I found this book to be a great depiction of the early years in the mining industry ...

This book was gifted to me by the author to review. I wasn't sure if Rough Cut would be a page-turner for me but within a few pages, I needed to know what would happen to these complex characters that Orvis has created. Realistic and full of conflict, I found this book to be a great depiction of the early years in the mining industry in small Utah town, For me, the complicated family issues and then the main character hardships in WWII had me hooked until the last pages. Arrives has an easy writing style full of engaging dialogue. A must read for history buffs!

An unjustly neglected classic

Verbal behavior is a classic work and one the most neglected and underrated scientific texts of century, erroneously believed by many to have been conclusively demolished by Noam Chomsky (whose work in competition with Freud's is possibly the most overrated). Skinners analysis of verbal behavior differs from other accounts both in psychology and linguistics in being entirely naturalistic and free of the quite far-reaching metaphysical assumptions about 'meanings' and 'rules' inherent in traditional approaches. The latter focus on an idealized and abstract entity (grammatically correct language) which does not really exist, whereas Skinner analyses the verbal behavior actually performed by people. He demonstrates that a large amount of linguistic phenomena can be interpreted and explained by the principles of operant conditioning which have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments and he explores the consequences of this analysis for problems normally only addressed by philosophers, such as the nature of meaning, the social aspects of language, the possibility of a private language and the nature of thinking. Many philosophers will surprised to learn that some of the best ideas of the later Wittgenstein can be found more clearly and elegantly expressed by Skinner.

Brilliant, Eminently Useful, and Difficult

Skinner's VB is a fascinating read and is the bedrock on which subsequent analyses of VB stand. It was and is an ambitious, risky, brilliant work. Despite its flaws in the final few chapters, the influence of this work on modern clinical- and applied-behavior-analysis is significant. Skinner's chapters on tacting (the VB of accurately, usefully labeling one's own behavior and the objects or qualities of one's world) and manding (asking for what one wants or needs from others) should be required reading for every psychotherapist. Contrary to popular opinion, VB was not refuted by Chomsky and never died. The proof of this has been in its usefulness for analysis, intervention and the improvement of human behavior. This is not BFS's most accessible work. Thus, three suggestions: (re)Reading BFS's _Science and Human Behavior_ OR _About Behaviorism_ may be an advisable refresher before tackling VB. Additionally, Kohlenberg and Tsai's (1991) Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (especially their chapter on the Self)will make clear, simply and compellingly, the importance of a rich, carefully trained repertoire of verbal behavior to the healthy development of the human. Finally, spending some time looking at the data - actual studies of verbal behavior in the journals JABA or VB - really highlights that a useful marriage of theory, philosophy and technology were brought forth by this book. A Diamond in the Rough

I return to this book off and on. (I wish I can study this book with someone who has mastered this material.) The only epiphany I have had in my life is/was when I read Chapter 2 of this book about two decades ago (and understood that Skinner was analyzing language utterances as law of effect conditioned behavior).

Simply a brilliant book. Most underrated,as people have pointed out.

I just reread Chapter 1. It only has 12 pages. However, the brilliance can clearly be seen. As is the difficulty. There are about 12 sentences (in these 12 pages) that I do not understand almost completely. (For instance, the one about speaker also being a listener.)

I happened to come across Chomsky's critique of Verbal Behavior online and started studying it closely, especially Section 3. I noticed several misunderstandings almost right away and started answering them, in a writeup. (I will post the details on these later.) On a lark, I sent a copy of this to Noam Chomsky, not expecting to receive a reply. I was surprised to get a reply. We exchanged several e-mails. However, Chomsky stubbornly refused to see my points. His answers were mostly non-sequiturs. Are may points valid? You be the judge when I get around to posting my two specific points. In the meantime, you may want to look at

