PREREQUISITES: No previous exposure to physics is assumed. The student should be familiar with the basic techniques of differentiation and integration, including polynomials and trig functions, and should be fluent in algebra and familiar with the basic trig functions.

COREQUISITES: The textbook teaches Calculus II skills as needed, such as the technique of integrating via trigonometric substitution. The textbook also reviews some Calculus I skills which students often forget, such as the mean-value theorem, l'Hopital's rule, and the chain rule. This is not done in an introductory chapter or an appendix, but in the main text as these ideas first become useful.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS: Boxes of important distinctions are included in order to help students distinguish between similar concepts--like average speed and average velocity, between velocity and acceleration, or between mass and weight.

TABLE OF EQUATIONS: There is a handy table of equations organized by topic on the back cover of the textbook. The equations in the text (but not on the cover) also include notes to help students understand any limitations that the equations may have (e.g. some equations only apply if acceleration is uniform or if mass is constant).

MATHEMATICAL & CONCEPTUAL EMPHASIS: There is much emphasis both on learning the mathematics precisely and understanding the concepts at a deep, precise level. An underlying idea is that students should not guess at concepts, but that concepts are mathematically motivated: Let the equations be your guide.

PROBLEM-SOLVING STRATEGIES: All of the main problem-solving strategies--like projectile motion, applying Newton's second law, or conserving energy--are highlighted and described step-by-step and in detail. Examples illustrate how to carry out all of the problem-solving strategies.

NOTES: Several notes are boxed to describe important points, common mistakes, and exceptions. Hundreds of footnotes are included to discuss subtleties without interrupting the flow of the text.

EXAMPLES: Conceptual and problem-solving examples were selected based on their instructiveness in elucidating important concepts or illustrating how to carry out important problem-solving strategies; quality was favored over quantity. Simple plug-and-chug examples and problems are scarce, since the audience for this book is independent students.

HINTS & ANSWERS: 100% of the conceptual questions have both hints and answers, since it's crucial to develop a solid understanding of the concepts in order to succeed in physics. Some of the practice problems have answers to help independent students gain confidence by reproducing the same answers, while 100% of the practice problems have hints so that students can see if they are solving the problems correctly (even if the problem doesn't have the answer in the back).

About the Author
Chris McMullen is presently a physics instructor at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He began his teaching career at Penn State Altoona, and has also taught advanced and gifted students at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts. Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in phenomenological high-energy physics at Oklahoma State University. He has published several papers on the prospects for discovering large superstring-inspired extra dimensions at the Large Hadron Collider. Dr. McMullen taught a special calculus-based physics course geared toward advanced students for seven years, which was unique in that it had a Calculus II corequisite in the first semester. His unique experience with this Calculus II physics course showed him that advanced students are more engaged and learn the concepts at a much deeper level when a higher level of mathematics is incorporated (with a clear, precise presentation) into first-year physics, and it also makes for a smoother transition into the abstract, highly mathematical second-semester on electricity and magnetism. From this, Dr. McMullen saw the need for a special calculus-based physics course geared toward advanced students, which incorporates a higher level of calculus, which could serve as a textbook or supplement for motivated independent learners or as a useful review of the fundamentals for physics or engineering students who have already completed their first year of physics. Dr. McMullen presently teaches a calculus-based physics course that is unique in a different regard: Most of the students are either math or math education majors, who catch on very quickly to the mathematical component of the course and are capable of learning new math skills as part of the course.

Nice book for advanced mechanics course

Nice book. Illustrative. concepts are explained very well. Very useful for students taking honors credit in calculus based mechanics course. The equations are easy to follow with the right amount of calculus. I have been TA for few years in introductory physics courses and I would totally recommend to my students.

Good book to learn Physics 101

I wish I had this book when I was in college. Chris guides reader on how to mathematically solve mechanics problems. In doing so he explains the underlying concept. I believe this approach gives reader some sort of "feel" toward mathematical equation. This in the end will develop mathematical intuition in problem solving rather than just simply plugging in formula. The only reason I give 4 stars is due to lack of diagrams.

"The first word that comes to me regarding your style is laconic and that's good. You manage to say a lot in a small space and I like that.

I can look at Stair from the vantage point of an old man now. I see and appreciate the different points of view you've presented having passed through all of those stages in my life.

In Precious Metals, so much is revealed about each in the short conversation between mother and son. I saw a mother's unconditional love for her son in her eagerness to follow social convention by reaching out to his fiance's family. Yet I sense the son isn't aware of the importance of this to his mother. He seems indifferent to her eagerness to reach out to them-perhaps a symptom of Asperger's syndrome? I have the feeling if the subject hadn't come up over supper, he might have come home one night to tell her he was moving out with his new wife.

Your spare phrasing sets the mood and tone for your work. William Zinsser wrote, "Clutter is the disease of American writing. We [are] strangling in unnecessary words, circular constructions, pompous frills and meaningless jargon." I believe that is a disease with which you have a strong immunity."

