Greg Moss has been a business and information systems consultant for over 25 years. Starting in 1988, Greg began to work extensively on financial and accounting-related applications. He wrote his first custom billing system for a rehabilitation facility at the age of 20. He has worked extensively in the healthcare, point of sale, manufacturing, telecommunications, and service sectors. Greg is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt and was the chief information officer for Crownline Boats, Inc. In addition to studying music and computer science at Southern Illinois University, he completed a BS in business administration and information systems at Walden University. Greg also has an information assurance certification from Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to Odoo, he has experience in a variety of ERP systems and was a Sage Pro partner for several years. This is an excellent resource for anyone who uses Odoo

This is an excellent resource for anyone who uses Odoo, but it is especially useful for anyone wanting to customize Odoo for their business. I am particularly impressed with Odoo's new website builder, and with the help of this book, we were able to quickly build an e-commerce website that is fully integrated with other Odoo modules. This is a huge deal. We have needed a new website for quite a while, but companies willing to integrate with our accounting system wanted more than we could reasonably pay. The detailed instructions in this book allowed us to build our website in-house, and it works better than we could have hoped. I haven't yet ventured into creating my own custom modules, but I have been able to do some customization, and it has made life easier for me and my employees. Even something as seemingly simple as creating a custom search and saving it for later has been incredibly helpful. The book itself is well written and organized, and the real-life examples are really nice. I now find myself wanting to customize Odoo to do things I had never even considered.

The best book about the updated ODOO . it's a great help for working with ODOO

If you want a fast approach to Odoo this is the perfect book. It covers all aspects from installation to any changes or creating new modules and functionalities.The language and exposure are clear and direct, with a very practical approach. This book is a good starting point, because it saves a lot of time researching and seeking information about Odoo.

All major areas and features Odoo this covered, concepts and their use are explained. To me, a very interesting example is the area of ​​CRM and Manufacturing. A very powerful feature is the workflows, that are explained in a very clear and truly useful way. Special mention to the tips, which are very useful and help avoid wasting time with specific issues.

I recommend this book to both end users and technicians who want to meet and start with this product.The explanation for the creation and customization of modules, is particularly interesting and is done very effectively. The Website area ( Portal, Ecommerce) are especially interesting, because they are a very important point of this version of Odoo. The technical side up, is vary good covered also and the backup and configurations is superbly documented for a novice user, and even for an expert consultant required to expand these areas.

Definitely a great tool to learn Odoo. I would totally recommend.

This book is an easy and fast walk-through to install and use Odoo (install, set it, CRM, purchasing, manufacturing, accounting, HR... admin). It's a new version of the "working with OpenERP 7". It describe also the new features.
Then Greg Moss give useful information to customize your ERP with dashboard, workflow, custom modules ... and introduce new modules as "building web site / CMS" or "e-commerce".

Elizabeth Evans begins her debut novel, Carter Clay, with a prologue so chilling it's hard to imagine she'll be able to maintain the high-octane tension for another 400 pages. That she does is a testament both to her prose and to the power of her central characters: 12-year-old Jersey Alitz, her maternal grandmother, M.B., and the title character, a Vietnam veteran who is the catalyst for both tragedy and transformation.

The novel begins with a horrific accident in which Jersey is severely injured, her mother, Katherine, brain-damaged, and her father killed. The driver is Carter Clay, 42 years old and with "the face of a choirboy." This man has been sober for just a year, ever since his near-fatal stabbing while he was homeless in Sarasota, Florida. Having been given a second chance at life, he has religiously attended AA meetings, and has even come to believe that his craving for alcohol has diminished to manageable proportions: "Suffice it to say that Carter did not understand this appearance of diminution to be largely a feature of distance, as with a great warship that might be covered by the tip of your little finger when the vessel sits on the far horizon."