I am rereading this book and the following thought occurred to me: In this book, Skinner proposes a whole new scheme for understanding language behavior, which effectively pushes aside centuries of traditional views. (If he is right, this is a major step forward. And I have no doubt that he is right.) Has this ever been done before? Did Darwin do it in his The Origin of Species? (This is not a trick question. I have not read it carefully.) I am trying to understand the hostility of people like Chomsky to this book, why they didn't give it the chance it richly deserves. I wonder whether the following is the more common scenario: somebody proposes a breakthrough idea or two, some people who buy into these start promoting these, and so on. Skinner is not diffident at all. (Darwin was. He held his book for a long time. Gould theorized that this was because Darwin's livelihood was from the church. Fortunately, Skinner's livelihood was NOT from prior incarnations of cognitive psychology :-)) When he started his PhD, he wrote to his parents that, if necessary, he was going to change the field to suit himself (or something like this). And this is what he did. I am wondering whether this one person pushing for all these major changes unabashedly is the reason for Chomsky's hostility. Chomsky has written that Skinner has no right define how psychology should be done.

A very moving love story

This was the first love book that I ever read, almost 16 years ago, and still make the tears come to my eyes. Throug the story one can see that very often the poeple who really deserves to be loved are not the most handsome, and if you are just looking with your very eyes instead of with your heart, you may miss a wonderful opportunity or a lifetime love. The drama between Clemencia and her two solicitors is very thrilling; one is handsome and ruthless, the other is ugly and tender, noble, brave; oh well!!, you may guess the very end...but the book is worth every pence you spend on it. I highly recommended it, but take the kleenex with you!.

Narcissism from a different perspective

A quote from the author appeared in a blog and caught my interest, leading to the purchase of this book. This book is very good at describing the dynamics of narcissists and their codependents. It was clear, concise, and would be particularly helpful to anyone coping with them in the workplace.

I found it helpful that the author used the term "codependent" rather than the more pejorative "minion", "enabler", "co-narcissist", and "reverse narcissist" that are frequently deployed. (The last thing someone who is suffering or has suffered due to a narcissist needs to hear is that they're a "co-narcissist" as it -- albeit unintentionally -- adds to the feelings of guilt, shame, and confusion they already endure as part of the abuse.) The more neutral "codependent" term and the author's explanation of what causes codependency makes it easier to understand and accept that one's own experiences and psychological wounds cause him or her to be more susceptible to narcissistic control. Acknowledging one's own acquiescence and submission to the sick relationship is one of the steps needed to grow healthier and move past it, but there are many stages one must pass through before being ready to confront this. It is not an easy undertaking. As David Thomas affirms, it takes courage -- the courage to confront our own truths as well as the truths of others.

While I wouldn't recommend it as a stand-alone source about narcissism, this is a worthwhile read if you are interested in this topic.

Narcissism: Behind the Mask

HI, This book is awesome! He is an expert! The best of the narcissism books. It is not like the other books that mostly list symptoms. He explains it. I read it slow to understand it all. There is much new insight. It is worth getting. I have read all the books on Narcissism trying to figure out my situation. This book is one of the best. I am glad I got it. I appreciate the greater insights in this book. It shows about Narcissism in the work place an more...the lies/manipulation/pecking order/back stabbing/twisting etc. It explains Narcissism in great depth and understanding. It helps deal with narcissists in general. Are they happy? Youtube.com also has videos on narcissism that help. Best wishes.

well written and referenced but has some fundamental flaws....

I liked this book in way because it did not seek to be a definitive work about narcissism or a psychology or management textbook. I think that I liked the chapters about morality, happiness and the future because there was a free discussion that no academic psychologist would permit, the discussion of philosophy was refreshing and I think helped to increase understanding. The book is well written and well referenced but I have to say I grew more and more disappointed with it because of the fundamental flaws it has. I think there is room for expansion of some ideas and a correction of some mistakes. It really deserves a three star rating but there is too much wrong with it.

I think that I started to worry about some of the ideas in this book when I read early on that that team-effort leading to a positive goal is about the deepest fantasy possible. I thought that events where staff and management take part in team-building work outside of their normal work are very constructive. I don't think that the author will be asked to coach any astronauts or military employees given his open disdain for the team that can work well.

