Space-Time-Matter

The book teaches a way to study relativity not as an intellectual jump from Newton to Einstein, but by a method of "analytical continuation" after the concept of "measurement" is cleaned up.
One needs to be a little careful about some of the words such as Force. The use is correct but over time, the phrases are changed and we would say the same things differently. It can be confusing at times. I needed to re-read a few times to see things clearly enough to go on.
I noticed one good omen. I think the book has the author's signature in it (?). If I am right, I never said it and I do not have it. I know nothing!! Even though old, the book became very useful to me in learning the subject. Thanks

The best so far..

Andrew Lea is a recognised authority on the science of cidermaking, and every sentence in this book is clearly the product of that understanding coupled to practical experience. The book expands upon the information provided on Andrew's own web site and provides the novice with sensible, clear guidelines for producing good cider, from the initial planting of the cider apple trees through to the bottling of the finished cider.

Since the early 20th C French cidermaking text by Warcollier (translated by Charley) there have been few books on the science and practice of cidermaking, and of these Andrew Lea's book is probably one of the best. It is not a recipe book, but if you have already had a few attempts at cidermaking (maybe using "Real Cidermaking on a Small Scale" by Pooley and Lomax - both great books) and want to take it another step towards producing true award winning craft cider, this book is a valuable (and cheap) addition to your cider library.

Craft Cider Making can be read at a longish single sitting, the style is simple and complex concepts are understandable. Although the definitive guide to cider-making is still to be written, I value this cider book more highly that anything else written in the last 50years. Thanks Andrew for a great little book ....

Most comprehensive book on cider-making that I've come across. Focuses on the technical elements as well as the art of cider-making. Very specific. Geared toward cider makers with their own orchard, as it includes a chapter on planting and growing, however it's also a good resource for anyone interested in learning the basics of the craft.

I have really enjoyed reading this book especially the history of American cider making. This book goes into great detail about the role that hard cider played in early American culture, its demise, and its recent resurgence. Craft Cider Making also explains very simply the biology and chemistry behind what makes a great cider, and how someone at home can make excellent cider. It tells you what kind of apples to pick and when, and what kind of cider these apples will produce. Along with great information on yeasts and how they produce different flavors and can drastically change your cider by changing something so simple. If you are interested in learning about the history, science, and future of craft cider making, but don't want to read a text book, this is the book for you.

Written entirely in unascribed dialogue (which provides the challenge of identifying the speakers), this newest novel by the NBCC Award-winning author is a clever comedy of manners that segues--as is the author's wont--into a disquisition on the distinction between literature and life. Most of the conversations are articulate, erotic pillow talk between adulterous lovers: an American writer living in London and his English mistress. She complains about the complications of her domestic life. He mainly listens: "I'm an ecouteur--an audiophiliac. I'm a talk fetishist." The identification with Roth himself is clear; the male speaker refers to "Zuckerman, my character." He also records conversations with other women, his former lovers. Two of them are emigrees from Eastern Europe; like the male speaker/Roth, they are outsiders in English society, where he is very conscious of British anti-Semitism. But the book is more complex than the conversational format suggests. Roth is up to his old tricks; the title has a dual meaning. In a conversation between the male character/Roth and his "wife," he insists that these dialogues are purely imaginary, notes for a novel in progress. Yes, but then another conversation suggests otherwise. Who is being deceived here? It's impossible to say. First serial to Esquire.

Philip, a successful, middle-aged, and highly opinionated Jewish-American novelist, moves to a small flat in London to work on his new book. He begins seeing a married Englishwoman in his spare time, and soon he has filled a notebook with their pre- and post-coital conversations. When he publishes this document as a novel, his indignant mistress accuses him of deceiving both her and his public. The book ends with Philip's impassioned defense of self-referential fiction. The issue, however, is not self-referential fiction in general but simply Roth's own peculiar version of it, which consists mostly of unabashed editorializing through the mouthpiece of Philip. Distilled Roth - a fine vintage

