Five Stars Divided By Three - You Do the Math

I’m really sorry, because Terri Blackstock is a gifted Christian writer in other genres, notably her Newpointe 911 series. But when she swerves over to pure born-again love stories, in my view she misfires badly. If I gave five stars to this book, they would have to be spread out over the trilogy of stories, and I’m not sure Blackstock would even net two of them. (“The Recipe” is the most decent of the mix.) For some reason, these stories are painfully trite and overacted. Key characters have wild, lurching mood swings and go from giddy passion to hot venom (and back again) within the space of a few paragraphs. And “For Love of Money,” the Blackstock book, almost suffers from a problem many readers had in “Gone Girl” . . . there’s no one to root for! Both characters act foolishly, often making selfish and naïve, short-sighted choices. All’s well in the end, of course, but the way this story plays out is NOT admirable.
On the bright side, the Christian element is generally solid and inoffensive. But as romance stories, these are unfortunately as shallow as much of the secular competition.

Chance of Loving You packs a punch as an anthology by three bestselling romance authors: Terri Blackstock, Candace Calvert, and Susan May Warren.
For Love of Money by Terri Blackstock- I liked how this one starts with Julie and Blake meeting in a restaurant when Julie is waiting on Blake after he's had a terrible day. Instead of a tip he leaves her half of a lottery ticket and a promise to take her to New York if they win. Well, they do and that's when the story took a little dive for me. Julie and Blake both behave in a manner that I felt was uncharacteristic to the way they'd been portrayed at the start. I had a hard time getting past this but overall it was a cute story.
The Recipe by Candace Calvert-Amiee and Lucas are the center of this story and this one was a close second in being my favorite. I loved how the author weaves Lucas's grandparents and their love story into this one. Amiee is working as a dietary assistant and after an unfortunate incident with a decorative olive that resembles a bug she finds herself at the mercy of a nurse in order to avoid being written up. The nurse coerces Amiee into helping feed some of her patients in the evening and this is where she meets Lucas and his grandmother. It was his grandmother who was the recipient of Amiee's decorative olive and Lucas gives Amiee a bit of a hard time about it to begin with. Their playful banter and mounting attraction seemed quite real even in the short period of time the story takes place. As Amiee prepares for the last day of competition in the Vegan Valentine Bake Off she revisits her mom's recipe box and discovers the recipe for life.
Hook, Line, & Sinker by Susan May Warren-My favorite of the three and the one that I found to be most plausible is this story. In a novella it's hard to give the characters history and yet the author did a wonderful job of weaving Abby and Ross's past into the story to give them more depth and make what transpires between them more believable. I liked the fishing angle that this story was written from because it was something I could relate to. Abby's stubborn nature also drew me in because I could see myself doing some of the same things she did. The painful past that Abby and Ross share brings itself to the present and it's time to resolve it once and for all.

I had never read a Terri Blackstock romance before, just her mysteries. Apparently she's good at writing both! This was a fun and light-hearted story about two kind-hearted people.
Julie wasn't greedy and could care less about becoming a millionaire. Then she becomes one and doesn't like the kind of person it has turned her into.
Blake on the other hand can't wait to collect the millions, but won't do it without Julie.
Blake finds out that he's not so good at handling money and then thinks that he may have the right to Julie's. Obviously, this doesn't sit well with Julie so they part ways.
Do they get back together or has the love of money driven them apart for good?

This was my first time reading Candace Calvert's work, but I hope it's not my last. I was drawn into this book from the beginning. The characters were so "alive" and "real" that I felt this was actually happening.
She wrote her characters with strong and caring personalities. Sure, they have their flaws, but they don't let that hold them back. They learn from them.
This book was my favorite of the three.

Susan May Warren has always been a favorite of mine, but for some reason, I wasn't able to get into this book right away. It kinda' felt like I was starting off in the middle of the story.
However, I did enjoy it once it got going.
The characters in this book had a problem with forgiveness and grudges, but they did learn how to deal with them.
All in all, this was an enjoyable read. If you like light-hearted, romantic, Christian fiction books then you will enjoy this collection.