Then a minor accident sends him to a hospital, where a painkiller is prescribed to him that triggers those old cravings. Before long he is on a collision course, literally and spiritually, with the Alitz family. In the aftermath of the hit-and-run, M.B. reluctantly agrees to care for her injured daughter and granddaughter but soon finds she won't have to do it alone: Carter has decided he must make reparation by caring for his victims himself. But as his obsession with doing right by Katherine and Jersey grows, he may be doing more harm than good. On their way to Florida from Arizona, paleontologists Joe and Katherine Alitz and their precocious adolescentdaughter, Jersey, meet with tragedy in the form of a drunken Vietnam vet (the eponymous Carter Clay) careening down the highway. The accident leaves Joe dead, Katherine permanently brain-damaged, and Jersey a paraplegic. Determined to assuage his guilt, yet terrified of being found out for his crime, Clay insinuates himself into the survivors' broken lives. His desire to do good impels him to marry the catatonic Katherine and relieve Katherine's alcoholic mother of her unwelcome role as nurse. But a long-standing grudge borne against Clay by his former drinking buddy Finis Pruitt (also a victim of the accident) threatens Clay's precarious new "family." The novel often floats solely on the contrasts among its three central characters: Katherine, a former distinguished scholar who now can scarcely feed herself; Jersey, an insightful child embittered by her fate; and Carter, a desperate loner who uses religion and 12-step programs to glue together a life fragmented by experiences in Vietnam. As Carter nears his redemption, Finis looms nearby, itching for battle. The novel critiques American suburbia even as it swims in it; the characters speak a language of consumer cliches as if the wine they drink and the songs they sing formed an ever-appreciating commodity. Evans's provocative, exclamatory prose sallies forth with rhetorical devices?puns, arch questions, italic emphasis?that bring her contemporary Lorrie Moore to mind. When Carter Clay, driving his van drunk down a deserted Florida road, hits all three members of the Alitz family, the results are devastating: Joe Alitz is killed; his wife, Katherine, is left alive but brain damaged; and his teenage daughter, Jersey, is paralyzed from the waist down. With his troubled past, including a childhood of abuse, guilt over his experiences in the Vietnam War, and an on-again off-again commitment to both sobriety and God, Carter believes that the only way to atone for the accident is to take on responsibility for Katherine's and Jersey's lives, especially after it becomes clear that Katherine's widowed mother isn't interested in caring for her daughter and granddaughter. As Carter's sense of righteousness grows more rigid, his behavior threatens the well-being of both his charges, especially Jersey, whom he denies the continued medical help she needs. In her fluent and thoughtful second novel, Evans (The Blue Hour, LJ 8/94) has placed fully realized characters in difficult situations and allowed them to work out their own fates; the result is a book that offers no particularly happy endings and no easy answers to difficult questions of guilt and the possibility of forgiveness. Not an easy read - but well worth the efforts

If you are looking for a quick read strictly for enjoyment, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want to really think and get involved in the minds of some very confused people suffering the consequences of inadvertent actions, or of victims of circumstance, then this will be an interesting experience for you.

A Thrilling, Heartrending Book

Elizabeth Evans takes the reader into the heart of her confused, desperate characters. The novel challenges the reader to think about what it means to be human...what it means to be "good." And if that makes it seem like this is a heavy book, keep in mind that it is also a book full of suspense and humor. Calling the Coen brothers: this would make a great follow-up to Fargo! I loved this book!

Thought provoking, compelling, utterly complex and wonderful

This was the first book that I've read by Elizabeth Evans, and I must admit, it was a great story. Carter Clay, the burned out Vietnam vet is as complex and spellbinding a character as you'll come across in any book. It's a story of his fight for redemption after he hits the Alitz family, Joe, Katherine, and their daughter Jersey, with his van. But it's not just that. Evans tackles questions about God's "inhumanity to humans" and religion as a whole. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!

Cliff Hudder's Pretty Enough for You is a guy's book, meaning its emphasis is on men and their concerns: work and sex.  The narrator could be a Richard Russo character: an anti-hero aware of his faults but unaware of his innate goodness.  Part of his "assholery" is his treatment of women, but he doesn't treat men, especially himself, any better.  Read this for his bad-luck shenanigans, but most of all for his pitch-perfect, self-deprecating humor.  ~ Nan Cuba, author of Body and Bread.

Pretty Enough for You is Cliff Hudder’s rollicking carnival of a debut novel.
Harrison Bent is a self-absorbed, adolescent middle-aged ne’er-do-well immigration attorney in love with a twentysomething paralegal, married to a Filipino au pair who needed citizenship, with a girlfriend-stalker, whose philosophy is go-along-to-get-along. Playing hooky from responsibility, marinating in rum-Vicodin-Xanax cocktails and lying to his therapist, Bent is assigned a new case. “I knew I was not equipped to deal with the Leudecke case. I also knew I wouldn’t turn it down or hand it off to somebody better suited … what background did I have in eminent domain? Or with Mexican drug dealers? Or dead Mexican drug dealers?” Bent’s also deficient in pyromaniacs, witches, and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, but he gets a crash course.

