JIM ROGERS is the former Chairman, President and CEO of Duke Energy, the largest electric power company in the US. In 2009, Newsweek named him one of "The 50 Most Powerful People in the World." Rogers is an expert commentator and has appeared on 60 Minutes, Bloomberg News, CNBC, MSNBC, and The Colbert Report. He has spoken at the Aspen Institute, the UN, and the World Economic Forum, and has served on the boards of eight Fortune 500 companies. He lives in Charlotte, NC.

Having advised the Nigeria and South Africa in the privatization of state-owned infrastructure services providers, telecom and power, I have an appreciation for the concept of Distributed Renewable Generation and the idea of franchising rural power with local entrepreneurs is brilliant concept. When I privatized the incumbent telecom services provider in South Africa, the strategic investors, AT&T and Telkom Malaysia were provided a license in 1997 which required a roll-out of fixed line services in rural area. Eventually, it became to costly to roll out fixed lines but its sister company, Vodacom, mobile services operator, was more effective, so Government relaxed this provision in their license. More recently, I was Transaction Advisor in Nigeria for USAID Power Africa Transaction and Reform Program. The Government privatized Generation and Distribution separately and retained Transmission through management by Manitoba Hydro. The "Stranded Cost" of Discos and Gencos in poor rural areas are prohibitive and FGN had to inject $1.5 billion
into the system prior to elections in 2014, which included unpaid gas bills to IOCs. Nigeria has abundant natural gas for the Power Sector, but NNPC did not develop the sourcing and transportation of natural gas from the IOCs to consumers. Newly elected President Buhari has mandate to fix it.

It was ok but probably written for some one not familiar with the energy issues that we face today. It would be informative for someone unfamiliar with the subject but very light on detail for a student of the problem.

Great book. Gives a good overview of the new technologies that are changing the lives of the poor in Africa. Some day those technologies will be important for the US as well.
