The story chronicles Humason’s life on Mount Wilson, from his first trip to the mountain to his days as a muleskinner, leading teams of mules hauling supplies to the summit during the construction of the observatory, and follows him through his extraordinary career in spectroscopy, working beside Edwin Hubble as the two helped to reconstruct our concept of the universe. A patient, knowledgeable and persistent observer, Humason was later awarded an honorary doctorate for his work, despite having no formal education beyond the eighth grade. His skill at the telescope is legendary. During his career he photographed the spectra of stars, galaxies and other objects many thousands of times fainter than can be seen with the naked eye and pushed the boundary of the known universe deeper into space than any before him. His work, which included assisting in the formulation of Hubble’s Law of redshifts, helped to set the field of cosmology solidly on its foundation.

About the Author
Ron L. Voller is an author, illustrator, musician, singer, songwriter, historian and sculptor living in New York City. He is the author/illustrator of 'The Adventures of Jude and the Guitar of Galore' (Author House, 2006). Ron received his B.A. in music and literature from the University of Denver. He began writing seriously twelve years ago after a successful career as a musician. He has written much in almost every genre of literature and has self-published one children's book, which he also illustrated. He has recently submitted an article for publication to Astronomy magazine. Dan Lewis, Dibner Senior Curator, History of Science & Technology at Huntington Library, has referred to Ron as the "world's foremost authority on Milton Humason."

This book has a nice blend of the history of the times Milton Humason ...

This book has a nice blend of the history of the times Milton Humason lived in. There are a few repeated paragraphs, typos, and a few mistakes in words. But it tells a nice story of how Humason came to become a astronomer. I have a number of biographies of astronomers and this one is my favorite so far. Probably because he came from a simple beginning and his talent and excellent work ethics made him a self made success. The author does a good job of lacing large historical events into this story And he does not seem to cast a jaded eye on what the actions of people back then were in comparison to current societal norms. Nothing is worse than reading a biography that injects the more liberal attitudes we now are under and tries to find fault with people from the past and their actions. This book is a gem and if you like obscure astronomers who played a large unpublished role in current theories of how the universe was formed and exists, this is a very good book.

Novel by Vladimir Nabokov, first published in Russian in 1928 as Korol, dama, valet. With this novel, Nabokov began his career-long obsession with gamesmanship, word play in several languages, and multiple, surreal images and characterizations. The image of a deck of playing cards is used throughout the novel. Franz, an unsophisticated young man, works in the department store of his rich uncle Dreyer. Out of boredom Martha, the uncle's young wife, seduces Franz. The lovers subsequently plot to drown Dreyer and marry each other. Martha changes her mind abruptly when she learns that an invention by Dreyer stands to increase his wealth, but she then dies suddenly from pneumonia. Very Well Written and Very Entertaining

Many think this is a lightweight novel, but it was one of Nabokov's favorite - according to the book jacket - and I agree with his choice. It is a bit similar to Laughter in the Dark, but more humorous. Most of the enjoyment with this book is the discovery of Nabokov's creation. Frankly, I suggest that you skip the reviews here, close your eyes for the moment and simply read the book - the same recommendation that I make for most of his books. Read the comments later.

Vladimir Nabokov (1899 to 1977) is a Russian born writer who went to Cambridge, then lived in western Europe, the US, and finally retired in Switzerland. He has a medium sized body of work with numerous novels, short works, and non-fiction. Most know him for his 1955 creation of Lolita, which he wrote and re-wrote for over twenty years before the final product. It was based on a real life French story, but set in America. He has 20 novels, and I have read about half.

Eleven of Nabokov's novels come from his early European period when he could write in many languages but he wrote his first 11 novels in Russian. This is from that period. It was his second novel and it was published in 1928 as a book, then translated years later.

The story is a love triangle set in Berlin. It is about the 34 year old wife of a 50 year old store owner, and the owner's young nephew. Beyond that, the reader can discover the plot.

It is a very humorous and entertaining a book. Having read many of his novels and most of his best sellers, I thought it was excellent and either a touch short of his best or among the best. It is a matter of taste, but I liked "King, Queen, Knave" and "Laughter in the Dark" as his best works, notwithstanding "Pale Fire" and "Lolita." That latter show more creativity as does "Transparent Things" - as do a few of his other works.

I think it is an excellent and an entertaining read. Some might not think it is among his best novels, but I liked it.