Hudder exhibits superlative comedic talent. “I had stretched my nineteenth year pretty far. I had stretched it right up to my forty-fifth year, some would say, but now I was forty-eight.” Bent prefers to drink “Cuba Tiránicas (like Cuba Libres but more oppressive).” Dialogue:

[Bent] “What do you know about him?”

“Never heard of him….But I can get you what you want from him, without him knowing.”

“That’s really confusing.”

“If you want to know more, I’ll need something from you. Obviously.”

“Obviously….You want me to buy you another drink?”

“Yes.”

I bought him another drink. “Is there something else?”

“Oh, yes. There’s something else.”

I thought about the possibilities. “Money?”

“Of course, money.”

What were expense accounts for? “How much would you like?”

“Exactly. How much?”

“Look, help me out a little here….How much to take me to him?”

“First the word.”

“I’m sorry?”

“The word for what you want. Tell me the word, and I’ll take you to Eladio.”

“Who you don’t know.”

“Never heard of him.”

Women exist in relation to Bent’s immediate needs. His exasperating running commentary (flab, hip flab, overwide hips, thick ankles, wrinkles, thinning hair, beefy, pretty enough) made me want to put him in a Speedo and see how he measures up. But I did not dislike him — he manages to be just self-aware enough to avoid complete cretinhood.

He is capable of introspection with a Bent twist. “[L]like on a tour of the Coliseum in Rome, when some American a******s in the group won’t shut up — they insult the ruins, talk loud on their cell phones as the guide attempts to explain how many Christians were slaughtered — and they make you feel you have to apologize to the guide and all of Rome and to a lot of dead Christians, too, and not just for the a******s or their behavior or even for yourself, but for your whole country: maybe your way of life.”

Hudder’s Pretty Enough for You reminds me of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice and Vineland. Hudder avoids the temptation to rehabilitate Bent while still delivering character development. The ending is unexpectedly affecting and satisfying without being wrapped in a happily-ever-after bow. I hope Mr. Hudder is working on another.

absolutely nothing like I expected

This book is nothing, absolutely nothing like I expected. At first, I thought the cover was a bad choice, but after finishing Pretty Enough For You, I know it was the perfect quirky design.

If you can forge through the first few chapters as I did with plenty of skimming, the book grabs you. As a woman, I learned too much about the male mind, which was hilarious and captivating. Do guys seriously think like this? I found myself rolling my eyes, laughing at Bent’s stupidity, and thinking what an idiot. Loved it! Let’s be honest, what female doesn’t think these things of men?

Hudder did an excellent job portraying the stereotypical male protagonist who created his own problems in his perfect life because of his addiction to alcohol and sex. I wanted to shake Bent and tell him to grow up. Then, when I least expected some literary accomplishment after all of this male regurgitation, Hudder created twists and pulled elements together in a beautiful display of writing that actually has a moral applicable to real life. Bent kind of grows up. He learns real life lessons and even feels pain and maybe true love. You have to read this. Promise you will not put it down if you get bored in the first half. The climax and resolution are worth trudging through the muck.

My only draw back is the use of too many words to express what Bent is feeling, thinking, or seeing. Cutting out some of the literary clutter would have made this my favorite book all year. I tend to skim when unnecessary information is put into the paragraph. Just tell me what I need to know and give a few descriptions with the narrator’s feelings and I am good. That would’ve kept the pace going instead of boring me a little. Very little. I highly encourage you to read this book if you don’t mind cursing and entering into the mind of a dirty old man. He constantly thinks of alcohol and sex while trying to maneuver through his self inflicted problems.

Only because of the initial skimming due to the inclusion of too many descriptive elements, I have to give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. Hudder has talent. His writing is smooth and easy to follow. I loved the twists and the way he pulled elements from the beginning and tied them together at the end. It's not often that a novel surprises me in the plot building or resolution, but Hudder did! TWICE! I can’t tell you how. You will just have to read Pretty Enough For You all by yourself.

