About the Author
Pedro Calderón de la Barca y Barreda González de Henao Ruiz de Blasco y Riaño nació en Madrid el 17 de enero de 1600. Su padre, Diego Calderón, era hidalgo y fue secretario del Consejo y Contaduría Mayor de Hacienda de Felipe II y Felipe III. Se casó con Ana María de Henao, perteneciente a una familia también de origen noble. Pedro fue el tercero de los cinco hijos que el matrimonio alcanzó a tener y era, pues, de origen montañés e hidalgo (Viveda, Cantabria). Empezó a ir al colegio en 1605 en Valladolid, porque allí estaba la Corte, pero como destacó en los estudios, el padre, de carácter autoritario, decidió destinarlo a ocupar una capellanía que estaba reservada por la abuela a alguien de la familia que fuese sacerdote. Con ese propósito ingresó en el Colegio Imperial de los jesuitas de Madrid en 1608, situado donde ahora se encuentra el Instituto San Isidro, y allí permaneció hasta 1613 estudiando gramática, latín, griego y teología. Cuando llevaba dos años allí, falleció su madre (1610) y su padre casó en segundas nupcias, hecho que lo unió especialmente a sus hermanos José y Diego frente a la autoridad paterna. Continuó en la Universidad de Alcalá, donde aprendió lógica y retórica y, en 1615, al fallecer su padre, marchó a la Universidad de Salamanca, donde se graduó de bachiller in utroque, esto es, en derecho canónico y civil, sin llegar a ordenarse como había deseado su padre. En 1621 participó en el certamen poético habido con motivo de la beatificación de San Isidro y posteriormente en el de su canonización, en 1622, y ganó un premio tercero.

Problems in Kindle with poetic lineation

A quick way to have the Spanish play, no attributions of who edited or what edition was drawn upon--and the usual problem with font size and overhanging poetic lines in Kindle format. Even down to the second-to-last small size, at least one word of most lines hangs over (and goes to the left margin), not to mention the line numbers (and these are not long lines--just big spaces between the name of the speaker and where the poetic lines begin). For some speeches, it's hard to remember who is the speaker and you have to click back frequently. So the Kindle format gets 2 stars, but the play gets 5 = 4 stars.