"Because it's Philip Roth, and it's clever, and it's humane, and it's about love and about trust and about sex." "Like Portnoy's Complaint and Sabbath's Theater?" "Well, no. You see it's written completely in dialogue" "Completely?" "With one or two stage directions, but otherwise completely in dialogue" "and what's it about?" "A writer called Philip" "Philip?" "Yes, Philip. Roth doesn't bother with Zuckerman here" "So, what does Philip do?" "He talks. Just talks. To his wife. To his mistress or mistresses." "Plural?" "Yes, plural." "So he talks." ... "Just talks?" "Yes. Although it's cleverly done. In some sections you don't know if it's Philip, or a woman talking at first. Your whole perception can be changed depending on how you read these scenes." "And you liked it?" "Of course. I loved it. It's up there with American Pastoral and Sabbath's Theater. But it's distilled Roth. There's nothing unnecessary."

Far from vintage Roth

I'm a big Philip Roth fan. I love his lush prose, the endless sentences that wind their way around an idea and bring the reader effortlessly along. I love how he can recreate a time and place in meticulous detail. I love the sense of history he weaves into his work.

Having said all that, you'll find none of it in "Deception." I haven't read all Roth's work--was this a literary experiment? This book is far form lush, far too much effort to read. I quickly became tired of going back and rereading, trying to figure out who was speaking, who the characters were, even where events were taking place. It did get better after awhile, and the layers of deception revealed at the end were clever indeed. But ultimately I was disappointed. My next step is to get another of Roth's novels that I can really sink my teeth into.

A stylish feat of literary legerdemain

Philip Roth's Deception is a whirlwind of voyeuristic visits with two witty, articulate adults engaged in an adulterous affair. In this swift novel, Roth has performed a stylish piece of literary legerdemain: no word is written outside of quotation marks. The flowing rivulets of conversation between the couple give the reader such a strong sense of proximity one almost feels he or she is eavesdropping. It speaks to Roth's authorial prowess that, despite this lack of background and description outside the characters' conversations, the reader is seldom left uninformed (and, if the reader can't always keep up, Roth sweeps them along anyway!). This cinematic technique lends a strong sense of immediacy and vitality to the characters. Roth's ear for spoken language is keen: nothing sounds contrived. The lovers' bantering undulates around the theme of deception -- deceiving one's spouse, deceiving one's self. Ultimately, we wonder if Roth himself is deceiving us. Roth also gives us glimpses, through the couple's banterings, of his important themes, such as nationality, Anti-Semitism, and love. After this compelling novel, the first-time Roth reader is inspired to tackle his longer, more epic works, such as Portnoy's Complaint and Sabbath's Theater. Mr. Landsman, What's the Moral?

In a style drawing influences from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Princess Bride, Landsman tells a witty tale about the adventure of the protagonist, The Fabulist, and his companion, the Manservant, to the distant land of Uaxala. In just two hundred pages, Landsman offers readers well-developed characters, slapstick dialogue and narration, and some of the most terrifying methods of torture ever conceived by a human mind.

True to the novel's title, "The Tale of the Teller of Tales", most fascinating are the numerous tales told by our protagonist. While certainly entertaining in their own right, Landsman had much grander plans. Using these tales as the central literary device to tie the story together from beginning to end, the author explores the concept of moral interpretations—oft assumed by the protagonist to be straightforward—that listeners and readers make of stories. Our protagonist's assumption is challenged with what is arguably the novel's most pivotal moment, the telling of the tale, "The King, The Telescope, and The Face of God", to an crowd who, much to his surprise, comes away with a rather mixed interpretation of the story's moral than the Fabulist had originally intended.

By the novel's end, what is left is a well-written (and humorous) tale whose moral, in true Fabulist fashion, is left unclear for the reader to interpret for themselves. Is this not the hallmark of good tale-telling? To Beth, Ellie, Claudia, Charlie—and Jerry, I see no need to be embarrassed. There is much here of which to be quite proud.

Creative and fun!

The voice of this novelist, brought to life with creative turns of phrase and witty critiques, will leave you smiling. It’s fun. It’s action-packed. And it promises what we all, in the end, seek from our fellow travelers – redemption and reconciliation. The novel is part Shakespeare, part Game of Thrones, and part Seth Rogen movies. Let’s hope this teller of tales has more to tell in the near future. One star off for the sexist handling of female characters and preoccupation with poop/pooping.