Such a wonderful debut novel by Cliff Hudder. Hudder will have you sitting on the edge of your seat through most of “Pretty Enough for You”. “Pretty Enough for You” is a fast paced novel, that will have you asking questions throughout the story, but don’t worry you will get the answers you were wanting. Along with asking questions you will be laughing through the humor that is scattered throughout the story. There are times however that I wished that Hudder would use less description of what is going on and get along with the story.
I think it is funny how Hudder gives his female readers a look into the male mind (not all males), from the playboy perspective. I was happy though that by the end of “Pretty Enough for You” the main character Harrison Bent had grown up in the sense of maturity.
I will be giving “Pretty Enough for You” 5/5 stars, for having a fast paced story line, and for telling a fun and exciting story throughout the whole novel (well after the first couple chapters).

Nice categorized collection of inspiration

I own several books by Make and this is volume fits in nicely. Not meant to be read cover-to-cover, but in a pick-and-choose style. The book starts out with workshop and tool basics for folks new to the game. The projects are then divided up by type so you can quickly find those that match your interests. Categories are:
* Electronics
* Microcontrollers and Microcomputers
* 3D Printing and CNC Fabrication
* Robots and Drones
* Music and Audio
* Photography and Video
* Fun and Games
* Crafts and Wearables

There is something for everyone in this book. I often find that the instructions are more of a guide than a true step-by-step. There are places where you can customize, change, and modify as much as you want and many places where you just have to experiment to get it right. That's part of the fun of making! Projects range from simple afternoon entertainment to builds taking a weekend or more, but resulting in your own drone. This is a great book for adults or kids. Even if you don't think you'll build any of the projects, it is a great resource to flip through for inspiration when you are running low on ideas. If you have an iPad or other color reading device, I'd save the dough and grab the kindle version unless you MUST have paper in the shop. I find my laptop or tablet is always around though, so paper is only preferable if you really want it and feel like spending the extra $13. The paper is high quality and print is gorgeous though. If you have many issues of make magazine, you'll recognize some of the articles, but it's nice to have them in a categorized collection. Good job Make! Now go get building.

Excellent book for anyone who loves to create

This is the latest addition to our cache of MAKE books, and it doesn't disappoint. My hubby loves to build things, and MAKE has been a great source of ideas for him. The projects in this books run from an easy afternoon organizing your workspace to several days (or weeks) and building your own UAV (drone). The book doesn't throw new Makers (as they are called) into the deep end, but starts out with the ins and outs and whys and hows, such as the choosing the right tools for the job, how to maintain them, how to store them, and more. Each project is presented in detail and laid out in a step-by-step fashion. It describes what you will be making, the tools you will need, the materials you will need, and what your finished project will do. Each step almost always has a picture or drawing to go along with it so you are easily able to follow along. Along the way MAKE gives little lessons about the science behind the item you are creating, which is a nifty little bonus.

For me, I think the best part about the book and the projects it provides is that MAKE doesn't require you to be a robotics engineer or computer programmer in order to build some pretty cool things like a Virtual Reality Baja Buggy. Not all of projects are inexpensive side, though. If you don't already have many of the tools, there can be quite an investment involved before you are able to even consider starting a project, let alone beginning to purchases the materials necessary for that project.

Even if you aren't into programming, electronics, or robotics, there are other options for you in this book. MAKE has included projects on making soap, using PVC pipes for vases or building little tables, and even adding LEDs to your kid's favorite pair of sneakers. This and the other MAKE books offer so many wonderful and amazing projects and creative ideas for pretty much everyone and every skill level. I've given these books as gifts many times and the recipients have loved them and gone on to create many very cool things (one was their very own RC rolling robot, another uses them for inspirations for classroom experiments as she's a middle school science teacher). For parents looking for ideas for family night, to pull the kids away from video games, or to get a child interested in science, these MAKE books are perfect.

I really cannot recommend these books enough. I you aren't interested in using them to make anything, they still provide an engrossing afternoon of reading because a person can learn quite a bit of science from these books.

Nicely bound volume chock full of interesting projects

This is a nicely bound, durable paperback chock full of interesting projects, ranging from Arduino and Raspberry Pi tech projects to PVC furniture and "bang sticks." The photographs and instructions (and cautions, in some cases!) are clearly set forth. This volume collects a lot of popular projects from wearable electronics designed by people at Adafruit to home-made stereo amplifiers. It helps if you have some basic soldering/making skills, but the projects are explained well enough that you don't need to be a mechanical or electrical engineer to assemble them. Loads of fun and some useful ideas. Highly recommended for adventurous hobbyists.

