"My Children, Oh My Poor Children"

I read THE COLONEL after having read a review recently in the "New York Times" mostly because I am always intrigued when works of fiction are suppressed and also know practically nothing about modern Iran. (I believe I have only read one other book on the subject, Azar Nafisi's fantastic nonfiction book READING LOLITA IN TEHRAN.) According to the NYT review and as I later read in the extensive Afterward to the novel provided by the translator Tom Patterdale, the Iranian Mahmoud Dowlatabadi's novel that he worked on for over twenty years has yet to be published in his native land. In the words of Patterdale: "The descriptions of torture are taken from the experiences of the author himself, or from those of his friends. It comes as no surprise to learn that THE COLONEL has never appeared in its original language in the author's native country. The manuscript remains In the hands of the censor, who has demanded a number of deletions and revisions, which the author has refused to make."

Although reading this rather short (220 pages) novel takes some effort, the results are worth your trouble. For example, the story does not unfold in a linear manner and is told through a third person narrator with juxtapositions of the un-named colonel's voice in italics. Patterdale also states that while Dowlatabadi is essentially self-educated that he has read widely including the "great Persian poets like Hafiz and Rumi." One wonders if he is also influenced by the South American giants of magic realism since he uses that technique in this novel. The passage where his dead wife Forouz--how she met her death is one of the many interesting paradoxes of this complex novel-- prepares the body of the colonel's and her fourteen-year-old daughter Parvaneh for burial is a brilliant and beautiful example. (I am hardly giving away the plot here since anyone who reads the book blurb finds out before beginning this novel that his precious daughter is murdered .)

The novel is awash with beautiful language that often is poetic. Metaphors abound: "He [the colonel] had not even prevented Parvaneh, the youngest of his children, from plowing her own furrow." "My eyelids [the colonel's] felt like dried bricks rubbing together." One character has "gimlet eyes"; another looks like "a dejected shepherd whose flock has been attacked by a pack of wolves." Then there are whole paragraphs that become an extended metaphor: "Parvaneh had been young and the colonel could not imagine her without her grey school smock. He could even picture the outline of her bony shoulders through it. So much about Parvaneh reminded the colonel of the little canary, which from the first day, he had named after her. Perhaps he had become so attached to his motherless daughter through having had to bring her up on his own, loving her both as father and as a mother. He saw her as a fledgling that he was teaching how to fly. He had once heard that young birds lose their way in storms, especially at dusk, and get blown off course into unfamiliar country. He saw all her comings and goings in this light and, when she disappeared, he imagined that the wind had carried her off and lost her."

Although Mr. Patterdale suggests in his informative Afterward that the colonel's five children "represent the divergent political tendencies of the [Iran] revolution" (the colonel had served in the army of the last Shah), the novel can also be read on one level as a father's all consuming concerns for his many very different children. It is certainly a novel well worth reading.

Mr. Dowlatabadi in his interview said that he was crushed under the power of sadness he was describing in this novel, which is true. Very powerful and sad story about few generation who was crushed by revolution in Iran.
I lived in that circumstances and witnessed that era, and this novel brought back all that memories again.
This is a story about "a colonel" who admires "The Colonel" who is a historic revolutionary figure in recent history of Iran who was killed by central government. Our "colonel" the central figure has several children who in different ways "swallowed" by revolution.
He describes the brutal circumstances very vividly.

Like his other books, Mahmood D.'s 'colonel' is rivetting and spell binding in the authors's power of description and creation of his lead personality, and then the development of the plot. Can't wait to see his next book. Best wishes for the author.

I read this book right after my second son was born. It is riveting and emotional. It did what few other books can do: it make me cry. Tamara does an awesome job of telling these people's stories and giving them depth. I highly recommend this book.

The author has the remarkable ability to paint a picture with just a few choice words

Welcome to the country town of Loveland, where "people from all over mail in their valentines so they can have a Loveland postmark", and where the locals spend their days drinking at the bar, riding bulls in rodeos, or fishing. Meet Maggie and her sister CJ and her brother Tibs who were orphaned when their archeologist parents died in a plane crash when Maggie was 16. As the oldest, CJ was charged with raising them. Now wanting children of her own, CJ finds she is infertile. In any event, she is in a dead-end relationship with fellow bartender Peter.