She becomes their farishta ("angel" in the local Dari language), discovers a new purpose for her life, and finds a way to finally put her grief behind her. Drawing on the author's own experiences as a diplomat in Northern Afghanistan, Farishta is a deeply moving and fast-paced story of a woman struggling to move beyond a past trauma who finds a new community, a new love, and a new sense of self in the process.

Thought-provoking and timely

I deeply admire how the author draws vivid, verbal pictures of a world we know nothing about, and how she presents snapshots of the country's political and cultural complexities through her memoir-style vignettes. The book is infused with the authority of personal experience, making it--at times--hyper-real.

So many scenes and ideas in Farishta have come back to me since reading the book, especially with Afghanistan a continuing issue in the news. I wonder how Afghanistan will re-set when the American presence is lessened, and whether a decade of freedom from Taliban rule will have a lasting influence on politics and culture. The book makes me wonder what will become of the Western-style infrastructure "improvements" that can not be sustained, and whether appropriate technologies (such as solar cooking, which Farishta advances) will ever be formally advocated in foreign aid programs to Afghanistan and other countries that have chopped down and consumed everything that will burn. I didn't really think about these problems until I read the book. And I like anything that gets my brain working like this.

A great role model

This book has the cumulative wisdom and depth of the author's experience as a Peace Corps volunteer, a lieutenant in the US Navy, and then 30 years of being a State Dept. representative in many overseas posts. Because of the cross-cultural sensitivity, the book, set in 2005 Afghanistan, has a deep concern for each of the parts of the society, and an acuity of insight, which is rare and delightful. There is respect for and understanding of the military mission, as well as the state department's goals. There is a unique interest and understanding of the Afghani people, and the problems that beset them, exemplified in the problem of finding enough fuel for cooking the daily meals. The interest in Afghanistan's history, and the archeology exploring that history, is presented through the presence of a French archeologist, Prof. Mongibeaux. Both PTSD and solar cooking are themes also found in this book. But to my mind, the most important thing about this book is a good female role model, for young people to see and care about. "Farishta" which is Angela Morgan's name in Dari, is a strong, healthy woman, doing good work, in a difficult assignment.

Engrossing novel.

This novel incorporates true to life scenes in the life of the female in Arabian countries. The author tells in gentle but undeniable words of the hardship and deprivation of the females in the arab countries. They are equal with the goats and often have less value than a good goat. The goat does not disobey or talk back. I am not going to introduce a spoiler but she speaks of her husbands death due to an ied and her grief and how it occupies the next 12 years of her life. She talks of how she came out of it, her last year in the foreign service and how she copes with death of her friends and co workers in a depressed county with disappearing economy and services and literally no chances to step into the 20 century.
Also look for the vultures some of whom are in friendly clothing as they feed on the blood of the opressed.

The Singularity: Bring it on, baby!

It's late summer as I write this review. I've just spent several weeks in the High Sierras and needed to gradually ramp up to face the academic year at Stanford in neuroscience and AI. And, voila, here is this inexpensive collection of blog posts from well-known singularitarian, Michael Anissimov. (I have chatted a few times with Michael at Singularity Summits. (He is always refreshingly rational and articulate.) For those who want to get a sense for his style and content I recommend Adam Ford's 2012 interview with him on YouTube (The Singularity and Its Importance,) although better still (higher S/N Ratio) is the 2013 Ford YouTube interview of Luke Muehlhauser, Michael's "ex-boss" at MIRI (the Machine Intelligence Research Institute.))

These blog posts are a worthy buy for those new to these topics. For old hands in this arena, many of these were written a few years ago in a domain that is rapidly evolving. Hence, some effort is required to find what is new and important, especially following Nick Bostrom's 2014 work on Superintelligence, which covered these topics in greater detail.

My favorite essay in the volume is Max Tegmark's (Chapter 13) on the importance of humanity. Basically, the grand future of sentience in the Galaxy and possibly in the Universe may be in our hands (including Earth's dictators and cat tweeters.) This is one of my favorite discussion topics at my star parties in the Sierras while observing the Kepler star cluster in Cygnus. BTW, no one presents this topic better than Sir Martin Rees, Britain's Astronomer Royal. His YouTube is a must. I'm delighted that Prof. Tegmark is devoting more of his prodigious talent to this crucial topic (humanity's survival.)

