“Llewellyn’s images reflect a depth of detail that until now, only the best botanical illustrators could approach.” —The Washington Post
A centuries-old saying goes, “Great oaks from little acorns grow.” But as this dazzling book reveals, there is much more to a seed than the plant it will someday become: seeds, seedheads, pods, and fruits have their own astounding beauty that rivals, and sometimes even surpasses, the beauty of flowers. Bitter melon seeds resemble a handful of rubies. Poppy pods could be art nouveau salt shakers. And butterfly vine seeds look exactly like those delicate insects captured in mid-flight.
Seeds also come with fascinating stories. Jewels of Opar got its name from a fabled city in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Tarzan stories. Lotus seeds sent into orbit by Chinese scientists came back to earth mysteriously altered. And fava beans—beloved of foodies—have a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality: they can cause the debilitating condition known as favism in some individuals and at the same time combat the microorganism that causes malaria.
In these stunning pages you’ll gain an understanding of how seeds are formed and dispersed, why they look the way they do, and how they fit into the environment. Seeing Seeds will take you to strange and wonderful places. When you return, it’s safe to say that you’ll never look at a seed the same way again.

“While examining [Llewellyn’s] razor-sharp, tight close-ups of everything from sugar maple keys to a milkweed pod bursting open, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by the incredibly complex (and devious) methods that nature uses to ensure the survival of many species. We humans tend to think we’re smarter than anything else out there. But boy, we pale beside some wily plants.” —The Toronto Star

If you've ever wondered what the natural world would look like if you could be greatly reduced in size (like the Incredible Shrinking Man, perhaps), you can enter the door to such a worldview through the pages of this gorgeous book. The astounding photography puts you right up close to the smallest botanical specimens; and the literate, fascinating writing guides you deeper and deeper into understanding of what your eyes can see on the page. Far more than just a coffee-table ornament, this is a volume you will turn to often in order to reenter that magical door; and each time you do, you will gain new awe and respect for the wonders of creation.

Every Page a New Box of Gems
By s mcmillan
This book is a gorgeous catalog of natural purpose, of elegantly designed pods, patterns, packings, husks, shells, and stems. Every page is a new box of gems spread before the reader's eyes and set for maximum effect in sparkling prose that proves fully up to the task.
Among the pages lie such memorable treasures as the lushly charged Southern Magnolia, the dark and edible elegance of Love-in-a-Mist, the map of a lost world in the seeds of jewels of Opar, and a lens of Kiwifruit aglow in the mystery of it all.

This is a fascinating book.
By loretta willard
Seeds are fascinating structures. They house genetic data which carries the past into the future and perpetuates a vital life form. This book gives readers a chance to see inside and appreciate the complex processes that bring forth that life force and then re-encapsulates it for the next generation. There are so many forms of seeds. They become activated by many different climate effects and associations with animals who depend of them for food while providing dispersal. This is a fascinating book. Consider it as a gift of insight and source of enlightenment.
