Clinical psychologist Michael Levy provides a psychological perspective of celebrity and entertainment obsession. In the first section, he details personality factors that may contribute to celebrity obsession: e.g., need to be entertained, admiration of physical attractiveness, need to belong, vulnerability to addiction, need for idols, and lack of self-esteem. In the second section, he highlights aspects of the cultural environment that promote and afford celebrity obsession, including greater isolation and decline of close-knit communities, a shift in life-fulfillment activities from work to leisure, and expansion of technology and mass media. And in the third section, Levy weaves these various components together, further expounding on connections—e.g., formation of para-social relationships to fill a growing isolation, idolization as a means of reflecting ideal selves, and downward social comparisons to enhance self-esteem. The work is unique and written for a broad audience; psychologists will find useful ideas for future research and application. Summing Up: Recommended. Michael S. Levy, PhD, is a psychologist who has worked in the substance use disorder treatment field for over 20 years. He is the director of substance use services at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Massachusetts, and is a lecturer in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He lives in Andover, Massachusetts.

An engaging look at the fascinating topic of celebrity obsession

Michael S. Levy, PhD, tackles an interesting phenomenon among members of our society in his new book, Celebrity & Entertainment Obsession: Understanding Our Addiction. The fascination and obsession with celebrity in this country has catapulted to new heights in the last several decades.
As a child in the 1950-60s, conversations among my mother, grandmother, and aunts about their daytime soap operas confused me. Their shared thoughts sounded as if the characters on TV were their best friends or perhaps their worst enemies. Today I have no patience or understanding of the reasons behind the obsession with Hollywood stars, football greats, and others constantly in the limelight.
Dr. Levy’s book presents the results of studies, statistics, surveys and more to unravel for the interested just how this phenomenon comes into play in our already busy lives. Dr. Levy writes:
"My decision for writing this book is to shed light on why we as a society are obsessed with [entertainers] and with being entertained. A secondary goal is to wake people up so they can view themselves through a different lens and with a changed perspective." (p. xiii)
In setting out his beliefs and observations, Dr. Levy shows how entertainment and the persons working as entertainers, news media, sports and more consume our leisure time and make us feel good. In our search for happiness and contentment, our vulnerability to addictions of many kinds has allowed this obsession with glamorous, powerful, strong people and their lifestyles to consume our thoughts and minds via the use of media connections.
It is my belief that anyone who wishes to understand more about our need and desire to live vicariously through the rich and the famous will gain much insight by reading Celebrity & Entertainment Obsession: Understanding Our Addiction.

A fascinating look at the psychology behind the phenomenon of the 21st century's obsession with celebrities and entertainment

Having taken both psychology courses in the past and having worked in Social Services, I'm always interested in learning more about human behaviour. Psychologist Michael S. Levy has explored a relatively new field, that of our society's addiction to celebrities and entertainment. We all do it, and perhaps don't realize that we do. And in today's world with super easy access to the Internet 24/7, we and our children are even more vulnerable to this addiction.
Dr. Levy writes in the first person, sometimes mentioning his own personal experiences which makes this intelligent and well-written book a pleasure to read. It's not dry even though he does mention statistics and quotes from many studies and includes 40 page of notes and references in the back section of the book. The thorough index makes it easy to find information.
I was fascinated but not surprised by the information presented because I have researched how to help my kids not become so addicted to the entertainment scene. But what I did learn was why and how we are inclined to do certain things and how both our inherent nature and the social scene contribute to this. For example, we have a natural tendency towards voyeurism so even if we don't want to view something we are still drawn to it. Also we live an increasingly isolated existence and this coupled with boredom and loneliness will draw us toward this obsession with celebrities and their lives.
Essentially, as Dr. Levy states, "...we have come to rely on entertainment to feel good." Is it no wonder we are a depressed society? Entertainment has "capitalized on our humanness", Dr. Levy continues. As a mother, this book reinforced my vigilance towards what my children watch but has also made me more conscientious as to what I can do to keep my children actively engaged in society.
This book is an excellent resource and should be part of any curriculum in the studies of Psychology. I also think it's good reading for parents and social workers. Dr. Levy includes an epilogue summarizing his findings and this quote touched me:

Being on the other side of the good DR's coin

Being on the other side of the good DR's coin, I myself never really could grasp, let alone care less about the sad pathetic people that for some silly reason or another, happen to care about every breath these so-called famous people draw in. "Dude, you know him/her/them! How cool, what are they like!?" With my reply being... "Uh, like the idiots that sleep on your floor, eat all your food, and still owe you a hundred bucks..." Doing a lot of A&R work in the West Hollywood, CA Sunset Strip, I was more interested in how to "get people obsessed" with celebrity, rather than being one.
Dr Levy's book explains the very people that we relied on to live and breathe the labels latest investment.
How can I make them want to be like this? How can I make the money look like the goal to the answer of all their problems? How can makeup, clothing, sound and lighting make these people wish they could look and sound like this idiot? How can the drugs, alcohol, lights, camera, and action of the nightlife the paparazzi catches, make these people wish they could live the adventure of a lifetime.
Like that pill, pipe, or pitcher of beer, celebrity creates a self medicating illusion that "fixes" us temporarily, until the next fix is needed. The only difference is that the mediation is free, can be found anywhere, and can come in many brands and dosages. From 15 minutes of sports & entertainment fame, to 5 minutes of internet fame, the addictive personality is no respecter of persons, or self medication.
Dr. Levy's book explains the very thing that the industry relies on to keep the money in circulation.

They are all tools of control that the person at the top, where the buck stops, is hoping you will never decide to love and be happy with... Yourself.
Forgive me, because at one time, I was one of those people that sold misery to the people that needed love, and thought that is what that temporary feeling was...
