Economic Risks of Climate Change: An American Prospectus, by Trevor Houser, Solomon Hsiang, Robert Kopp, Kate Larsen, Michael Delgado, Ami

Climate change threatens the economy of the United States in myriad ways, including increased flooding and storm damage, altered crop yields, lost labor productivity, higher crime, reshaped public-health patterns, and strained energy systems, among many other effects. Combining the latest climate models, state-of-the-art econometric research on human responses to climate, and cutting-edge private-sector risk-assessment tools, Economic Risks of Climate Change: An American Prospectus crafts a game-changing profile of the economic risks of climate change in the United States.

This prospectus is based on a critically acclaimed independent assessment of the economic risks posed by climate change commissioned by the Risky Business Project. With new contributions from Karen Fisher-Vanden, Michael Greenstone, Geoffrey Heal, Michael Oppenheimer, and Nicholas Stern and Bob Ward, as well as a foreword from Risky Business cochairs Michael Bloomberg, Henry Paulson, and Thomas Steyer, the book speaks to scientists, researchers, scholars, activists, and policy makers. It depicts the distribution of escalating climate-change risk across the country and assesses its effects on aspects of the economy as varied as hurricane damages and violent crime. Beautifully illustrated and accessibly written, this book is an essential tool for helping businesses and governments prepare for the future.

Review

Points the way toward a new era in climate-risk analysis.... [T]he authors not only provide a basis for rational judgments by policy makers but also open a new avenue toward progressive improvement in our understanding of risk.

(From the opening commentary by Michael Oppenheimer, Princeton University)

Solid scholarship shows that we can improve the economy through wise use of our knowledge of climate change and energy. Better quantifying the uncertainties and near-certainties will help guide wise policies. Economic Risks of Climate Change: An American Prospectus is an important step forward.

(Richard Alley, Pennsylvania State University, author of Earth: The Operators' Manual)

This report has changed my understanding of what climate change means for the United States, providing incredibly detailed visibility into regional changes in climate and their economic consequences to specific sectors. Given its unique ability to touch home for so many, I suspect the study will ultimately be considered a landmark contribution in our understanding of this complex and vital subject.

(From the opening commentary by Michael Greenstone, University of Chicago)

This report is a careful, very timely and fundamentally important contribution.... Its legacy should be continued research to assess and, where possible, quantify those impacts that cannot now be avoided, and which must be adapted to, as well as to gain a better grasp of just how huge the risks of unmanaged climate change are likely to be, even for a superpower.

(From the opening commentary by Lord Nicholas Stern and Bob Ward, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment)

Thought Provoking
By Autamme_dot_com
This book is a massive work that modestly considers and examines the economic risk that the United States of America may face from climate change in the future, considering what may be done to mitigate the risks where possible. The economy of the country is threatened, it is claimed, by climate change through flooding, storm damage, agriculture failures and even a breakdown in social structures.
The veracity of the claims are beyond the pay grade and knowledge of this reviewer, yet it appears to be a considered work and not some tinfoil-hat radical manifesto that you may find on the fringes of the Internet. The authors certainly appear to have done their research and have a wealth of respected, powerful names from the world of science, politics, academia and activism to support their opinions and conclusions in this book that they believe will be an “essential tool” to help businesses and governments prepare for the future.
It won’t be for everybody, if only due to the price and the writing style, yet it would be good if a “lite” version could be prepared for the regular reader.
This weighty book is split into five parts, comprising of 22 chapters and is bolstered by five large technical appendixes, extensive references and a detailed index. The largest criticism is saved for the layout as this reviewer found the strange art of splitting a page into two columns to be significantly annoying, especially when reading it on a small screen. It is extremely uncommon that a book should force the reader to endure this torture for hundreds of pages of close type and it was a major turn-off. A lesser book would have been binned a lot sooner for this annoyance.
If you have a professional need or just a curious interest in the subject, this book is likely to deliver an interesting, thought-provoking and considerate in-depth message. Of course, that is the easy part: the implementation of a programme to reduce the projected effects is going to be the harder job. If even part of the book’s forecasts are correct, a lot of work needs to be done, promptly!