Nabokov's Second

Nabokov's second novel, his brightest and lightest of the lot, is regarded by some as being one of the weaker links in the author's ouvre.The plot here is pretty banal (a bland, country boy Franz falls in love with the wife of his rich uncle who lives in Berlin and before you know it Franz and his aunt are pathetically planning the murder of the middle-man). Nabokov pokes some fun at the story of Madame Bovary and offers somewhat of a parody. As usual though, the plot here takes backstage to the form and style of writing and Nabokov does not disappoint; the prose is beautiful and enchanting (minus some laughable sexual innuendos and so on) and makes the novel worth reading.While it's far from counting among Nabokov's strongest works, I still enjoyed the book and certain images have and will remain with me (especially the last couple of chapters, filled with the imagery of azure beaches and wide open skies). Nabokov does make an 'appearance' in the novel (a la Hitchcock), along with his wife, as the couple with whom Franz becomes somewhat obsessed at the seaside resort (look for mention of the butterfly net).This is a relatively light and accessible Nabokov read, recommended for shiny summer days.

A Poetic, funny, erotic entertainment

Vladmir Nabakov may be the closest kin in the twentieth century to the magnificent imagination of "The one thousand and one Arabian Nights". Yet this is not entirely an apt comparison, for whereas the "Nights" was a framework in which the dreams were presented as a reality, Nabakov's is a strange world wherein the reality is painted as a lush, evanescent dream. But beware the reader, who thinks this mere clever wordplay, for to read Nabakov is to be entranced into a highly sophisticated web where life is as much a romantic dirge as a brilliant puzzle. King, Queen, Knave was by his own admission, "my gayest novel", and yet there is a kind of sadness here amidst the gaiety and superlative sequence of almost divine juxtapositions that I have only experienced from the likes of a virtuoso rendition of Paganini.
The basic story is a simple love triangle, a rich Uncle, a faux nephew and a cold aunt, and of course involves an illicit affair culminating in a murderous plot. And yet what is not simple is how Nabakov deftly draws these characters, at once ultra real and but also aloof, blatant caricatures of the human soul. Like a pack of playing cards, thinking themselves to be free, but fully boxed in. And it's quite amusingly funny, but Nabakov's humor springs from diverse and often mundane sources - the ambience, the shaggy dog, the inward blindness of his protagonists and situations involving the Uncle and the two lovers where the former is completely unaware that he is being cuckolded right under his canopy. Personally, though, what I find most delightful is the poetic details that N throws in gratuitously everywhere, e.g.- The time when Uncle Dreyer, who is the owner of a large Berlin Department store pays a surprise visit to his nephew and his cohorts who work in the sporting goods dept. And "An early customer, who wanted another ball for his dog, was ignored for an instant" or consider "an old sculptor whose work was so lifelike that he managed to convey the impression of acute chorea". The descriptions of the lovemaking are also highly erotic - but I won't quote from that, not to mention the brilliant morphing of scenes and persons. Enough said. This book is a veritable masterpiece and a highly entertaining one at that.
One final quote: "A baker in the encyclopedia who had poisoned an entire parish told the prison barber who was shaving his neck that never in his life had he slept so well".
And there is a wonderful twist even in the last paragraph.

Amateurish and Incoherent

This is the first kindle book I've returned. There aren't that many books on Spark yet, so when I saw a new one for only $1 on Kindle, I figured it was worth a shot. And there were tons of good reviews, so what could go wrong?

I have no idea who is writing these good reviews (probably the author's friends), but first of all, there was not only an absolute lack of editing, but there wasn't even spell checking. I knew this couldn't be professionally published, so I looked up the publisher, and sure enough it was produced by a self-serve publishing service. That explains it. The author sounds like he speaks English as a second language, which is fine, but he really should have had an English-speaking editor. The quality of the code snippets were lousy too: fuzzy and pixelated even when viewing on a PC.

Some will be thinking that I am nitpicking on the editing, language, and presentation. Unfortunately, they weren't the major problem. There is not a lot of useful information in here. The author does seem to know a lot about the subject, but the information in the book seems like spurts of random, disconnected ideas. Early in the book he says let's get our hands dirty and install Spark, but his "instructions" are just to go to an unspecified website of a distribution, download it and install it. No specifics where exactly to download it from or which product in particular. Yes, I was able to google it, but then what do I need the book for? And that installation didn't lead to anything, as there were really no tutorials beyond starting a console. The rest of the book got worse, and I found myself thinking that I could get better information just by reading the free documentation.

I think the content is better suited to a blog that can be accessed for free. Even $1 felt like I wasted my money, so I returned it and will buy the O'Reilly book instead.