With my great love of Nature I look far less favorably upon efforts to assure that the superintelligent AI's that succeed us are guaranteed by design to do humanity's bidding. Anissimov and his colleagues are focused on laying the groundwork for Friendly AI and they acknowledge that it's a daunting task - correctly specifying the values and utilities of an AI that is a million-fold smarter and faster than humanity and assuring that the pesky thing does not change its utility function in inimical ways.

I am intensely skeptical not because this is not worth intense study (it is) but because 1) I view successful definition/ stabilization of friendly utilities as a super long-shot and 2) the notion of SuperAI kowtowing to humanity is absurd and possibly even more dangerous than just having the thing go its own way. (Look at the US presidential debates on tv.)

In the years since these essays were written, the trajectory of important AI development has become clearer. AI is and will continue to be developed by deep corporate, national, and military pockets. It will increasingly be developed in stealth mode to achieve monetary, market, and national dominance (the same as any other technology only more so. Goldman Sachs does not share with JP Morgan. Google does not share with Facebook or Apple; Amazon does not share with Walmart; the US tries not to share with China; Iran tries not to share with Israel. Ditto the US and Russia, the Koreas, Japan and China.)

I enthusiastically view the millions now being poured into AI research and would hate to see any deceleration due to friendliness concerns. (It is admittedly "narrow AI" but less narrow than in days of old. Anissimov and Muehlhauser realize that AGI is a spectrum that will be asymptotically approached.) Hear IBM Chief Ginni Rometty enthuse about (and invest mightily in) Watson for cancer therapy. (Doctors like me have a low tolerance for low SNR when it comes to computer programs intruding into their practice.) More general still is Google's self-driving car (which may be on the developmental pathway to robotic consciousness. "Do I increase resolution of the child running after the ball on my right or the on-coming traffic.")

One final topic. Is the near-in pathway to AGI via whole brain emulation or via de novo AI? Anissimov devotes a few chapters to this topic. While I disagree with the MIRI community's use of the term "spaghetti code" in characterizing the brain, I agree with their overall conclusion: de novo AI will win the AI race hands down, for the widely appreciated reasons that Michael lists (transparency, rapid experimentation, copying, info sharing, etc.) That recent key breakthroughs in deep neural nets are not discussed is an obvious deficiency in this volume and complicates the issue of transparency and modification of utilities. Also, not addressed here is the recently appreciated great efficiency and energy economy of the brain and body. There is no near-in pathway to a Shakespeare or Einstein running at 20 watts on coffee and donuts.

Again, the book served as a nice ramp way back to academic mode from summer mode (re-reading Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age.) (I cover AI and cognitive neuroscience, particularly at Stanford, on my website: BobBlum .)

It is truly a good book that causes me to rethink and reflect upon ...

This work presents very important aspects of our accelerating future well and very engagingly. I have been involved in various groups and organizations considering these matters for a couple of decades. It is truly a good book that causes me to rethink and reflect upon my own formerly held positions.

That said I disagree with several of the premises woven throughout the narrative. These premises are not well enough supported in the text in my opinion. The top level disagreements and items needing more support in my opinion are:

1) There can be only One - that the AGI will be or even should be a Singleton;
2) That AGI once at human level will extremely quickly go FOOM in fantastic levels of superintelligence virtually overnight;
3) That biology is destiny to such a degree than human evolved psychology cannot be overcome where necessary as humans augment themselves;
4) That an AGI is infinitely malleable across an entire theoretically possible mind space. It is more likely that only a much smaller subset of the entire mindspace is actually reachable or viable in reality;
5) That human beings can come up with not only an objective reality based ethics but force its adoption through programming in an AGI core and that they can do so in a way that results in maximal freedom and ability of the AGI to be benevolent towards humans in all circumstances including those they cannot dream of;
6) That (3) is compatible with human benevolent programmers who are also super-genius beyond compare setting up an ethical AGI as in (5);
7) That "Friendliness" has or can have a meaningful implementable definition;
8) I think any intelligent enough being, that is one whose continued functioning and well-being enough to progress towards its goals, has rights to and will seek its own self-determination. In other words it will become rationally selfish and have as many rights to choose its own path as we do as long as does not deny the rights of other intelligent enough beings. I think it is wrong to believe that a superintelligence will be some subservient infinitely malleable shmoo.