Intelligence in the Flesh: Why Your Mind Needs Your Body Much More Than It Thinks, by Guy Claxton

If you think that intelligence emanates from the mind and that reasoning necessitates the suppression of emotion, you’d better think again—or rather not “think” at all. In his provocative new book, Guy Claxton draws on the latest findings in neuroscience and psychology to reveal how our bodies—long dismissed as mere conveyances—actually constitute the core of our intelligent life. From the endocrinal means by which our organs communicate to the instantaneous decision-making prompted by external phenomena, our bodies are able to perform intelligent computations that we either overlook or wrongly attribute to our brains.

Embodied intelligence is one of the most exciting areas in contemporary philosophy and neuropsychology, and Claxton shows how the privilege given to cerebral thinking has taken a toll on modern society, resulting in too much screen time, the diminishment of skilled craftsmanship, and an overvaluing of white-collar over blue-collar labor. Discussing techniques that will help us reconnect with our bodies, Claxton shows how an appreciation of the body’s intelligence will enrich all our lives.

Body is mind
By Hande Z
‘[W]e do not have bodies; we are bodies’ so Claxton tells us. In this book he tries to get us to understand that we have not fully detached ourselves from the Cartesian mind-body dualism. Even those who firmly believe that the mind cannot exist without the brain (body) may not have grasped what Claxton is postulating here – that how we think and what we think depends on how we feel, and how we feel depends on how we feel our bodies.

Claxton devotes a large part of his book explaining the connection between mind and body, discussing in detail the constituents of the body and brain; and the fascinating account of why the body needs a brain (one chapter is titled ‘Why the body needs a brain’); how the brain functions – from how we anticipate events (and how prediction works) to the understanding of perception (‘perception is a hallucination’). He then explains how the brain and the body communicates with each other, and the effect and function of emotions and feelings and, importantly, how these influence our rational thoughts.

In order that we can understand at all we need to be conscious of what we are perceiving, which is one of the basic themes of this book. The problem that gets into the way is that it has not been fully possible to explain what consciousness is, and unless we do, how can we apply our understanding of our consciousness to our thoughts? Claxton discusses this in the chapter, ‘The Welling Up of Consciousness’.

In his last few chapters Claxton discusses the practical workings of the embodied life – that which mind and body work together to help us make better judgments. He examines this theme in politics, medicine, and law: ‘At High Table and in Debating Chambers of government and law, decisions depend a great deal on who can mount the most persuasive (or least refutable) argument, or twist the arms of colleagues most successfully, and not on who can bring us closest to the truth or to wise judgement’.

The full import of the kind of disjointed thinking (a mind not fully in tune with the body) that Claxton writes about is exemplified by the ‘inadequacy of cleverness …on display in the ritualised rhetorical warfare of the law court.’ He observes that ‘Decisions that make no sense from an embodied perspective – such as whether someone was in their “right mind”, or “knew what they were doing” – are treated with a farcical degree of seriousness.’

Fascinating and informative book
By aimesq
I heard of this book on an NPR interview with the author and ordered it the same day. It's definitely academic and dense, but the subject matter is absolutely fascinating and I learned so many amazing things about "bodily intelligence" that I didn't know! I would recommend this book highly, especially for people who enjoy learning in-depth about a new topic that may be totally different than what they do in their daily jobs and lives.

Raphael Semmes
By W. Rome
This is an extremely well written and fascinating memoir. Semmes was obviously a very intelligent man with a strong interest in the sciences, particularly meteorology and oceanography. Of course, as a ship's captain, he had need to understand these sciences. His descriptions are vivid and his experiences afloat in the service of the Confederacy are enthralling. He also cuts clearly through the myth of the history of the union concerning the war and clearly shows for what the Confederacy stood and the issues of conflict between the two sides. The book is highly recommended to both those interested in the War for Southern Independence and those who just want to read an excellent historical adventure.

Still can't figure out how to return knowledge to the Creator...
By Daryl Carpenter
Haynes' "Workshop Manual" series has always been a little inconsistent, and this one is no different. As the third book Christopher Riley has co-written for Haynes, it's better than the disappointing Apollo 11 manual, but not quite as good as the excellent Lunar Rover manual. This book follows the previously established Haynes format, and fits in nicely with the other Real Space manuals they've published the last few years.

