Through it all—the frivolity, the jadedness, the pain, the hope—Clowns and Buffoons shines a light on who we are as people, how we function in society, and how we treat each other…and ourselves.
Look beneath the bizarre, and you will find a stunning display of the power of imagination, the devastation of losing a friend, the destructive force of egotism, the heroic protection of innocence—and perhaps a bit about yourself.

Author’s obsession with clowns provides for oddly intriguing reading
By Julee Rudolf
I’ve yet to meet an adult who likes clowns, but apparently, at least one exists in the form of an author named G.M. Potter, who has produced a collection of ten stories on the subject. Although I was hesitant to choose this title (given to me for free in exchange for a review) for that very reason, I realize now after finishing it that I shouldn’t have been. Mr. Potter’s stories are varied, descriptive, well written and entertaining in spite of their sometimes creepy common subject: clowns. There’s a clown investigator, a custodian clown, a group of out-of-work clowns…even a killer clown. And there are strange endings, expected endings, surprise endings and I’m not sure what just happened endings. Same goes for the settings, which you might expect to be heavy on circuses, but aren’t.
As for the writing, I thought that the section in Replacement Vince where the narrator describes his coworker Vince’s transformation after being promoted was spot on (though what happens later with Vince seems sort of strange). The first paragraph of Mitigation, about a man trying to coax his wife into consensual sex (a few parts of which I found rather…ew) was one of my favorite descriptive passages, “He imagined the surge coming at him in great waves, as one after the other in an endless procession. Each one pounded against the shoreline and was repelled. The jagged cliff face remained immoveable. The semisubmerged rock resurfaced in the roiling water and reasserted itself as a firm and eternal monolith.” I also liked the beginning of another story, End of the Gravel Road, through for a different reason-it seemed insightful, “My mother died when I was younger than two years old. Don’t weep over this. I didn’t know her, and neither did you. You can cry a bit over the loss, but it won’t be tears you’ll shed for me. Any crying will only be done to make you feel better. So, weep if you wish.” All that nice stuff aside, the book was not without its flaws, the biggest for me were a few parts with wording that felt a little repetitive and could have maybe used a bit more thesaurus-ing. Additionally, I was confused about what exactly was going on at the conclusion of Popcorn and Balloons. And in Gang of Six, I’m not sure I could appreciate the logic behind the effort that the gang goes through in order to help their fellow clown, a guy named Barber with a puppet phobia, face his fears. In summary, Clowns and Buffoons, a collection of ten varied stories with a common theme, is worth the read for anyone willing to try something oddly unique. As good or better: It by Stephen King, Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman and Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

this book is a great read for anyone who doesn't have much time for ...
By Zachary Gumm
I wasn't sure what to expect going in to this book, but it hit me not long into it. Full of short stories, this book is a great read for anyone who doesn't have much time for reading. The stories are just the right length for a quick reading session, and give your mind something a little different to think about. All of the stories involve clowns in someway, but not in the funny, goofy or "clowning" way that one would normally think of. It dives in to the deeper recesses of the human mind, and explores what it is that makes us human. The feeling and emotions that most people go out of their way to avoid are showcased beautifully in theses stories. From self identity to desire and longing, from fear and anxiety to loneliness, Clowns and Buffoons will give anyone an empathetic trip into the darker recesses of the human mind.

Entertaining!
By montanamama
When I bought "Clowns and Buffoons" I had not been a reader of short stories. It was the perfect book to dive into some short story reading! I love people watching, and related these stories to people watching.....I enjoyed the entertainment of the characters and didn't need to know more than was shared (and in some cases didn't want to know more about some of the characters). The character development was fantastic for a glimpse at some, well, clowns and buffoons. I enjoy that the stories are tied together with a common thread, that you can read one full story in a short time span, or that you can read several and enjoy several different tales. Not every story follows the same format, so I enjoyed that as well. It's an easy read, provokes emotion, and entertains - just what I was looking for.
