Review
'Terence Patrick Murphy's book makes a fundamental contribution to narratology. By combining linguistics, philology, philosophy and folk studies, and thanks to a huge knowledge of the critical literature, Murphy thoroughly investigates the structure and the limits of Propp's major work. This book is recommended to everybody interested in the study of narrative and theory of literature.' Luciano Vitacolonna, University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy
'In this book, Professor Murphy challenges one of Vladimir Propp's central tenets that 31 action types constitute the vocabulary from which, in a canonical sequence, genuine tale plots can be composed. By comparing such sequences to genotypes, he offers a rich set of counterexamples which call for an unbiased reconsideration.' Sándor Darányi,
University of Borås, Sweden

A bridge between stylistics and fairytale studies
By Amazon Customer
In disciplinary terms, this book bridges stylistics and fairytale studies. To date, there have been relatively few stylistic studies of fairytales. This is in part because fairytales have often not been considered to be a major literary genre or at least not a serious literary genre. An obvious reason is that the fairytale is a genre aimed mostly at children.
For a long period, the field of fairytale studies was occupied by the Russian Formalists. In 1926, Aleksandr Nikiforov asserted that the principal role was occupied by the Hero, while the secondary roles could be taken by the Helpers, the Gift Donor, and the Villain. In Morphology of the Folktale (1928), Vladimir Propp suggested that the fairytale contained eight characters and that each character fulfilled a particular function. He asserted that each fairytale consisted of 31 plot functions, which could be broken down into six shorter sequences: Preparation, Complication, Transference, Struggle, Return and Recognition.
The Fairytale and Plot Structure challenges a number of Propp’s central claims. The first of Propp’s claims that requires serious modification is the claim that a fairytale contains 31 functions. Instead, argues Murphy, there are a variety of options. A fairytale may contain 11 functions, 18 or 19 functions, 23 functions or 29 functions (164). A second claim is that the number of characters may vary, from fairytale to fairytale. As the book suggests, “the most significant point is that survival plots contain one fewer character slot than do marriage plots” (169). A second factor involved is that the length of the fairytale determined to some extent the number of characters. For example, the shorter the fairytale, the fewer the number of characters. There are four characters in the 18-function plot structure of Little Red Riding Hood, for example, and there are three characters in the 11-function plot structure of The Story of the Three Bears (169).
The Fairytale and Plot Structure overturns a number of Vladimir Propp’s critical assertions in Morphology of the Folktale, and it provides a more detailed analysis of fairytale genotypes. In this respect, this study marks a minor milestone in stylistic and narratological research into the fairytale.

It’s the kind of a book that enlightens you more, every time you read it!
By JONG-RAE CHO
This book would appear to be suitable reading for both expert and novice. The subtitles and boxes are arranged to be easy on the eyes; and even for a layperson such as myself, the whole flow of the book is structured to be an easy read.
By exploring the plot genotypes of ten fairy tales, this book establishes the foundation of a theory of plot genotypes. The author shows how Vladimir Propp offers richer version of Aristotle’s analysis, and then clarifies Propp’s mistakes and ambiguities. (While presenting these, the author’s point about the importance of the ‘bridging functions’ sounds really intriguing!)
Personally, the most interesting part of the book was the comparison of the plot function between Charles Perrault’s Cinderella and Brother Grimm’s Ashputtel. What is more, as a reader with an Asian background, it was exciting to see how certain plot genotypes constantly reminded me of certain Asian folktales. The author analyzes the structure of European fairy tales, but it may be the case that the plot genotype could also be applied to other folktales around the world as well.
It’s the kind of a book that enlightens you more, every time you read it!