I do not understand why Sam Vaknin, a convicted fraudster with no first degree in psychology and a bought Phd (he admits this in the film 'I Psychopath')was ever quoted in this book. He is a very skilled speaker and I think that his book and video lectures have actually helped people. He never cites any case-studies or research. His diagnosis of Barack Obama and the whole of the USA as narcissistic is preposterous. The author also indulges in diagnosis of people he has never met such as Robert Mugabe and George W. Bush. Such people do not actually need to be narcissists in order to do and say the things that they do.

The Zimbardo prison experiment is mentioned several times in this book. The experiment is about conformity, people given roles, altered norms, doing things they would not normally do. The subjects in this experiment did not have to be narcissists or co-dependents. This type of experiment from near the end of the golden age of social psychology, although interesting would not be conducted today and is of historical interest only, there are too many ethical issues involved and overt manipulation of situations to make it credible today. More subtle experiments in say bystander apathy situations may identify the psychopaths and the non-psychopaths in very interesting ways.

Co-dependency is never ever the flip side of the same coin as narcissism. It is a very general personality type that happens to be exploitable by the narcissist and by the sociopath. A narcissist without co-dependents does not become less narcissistic and the way they think does not change at all. There is no symbiosis. The narcissist does not perish in a a psychic sense without victims as they are ever the predator and simply look for new ones.

Co-dependents are not narcissists in any sense of the word, there is no such thing as the 'covert or inverted narcissist', just as there is no such thing as an inverted-psychopath, there cannot be such a person. This is an incorrect idea coined by the likes of Sam Vaknin. Co-dependents are correctly described in this book as products of dysfunctional upbringing, they could be anybody and comprise a wide variety of people. Narcissists are people whose cognitive processes are rigid and fixed which result in a fairly well defined cluster of behaviours and thought patterns. Even a tendency towards narcissim is not healthy, positive or very nice to be around for others. The description of the healthy narcissist is so vague that this person is of course not a narcissist at all.

Co-dependents are not usually sufferers of incipient mental illness or on a sliding continuum leading to a personality disorder. Narcissists are psychic predators and will always take more than they invest. The symbiosis described in this book does not really happen in real life. Narcissists are deeply damaging people to know. There is not enough description of how narcissists operate and seek not just to take but to destroy. The discussion of envy and the parasitic personality of the narcissist come very close but are not explored enough.

Most people are often not ever aware that they are dealing with a narcissist or what a narcissist is. Blaming them because the narcissist is positive about them seems rather unreasonable. Most people would of course prefer to be treated in a positive way. At the very end of the book co-dependents and narcissists are equally described as people who are responsible for causing emotional pain and suffering in the world. I should disagree with the idea that co-dependents are responsible for anything like as much abuse and misery as narcissists are. Many emotionally abusive people are neither narcissists or co-dependents. The author appears to have described co-dependents mostly as victims in collusion with the narcissist for most of the book and appears to contradict himself.

There is no mention of the empath, the healthy alternative to, not the flip-side of narcissim, but often a product of emotional abuse too.

There is no mention of cultists, and certain authors of self-help literature who all offer questionable varieties of global hope to people who are not co-dependent but quite understandably seeking answers in life and trying to improve their lives. Their gain is of course narcissistic supply and money. I'm surprised the Rev Jim Jones, Appleyard, Bhagwan Rajneesh, Billy Graham and the self-proclaimed employment guru and founder of the international scanner organisation John Williams are not mentioned. The excellent but brief discussion of how our materialistic world causes children and parents to be unhappy needs to be expanded. The main facets of learned-helplessness and depression are that problems in life are global, stable and external. Cultists and the like always answer these needs with global, stable and external non-solutions. The psychopathology of the narcissist cultist aside from being incapable of empathising might be said to mirror the depression of the person seeking a solution. Their solutions always have a dull unimaginative quality. Maybe narcissists and their prey carry a similar level of learned depression.

