About the Author

Franz Kafka was born to Jewish parents in Bohemia in 1883. Kafka s father was a luxury goods retailer who worked long hours and as a result never became close with his son. Kafka s relationship with his father greatly influenced his later writing and directly informed his Brief an den Vater (Letter to His Father). Kafka had a thorough education and was fluent in both German and Czech. As a young man, he was hired to work at an insurance company where he was quickly promoted despite his desire to devote his time to writing rather than insurance. Over the course of his life, Kafka wrote a great number of stories, letters, and essays, but burned the majority of his work before his death and requested that his friend Max Brod burn the rest. Brod, however, did not fulfill this request and published many of the works in the years following Kafka s death of tuberculosis in 1924. Thus, most of Kafka s works were published posthumously, and he did not live to see them recognized as some of the most important examples of literature of the twentieth century. Kafka s works are considered among the most significant pieces of existentialist writing, and he is remembered for his poignant depictions of internal conflicts with alienation and oppression. Some of Kafka s most famous works include The Metamorphosis, The Trial and The Castle.

Reading Kafka in its original language
By Gillis Heller
This is my third Kafka novel on Kindle, and the first in the original German. I really loved The Trial. Its depiction of insane bureaucracy defined the term "Kafkaesque". I'd love to hear an audiobook version of this story by Woody Allen. Metamorphosis was fun in its own right but didn't have any greater meaning. Das Schloß (The Castle in its English version) also has a lot of insane bureaucracy and is a longer treatment. It also covers a lot of anxiety about status, employer-employee relations, farmers vs city folk, good jobs and humiliating jobs, etc.

My only negative comment is that my German isn't quite good enough to capture the precise Woody Allen-esque worrying, so I wish that the built-in German dictionary were better. Even better would be an automated link to my Ultralingua German-English dictionary.

Still, this original German version is free whereas the English translation costs. I really appreciate Amazon making the original available.

Caution: grammar "errors"
By remy sucre
This version is restored from Kafka's script. Because the work was left unfinished, the older version contains the publisher (or, Kafka's friend's) editorial 'corrections', which makes the text far from the original, which takes use of High German (seems to be grammatically incorrect) and intended punctuation.

Terrible quality
By k
This book is of terrible quality - I have never seen so many typos, not even on an internet page, let alone in a book. Sometimes punctuation and grammar were so obscured by mistakes that one could hardly figure out the meaning of a sentence. I would have returned the book, but I had to leave the country, so I just kept it, and the more I read the more I regretted having bought it. $18 is actually on the expensive side for a book of fiction, so one could hardly expect to see it so poorly printed. The only thing I can say: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