Exposing Our Flaws

Browning clearly demonstrates his understanding of the English language and how to manipulate it with the poetry contained in "Words Collected". The insight he provides on the human condition leaves one feeling bare, as though it were me he were writing about. Each of his characters are relatable, whether a child or elderly couple. His first-person narration of events I assume to be confessional-type experiences left me a bit disturbed because of the narrator's obvious inability to gain control over the vices that bring out his worst, yet I was able to empathize with a narrator who, despite their flaws, has a number of redeeming qualities and seems to have a defined sense of self. Never does the first-person narration waver in the tone Browning has established throughout this collection.

That was a nice read. Your words are deep. I enjoyed the word play. I think you write to explain your feelings and ideas thoughtfully. It brought me to an interesting atmosphere. One that's familiar and alien at the same time.
Words are powerful. Especially when it leaves a lasting impression to think more about it as it frighteningly fades away.

Love is Merton's Hidden Ground

What is so amazing about this volume is that it covers only part of Thomas Merton's letters. These are on Religious Experience and Social Concerns. Merton was truly all things to all people, but through it all, he is still completely himself. His unique voice is evident in all his correspondence where he is by turns serious and funny, kind and generous. Some of these letters read like essays. Some are anecdotal. All are entertaining.
His correspondents included Dorothy Day and Daniel Berrigan, Erich Fromm and Aldous Huxley, two Popes, Ethel Kennedy, Coretta King - the list is staggering. He wrote to Christians and Jews, Buddhists and Hindus and Sufis, social activits and theologians, men and women. He wrote about contemplation and pacifism, literature and psychology. He had friends in all walks of life, and he was beloved by all.
This is a book to browse in and/or study, highly recommended to all admirers and students of Merton's thought and life.

Correcting an Error and Praising a Book

First of all, I wish to correct an error. This book was not written before 1923. It was published in 1961 by Mary Henle, who taught at The New School for Social Research in the Graduate Department. She was a wise and dedicated scholar and teacher and deeply immersed in getalt psychology. She assembled a wonderful book. I was a student of hers when she brought it out for the University of California Press.

I've read and benefitted from all the papers in this book, classic work by Max Wertheimer (the father of gestalt psychology), Wolfgang Kohler (to whom the book is dedicated), Solomon Asch (the great social psychologist), Rudolf Arnheim (a gestalt view of art), Hans Wallach (perception) and Mary Henle herself.

One can't help benefitting and broadening from these essays that emphasize perception, attitude and everyday experience.

A Novella of Romance at a Mountain Vacation Resort.

Our heroine, Eva is the daughter of Botanist explorer Paul Edgarton. She has lived in and out of a steamer trunk for her entire adult life.
While awaiting passage to Mr Edgarton's next expedition, they are residing at a popular mountain vacation hotel.
One morning, her father enters into a conversation with a jaded, superficial, young stockbroker, James Barton, who is lamenting both his ennui and the intellectual dullness of beautiful young ladies.
Edgarton observes that young Mr Barton wouldn't/couldn't recognize an interesting, intelligent woman due to his superficial expectation of exterior beauty equaling interior quality. Mr Barton protests this harsh judgement, and before he knows it, he has been maneuvered into horseback riding with the dowdy Eve. He soon discovers that Eve is not dull, ponderous or plain.
This not-so-simple romance hinges on Barton's questionable ability to see beyond a lack of exterior polish to the true veiled quality of Eve.
The author sustains the tension in this brief, lyrical romance. Will Barton be able to re-define his romantic ideal of woman? Will Eve fight for the life that she wants? Or will she drift into the vagabond existence of her explorer father? A well written little romance.

Everything the other reviewer says about the plot is true, but it leaves out how charming this story really is. It is full of whimsical moments that made me laugh out loud. Truly delightful, quirky, and wise.

I really like to read. I heard about this book on a television show and researched to see if it was a real book. I loved it! Eve had character as did her father. She was a lady like no other!! I recommend this book to people all the time.

I just closed the back cover of Results. It is a true masterpiece, which exceeded even my lofty expectations. I expected the book’s title to reference getting better results from marketing tactics, and there is that within its pages. But such prosaic content is woven into an overarching arc of transforming our industry to focus on the real issue: providing real value to patients, prescribers and payers by delivering humanistic outcomes, rather than gaming the system to curry Wall Street favor. This focus on the patients we serve will lead us to the promised land. The fundamental paradigm shift to a results oriented value proposition a much needed manifesto for our industry, combining idealism in the best senses of the word with practical thought leadership based ion a lengthy and thorough immersion in the industry.

