Chemistry I in a Friendly Package with Much Ancillary Material

"U Can: Chemistry I For Dummies" (1st edition, 2015), by John T. Moore, is one title in the 'U Can' re-branding of the '... for Dummies' series. It covers introductory chemistry at the high school or college level. This review will consider this title as a text book, not as a test prep book: In other words, from the standpoint of someone who wants to learn about chemistry, not that of someone who merely wants to score well on a test.

Good:
- Writing is very good: Explanations are well thought out and clear, while the tone is relaxed.
- The "Part of Tens" section is maintained from the Dummies books. Of special interest: "Ten Chemistry Formulas You Should Memorize" and "Ten Annoying Exceptions to Chemistry Rules".
- Practice problems including throughout.
- Associated on-line content.

Bad:
- The physical book itself seems like it was printed on less-expensive paper, with less bleaching and more pulp than one usually finds in this market.

Overall, this book delivers, and compares favorably with other chemistry books of this type, such as "Chemistry Made Simple" (2005), also authored by Moore and "Chemistry for the Utterly Confused 1st Edition" (2007), also co-authored by Moore and Langley.

Endorsement: Our high schooler found the exposition in this book to be a helpful supplement to his textbook.

Not For High Schoolers (or not for all of them) **3.5 STARS**

I'm really on the edge of giving this book 3 STARS because I want to point out that it won't be for everyone. We happen to have a sophomore in high school chemistry. So far she's got an A but there have been times where we've had to sit down and rephrase the textbook's, and sometimes teacher's, explanation of a phenomena.

This is to be totally expected. Anyone who's delved into childhood development and education knows that people/children learn differently. And therein lies the value of this book. It's got a more relaxed approach to Chemistry and it possibly provides explanations that will make more sense to the student.

The reason that this book didn't work for us was because it was still too text-booky for our high schooler. And I'd say that it's more for college students.

There are lots of sample problems both in the book and online. Definitely worth checking out.

Diverse and interesting!

I had to purchase this book for class, but nonetheless, I'm glad that I did! I love the different approaches that different authors take to define the keywords. I thought that some chapters were better than others, but overall a really interesting read and great introduction to "buzz words" in Disability Studies.

But the people living here also live with Katrina's continued wake – they have mental anguish, resentment over how the U.S. government treated them, and questions about what life could have been like were it not for the man-made failures that allowed Katrina to do so much damage. Mostly, they just miss home.

Peter Moskowitz is a writer and journalist based in Brooklyn, New York. He's written for Al Jazeera America, The Guardian, Vice, Gawker, The New Republic, and many others. He's writing a book about gentrification if four U.S. cities: New York, San Francisco, Detroit and New Orleans.

Moswkowitz's story was compelling and well-researched. I highly recommend it. Totally worth the money. A decade after Katrina, I am glad pieces like this are examining the consequences of both the hurricane and the media/publicity surrounding it.

A fascinating read.

This is a fascinating look-back on a feature of the Katrina debacle and its aftermath. Carefully researched and well written, this book is well worth reading. As the book description says: "At the edge of Houston sits a community like no other: 65 petite, pastel houses inhabited by survivors of Hurricane Katrina and built by one of the most famous people in the world, Oprah Winfrey. The community, funded with $10 million of Oprah's money just a few months after Katrina, is made up of 65 families picked by nonprofit Habitat for Humanity. All pay around $400 a month in mortgage to live there. The houses are nearly identical. Their furnishings were selected by Nate Berkus, and paid for by Oprah's television sponsors." I am looking forward to more books from this author.

Due to the current information explosion happening right now, Akhlaque Haque’s new book, Surveillance, Transparency and Democracy – Public Administration in the Information Age”, is a vitally important and contemporary study of the effects of this overload of information on modern day public administrators. Our world contains vast amounts of digital information which is quantitatively growing by leaps and bounds each day. The author realizes that if this information could be managed well, it could bring great benefits to our society and increase governmental accountability to its citizens. However, he also recognizes and warns of the potential misuse of this information in violating constitutional principles and values. He challenges public administrators to balance measurable information with contextual information in their decision-making process. A must read for anyone in the field of public administration and governmental service.

If the topic of surveillance, transparency and privacy is giving you pause than this book is for you and will put your critical thinking into fast forward. With the revelations about the tsunami of data collection on private citizen and the mass data breaches both in the private sector and the governmental sector – there are many who are concerned that our democracy is threatened in this information age. It is refreshing to see a scholarly book on the subject. I found it interesting that Professor Haque stated that he not intending to settle a debate by his book, but rather to open one. If people read this book and enter this important debate, than he will have done his job. Highly recommended.