Will keep you howling with laughter as you ponder the meaning of life

Keith Wilson’s new book is a romp, a romp through despair, existential loneliness, the grief that comes as the protagonist discovers that white male privilege doesn’t mean you get what you want. Wilson’s closely observed commentary on the absurdities of life gives it humor and pathos, and makes what is ultimately a very sad story into a page-turner that had me laughing out loud.

A fun, thought-provoking read

I normally read quickly, more interested in the destination than the journey. This book made me slow down and enjoy the ride. I savored the turns of phrase, similes and metaphors so much that I highlighted many of them, something I almost never do. While the plot centers on a depressed psychotherapist who suffers many losses, it is about so much more. The story plays out with a sense of humor that had me laughing out loud too many times to count. I'll resist the temptation to share some of the scenes that tickled me...suffice to say you'll be very well prepared if you ever get asked to take a breathalyzer test.

About the Author
Boris Draznin, MD, PhD, is an internationally known leader in the field of diabetes research and clinical practice. At present, he is the Director of the Adult Diabetes Program and the Celeste and Jack Grynberg Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver. On average, his Program oversees the clinical care of three new patients every day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for a total of over 1,000 new diabetes patients each year. He has served as Chair of the Professional Section Advisory Panel of the American Diabetes Association and President of the Western Association of Physicians. Dr. Draznin has authored or co-authored 150 articles in the peer-reviewed literature and has accepted invitations to edit or submit chapters to over 20 books. He has written for professional audiences as well as the general public.

The scope of the text is admirable, and efforts to summarise waste valorization and address dispense hygiene were particularly valuable. If I'm being picky though, the initial chapter on yeast is not written at a level of detail commensurate with the rest of the book. I came away thinking that the main reason to purchase this book is to read the review of waste valorization, but that on its own does not fully justify the hefty $200 price tag.

Great but different sequel...

So this was interesting for me. Different from No Return. Or perhaps I’m a different reader. I’m not sure. I didn’t read the first one again, like I had wanted to. Instead, I jumped right into the second book. I kinda regret that decision, but it is what it is.

I’m not sure how to talk about this book without giving stuff away, but I’m going to try. Hopefully I can convey my thoughts in some form of intelligent sounding sentences. As far as a summary of this book’s plot, I’d have to refer to Jernigan’s blurb, which will make more sense than what I’m about to write. The story basically follows three of our main protagonist from No Return as they get caught up in a plot to save Jeroun. Although, that is really really simplified. So, let me get on with my thoughts.

As you can see from some of the quotes I listed above, there were some deep thoughts in this book. I’d consider this more reflective than a quest driven standard fantasy/sci-fi mix. Matter of fact, I don’t feel as if the characters changed a lot between the end of No Return and the end of Shower of Stones. Sure there was a little, but not nearly as much as in No Return. Shower of Stones seemed more of an examination of the what it means to live, to die, to love, to fear. That was the focus. Not a god constructing a world-destroying needle in space. At least, that was how I felt. Good? Bad? Yes. It would depend on what kind of mood you’re in and what kind of book you’re looking for. Personally, I enjoy the deep thoughts of Jernigan. I think that’s why I like his Bottom of the Sea shorty story compilation more than I did No Return. Those short stories have stuck with me ever since I read them.

Now, normally I’d throw myself a little tantrum and mope around about not having that intense character obsession that I love. I didn’t, though. Instead, I used my pitiful imagination to connect with Jernigan’s writing. When something happened, it wasn’t stated as a fact, it was explored in detail. For instance, there is a scene of a character waking after surviving a horrible experience. The sensations and his physical state were described over about two pages, and then his recollection of events for perhaps another two. The characters in this book are always thinking, and we are along for that ride. It makes for a long read, and if you really, really boil down the plot, not much happens.

The length of the book is made up of musings and imagery. As some of you know, the imagery part should have prompted a level of boredom from me. I would be lying if I said on mornings when I was tired and my brain was not yet awake that I still dived into this with reckless abandon. Those mornings I found myself dreading the book because it would remind me how much I truly struggle to create images in my mind based on descriptive descriptions (if that makes any sense). It made me take a nap, because my brain hurt. I can describe a picture, but it’s ten times harder for me to come up with my own picture based on the words of another. It’s one of the challenges I face as a reader. It’s why lengthy, detailed descriptions usually bother me.

