of the planner is wrapped in a plastic sleeve to protect it and I also slip little notes and reminders inside. I also love how the planner starts in August, not September or October like many planners do. I'm very pleased with this purchase and plan to but another one next year around this time from this company if new calendars are offered.

Ok quality - thought it had more pics

Paper is poor quality and I expected pictures on every page - but there are only pictures for each month. This is not like the Ansel Adams / Sierra Club calendars. But, it will do the job until next year when I go pack to the higher priced quality items. If you need a basic calendar this should do it though.

Taking full advantage of the massive lifting power of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the engineers in Huntsville and Houston turned the shell of a Saturn IVB into the largest pressurised and habitable volume to ever fly into space. But ambition comes at a price. No sooner had the enormous Saturn hauled its payload aloft than things began to go wrong. Designed to be powered by a pair of huge solar panelled wings the workshop arrived in orbit with one wing clipped. The first crew to board Skylab, veteran moonwalker Pete Conrad and his companions Joe Kerwin and Paul Weitz, suddenly found themselves having to unlearn their mission plans and hastily put together an audacious rescue, to save the multi-million dollar project. The mission of Skylab 2 was the forerunner of all of NASA's subsequent orbital repair missions. Conrad, Kerwin and Weitz proved to the world that astronauts could conduct long and ambitious repairs in space and go on to fulfill many of their original scientific objectives. They also established a new record for the longest time in space for a U.S. space mission, remaining in orbit for almost a month. This is the story of the beginning of the colonization of space.

Skylab mission reports effectively tells the story

It seems print is not completely dead yet! While much of the information found in this book is available online, it would take quite a bit of digging and a little bit of detective work -- and even then you'd come up short in many cases. Do yourself a favor and pick up this wonderful collection of documents related to the history and operation of the Skylab orbital workshop -- our first space station!

About the Author
The Alcor cryonics facility currently houses some 115 liquid-nitrogen-vitrified 'patients' - of whom over two thirds are head-only 'neuropatients'. Of around 1000 members worldwide, D.J. MacLennan became one of only a handful that have allowed their names to be made public. He is the first Scot ever to sign up.

In 2016, the influential New Scientist magazine featured D.J.'s cryonics decision, under the banner headline 'Why I signed up to have my head cryogenically frozen'.

THIS BOOK GIVES LIFE A CHANCE

I started to read online about cryonics a few months ago. A great deal of information is available but I needed an orientation, something that would integrate all parts together: the science, ethic/moral, philosophy behind that revolutionary idea. Well, this book answered my interrogations at every
level. The arguments in favor of cryonics developed by the author are not only well demonstrated, but make a lot of sense. I was just curious about the prospect of cryonics but thanks to D.J. MacLennan, I am more incline now to go ahead and contact Alcor, in the near future, for my cryonic arrangements. I found out a great deal of information about the structure of the brain, the scientific possibilities that lie ahead and even more importantly, the human mindset behind the acceptance and desire for cryonics after one 'dies'. The author talks about his life journey so far and it really helps the reader to connect, rely on a common human ground. This book is a lot more about life than death. It is a must, for anyone from an expert in cryonics and others who have never heard of it. Bravo (6 out of 5).

A book about living, not about dying

‘This book escaped from my chest like a small alien and started to eat me.’

What a great opening. It certainly sets the tone of this book, which is at times quite obsessive. Yet the book is far more uplifting and optimistic than I had anticipated for a book supposedly about death. Fundamentally it’s a book about living, not about dying. It’s a statement of why we should choose life (even if cryonics offers only a slim hope of it), not death, as if we ever needed such a reminder.

The book comprises not only the science behind cryonic preservation, but also the author’s personal story, as well as various related ideas in science, technology and philosophy. A short preface inadvertently reveals the author’s status as a nerd, by mentioning his use of a Linux laptop to write the book, and also sheds light on his struggle to find a coherent voice for writing the book, and his quest to find scientific evidence to back up his claims. I think he definitely succeeded in finding a compelling voice, and as for the scientific evidence, I find myself more inclined to accept his propositions now than before.

This is not a cold, logical book. Partly autobiographical, deeply introspective, it is a vibrant and personal account of why DJ wants to live on after death, not just how he means to accomplish it. His description of the experience of swimming in cold sea water for instance, evokes a tangible and visceral sense of what it feels like to be alive.

The discussion is practical and scientific, drawing on current theories of the self, based on the latest neurological research. It is deeply philosophical too, trying to define consciousness and identity. It is rooted in a can-do approach, with plenty of poetical thoughts scattered amongst the science, but little time for romantic pseudo-science or new-age thinking – nor for religious views of death, the soul, and the possibility of an afterlife. As DJ writes, ‘If you have religious or supernatural beliefs then I think it would be fair to say that your voyage of self-discovery has not yet begun.’