Nadia and Nathan the executives discussed in the book appear to be typical self-interested and controlling executives who totally lack social intelligence, typical of most senior managers and business owners I have ever encountered and not at all a surprise really. It would have been more educational to hear an account of a really dysfunctional company because then it would have helped the reader identify the lower level activity in their own work life. The most extreme example of toxic behaviour I have ever come across in a company was that of management who moved a paying client's deadline so that the client was inconvenienced so that they could accuse an employee of incompetence at his review which was happening the following week and contrive a constructive dismissal case.

I subsequently read about such antics and had it not actually happened to me it is something so insane that I should not have believed it. The notion of executives who put the business second which is described in this book in order to spite and control their employees could not be more true. A petty example of the lower management's control-and-disdain tactic was to say to an employee 'The customer is always right' which was a cowardly way of being spiteful and saying at the same time that there would be no managerial backup. Can you imagine such people managing something important where people need to work as a team? The corporate accounts of executive antics in this book sadly made for very convoluted reading.

Sometimes these biases are caused by heuristics or mental shortcuts which help us reach quick judgments when we have little time. At other times our judgment is clouded by situational factors and inner motivations and emotions.
However we are not completely helpless in this aspect. Knowing these biases exist can help us avoid them through conscious efforts. We need to be able to recognize these biases in our decision making. They are inevitable in most cases but they are not impossible to bypass.

A moral duty to understand

The 25 cognitive biases are an essential to understand for all. I first learned about the significance of understanding all 25 of these cognitive biases through the teachings of Charlie Munger, the business partner of Warren Buffet. He understood the the biases which exits in our brain without us even realizing it, and without a clear understanding, these biases can affect the way we make decisions to best optimize our situations.

This book gives you great examples and clear and simple explanations of all 25 of these biases to allow you to easily comprehend, understand, and then use instinctively in your everyday decisions.

I am happy I found this book. It is gives a great overview of the 25 most common thinking mistakes we do in our daily lifes. Although I have heard of many of these coginitve biases before, I have also learnt something new. I also like that the author kept the information in this book short and simple but to the point. This allows me to go through these biases again whenever I feel like or when I need a reminder to make wiser decisions. Was definitely worth the investment.

About the Author
On August 8, 1884, Sara Trevor Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri, into an old, established, and devout family. She was home-schooled until she was nine and traveled frequently to Chicago, where she became part of the circle surrounding Poetry magazine and Harriet Monroe. Teasdale published Sonnets to Duse, and Other Poems, her first volume of verse, in 1907. Her second collection, Helen of Troy, and Other Poems, followed in 1911, and her third, Rivers to the Sea, in 1915. In 1914 Teasdale married Ernst Filsinger; she had previously rejected a number of other suitors, including Vachel Lindsay. She moved with her new husband to New York City in 1916. In 1918, she won the Columbia University Poetry Society Prize (which became the Pulitzer Prize for poetry) and the Poetry Society of America Prize for Love Songs, which had appeared in 1917. She published three more volumes of poetry during her lifetime: Flame and Shadow (1920), Dark of the Moon(1926), and Stars To-night (1930). Teasdale’s work had always been characterized by its simplicity and clarity, her use of classical forms, and her passionate and romantic subject matter. These later books trace her growing finesse and poetic subtlety. She divorced in 1929 and lived the rest of her life as a semi-invalid. Weakened after a difficult bout with pneumonia, Teasdale committed suicide on January 29, 1933, with an overdose of barbiturates.

Sara's Early Poems Of Love

Sara Teasdale's poetry is full of passion and emotion, and it speaks to the reader even today, so long after it was first published. It is sad that the very same passion undoubtedly led to her suicide in early 1933. She wrote mainly of love, nature, and death, but of course "Love Songs" which was published in 1917 focused on love, though the other major themes are sometimes also there. It was her third major work (4th overall as "Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems" from 1907 is difficult to find, unfortunately, and was not a major publication).