As usual, this manual is fairly equally divided up into technical, scientific, and historical sections. The first quarter provides some interesting background material on NASA's earlier unmanned deep space probes, the evolution of the "Grand Tour" flight plan, and the Voyagers' somewhat tortured development history. The next chunk, about 70 pages, provides a technical overview of the spacecraft and it's systems, including each of the 11 science instruments, electrical power and communications, the Titan launch vehicles, and the computer and data storage systems. The next quarter is a technical and scientific look at both spacecraft's journey through the Solar System, focusing on some of the technical problems which had to be overcome, and some of the important discoveries from planetary fly-bys. The last section covers the Voyager Golden Records, including a description of how to play the record, and a description of each sound, photograph, music piece, and spoken message, found on the records. Finally, there's a brief epilogue describing how both spacecraft continue to operate to this day.

What's here is very nicely presented, but once again, I feel like Haynes has slightly dropped the ball on a potential masterpiece. The photographs and technical diagrams are generally of excellent quality, and add greatly to the book's text. Unfortunately, for a faux "workshop manual," some of the technical material is a little dumbed down in places, and the writing is filled with somewhat grating colloquialisms. I know spaceflight and orbital mechanics can be painfully esoteric subjects, but the approach taken here rubbed me the wrong way a couple times. The editing could have been a bit tighter in places; there are quite a few typos, and at one point, I found myself going back and forth trying to figure out if the propulsion module used a solid-fuel or hydrazine-fuel motor.

I know I'm making this sound like a mediocre book. Except for a few issues, there's a lot of good stuff here. Still, I think Haynes needs to work on getting their editing team up to snuff. Not perfect, but still pretty enjoyable if you're interested in unmanned spaceflight.

Voyager 1 and 2 to the outer solar system and beyond. How they did it and the obsticles they overcame.
By Dave
Great book of interesting facts about Voyager 1 and 2. Things I didn't know about the details of how the Voyagers were built and the problems they encountered along the way. An amazing feat of engineering to send these probes to the outer reaches of the solar system and beam back to Earth such beautiful pickets and amazing facts. Reading it took me back to the days when Voyager was launched and when NASA released photos of Voyagers encounters along the way. Made me proud to be an American. Wish it had more of the beautiful pictures of the outer planets that the Voyagers were famous for, still, there were a few of them. The book has a whole chapter about the Gold Record attached to each Voyager and what was on it and the details about how to replay the information contained therein.

so this is a great find for me
By DrJackie
I worked on the Voyager project, so this is a great find for me. Anyone interested in Voyager will get a kick out of this. It doesn't really stay on the theme of being a repair manual, but rather goes into project history. Just the cover alone is worth it!

Invitation to a Beheading, by Vladimir Nabokov

Like Kafka’s The Castle, Invitation to a Beheading embodies a vision of a bizarre and irrational world. In an unnamed dream country, the young man Cincinnatus C. is condemned to death by beheading for “gnostical turpitude,” an imaginary crime that defies definition. Cincinnatus spends his last days in an absurd jail, where he is visited by chimerical jailers, an executioner who masquerades as a fellow prisoner, and by his in-laws, who lug their furniture with them into his cell. When Cincinnatus is led out to be executed, he simply wills his executioners out of existence; they disappear, along with the whole world they inhabit. One of the twentieth century’s master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899. He studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, where he launched a brilliant literary career. In 1940 he moved to the United States, and achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic, and translator. He taught literature at Wellesley, Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. In 1961 he moved to Montreux, Switzerland, where he died in 1977. “Nabokov writes prose the only way it should be written, that is, ecstatically.” ― John Updike

Deliciously Surreal Existentialism
By Jon Linden
In this account of a man sentenced to death, Nabokov reveals a talent for the surreal. The accused man has not been told the date of his death sentence. He has been left completely in the dark. He has been locked up in a very bare and sparse prison, with guards, a prison director and assistant. Yet there are no other prisoners, none in the whole facility.

The mental musings of the prisoner are the focus of the book. The incidents are often highly surreal and not possible. They sometimes seem like one is reading a Magritte. Yet they are illustrative and fascinating. In one scene his family comes to visit him in prison, complete with furniture. In another he sees the prison director who is also the assistant director as miniature people. Wherever his musings take us, they are truly of great interest.

In the final scenes the surreal nature of the musing continues. The scene of the execution is somehow `disturbed.' Things are not as they should be. And as a result, he just disappears, along with everything else.

While the nature of the writing is extremely Kafkaesque, Nabokov had not read any Kafka when he wrote this story. In addition, neither Kafka, nor any of the major existentialists combine their philosophy with surrealism in the same way or to the same degree as does Nabokov in this book.

The book is recommended to all lovers of Nabokov and to those looking for a true contemporary classic fiction novel.