I enjoyed the self-conscious and self-analytical quality of the book. I also much enjoyed the anecdotes, stories and parables, as well as the thought experiments that are inserted throughout. Interspersed between auto-biographical details are discussions of time, religious attitudes towards death and the afterlife, burial customs, theories of the mind and the self, life-extension medicine, and neuroscience. The author reflects a great deal on the nature of the self, rejecting quasi-religious notions of a soul, and explaining instead how modern thinkers see the self arising as an emergent property of the operation of the brain. I particularly liked his metaphor of consciousness being like the story in a book – a narrative built from words, but transcending the mere words and letters from which it is formed.

I started out reading this book an interested skeptic, and am not wholly convinced that cryonic freezing offers a real hope of living on. Even DJ admits that it’s a last resort if all other hope has failed. There is a clue in the discussion of life-extension medicine that makes me question his motives. DJ notes that he would rather take a dietary supplement than do regular exercise, and I can’t help wondering if the cryonic freeze is just another example of an easy option.

Yet, as DJ points out, even a slim chance of survival, or at least persistence, is better than the assured destruction of the self that results from cremation or burial. Cryonic preservation is the best that present-day science can offer. The author makes his case well.

The book acknowledges the influence of great thinkers such as Daniel Dennett, Douglas Hofstadter and Aubrey de Grey, as well as others I was not familiar with, such as Derek Parfit, Steve Grand and Eric Harth. There are also plenty of sci-fi references, which I was easily able to pick up on, but for non-readers of the genre may prove irritating. The book is perhaps not the most accessible to the general reader. The author does at times assume familiarity with some ideas that are by no means mainstream. For example, not everyone will know what is meant by a ‘substrate’, in relation to a discussion of the mind.

There is plenty in this book, not for everyone, but for people deeply interested in what it means to be human, and with a strong interest in science and technology. For such people, DJ’s voice should take its place on your bookshelf next to other contemporary writers on neuroscience, philosophy of the mind, and life-extension medicine.

Very insight, much knowledge! (Honestly, a fantastic read!)

Frozen to Life: A Personal Mortality Experiment by D.J. MacLennan is a solid read. Unlike some nonfiction books on cryonics and life extension that feel the need to work in too much of the author’s life story, this 1ups them. MacLennan reels us into his upbringing just enough, without losing our attention. After touching on his personal life he quickly digs into the meat of what it is to be, how we are, what we are and what we can or cannot be. Perspectives. His perspective on spirituality and the philosophies behind time and space, while throwing science and direct quotes from major books, giving us a greater context to his thoughts. This book is thorough, as MacLennan does not skimp on any portion of his ideas to life and death, or the extension of our being. If you want to have a book that not only informs, but keeps you in constant thought and question on . . . everything, I would high suggest this, even if you pick and choose chapters to jump between.

About the Author

Patrick Cozzi leads the development of Cesium, an open-source WebGL virtual globe and map engine, at Analytical Graphics, Inc. He is the editor of WebGL Insights, coeditor of OpenGL Insights, coauthor of 3D Engine Design for Virtual Globes, and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Computer Graphics Techniques. Patrick frequently presents at SIGGRAPH and contributes to other book series. He is a member of Khronos and teaches GPU Programming and Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a master's degree in computer science.

constelling quilt

Elizabeth's Constellation Quilt by Olivia Fu
Wanted to read this children's book because it's about quilts and I will be starting one myself next week and always looking for new ideas. Also has just started to actually see stars in the sky as I'm blind but have had a few operations recently.
Each quilt does tell a story and this one holds more meaning. Starts out with the family, a father is a sailor and the parents try to teach the daughter about navigating by the stars.
She can't seem to get a handle on it til her mother makes her a quilt out of the constellations. Then the images come clear to her. Problem is her father was sending her postcards from his various locations
for work til they stopped one day. She hires a captain and she searches via the route her father took from the star configuration in hopes of finding his last destination...
Loved the story and the brilliant colors. A few pages were hard to read because the colors blended into the pictures or background color. Super story!

Kids want to do big things. My own kid wants to build a robot, a real robot that can clean his room or clear the table, and he's frustrated that he doesn't know all the things that go into building a robot. He's frustrated that the only robots that little kids get to build are crafts or toys that don't do anything real.

In Elizabeth’s Constellation Quilt, Elizabeth is a small child who wants to do a big thing. She wants to be a sailor, but she can’t make sense of the stars for navigation. So she devotes herself to studying the constellations, night after night. And when the time comes, she gets to be more than a sailor; she is a hero.

It's a lovely story of a child grappling with limitations, persevering, and putting her hard-earned skills to work to do a very big thing. The final illustration, of Elizabeth and her father with the constellation quilt draped over them, is heartwarming.

This is a book about love, wisdom

A warm and touching book for both children and grown ups. Elizabeth, the main character, is leading me into the mysterious sky with countless stars, and inspire me on learning more about constellations. This is a book about love, wisdom, and courage.
