About the Author

Teri Dunn Chace is a writer and editor with more than thirty titles in publication, including Seeing Flowers (Timber Press, 2014),  How to Eradicate Invasive Plants (Timber Press, 2013) and The Anxious Gardener’s Book of Answers (Timber Press, 2012). She has also written and edited extensively for Horticulture, North American Gardener, Backyard Living, and Birds & Blooms. Raised in California and educated at Bard College in New York, Chace has gardened in a variety of climate zones and soil types, from inner city Portland, Oregon, to coastal Massachusetts. She now lives in a small upstate New York village with snowy winters and glorious summers.

Robert Llewellyn has been photographing plants and landscapes for almost forty years. His photographs have been featured in major art exhibits, and more than thirty books featuring his photography are in print. His 2007 book, Empires of the Forest: Jamestown and the Beginning of America, won five national awards in nonfiction and photography, and The Capital was an official diplomatic gift of the White House and State Department.

If you've ever wondered what the natural world would look like if you could be greatly reduced in size (like the Incredible Shrinking Man, perhaps), you can enter the door to such a worldview through the pages of this gorgeous book. The astounding photography puts you right up close to the smallest botanical specimens; and the literate, fascinating writing guides you deeper and deeper into understanding of what your eyes can see on the page. Far more than just a coffee-table ornament, this is a volume you will turn to often in order to reenter that magical door; and each time you do, you will gain new awe and respect for the wonders of creation.

Every Page a New Box of Gems

This book is a gorgeous catalog of natural purpose, of elegantly designed pods, patterns, packings, husks, shells, and stems. Every page is a new box of gems spread before the reader's eyes and set for maximum effect in sparkling prose that proves fully up to the task.

Among the pages lie such memorable treasures as the lushly charged Southern Magnolia, the dark and edible elegance of Love-in-a-Mist, the map of a lost world in the seeds of jewels of Opar, and a lens of Kiwifruit aglow in the mystery of it all.

This is a fascinating book.

Seeds are fascinating structures. They house genetic data which carries the past into the future and perpetuates a vital life form. This book gives readers a chance to see inside and appreciate the complex processes that bring forth that life force and then re-encapsulates it for the next generation. There are so many forms of seeds. They become activated by many different climate effects and associations with animals who depend of them for food while providing dispersal. This is a fascinating book. Consider it as a gift of insight and source of enlightenment.

Entertaining, encouraging, practical

Finally, someone has written a book on the subject of adult language learning that is entertaining and engaging! Becoming Fluent offers encouragement and practical suggestions on how to improve your ability to learn a language for those looking to take on the task later in life. I wish I had this information years ago.

Where's the beef?

In the past twenty years, I've studied a number of different languages (nine) in an effort to narrow the list down to one that I hope to invest my time and energy into mastering. I've also spent that time teaching ESL, with a MA in TESL alongside. So I do not come to this book as a novice. But while I'm not quite sure what I was expecting from this book, what I got was a fluffy pop-sci approach that did not in any way illuminate the subject in a coherent way. I did not find anything inside its covers that would be of any use as a teacher or a learner; it is more of an apologist / cheerleader / self-help approach than it is either practical or theoretical. I guess I saw the publishing house and assumed it would be meaty.

I was wrong.

The very last section serves as a very good encapsulation of the book. The authors explain the historical arising of mnemonics, exhaust the reader with a number of different ways to remember a shopping list, then admit that the technique probably isn't so helpful for learning a foreign language.

I will happily save you the $14:
It's very, very difficult to learn a foreign language.
Older people can learn things.
You will forget things, but forgotten things can be remembered more easily.
Study often and in different ways.

I'd give it one star, but for someone who has never studied a foreign language, taken a psychology 101 course, or found a way to remember something, it might be of some slight use.

