Summertime Blues, by B. R. Fleming

Summertime Blues by B. R. Fleming follows the coming-of-age story of Peter Bennings during the '60's as he weaves his way through high school and the sturm und drang of the teenage years. The novel simultaneously traces the “British invasion” and the emergence of the relatively new genre of music, Rock and Roll, and the impact of that music on Peter’s journey of discovery. Peter’s universal appeal, though, rests in his quest for answers to the ubiquitous questions about girls and sex and dating and parental restrictions that no one will help answer: “She told me everything I’d ever want to know about the lake, and I wished that someone would teach me how to talk with girls.” With disappointment and the shattering of his dreams, Peter escapes into music, booze, and sexual adventures. Being a faithful archetype of the coming-of-age story, the question, then, follows, What does Peter learn from this journey? The '60's are sometimes referred to as a "simpler time," but that simplicity rests only in technological terms. As J. D. Salinger infamously created a complex and tragic character in Holden Caulfield, so too does B. R. Fleming create in Peter a complex character searching for himself and for the answers to his life questions. Peter's journey will surely evoke memories for many teens today who can relate to Peter's conflict with the absurdities of dealing with adults. And for those who recall the shift in music during the '60's, Peter's adventures as a musician will revive the music associated with the era.

Review
"The music of our coming of age sticks with us for our entire lives. "Summertime Blues" is a coming of age story of young Peter Bennings. Reaching the age of thirteen, the world seems a lot more confusing to Peter, as the allure of sex pulls him over, and in the 1960s, the allure of drugs and rock and roll strike as well. "Summertime Blues" is a bittersweet look back on the sixties, and what it was like growing into a young man with the Vietnam War on the horizon." - Midwest Book Review

"Good reading and also very interesting to read what the male gender of the 60s may have been like. . . Loved the book. Yes, you can go back...to the 60s!"Dianne H.

". . . it's an honest and courageous book and deserves wide readership." - James Silberstein, Author, The Night Crystal McGoober Had Seven Heads

"B.R. Fleming takes us on a journey with Peter as he goes through the age of self discovery, quest for independence, following his dreams, drinking and having to stumble through the ever-challenging issue of liking girls and trying to understand them. . . . Fleming writes in a way that the reader feels like they are also experiencing every challenge that Peter goes through. . . . I give "Summertime Blues" four out of four stars." - Online Book Club

An Excellent Summer Read!!!!
By goli erami
It's easy to capitulate to the thousands of pop-culture novels out there, which will soon be available "at-a-movie-theater-near-you, but when you stumble across something not commercialized, that unique read, or film independent, there is an obligation to take five minutes and write a "lil-somethin'-somethin' on Amazon.

I highly recommend this novel, for it captures the viewpoint of ANY young person trying to survive in an absurd world. But seriously...it is entertaining!

B.R. Fleming's Summertime Blues
By K. C. Pruitt
I grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same schools during the same time period as the author. I know it is a fictional account, however, the river, Fort Roots, the old army base (Camp Robinson), the railroad tracks, 5 mile creek, the Scenic Drive in, and the skating rink are all places I frequented. My favorite author is John Steinbeck. His works work because they are about real places. This book is about real places that are now captured in real time. The characters are based on real people even if they are combinations of us all. Mr. Fleming paints a very accurate picture of growing up in the 1960's.Summertime Blues

Relax and and go with this journey...!
By Lauren
Deceptively innocent and easy to read, with all the angst, energy, longing and frustration of awakening puberty and the 60's with a backdrop of the music...always the music. I found this a delightfully easy and undemanding rolling read, and easy to pick back up and "rejoin" Pter as he sets his memoirs of his journey through puberty to the backdrop of the rhythms of a different time. The kindling of love and the confounding push of the libido toward a susccession of emotional cliffs. An age before the internet. Peter is one of the nice guys, seeming to be less interested in whether he finishes last...he just wants the chance to play his part in the show.