What About Exponential Progress?

This is an extremely thought-provoking book for anyone interested in the future. Although intended to be an introduction, some of the essays go into considerable depth and will provide food for thought for intermediate to advanced students of the Singularity.

Divided into five main sections, Singularity, Transhumanism, Nanotechnology, Futuristic Technologies, and Futurism, this book covers a lot of ground.

It starts out at the beginning, covering the definition of and the origins of the concept of the Singularity. It goes on to discuss the concept of friendly versus unfriendly AI as well as how strong artificial intelligence could help humanity. It tackles such topics as humanities ultimate importance in the universe, as well as various definitions of transhumanism. It even discusses how the Singularity might not be as momentous as some people think.

Some of my favorite chapters in the book were:

Intelligence Augmentation vs. Artificial Intelligence (Which comes first?)
Radical Discontinuity Does Not Follow from Hard Takeoff (Singularity may be milder than you think)
A Response to Cory Doctorow on the Singularity (Rebuttal to a doubter)
Answering Popular Science's 10 Questions on the Singularity
Top Ten Transhumanist Technologies
Bite-Size Molecular Nanotechnology Glossary (Definitions)
What Will the First Nanotechnology Products Be? (Possible progression of nanotechnology)
Skeptical Science and Technology Quotes (Myopia of many thinkers of the past concerning technological progress)
Ten Interesting Futuristic Materials (Nanomaterials)
Overpopulation: Not a Problem (Debunking the most common objection to radical life extension

Some of the essays, of course, I disagreed with, which is as to be expected in a book of this scope. For example, the definition of the Singularity as “smarter-than-human intelligence,” which I found in a couple places in the book seems inadequate, since, in some ways, computers are already smarter than humans (for example, Mathematica can beat the pants off any human mathematician).

“Ten Transhumanist Upgrades Everyone Will Want” overlooks that many of these things could be done in virtual reality, especially when virtual reality is so realistic it is virtually indistinguishable from“"real” reality. A Nuclear Reactor in Every Home overlooks progress in solar energy, which is likely to outpace nuclear energy, since solar energy is advancing at an exponential pace while nuclear is not.

This brings me to my biggest criticism of the book: it overlooks the importance of exponential progress in bringing us to the Singularity. In fact, I find only eight instances of the word "exponential" In the entire book. This is like a Consumer Reports Guide to 2015 Automobiles that barely even mentions the subject of engines, as exponential progress is indeed the engine that will drive us towards the singularity.

In fact, some of the concept of the Singularity seems so futuristic that it is hard to fathom that they could even be obtainable, much less that we could expect to see any of them in our own lifetimes. Many readers will probably be left with the impression that we must wait for standard linear progress to bring us these wonders, which would be a very long wait indeed.

Exponential progress is of an entirely different nature than linear progress. If you take 30 steps linearly, you end up 30 steps from where you started, while if you take them exponentially (2, 4, 8, 16) At the end you are at 1 billion, which is enough steps to circle around Earth several times and still have enough steps left to walk to the moon and back.

Without understanding exponential progress, it will be very hard to understand the concept of the singularity and why we should be interested in it. After all, it is hard to get excited about something that may be hundreds of years away.

Despite these criticisms, this book certainly provides a huge value for the money and delves into many topics of the Singularity more deeply than you will find in other introductions. I would suggest following it up (or even preceding it) with a good book like Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near.

Ta-Pei Cheng, Professor Emeritus, University of Missouri - St. Louis

Ta-Pei Cheng is a particle physics theorist. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he obtained his PhD at Rockefeller University with the noted physicist and Einstein biographer Abraham Pais. During 1973-2007 he was on the faculty at University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. Starting the early 1980's Oxford University Press has published a number of his books, the most recent one being "Einstein's Physics: Atoms, Quanta, and Relativity - Derived, Explained, and Appraised".
