Emily Dickinson continues to fascinate literature lovers. Her work is more successful now than in her own lifetime. Highly prolific, but famously reclusive, only two of her poems were published before her tragic death in 1886, at the age of just fifty-five.
Family, religion, and the age in which she lived shaped the beliefs that dictated Dickinson’s ideas, values, and behaviour. In this book Dr. John DelliCarpini provides an authorative look at these influences, and how they led ‘The Muse of Amherst’ to perceive God in her own unique way.

Emily's Secret Spiritual Life
By Toivo
"Emily Dickinson’s God" attempts to create a divine portrait as rendered by Dickinson in her poetry. The book maintains that Dickinson’s image of God was affected by various factors in her life, especially her parents, schools, religion, and her unique personality. Specifically, Dickinson’s image of God was shaped by her father Edward and mother, her schools of Amherst Academy and Mount Holyoke College, her Christian denomination of Congregationalism, and her own idiosyncrasies. Readers can attain a more profound insight into Dickinson by appreciating her quirky relationship with God through her poems.
At their foundation, Dickinson’s “religious” poems highlight her belief in God’s mercy rather than his justice, a tenet inimical to Calvinist theology. Dickinson saw God’s compassionate face especially in, through, and even beyond the beauty of nature. She also had a relationship with Christ and Mary, Christ’s mother, an unorthodox practice in the Calvinist church. In the end, Dickinson’s poems reveal that God was her support in her physical, but especially emotional pain, believing that he was more powerful than her weak self. Surprisingly profound, her relationship with God is unexpectedly similar to contemplative mystics who experience a topsy-turvy spiritual life. Dickinson understood and experienced the ecstasy of an overpowering intimacy with God and the misery of the dark night of the soul when she felt abandoned and lost.
The conclusion resolves Dickinson’s faces of God by stating the following:
“For whatever reason, Dickinson’s family, religion, education, and the age in which she lived shaped the beliefs that dictated her ideas, values, and behavior as we have seen. Each of these influences led Dickinson to perceive the world and God in her own unique way. We cannot help but imagine Dickinson awakening in middle of the night and anxiously turning over a series of ultimate questions. Yes, these are theological questions without theological answers. Dickinson was not a theologian, but she searched for the answers sought by theologians. She was, however, a poet, and as a poet, she felt deeply the deaths of her parents and fellow Amherst citizens, the pointlessness of getting and spending, and the moments of terror and incomprehension that most of us try to ignore.”