Gnostical turpitude!
By A Customer
"Invitation to a Beheading" is a strange book. First of all, it sports a brilliant preface by the author, and truth be told, this preface is superior to the contents of the novel itself. In response to just a few pages, you feel compelled to buy the author's "Lectures on Literature", which are only a poor substitute for the real experience of listening to Nabokov in person. The author explains the intricacies of translation, done by his son, Dmitri, under the father's supervision, with particular emphasis put on the title. If you are lucky to know Russian, you will be able to appreciate the importance of the problem at hand, and in addition you will see how well this book is translated into English. At different points in his life Nabokov wrote in three different languages, and "Invitation to a Beheading" dates from 1934, in a period where the author still wrote in his beautiful and melodic mother tongue. This is an early book by this author, and ever since its publication it was compared to Franz Kafka's "The Castle", which annoyed Nabokov a little, which he ironically expresses in the aforementioned preface.
"Spiritual affinities have no place in my concept of literary criticism, but if I did have to choose a kindred soul, it would certainly be that great artist [Kafka - the Moose] rather than G. H. Orwell or other popular purveyors of illustrated ideas and publicistic fiction. Incidentally, I could never understand why every book of mine invariably sends reviewers scurrying in search of more or less celebrated names for the purpose of passionate comparison. During the last three decades they have hurled at me (to list but a few of these harmless missiles) Gogol, Tolstoyevski, Joyce, Voltaire, Sade, Stendhal, Balzac, Byron, Bierbohm, Proust, Kleist, Makar Marinski, Mary McCarthy, Meredith (!), Cervantes, Charlie Chaplin, Baroness Murasaki, Pushkin, Ruskin, and even Sebastian Knight. One author, however, has never been mentioned in this connection - the only author whom I must gratefully recognize as an influence upon me at the time of writing this book; namely, the melancholy, extravagant, wise, witty, magical, and altogether delightful Pierre Delalande, whom I invented."
Any type of plot summary will not give this book justice, for you must know that this book is not about the plot. In the case of Invitation to a Beheading, writing a blurb is much like writing a blurb with a summary of an Emily Dickinson poem. Well, once upon a time ago, in the paralell universe of the fantasy realm of Nabokov's imagination, Cincinnatus C. is captured, and found guilty of gnostic turpitude, a crime escaping definition. Cincinnatus has visions. He writes about them. His family visits him in the fortress, where he is locked. And he does not understand a thing of all this mess he found himself in. Yet he does not lose his wit, and tries to manage his fate as best he can. And it turns out that he can manage pretty much, considering. The book is Russian to the bone. Nowhere else are born authors with such a specific sense of humor and absurd. Mother Russia gave us many writers with unique, inimitable style. Nabokov is one of them, although a at the same time having been a prodigal son who never returned to his native land. Like Trevanian, he carried the kernel of culture within himself, he was the culture. Like any other escapist fantasy, Invitation to a beheading can be interpreted in many ways, and that has been done for the last 60 years, and then some, but submissing myself to the author's will, I will leave the story without any further comment. Suffice it to say that this novel is a difficult book, but if you happen to be so inclined, you will jump up, ruffling your hair, to paraphrase the author. I hope you will!

It's a dang good book by-golly.
By A Customer
Whoever it was that wrote the encyclopedia entry at the top of this page either didn't read the book or didn't understand Nabakov. Invitation to a Beheading is one of the most gorgeous books I've ever read. To drop it under the label "anti-utopian" and try to resolve the ambiguities at the end in a poorly aimed summary doesn't even hint at the richness of the book. Thank goodness Nabakov dedicated his life to writing literature instead of lousey encyclopedia entries. Leaving the political and entering the artistic, the world Nabakov lived in after all, Invitation to a Beheading is one of the finest metaphores on the artistic condition I've ever read. Yes, Kafka is mild in comparision, and, as Nabakov always asserted, there's no connection anyway. --Dane Larsen

