'Consumerism, computerization, and corporatization' dominate health care in the 21st century, for both practitioners and patients. These trends have changed the landscape of medicine, increased the speed at which new technology is incorporated into standard practice, and transformed the ethos of medicine today. Eiser examines these changes using observations from philosophers such as Lyotard, Bauman, Foucault, and others, with Foucault being the only one to examine medical care directly and doing so from a historical perspective. Eiser applies the work of philosophers, for example Lyotard's 'loss of grand narratives,' to medicine in the contemporary US. The book's 12 chapters address topics such as electronic medical records, evidence-based medicine, doctor-patient relationships, bioethics, and medical education. Though the title suggests a discussion of the current health care system in the US, Eiser also presents studies and references from abroad in a comparative context. Arnold R. Eiser is associate dean for Mercy Programs and professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. He also serves the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Physicians as the chair of its Health and Public Policy Committee.

The Ethos of Medicine in Postmodern America provides an insider’s view of the evolving medical industry from medical school through potential physician burnout. It is apparent that Dr. Eiser comes from the uniquely qualified viewpoint of the peer-reviewed author, medical practitioner, instructor, philosopher, ethicist and hospital administrator. This eye-opening book covers all of the different players and how they interact and affect each other: patients; physicians; medical schools; accrediting agencies for medical education; hospitals and other medical providers; the various models of medical care; insurance and pharmaceutical companies; quality measure development organizations; continuing medical education rule-makers; medical advertisers; and the legal system. Patients who read Dr. Eiser’s book will have a better understanding of why they are treated the way they are by the medical players and how they may take proactive steps to receive better care in the system. The author uses his experiences and studies to guide the medical field as to what no longer works given the societal changes and what may work better for both patient and practitioner.

Thought Provoking

A thoughtful analysis of how medicine is evolving--for better and for worse. Doctors and patients alike are caught in a maelstrom of competing currents--financial, technological, cultural, medical, ethical, and spiritual. Navigating one's way in this climate is disorienting and disheartening. "Ethos of Medicine" is an attempt to sort out these challenges, to help us find context and clarity. The chapters work well as stand-alone essays, and would be excellent additions to classrooms and seminars. Highly recommended.