Maggie falls for charismatic Jackdaw from the first moment she sees him riding a bull. When he dislocates his shoulder and moves in with Tibs, Maggie and Jackdaw are brought closer together. However, CJ takes an instant dislike to him. Are her feelings justified?

While Maggie helps Jackdaw write his great American novel, Jackdaw's perception of her changes. He comes to resent her and often gets the unreasonable urge to hit her, just as his father used to hit his mother. Nevertheless, Jackdaw feels compelled to marry Maggie when she becomes pregnant. When baby Jes is born with spina bifida, Maggie remains optimistic and vows to be "the perfect mother", but Jackdaw blames Maggie for trapping him. And as Jes' condition worsens and Jackdaw's tolerance reaches breaking point, tragedy is bound to strike.

"Deep Down Things" is a heartbreaking account of one family's struggles to come to grips with both past and present tragedies. It is told alternately from the points-of-view of Maggie, her sister CJ, her brother Tibs, and Tibs' friend Jackdaw. This allows us to follow each character's story and is especially effective during the book's climactic scene, which we get to see from all four points-of-view.

Throughout the book, the author uses an extended metaphor centering on Jesus: the names "CJ" (as opposed to "JC"; her real name is also "Cleopatra" who is rumored to have fathered Jesus with Julius Caesar), "Maggie" (short for "Magdalene"), "Tibs" (short for "Tiberius", the name of the Roman emperor in power at the time of Jesus' crucifixion), and "Jes" (short form of "Jesus"); Jackdaw's comparison of Maggie to the Virgin Mary; the story of the bum who walks into CJ's bar; references to The Life of Brian; and the parallel of Maggie not being able to help Jes, just as Mary was unable to help Jesus on the cross.

By far, the author's greatest talent is her beautiful eye for detail. She has the remarkable ability to paint a picture with just a few choice words. She does this both in the way she perfectly portrays all four of her narrators, as well as in the way she describes the scenery. It's obvious she loves this land and knows it well.

"Deep Down Things" shares some similarities in theme to the author's previous book, "How to Be a Man". In my review for that book, I stated that this author is a talent to watch. Well, now I'm watching her even more closely because I don't want to miss a thing.

Warnings: coarse language, sex scenes, domestic violence, gay and lesbian themes, alcohol abuse.

I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
Deep Down Things is a realistic drama story.
The book follows CJ, Tibs, Maggie and Jacksaw. All are young adults who grow up and deal with the realities of life. Each has experienced tragedy in some way. Maggie, Tibs and CJ are siblings who lost their parents when Maggie was 16. Their death has effected each of them in different ways. CJ turns to alcohol, Tibs withdraws from everyone and Maggie struggles to deal with the loss. Jacksaw is Tibs friend. He's a cocky, confident young man. Maggie ends up falling for him. But he has his own traumatic past to deal with. Can any of them find some kind of peace and put their life back together or are they doomed to roam in the darkness forever?

A deep dramatic story. It took awhile to figure out who was who but once I did the story flowed easily. The book jumped from each of their points of view allowing us to see into each and everyone of their minds. I enjoyed being able to get a peek inside each of their heads. My favorite character was Tibs. To me he was the best and most supportive character. Jacksaw was an ass. I really tried to like him but his actions were inexcusable. Maggie was okay. Towards the end the strength she possessed was amazing and I felt for her. CJ had her own struggles but she was more of a background character to me. The story was okay for me. I found it a little hard to get into and I think it was because I didn't care too much for the characters.
Being a recent mother myself, Maggie's struggle really got to me. What she had to go through and how she was able to remain strong was amazing.
I recommend this to any reader who enjoys dramatic stories that deal with tougher topics. It's a heavier read.
I would rate this 3.5/4 fangs.

Great Fraction Book!