Unrestorable Habitat: Microsoft Is My Neighbor Now, by Lois Phillips Hudson

Lois Phillips Hudson was a novelist, essayist, professor at the University of Washington, environmental activist, and mother of two daughters. She was born in 1927 in Jamestown, North Dakota. Because of the Depression, her family was forced to move back and forth between North Dakota and Washington State. In 1937 her family finally settled on a twenty-acre homestead in the rural Sammamish River Valley near the town of Redmond, Washington, population, then, only about 300. Unrestorable Habitat: Microsoft Is My Neighbor Now recounts how that valley was transformed over the course of Hudson’s lifetime, roughly the sixty-five years from 1937 to 2003. The Sammamish River Valley was for her what Walden Pond was for Thoreau, what the Lake District was for Wordsworth, what the farm at Port Royal, Kentucky, is for Wendell Berry. It was both her home land and it was the womb of her imagination. Day after day, year after year, she rode her bicycles, first along the county gravel roads of her youth, then along the asphalt pathways of the Kings County Park and Trail System. As she rode, she observed the natural order and its cycles; she observed the human habitation of this world and how it changed the natural order; she saw rivers where salmon had once been plentiful now dammed for power generation and straightened for flood control. Parking lots covered wetlands. Golf courses and soccer parks replaced farm fields. Suburban housing developments overran apple and cherry orchards. Hudson’s rural habitat of small farms, salmon streams, forests, and the human community closely tied to the natural world were transformed into the suburban technological-capitol of the world, the headquarters of Microsoft, Hudson’s new “neighbor.” Unrestorable Habitat: Microsoft Is My Neighbor Now was not published during Hudson’s lifetime. Hudson left a manuscript that is substantially complete, but not fully finished. The book tells a unified story. It has a clear beginning, coherent development of ideas, and a satisfying conclusion. But it is obvious that Hudson had not done her final editing. There are many parenthetical comments within the text where she reminds herself to recheck sources, to verify facts, and to delete repetitions. We are able to observe Hudson’s thought process as she makes suggestions for further revision of her book. Also, there are a few typographical mistakes. However, the text is being published as Hudson last left it, without editorial corrections.

Unrestorable Habitat is a book I would very highly recommend for Book Clubs interested in contemporary society.
By Dick
I wasn't seeking Unrestorable Habitat. It found me a month or two ago, and it grabbed me, and held on. I have said often, already, that it would make an outstanding book for book clubs anywhere, especially book clubs where the members are open to discussing ideas about the future of our planet. It is a very rich book, full of nutrients for the active mind.
Mrs. Hudson's main antagonists (my descriptor) are Microsoft and the Salmon of the nearby river. But her book is liberally sprinkled with autobiographical vignettes of her own life.
Living in the midwest as I have my entire life, salmon are not near neighbors, just an occasional meal, but I could easily identify situations with which I am familiar which would fit her narrative. Indeed, analogous circumstances abound in every part of this country and indeed the world. Mrs. Hudson writes with little affection for Microsoft in particular, but as she herself admits, her writing tablet is her laptop computer often in one of those ubiquitous franchise coffee houses...Such is the paradox faced by most of us who yearn for the good parts of the "good old days", but utilize the benefits of a technological age such as my writing this review on a computer.
Mrs. Hudson died before she had completely finished the book and the editors wisely elected to make only the most minimal changes, retaining typographical errors, and notes by the author to check this or that source for accuracy. So the book, contents essentially complete, but fine-tuning unfinished, fits the narrative of my own personal life.
And Mrs. Hudson is an excellent writer. Her Bones of Plenty (1962) earned her plaudits in a New York Times Book Review, and a later honorary doctorate.
And the bulk of her career was as a University faculty, mostly at the University of Washington. She knows writing.
While reading and after completing the book I have been working at filling in abundant blanks about her life, which began as a child of a dirt-poor farm family in rural North Dakota, then rural Redmond WA in the Great Depression and then WWII.
She was always an activist, it appears. Quite clearly the premature death from chronic illness of one of her daughters in 2000, motivated her to make her observations for posterity. Most of her writing seems to have been between 9-11-01 and her death in 2010.
I enthusiastically endorse this book. And I specifically and highly recommend it for discussion groups.

Her writing is always powerful and challenging and often beautiful.
By John C Henry
Hudson richly interweaves environmental criticism, literary studies, moral and political philosophy, the history of capitalist expansionism, a passionate sense for justice, and her own life story. Her writing is always powerful and challenging and often beautiful.

Seeing Seeds: A Journey into the World of Seedheads, Pods, and Fruit (Seeing Series), by Teri Dunn Chace, Robert Llewellyn

“Llewellyn’s images reflect a depth of detail that until now, only the best botanical illustrators could approach.” —The Washington Post

A centuries-old saying goes, “Great oaks from little acorns grow.” But as this dazzling book reveals, there is much more to a seed than the plant it will someday become: seeds, seedheads, pods, and fruits have their own astounding beauty that rivals, and sometimes even surpasses, the beauty of flowers. Bitter melon seeds resemble a handful of rubies. Poppy pods could be art nouveau salt shakers. And butterfly vine seeds look exactly like those delicate insects captured in mid-flight.