While as a German teacher I primarily teach high school age students, my experiences with small group adult classes and corporate tutoring made me interested in this book. I found this book to be very informative and much needed, as I tire of comments from people I meet who say "I learned Spanish/French/German in high school, and I can't speak any of it!" My hope is that more adults revisit and restart their language learning for career advancement or even the pure enjoyment of it. There's a glut of books out there about child learners, and this new book helps balance it all.

Concise,incisive explanation of how the brain generates creativity

In this refreshingly irreverent,witty,and down-to-earth book, Dietrich lucidly decodes the arcana of brain function and adroitly explains how creativity arises from it. He emphatically states at the outset that he disdains and abjures "pop psych" accounts of creativity that are long on speculation and short on explanation and evidence. He warns readers that he declines to offer what he cleverly calls "proof by verbosity", but rather addresses straightforwardly,concisely,and with minimal academic jargon the question of what the best research and theory reveal about how brains generate creative ideas. He thoroughly disabuses us of the mythconceptions, monolithic logic, neurobunk, and "new phrenology" fallacies that continue to plague and obfuscate creativity research and misinform the public.He not only explains why such ideas as "right brain/left brain thinking", alpha enhancement, and divergent thinking are wrongheaded and conceptually vacuous and bankrupt, but also goes on to employ well-established principles from cognitive psychology,and cultural evolution to explicate the brain mechanisms that lead to creative cogitation.He insightfully explains the distinctive features of brain-based evolutionary algorithms and how they operate differently from those of other biological systems, how the proactive brain paradigm accounts for putative teleological and foresightful processes integral to human creativity, and how the deliberate/spontaneous typology of creativity illuminates and systematizes what has hitherto been an inchoate cumulus of facts and findings. He devotes a separate chapter to flow, a "third mode of creativity" he characterizes as taxonomically distinct from the deliberate/spontaneous category.Finally, he covers artificial intelligence and robotic creativity, making a forceful case that the presumption that abiotic entities such as computers and robots are ipso facto incapable of creativity is both hubristic and uninformed. Brilliant, insightful and logical explanation of the mind.

Exceptionally well written and clear description of the neuroscience of creativity. It is hard to imagine another field of science with so much persistent mythology that must be cleared before sensible thought can begin. Arne Dietrich does this concisely in a human, funny and easy to follow manner that few scientists can master. If you are interested in the science of creativity, reading this book will save months of sorting through complete rubbish and get you up to speed.

A great informative book....

Genetics is the greatest innovation of modern science.Through this we can easily determine the heredity which indicates the characteristic of any species.This book is all about that.The author has covered the history of genes,RNA,DNA & its replication etc.He has described the whole things in step by step & it helps me for better understanding.I think this book can be a great help for biology students.Thanks to the author for writing such a informative book !

Good book but don't use for a genetics course in college

The reason I gave this book a 2 star has nothing to do with the book itself. It was a very easy read but it didn't help me in my genetics course. Not much on the web to help with a genetics course this was my only option.

Gerald W. Scanlon was born in Saginaw, Michigan and moved to Mexico when he was 21 years old. He had a fulfilling career as a teacher and is now enjoying his golden years of retirement. He has always had a love for math and still dreams of coming up with a perfect betting system for playing blackjack. It was actually while trying to develop a betting system that he was led to the elements in the periodic table. He saw a relationship with the way elements fill their orbitals and the patterns of wins and losses that occur while gambling. This led him to the amazing world of quantum mechanics and to develop his own theory of everything which he shares in his latest book.

Waste of time

I can't believe I wasted the ten minutes it took to read this book. Absolutely no scientific basis for it. The author, to make the facts fit his weird theory, suggests 2 new elements, both with 0 protons or neutrons. The only explanation given for this is to make his theory of waves of creation fit the math he was trying to use. I am a scientist and a Christian who believes in creation so am not at all offended by the title or the thought behind his theory, but it is absolutely not based on any facts. I thought this book would be about Higgs particles, well, it wasn't. I'd give 0 stars if I could.