Results presents a vision to shred the black hat pharma has worn for too long, and replace it with the white hat of doing well by doing good. A vision for the future of pharma

I just closed the back cover of Results. It is a true masterpiece, which exceeded even my lofty expectations. I expected the book’s title to reference getting better results from marketing tactics, and there is that within its pages. But such prosaic content is woven into an overarching arc of transforming our industry to focus on the real issue: providing real value to patients, prescribers and payers by delivering humanistic outcomes, rather than gaming the system to curry Wall Street favor. This focus on the patients we serve will lead us to the promised land. The fundamental paradigm shift to a results oriented value proposition a much needed manifesto for our industry, combining idealism in the best senses of the word with practical thought leadership based ion a lengthy and thorough immersion in the industry.

Results presents a vision to shred the black hat pharma has worn for too long, and replace it with the white hat of doing well by doing good. The 21st century it is all about adding value to society, alleviating suffering, curing diseases, restoring health, and thus making the healthcare sector more efficient and effective.

The spirit of your book is aligned with the message of Pope Francis, that we need as a society to be more compassionate. Healing of the sick and caring for the afflicted is one of the most ancient spiritual imperative, and our industry can play an important role in that transformation if only we heed your call to listen to the better angels of our nature to use our renowned competencies to genuinely help people, and earn a fair profit from the value we add.

Too much of the recent history of pharma marketing has precipitated catastrophic opprobrium from payers and the public. If we value and virtue are our polestars, we can jettison the baggage of this chapter and return to the traditional values that put patients over profits, as a true belief, not just a hollow, ironic slogan.

If the industry follows the practical roadmap to execute this hopeful vision, it will prevent a multitude of maladies, including the most recent contretemps over unconscionable price gouging by financial types.

Required Reading for Pharma Marketers

Results is an important book for pharma and healthcare marketers. RJ Lewis and his fellow authors deliver thought provoking content in an easy to read manner. I was especially impressed with RJ's chapter on digital marketing. The world is going digital and pharma and healthcare marketers need to keep up. RJ is right on when he says, "The competitive advantage in the digital age lies in adapting and evolving." His comparison to the disruption caused by online banking is a great and transferable example of how pharma and healthcare marketing can adapt and evolve.

The unfathomable mysteries of sexual identity and charisma permeate this dark, meditative tale of a transsexual's murder in upstate New York, by the author of The Hard Rain (1980) and Remember This (1989)--inspired by an actual incident in Nebraska. It's a chilly October night in quiet Sparta, New York, when Chrissie, a local community-college student, first spots Dean Lily performing magic tricks at the local bar. Though the regulars can't help but gather around the magician's table, there's something about this slight, bright-eyed stranger that makes them vaguely uncomfortable. As Chrissie learns once Dean, who's been living in his truck, gratefully moves into her downtown apartment, Dean Lily is really Lily Dean--a man born in a woman's body about 20 years ago in another small town near the Canadian border. Surprisingly, Chrissie doesn't care much that Dean is physically female. For reasons this plain, boyfriendless part-time nursing-home employee can't begin to fathom, she's too strongly attracted to Dean's emotional intensity, butterfly-like elusiveness, and essential strangeness to judge him according to the usual standards. eerie similarities, but no credit to the real life "Dean"

Because I already know all about the true story that inspired this novel, the book was nearly ruined for me. All eerie similarities to Brandon's real life aside (the accidental phone call and the rollerskating date, Brandon's girlfriend bailing him out of jail with a check her mother intended for the hairdresser, being put in a psychiatric ward after swallowing an entire bottle of antibiotics when his first serious girlfriend dumped him when she found out her boyfriend was really a girl...etc. ), this book is very good. You can't put it down- I read it in two days.
I was only disappointed that there wasn't even a paragraph about Brandon at the end or beginning of the book (but there was the little disclaimer paragraph that states any similarities to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.? ....or do they put that in all books?).
Like the movie "Boys Don't Cry", this book recounts the character's, in this case, Dean's, last month alive. So if the end seems rushed, it is. That's how it happened.

An Interesting read that will keep you going

Proof positive, again, that truth is stranger than fiction, The Illusionist is a fictionalized version of the murder of Brandon Teena in Falls City, Nebraska. It makes for a gripping (and at times gruesome read), but the story is true -- and the subject of the new documentary movie,"The Brandon Teena Story", (produced and directed by Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir) and probably not coming to the neighborhood multiplex. The story is also proof (if incidents like the recent one in Jasper, Texas weren't enough), that sordid happenings occur in small town America just like in the big cities.

A depressing tale of doomed one-dimensional characters .

The reader must check his brains at the door to stay with this one. From the main character being referred to as Dean, Deane and Duane to flies buzzing after a holiday blizzard there are problems with this tome. The characters are hard to picture much less sympathize with and the action drags to an inevitable climax but no real resolution. It is frustrating after investing the time to read this that it leaves me shaking my head in wonder that there is no real clear ending.It was like reading through smoked glass or maybe it was censored because something is definitely missing.