I taught Adult Ed last school year and had a student who was literally shaking when she had to do some fraction work. She just couldn't get it. I bought this book to use with her, and she started to understand fractions! I also sat and worked one-on-one with her for a couple of hours. This book goes slowly and thoroughly.

Because I didn't let the students write in it, several other of my students benefited from it as well!

Nice but a bit large

i ordered this desk calendar for a teacher friend of mine who likes birds, it's very nice looking and good quality. My only concern is it's rather large - see photo on a sheet of printer paper. I'm sure it will be okay to fit on his desk but check dimensions before you order. Otherwise it's a great product, very nice looking and comes packaged well to give as a gift.

If you love birds, this is the calendar for you

I love this calendar. We have been getting one for three or four years now. The pictures are beautiful. I only have two comments. If you only want pictures of back yard birds, you will be disappointed- many are of exotic species you will never find near home. But if you just like all birds in general, you will enjoy it very much. The other comment is that it would be really nice if they told you where the birds are found. Whenever the picture is of an unfamiliar one we always wonder where you might see one in real life.

This is really a real eye opener to be aware and be prepared!

In these days where electricity is already considered as part of our daily needs and also the electronic gadgets, t is not possible that the day would come that EMP attack will arise especially with what is happening in our world now. About the Author
John Lister-Kaye is one of Britain's foremost naturalists and conservationists. He is the author of eight books on wildlife and the environment, including At the Water's Edge, and has lectured on three continents. He has served prominently in the RSPB, the Nature Conservancy Council, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Wildlife Trust. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for services to nature conservation. He lives with his wife and family among the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, where he runs the world-famous Aigas Field Centre.

"Nature takes no prisoners; it renders no quarter to the unprepared."

I have not read any previous books by John Lister-Kaye but will be looking into the ones he has written because he writes so heart-wrenching and poetically of the world of nature and my favorites, the birds.

This book is about a year in the life of Aigas the Highland wildlife center where he lives. We start in winter with the preparation of harsh weather by the wildlife and especially the birds.

Each chapter is another treasure in nature reading. Whether on a wildfire, the rooks lives, the buzzards problems, or the sight of a pine marten in a tree, each essay brings us closer to the wonder of stepping outside and letting nature consume us.

I loved the summer solstice chapter on spending the night outdoors only to wake up to be within feet of a merlin and staring/glaring each other down. He says when he closes his eyes he can still recapture that moment and thanks to his writing I can also.

Mr. Lister-Kaye touches upon the changes in the environment of the last thirty years he has lived at Aigas. He shows us how tiny changes in temperature can effect insects and birds survival and how important a loss of a single insect species can be if others depend on it for survival. He doesn't bother to say whether it's man-made or cyclical, the main thing is to do what we can to help other species survive.

I was gifted this book by the publisher for an honest review.

Poetic, thought provoking, a wonderful natural history read.

I had previously never heard of this particular naturalist nor had I read anything by him, but having encountered the absolutely wonderful writing in this book I assuredly will be reading other books by Mr. Lister-Kaye. "Gods of the Morning" takes the reader through a year of seasonal changes in the author's home in the Scottish highlands of Aigas, where he lives and also runs an educational nature field center. Not just birds, but many other species are enlightened upon and written about in a wonderfully poetic way, including spiders, pine martens, roe deer, squirrels, hares, aphids, and there is even an absolutely beautiful chapter of the book devoted to the many dogs the author has had throughout his years, all lovingly described and memorialized. As I say, the writing is exquisite, and many times poetic, with certain passages taking my breath away as I would read them. Simply lovely nature writing. Parts of the book too elaborate on the changing natural world and how different birds, mammals, and insects adapt to those changes. The books ends with the author describing a walk in the woods with his five year old grandson. Beautifully written, thought provoking, and at times poetic and rapturous, I would highly recommend "Gods of the Morning" to anyone who is enthusiastic about birds, wildlife, or the natural world. It is a very special book and has moved to very top of my list of nature writing.

Love these calendars. We purchase one every year. The squares are big enough to write several appointments a day, and I feel protected having a wolf watching over me 365 days a year!