"Love Songs" is an unusual collection, as many of the poems are from "Helen of Troy and other Poems" and "Rivers to the Sea". Section one is mostly republished poems from these earlier works (although some of the poems have slight changes), and section three is half republished works and half new works. Sections two and four of the book are entirely new poems. This doesn't subtract from the overall impact of the work though, and this is certainly a collection worth seeking out for those who love early 20th century poetry.

This work was recognized in 1918 by the Columbia University Poetry Society (an award which was to become the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry just two years later) which was sponsored by The Poetry Society of America. Love played a major role in several of the Pulitzer works that year, as it is a significant factor in Ernest Poole's "His Family" which won the first Pulitzer for Novel (later changed to Fiction), and Jesse Lynch Williams' comedy "Why Marry?" (a.k.a. "And So They Got Married") which won the first Pulitzer for Drama. Pulitzer had not made a provision for awarding works of Poetry, so the first couple of awards were given by grants from the Poetry Society of America.

Though probably not her best work, "Love Songs" is still well worth seeking out. From the introduction, which is in and of itself a poem, to "A November Night", it is full of passion, whether it be the passion of new love, on-going love, or the loss of love, Sara Teasdale paints incredible pictures with her words. It would not be a proper review without a couple of examples:

The Look (first published in "Rivers to the Sea")

Strephon kissed me in the spring,
Robin in the fall,
But Colin only looked at me
And never kissed at all.

Strephon's kiss was lost in jest,
Robin's lost in play,
But the kiss in Colin's eyes
Haunts me night and day.

To-night (first published in "Love Songs")

The moon is a curving flower of gold,
The sky is still and blue;
The moon was made for the sky to hold,
And I for you.

The moon is a flower without a stem,
The sky is luminous;
Eternity was made for them,
To-night for us.

I highly recommend "Love Songs", though I give this book only four-stars because her later works are even better.

Lovely "Songs"

"But all remembered beauty is no more/Than a vague prelude to the thought of you," Sara Teasdale wrote at the beginning of "Love Songs." Since she wrote mostly love poetry over her lifetime, it's unsurprising that Teasdale devoted an entire book to her best work.

Aside from some new poems ("You smile at me/As though I were a little dreamy child/Behind whose eyes the fairies live..."), Teasdale included previous poems from "Rivers to the Sea" and "Helen of Troy and Other Poems." As a result, the poems vary wildly throughout the book. There is, however, one thing that all the poems have in common: Love.

Love as romance. Love as idealism. Love as passion. Love lost. Love spurned. Love in decline. Love gained. Love being enjoyed. Love as a memory. Love as a wild thrill, a comforting embrace, an all-consuming joy. It's a sad irony that Teasdale herself never had a really successful love affair; most of what she wrote was idealized romance.

In an era when poetry was being radically revamped, Teasdale generally stuck to Victorian poetry structures: simple rhyme schemes, rich phrasing, and a lot of nature descriptions, although in poems like "Summer Night, Riverside," she tried freestyle forms. Surprisingly, her style doesn't seem cloying except in odd spots.

There is one flaw: at times, Teasdale's lushly romantic sensibilities get overwhelming. It's a bit like reading the diary of a lovelorn Victorian teenager. However, taken in small doses, "Love Songs" reveals that Teasdale had a rare talent. "In the wild, soft summer darkness/How many and many a night we two together/Sat in the park and watched the Hudson/Wearing her lights like golden spangles/Glinting on black satin."

Lovers, romantics and fans of lush poetry will enjoy "Love Songs," which brings together many of the best of Teasdale's (many) love poems. Pretty, charming and well-written.

Love for Sarah Teasdale

Sarah Teasdale has always been one of my favorite poets. This was the first book I bought containing her work, and I'm happy with it. Her poems are simple yet lovely. If you like poetry but Dickens types are a bit heavy for you, Teasdale is your girl.