The reason I overcame this usual annoyance was simply Jernigan’s writing. I find his sentences fascinating, masterful at times. I read him for his descriptions. I read him for how all his characters view situations, life itself. All his works I’ve read have had a level of depth that I’ve enjoyed. The descriptions are not just descriptions, but perceptions and sensations from the characters point of view, conveyed sometimes poetically. It’s hard to find that in books. That type of book isn’t something I would read over and over. I mean, if I did, I’d be devouring a meager book a month and I'm sure at one point my brain would stutter to a halt. There’s a place for fast paced books, books that just move. Then there’s a place for more reflective books. Jernigan, so far, has written the latter, in my humble opinion.

I will say that I didn’t struggle as much with this one as I did with No Return. I think it was because I had a good foothold in the world. It was familiar. There were hardly any new places—places that stretched my imagination. So for those looking for the fun, crazy places delivered in the first book, be prepared to be disappointed. Not to say this one wasn’t inventive, it just didn’t have that out-of-the-box shock factor of the first one. I’d lean it more towards a philosophical tone than the journey tone of No Return. But boy howdy, when there was action it was incredible and fun and descriptive and gory and wonderful!

So overall, if you liked No Return, you should read this. If you didn’t, well, read it anyway. It’s different in a lot of ways. Matter of fact, this would be a book that both my mother and sister would enjoy. The sex is (sadly) less, the cursing as well. Shame for me; good for mom.

P.S. A few side things I must mention because I do whenever I notice it. First, there were editing errors that stuck out. Second, the price of this book is painful, especially for an ebook. I know the author doesn’t have control, but ouch. As of now, Amazon (of course) is the cheapest option.

Not as edgy or innovative as the first, but it's deeper and more well-rounded,

Like its predecessor, No Return, the second novel of Jeroun follows two converging story lines - the first featuring the triumvirate of Vedas, Churls, and Berun, and the second featuring the scientist/magician Pol. It's a narrative format that echoes the first novel quite nicely, creating a natural flow or connection between the two, but that's really where the similarities end.

As hard as it may be to believe, Shower of Stones is a darker, more complex, more philosophical novel. Zachary Jernigan really takes us beneath the surface of that first narrative to confront what it means to be human, to be in love, and to hold onto hope for a better tomorrow. That's not to say that this is a shiny, happy, hopeful fantasy - far from it! - but we're climbing towards the possibility of a future, rather than towards an end.

The opening chapter or arc of a novel really serves to set the tone for what comes after, and Jernigan sucked me in immediately. He takes us deep into the history of the world of Jeroun, to a time before Adrash was the only god in the sky, and fully fleshes out a mythology that was only hinted at in the first book. We meet the gods (demigods?) whom Adrash created to keep him company and to provide a sense of a family, and witness firsthand as his depression and his madness drive them to wage war upon a world and attempt to drive him from the skies. It's a fractured, damaged, incestuous family dynamic that evokes memories of Greek mythology, but which is something entirely new and exciting.

In the second arc, he takes us deeper into the heroes of the first book, revealing the heart and soul of Vedas, Churls, and even Berun. Whereas No Return was largely a story of mistrust and animosity, Shower of Stones is one of trust and friendship. The seeds of character development planted in the first book are allowed to take root and blossom here, driven in large part by a mysterious new character who announces himself by arriving on the back of a dragon. I won't say much about him, as his secrets are a cornerstone of the book, but I do have to say a few words about Fyra. As much as I liked the mystery and the cryptic nature of her presence in the first book, I was excited to see her become a character here, extending the heroic triumvirate into a quartet. This arc is certainly the longest of the novel, eating up far more pages than (on the surface) seems wise, but somehow Jernigan makes it work. It's a long period of talking and philosophizing, without a lot of action, but the internal conflicts really work to expose the significance of the first arc, and to bring the two of them together.