Poorly organized and edited, not much to be gained from reading this

Written in a slapped-together style. It appears as though the author and editors speak English as a second language or something. I frequently found myself guessing about the intended meanings of phrases, sentences, even paragraphs, and I have over 30 years of experience reading computer science texts. The material presented is poorly organized and fairly useless as a reference guide. And in several places the author goes off into lengthy praises of Spark's capabilities without detailing what they are. I truly feel as though I wasted my money on this book (even at that $3.99), not to mention the hours spent reading it.

This is the first time I have disagreed so completely with the majority of Amazon user reviews of a book, leading me to wonder whether many of the positive "reviews" might just be attempts to game the system. Rereading them now, many sound like they were invented by drawing from a common list of phrases and keywords, and some of their praise would be over the top we even for a genuinely excellent book. Shame on me for not reading the critical reviews before buying, even when they were outnumbered 15:1.

Worst technical book I have ever encountered

I was hoping to get a quick overview of Spark from this book but was extremely disappointed. The author clearly does not know how to write in English or perhaps in any other another language at that. It is redundant and practically useless as a guide to leaning Spark. I will be returning it.

Why does Amazon even offer such poor quality books?

About the Author
Theoni Pappas is passionate about mathematics. A native Californian, Pappas received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1966 and her M.A. from Stanford University in 1967. She taught high school and college mathematics for nearly two decades, then turned to writing a remarkable series of innovative books which reflect her commitment to demystifying mathematics and making the subject more approachable. Through her pithy, nonthreatening and easily comprehensible style, she breaks down mathematical prejudices and barriers to help one realize that mathematics is a dynamic world of fascinating ideas that can be easily accessible to the layperson.

Her math calendars and over 18 math books appeal to both young and adult audiences alike. Excellent math-geek calendar!

I love this calendar! It is posted outside my office door (I am a physics professor at a university) and I get lots of positive comments about how fun it is to work out some the interesting answers. I look forward to the new calendar coming out every year!

Year after year the errors continue!!!

Read on to see the 2016 errors:
2015 Review: NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! Again, the author has neglected to appropriately proof her work (or the work of others who provide her with the mathematics problems). Take the problem in September 2015. The "Novel" question references a total of 2,443 pages, but the answer references a total of 2,553 pages. This is unforgivable in a mathematics. And what's more, this happens year after year after year.

And now the 2016 calendar is out. And the author didn't wait long to make her first error. January 4th: What is the product of the two solutions to these two equations? [ - .5X - 7Y = 13 ] and [ 6X + .5Y = -13 ]. The product of the solutions to these two equations is certainly NOT 4. But if you change the sign of the first variable in the first equation (resulting in [ .5X - 7Y = 13 ] and [ 6X + .5Y = -13 ]), then the two solutions are -2 and -2, and their product is 4, which is also the date of the problem. I pray that someone out there reading this review can contact the author and encourage her to hire an editor who can perform basic mathematical calculations in her future calendars.

When you sit down in the morning with your Starbucks Double Mocha, set a few minutes aside to solve each day's little brain stimulating equation. It's refreshing, eye opening, worth every brain exercise. And don't be frustrated if you don't know how to solve it. Now you have something to do for the rest of the day.... Research! Your Boss will understand.

Nancy C. Jeane has a M.Ed. Degree with 23 Years of Public School Experience. Nancy trained with the five U.S. Star Gate original Remote Viewers; Skip Atwater, David Morehouse, Paul H. Smith, Lyn Buchanan and Joe McMoneagle. She served on the Board of Directors of the International Remote Viewing Association and is currently an Assistant Instructor and Operational Remote Viewer for RVIS, Inc. An extremely influential read.. highly recommended for anybody interested in better understanding what propagates today's environmental issues and how to fix them. Specifically using a psychological lens to view these problems, you're sure to learn something new, interesting, and personally applicable. The theory and ideas presented in this book can span a multitude of academic and worldly fields. Definitely a book I'll keep on my bookshelf.

What I appreciate most about this textbook is the readability and practicality of the psychological terms and information presented. Many theories are rooted in real world examples that help the reader understand the application of these theories in everyday experiences. I find myself consistently drawing on information learned from this textbook in both academic and non-academic settings. This realization is consistent with the underlying focus on the importance of systems thinking highlighted throughout this text when understanding the psychology of sustainable behavior and living. Overall, this is a particularly useful textbook for someone new to psychology and interested in sustainability.