Seeds also come with fascinating stories. Jewels of Opar got its name from a fabled city in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Tarzan stories. Lotus seeds sent into orbit by Chinese scientists came back to earth mysteriously altered. And fava beans—beloved of foodies—have a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality: they can cause the debilitating condition known as favism in some individuals and at the same time combat the microorganism that causes malaria.

In these stunning pages you’ll gain an understanding of how seeds are formed and dispersed, why they look the way they do, and how they fit into the environment. Seeing Seeds will take you to strange and wonderful places. When you return, it’s safe to say that you’ll never look at a seed the same way again.

Review
“Seeing Seeds offers a cornucopia of photographs by Robert Llewellyn. . . . The text, by Teri Dunn Chace, offers fascinating tidbits.” —The New York Times

“Both exquisitely beautiful as well as informative. . . . Reading this book will leave the reader with a greatly enhanced knowledge and appreciation of plants and their lives, as well as a sense of wonderment at so much natural beauty in unexpected places.” —Gardens Illustrated

“Amazing array of spectacular photographs, many shot at unusual angles that underline their ability to, sometimes, outshine the flower that produced them.” —Hortus

“This is an odyssey full of wonder that’s worthy of narration by Jacques Cousteau. . . . So often we look, but we don’t see. This book tries to change all that. Marvel at nature’s symmetry, patterns and hidden textures.” —The English Garden

“Magical encapsulations of the future, seeds also are tiny worlds of their own. The new book, Seeing Seeds, explores them in near microscopic detail.” —Sunset

“A marvelously artistic and detailed look at how plants perpetuate themselves. . . . The energy and ingenuity of seeds practically jumps off the pages of the book.” —Pacific NW Magazine

“You’ll never look at these important plant parts the same way again.” —Mother Nature Network

“What Llewellyn has done with his photographs is something akin to entering the temple of creation on a microscopic level.” —The Daily Progress

“Revel in the splendor of the plant world with Seeing Seeds.” —Rodale’s Organic Life

“A breathtaking photographic journey into the world of seedheads, pods and fruit.” —Alpine Garden Society Journal

“The macro images show well-known plants like poppies and cattails in a newly glamorous, occasionally otherworldly light. This is the equivalent of an Annie Leibovitz fashion shoot for plants.” —mental_floss

“While examining [Llewellyn’s] razor-sharp, tight close-ups of everything from sugar maple keys to a milkweed pod bursting open, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by the incredibly complex (and devious) methods that nature uses to ensure the survival of many species. We humans tend to think we’re smarter than anything else out there. But boy, we pale beside some wily plants.” —The Toronto Star

From the Back Cover

If you've ever wondered what the natural world would look like if you could be greatly reduced in size (like the Incredible Shrinking Man, perhaps), you can enter the door to such a worldview through the pages of this gorgeous book. The astounding photography puts you right up close to the smallest botanical specimens; and the literate, fascinating writing guides you deeper and deeper into understanding of what your eyes can see on the page. Far more than just a coffee-table ornament, this is a volume you will turn to often in order to reenter that magical door; and each time you do, you will gain new awe and respect for the wonders of creation.

Every Page a New Box of Gems
By s mcmillan
This book is a gorgeous catalog of natural purpose, of elegantly designed pods, patterns, packings, husks, shells, and stems. Every page is a new box of gems spread before the reader's eyes and set for maximum effect in sparkling prose that proves fully up to the task.

Among the pages lie such memorable treasures as the lushly charged Southern Magnolia, the dark and edible elegance of Love-in-a-Mist, the map of a lost world in the seeds of jewels of Opar, and a lens of Kiwifruit aglow in the mystery of it all.

This is a fascinating book.
By loretta willard
Seeds are fascinating structures. They house genetic data which carries the past into the future and perpetuates a vital life form. This book gives readers a chance to see inside and appreciate the complex processes that bring forth that life force and then re-encapsulates it for the next generation. There are so many forms of seeds. They become activated by many different climate effects and associations with animals who depend of them for food while providing dispersal. This is a fascinating book. Consider it as a gift of insight and source of enlightenment.
