What a Great Read!
By Voracious Reader
This book is a really intriguing read. First of all, it's set in the UK (London), and I'm a huge fan of British fiction. And the second is the book itself. Ria is an artist and a loner, but not because she necessarily wants to be. As a child, she got some facial burns, and she really doesn't want to be in public. She is about to lose her home, though, so it forces her into action. She contacts an agent, and suddenly she's the hottest artist in London. But someone is jealous of this, a man that is also a client of the same agent. With just a few mean words, he brings her down... and she's suddenly not able to sculpt anymore. But this prompts her to seek therapy, and to try to work out the internal scars from the severe trauma she's been through.
Rise is a page turner. I read this in one day, but not because it's short. I read it all the way through because quite simply I found it impossible to put down. I love how this book focuses on Ria's journey. It's an extremely interesting one.

Rise
By Jersey Girl Book Reviews / Jersey Girl Sizzling Book Reviews
Rise by author D.U. Okonkwo is an inspirational story that follows the journey of a facially scarred and reclusive sculptress as she is forced to come out of her comfort zone and the isolated world that she has been living, and learn to accept and embrace her true self and the world around her.
Ria Ofor suffered facial scars from a childhood accident that caused her to live a reclusive lifestyle away from the public eye. As a gifted sculptress, Ria just barely scrapes by selling her creations online, but her isolated life is turned upside down when she receives a home repossession notice, and she is forced out of her comfort zone and into the public eye. Ria embarks on an emotional journey where she will discover that she can accept her self-image, and conquer the fears that she has lived with for so long.
Rise is a wonderful story that easily draws the reader into Ria's story. You can't help but feel compassion and empathy for Ria as she struggles with her self-image, one that has left her traumatized and isolated from the world.
Author D.U. Okonkwo weaves a thoughtful story that engages the reader to ponder how they would feel if they were in Ria's shoes. As Ria embarks on her personal journey of self-discovery, you can't help but cheer her on as she learns to accept her true inner self, begins to heal and transform into a confident woman, and finally embraces the world around her.

Beautiful and moving.
By Kelly Smith Reviews
Shyness. Fear. Low self-esteem. Undeniable talent. Those things could all be used to describe heroine Ria in Rise. But she is not the sum of her parts. Ria is so much more, a bright spirit filled with a drive to create.
She was hurt badly as a child, and has never really overcome her insecurities. In the story, she is forced to reject her self-impose reclusion and go into society. It's that or lose her home.
No recluse likes being forced to go outside. As someone who has social anxiety and have known people with agoraphobia, I know this for a fact. So I sympathized with Ria for most of the story, being if fear of the public.
It's also a statement about the world itself: they will antagonize her. They will see her scars and they will use them as fuel for the firestorm of insults. Society is a cruel place, and not for the faint of heart. Ria is a very brave soul to finally have to face her fears and overcome them. She's a wonderful character, written with just the right amount of strength, humility, and even a little self-deprecating humor. One thing she doesn't have is pity. There is no pity for Ria; only a little sympathy or empathy. And a lot of admiration.
Ms. Okonkwo wrote a touching, realistic and beautiful story. A must-read!