The final arc involves, of course, the final confrontation with Adrash. Again, there's not much I can say here without spoiling things, but I was pleasantly surprised by how it all played out. I thought I knew where Jernigan was taking the story, but he weaves in some twists and turns that keep you guessing right to the end. Anybody getting a bit antsy over the lack of action in the second arc is well rewarded here, as everything comes together, with gods and heroes carving out a new mythology. What's refreshing, however, is that he doesn't allow the mythology to overwhelm the human element, and doesn't allow the war between gods to push the heroes to the background. It's a delicate balance when dealing with such very different forces, but I loved the way everything intertwined and came together.

Shower of Stones is a very different book from No Return, both in terms of content and pacing, but somehow it all works. It's not as edgy or innovative as the first, but it's deeper, more well-rounded, and more . . . well, significant is the only word that comes to mind.

A Fantastical Tale with Meat on its Bones

Until Shower of Stones, I had only read Zachary's short stories, which I found to be quite impressive. I have not read No Return: A Novel of Jeroun. I wanted to read Shower of Stones to see if the novel could stand alone--it does; although I would recommend reading the glossary in order to familiarize yourself with some unfamiliar terms and concepts if you have not encountered No Return.

Shower of Stones is one of the few books that successfully utilizes a prologue and an epilogue, two unique pieces that tie the story together to form the foundation of its themes. The story is ambitious, especially in light of the word count. Jernigan could have easily turned this into a 400 page tome, but the very poetry of the story lies in his ability to render a complex tale with so few words.

The blurb gives the reader the idea that the story is about Vedas, Churls, and Berun, but that is a sleight of hand. They are all here, present and accounted for, but I never felt like the story was about them. They appear to be vehicles for Shavrim's story.

And who is Shavrim? If you remember No Return, the god Adrash mercilessly rules the world of Jeroun with a heavy and malicious hand. In Shower of Stones, he creates a family, a "minor pantheon" of gods, which he sees as a gift to the world of Jeroun. The first "child" is Shavrim:

A lavender-skinned, devil-horned boy named Shavrim Thrall Coranid.
He was not born, but tipped from a jar. Nonetheless, he grew as if he were a child.

So begins Adrash's plan to inspire mankind. After Shavrim has grown to adulthood, Adrash creates five other "children," each with different aspects of character. With these six children, the god hopes to usher in a new age, but instead, his children turn on him. Led by Shavrim, they try to kill him. Instead, he murders his children--all but Shavrim.

But that, too, is an illusion.

Jernigan deftly hides the second coming of this strange family behind the adventures of Vedas, Churls, and Berun. These minor gods, the souls of Adrash's children, manage to possess Vedas, Churls, and even the constructed man, Berun.

It is in these scenes where the characters--especially Vedas--realize they are not alone in their own minds that Jernigan's prose shines. I found the maturity of the characters and their decision-making abilities to be quite refreshing. In a fantasy sea of young adult protagonists, it's absolutely marvelous to find characters whose angst is no less agonizing but managed with insight and acumen.

Jernigan explores the concept of free will through his characters' realizations that gods ride their minds and bodies. However, each god uses Churls, Vedas, and Berun, not as vehicles of revenge, but in order to free humankind from the unjust god, Adrash.

Although he is a god, Shavrim's human desires for family and love give us a character with whom the reader can empathize. By contrast, Vedas and Churls seem almost cold. Vedas is analytical to the point of emotional detachment from all but Churls, who is distanced from everyone by the trauma of her own past.

In spite of Churl's anger, I enjoyed the relationship between her and her dead daughter, Frya. Theirs was one of the most realistic mother/daughter relationships I've seen portrayed in fantasy in a long time.

The points-of-view of Berun and Sradir arrive late in the novel, but they were truly my favorite characters. Especially the god Sradir, who asks:

Has the world always been this way? Does each world possess a god it must overcome to achieve adulthood? There are no answers to these questions. We fight, you and I, against what we can see.

These are the philosophical questions that Jernigan poses to the reader through his characters' interactions with gods and other humans throughout the novel. And yet, Jernigan doesn't become bogged down by juxtaposing literary themes within a fantastic tale of another world. The story moves at a satisfying pace with enough magic and fight scenes to satisfy any fantasy reader.

Yet for those of us who appreciate a fantastical tale with more meat on the bones, Shower of Stones delivers that in spades. Here is novel that simultaneously causes us to examine the context with which we view family, the gods, and the world around us, and it asks us to keep asking questions.

Even when there are no easy answers.

Highly recommended.
